Gaijin Entertainment, makers of the game War Thunder, flew me out to Texas to try out some authentic WWII tanks. They then CHALLENGED me to compare the in-game tanks with the real things. So, how does their virtual MMO tank warfare game stack up on the battlefield of Game Theory? Time to FIND OUT!

Tank destroyers can still move their guns around, and they're made to kinda sit back a shoot from afar.

I dont think its such a bad idea. A couple of my friends were trained in the army as combat engineers meant to support tanks. They would drive around the back line of tanks in armored personnel carriers and when tanks break down, get bogged, get their engine shot. They would come in with a smoke pot to cover the area as they either fix or tow the tanks away. Think abt it if "medic" tanks were introduced as well.

Marcus Parris You probably consider it better because you don't like being ammo racked lmao, nearly all of you WoT players use the point of "oh well you can get one shotted in war thunder therefore it is too hard and a bad game smh"
Marcus Parris WoT is not more realistic, maybe in handling and physics wise [even though there's simulator and realistic modes in WT that fix the arcade feel] and along with models, but when it comes to penetration, shrapnelling etc. and just overall tank combat in general it isn't realistic at all.
@@Cozzy-Wozzy he was writing a joke

+Hoshimaru57 Shermans didn't face british and russian tanks though like in a realistic battle

"Sherman had heavy armor..."
**russian heavies laughing in the background**
For its time, yes.
Ikr sherman armour is not even a fraction to soviet armour
Muhammad syafiq t34 and m4 have the same constructional armor thickness of 45mm. Kv1 has about 100mm at the front. Unheard of at the start of the war until the tiger 1.
Shermans had around 50mm of armor in front armor, t34 had 45mm, and KV-1 has 75mm
well, yes, but German heavy armor was notoriously unreliable and very difficult to repair in the field. they had to take their tanks to a shop just to get the engine overhauled. just like the British Leyland L60 engine in the Chieftain. Russia just built a lot of tanks that were "good enough." Germany got out produced by the allies. Sure, they had some of the best tank designs of the war by about 1942, but they just didn't have the time or resources to build enough of them. they simply got overwhelmed by the amount of shermans, T-34s and KV series tanks.
At 5:22, you say it requires high octane fuel which increases the chance of a fire. High octane fuel is actually harder to ignite, correct? The higher the octane rating of a fuel the higher the amount of heat needed to cause detonation.
Sora21098 i thought the same thing! what an awful mistake right there!
High Octane fuel just means that it doesn't pre detonate when the fuel flows into the combustion chamber, the hotter the motor gets the more likely a pre-detonation of gasoline is likely to occur. As you can imagine an airplane engine gets incredibly hot because it is air cooled and has to move tons and tons of tank.
***** Historically tigers were more flammable due to fuel pump issues causing leeks. Plus in the winter they used to have to use a torch to get the engine hot enough to start.
Sora21098 not true
yes true

Edit: "The American strategy is quantity over quality" have you ever heard about the T 34?
The American strategy was quality and quantity, I believe Losef Stalin himself said: " There is a certain quality to quantity "
The Americans made sure the M4 was perfect because they couldn’t ship it back to the factories for repair as easily as the Germans could with say a Ferdinand.
@@lynx3947 not that the ferdinand could make it back to the factory without the engine exploding, lul
@@HiGaming-wi8gn They took the Ferdinands back via train, same with the panther. did you expect a tank with a poor engine to take itself all the way through europe

