  • By the first century BCE, Rome had gained control of the entire Mediterranean, but those conquests had been accompanied by a century of civil war that witnessed the assassination of politicians on all sides of the political spectrum. At one point, the adherents of one populist politician marched on Rome's temple of Castor and Pollux, which was closely associated with the Senate, and tore up the temple steps. This period of nearly continuous warfare would not end until 31 BCE, when Julius Caesar’s nephew Octavian vanquished the combined forces of Mark Antony and the Egyptian queen Cleopatra at the battle of Actium in northwestern Greece. This talk reviews the events leading up to the conflict, the circumstances of the battle itself, and the relationship between Egypt and Rome thereafter.

Dr. Rose is AMAZING! His lectures are, honestly, phenomenal! I thank all of the gods for Dr. Rose, the Penn Museum channel and all of the many other channels, created by the many great institutions, from all over the world, for all of the wonderful lectures to which they, very, very kindly, allow all of us to have access.
Thank you, as usual, Dr. Rose, for another great lecture!
You are, by the way, one of my heroes! ☺️

    In the beginning:
"I will give you a very fast and crude layout of the civil war and what led to the battle of actium..."
37 minuts later: "So, this leads us to the battle of actium..."

Dr. Rose, thank you for yet another superb and eye-opening lecture. I have a request: Could you append a recommended reading list in the video notes (or even as a reply to this comment)? Your lectures have been such a wonderful source of continuing education for me during the pandemic, and I would love your expert advice on further reading. Many thanks for all you do!

Cleopatra in my head looks like Uderzo drew her in the Asterix albums. .. which was based on Elizabeth Taylor in the film.
(Monica Bellucci played the role convincingly in the Asterix movie.)

I recall reading that one of Lord Nelson’s Captains fashioned a wood coffin out of the bow of a wrecked French ship and presented it to Nelson as a “sick joke”. I suspect there’s a connection between that and the Roman practice concerning rostrums.
I am continually amazed to observe and learn the breadth and depth of Roman culture in the establishment of Western civilization.

Happy anniversary of battle of Actium - a guess not, so happy for Cleopatra and Marcus Antonius but it shaped western civilization for centuries to come. You wonder; how would our world look like now if Octavian August lost..

How can you seriously put Aeneas on a timeline of historical events? He's a fictional character! He's more important as a figure of Augustan imperial Rome idk make it make sense