The Sherman nick name is a myth. ronson didnt use that slogan till after the war.
griches100 True facts. It was just the M4 with the model ensign behind the name as a suffix
And fireflies and american 76mm shermans could deal with tigers just fine
@@MsZsc hate to tell you buddy, but the tank that fires first will often win the battle. Only problem is that the 76mm or British 17 pounder couldn’t penetrate a tiger 1 the way the tiger could at range. The sherman was an infantry support tank, simple as that, and the allies tried too hard with continuing the Sherman design
@@themanwithallthewrongopini3551 The Sherman was a general use tank. Every tank is a compromise. The US military went for the compromise that would bite them in the rear the least. Rather than focus on a glorified tank destroyer, they went with a reliable tank that could be quickly repaired by its crew and would be effective against as many realistic threats s possible.
Wait what? The original Sherman wasn't designed for Tank to Tank combat. In fact the US didn't really have a tank to tank designed tank until the Pershing. I don't think. They made do on the variants of Sherman, and the Hellcats and Jackson Tank Destroyer. They believed that speed was key.
And yes the Sherman was mass produced, but the T-34 is the king of quantity over quality. Only it had both. Dat sloped armour tho. Sure the Tiger 2 also had Sloped armour, but how many of them saw combat?
The Sherman was superior to the T-34, not to say that the T-34 was a poor tank. It was probably the second best medium tank in the war, not to mention its cost effectiveness and mass production numbers. It was a close second the the M4 ShermN
You have to admit the the T-34 had crappy armor overall. The T-34 is mainly paper machet compared to the Sherman.
Their tank destroyers were in-service before the Pershing
Tag Lawalin Dat sloped armour tho.
And Epicraptor1 Are you sure? I mean the T-34/85 would wreck a sherman. At least the standard Sherman, not the Easy 8 or the Jumbo or the Firefly.

ironically the german is the most inaccurate line having kugelblitz, panther II and tiger 105 which are all fantasy tanks
Whale Thunder that was when WT tanks wore first introdused and thay needed some tanks to fill the tech tree so gijin had to add in some paper desins.
They did have access to short barrel 105mm howitzer but did they used them? No, they were planned.
You can't expect them to find that many tanks that were actually built. It's like WoT and their numerous tanks that were never built but are in the game as a space filler. (And you know expand the tech tree so you have to grind more, so you get more frustrations, and spend more money on the game. Can't really blame them,

Ahem... Korean War?
sherms biggest weakness is tanks
Sherman's biggest weakness is existing.
Ummm also you can go, third person, you can also control a tank all by yourself without crew members.
The Sherman was made for fighting infantry. Later versions with a 76mm gun where made for tank combat.
The stuart was less of a tank, more of an infantry slaughtering devil.
Sherman? FALSE! The sherman was barly capable even against the panzer IV, germany's contemporary vehicle, the H model outclassed it in every respect.
Comparing the small-hatch M4(75) to the Ausf.H, the PanzerKampfwagen offered no advantages in frontal combat other than the Commander's visibility closed hatch. It did not out do the M4 in mobility, it did not out do it in armor, it did not out do it in reliability, it did not out do it in serviceability, crew survival or anything else.
Early M4A1(75)s against the earlier variants of the PanzerKampfwagen IV generally slaughtered them in frontal combat. The 75mm gun M3 being the only gun to combat the German tanks at ranges in excess of 1,500m until Ausf.G and H entered service in appreciable numbers until later '43.
Nathan Peterson the early models were, to be honest, not really good at AT in general, but they had good HE shells. The long barreled models were much better, they couldn't take a hit from a sherman sure, but the sherman couldnt take a hit from them either.
Truestm In what regards? They could sufficiently deal with any British cruiser or captured Italian tank of the era.
The M4 was quoted as being capable of dealing with the 5,0cm PaK 38 frontally at about 200m based on memoirs of D.A.K. gun crews. The M4 could knock the then current variants of the III and IV at ranges in excess of 1,500m, that's a huge gap. The KwK 40 L/43 and L/48 though superior in armor penetration to either the 75mm M2 or M3, offered no advantage in frontal engagement.
Nathan Peterson ok fine, you win. I still say the sherman is a piece of shmit

"Sherman was a beast"
Except that the tiger can one shot it every time
No, not the case at all.
Er, yes, the Tiger could and would nearly always kill Shermans in one shot. Shermans just didn't have the armor to block it's mighty 88mm gun
Firebolt1089 *could* is true, but *would* is never in any variation of combat conditions assured.
According to a study done by the German Armor/Armament Proving and acquisition facilities *Waffenamt-Prufwesen I* in 1943, from what is presumed to be a small hatch M4 or M4A1, if angled at or beyond 30 degrees sideways, was practically immune to all German tank and anti-tank guns up to and including 1943. With the exception of the 7,5cm KwK 42 l/70's Panzergranate 40/42, below 50m. This included the Tiger's 8,8cm KwK 36 l/56.
Do you have a link to some site with the study? Although it is true that if angled enough (Maybe 45* or so), a Sherman could *theoretically* bounce a Tiger shell, not a lot of records exist of Shermans bouncing Tiger shells. The only instance I know of a Sherman bouncing a Tiger shell was during the battle of the Bulge, when a shell from a Jagdtiger (128mm, not 88mm here though) came at an extremely steep angle at a Sherman and bounced. The shells trajectory was nearly parallel to the Shermans armour, and it bounced off it's rear. In all, you'd have to have a Jumbo variant Sherman to have a hope of bouncing a Tiger shell mostly.
Firebolt1089 The combined mass and kinetic energy of the two piece ammunition, 62lb (28kg) from the 12,8cm PaK 80 l/55 is not the same as the 24lb (10.9kg) round from the 8,8cm KwK 36 l/56.
The figures concern the UFP only of the M4 in question. Other figures show aiming at the side of the turret it would penetrate out to 1,800m, and 2,300m for the side portion of the nose casting.
The figures come from this book:
*_Michael Wittmann and the Waffen SS Tiger Commanders of the Leibstandarte in WWII, Vol. 1._*
Now you need to do the planes.
Come on, Matthew, you old history buff. I know you're curious.
Ths was an ad video. The plane physics probably suck and are unrealistic. That's why he isn't talking about it.
I'm glad you're talking about a game you have obviously not played, or at least a section of a game you haven't played.
I SAID unrealistic. unless you have flown an actual plane you will not fully understand it completely.
Cameron Li You also said "Probably", meaning you have no experience with the aircraft aspect of the game and have no idea just how realistically or unrealistically the planes handle compared to their real-life counterparts.
Jane Doe it is quite realistic they dident add full gauges or plasis to quink fix planes but i still finch its still very realistic and don't blame me if dey added tho's i dednt play that game for a will
Although I can’t directly blame MattPat for this as it *was* and is a huge myth, what he said about Shermans in this video is wrong. The myth that the Shermans were unreliable and bad tanks really only can be said accurately about earlier models. Most later models didn’t use the radial engine, and most of the fire problems actually came from improper ammunition storage (a problem that received a temporary fix in the form of additional armor near the ammo racks, and a long term fix in the form of wet ammunition storage). For the most part they were fairly reliable, easy to fix, and effective.
P.S. “Ronson” was not a wartime nick name, as the slogan “Lights first every time.” wasn’t used until the 50s.
@The PNolandS Glad to see a history buff here buddy

Goddammit.
Ya got me.
I'll admit I started scrolling towards the description.
I almost scrolled up, then realized what i read. Ya almost got me.
haha. i almost scrolled up too. brilliant.
Mattpat, try harder. The Sherman was not designed for tank to tank combat, that was for the tank destroyers and only the tank destroyers. US WWII doctrines made it very clear that tanks were for supporting infantry, helping to assault fortified positions, etc, and the tank destroyer divisions where the ones that killed tanks. Germany, on the other hand, made tanks to kill tanks and tank destroyers to also kill tanks, which is why the later Pz. IVs, all Panthers, and Tigers were made with tank combat in mind, they had a lot of armour on the front and big guns capable of doing quite a number to enemy vehicles from extreme ranges. If you want Sherman tanks that were built with more respect for tank vs tank combat, look towards the M4A3E8 "Easy 8" and the British modified M4A1 and M4A5 variants with a 17 lber gun named the "Firefly".
The Panzer IV was also originally conceived as an infantry support tank, it wasn't until the F2 variant that it received a long-barrel gun. Neither was the Tiger built for tank combat, it was a breakthrough tank, intended to destroy anything in it's path and create openings for lighter forces to exploit.
Gabe Tecot
I know about the Pz. IV being conceived as a support tank with the Pz. III as the main tank to counter tanks, but as for the Tiger...
The reason the Tiger had the 8.8cm KwK 36 was because the Flak 8.8 was found to be exceptionally effective against _tanks_, and furthermore the reason it had 100/80mm of armour front/sides is because most allied vehicles would have extreme difficulty defeating that kind of armour.
The Tiger was designed to be an absolute menace to counter the T-34s and M4 Shermans, which is why they sacraficed production speeds compared to vehicles like the Pz. IV and Panther, the latter of course having a much simpler final drive than what was originally intended for it, leading to it's reputation as a mechanical nightmare. When the Panther was designed, they wanted to have a good, fast tank that could also be produced in huge quantities, the Tiger, however, was just designed to kill.
If you want a breakthrough vehicle, it needs to be a vehicle that can survive tank combat and kill tanks, otherwise you won't be breaking through too many places. German designers understood that.
Dr.Awesome :D
No, sorry, he didn't. He said the M4 Sherman was designed with tank combat in mind. He also mentioned the gyroscope they installed in later Shermans, however it wasn't particularly amazing and couldn't hold a candle to the Panther's ability to fire on the move thanks to it's torsion bar suspention that made rolling over rough terrain feel more like floating through the air. The entire tank was quite stable while moving, especially compared to tanks like the M4 Sherman.
***** I would like to mention two things: A, Bonfire never said that you mentioned 900 million, he was doing math with his facts saying 1 billion - 90 million was 910 million. Also, the estimated amount for all War, armed conflicts and genocides averages around 347.5 million people dead, still quite substantial but nowhere near 1 billion. Please do your research before making yourself look like a fool.
The real lesson we can take away from this video is:
If you want a tank, get a German one because they gave a shit about how they ran or if they would run at all.
“The Sherman is a beast”
Every historian: I don’t think that’s right chief
BRUH IN TODAY THE MOST POWERFUL TANK IS THE ABRAMS
@@paulninoarcena6920 Actually i am pretty sure its the Leopard 2A7+
BRUH HISTORY IS HISTORY
The sherman was atcualy great against japanese tanks since most of the are just light tanks, the sherman IS NOT a light tank , even small AT rifles would prob take out a japanese tank from the back
IN WWII I THINK THE MOST POWERFUL TANK WAS THE TIGER II
I was testing my panzer in war thunder and it took me THREE SHOTS to take a lee
There's 6 crews inside after all
They dont model riveted or poor quality armour buckling or spalling
Well it depends where you hit it, if your hitting it in the same spot like it has a health bar, it won’t die. You could be hitting it again and again, but just because you hit it doesn’t mean you hit any vital part of the tank. Also you just said panzer so there’s no real comparison I can make because I don’t know which panzer
Which panzer, panzer ii? Obviously it would, panzer iii? Obviously it would, early panzer iv? Obviously it would it has a howitzer, panzer 35/8t? Obviously it would I've covered all bases

Or how a dalek looks like a tank cause tanks came first
Well, their shell is basically a personal tank, so seems legit.

Well, it was an entertaining video, at least.
m0nkEz Sherman’s didn’t malfunction often because of how pitch perfect the Americans made it
To be fair when you mass produce something, you massively decrease in detail, and increase error rate.
Though it does increase availability for replacement parts and repairs for logistical handling.. No breakdowns is the better of such.
@@jfobel2204 True, but the Americans still tried their best to perfect the design
m0nkEz wow. Someone thinks America is the best. The Sherman has pretty bad flaws that lead to breakdowns and complete tank Knock-outs. You need to admit that it did
@@ObjectPe- He never said they were the best, he said the Shermans weren't the most likely to malfunction. And it's true, both Soviet and German tanks had more breakdowns than Shermans, although most Soviet tanks were easier to repair than a Sherman so it balanced out.

"imagine trying to aim a tank without a turret!" oh no what am i ever going to do. Its not like it have tracks that let me turn on a dime. Oh nooooooo
@Dark 074 I can feel the sarcastic with this one
hmmm...
yknow, with the whole breaking down thing, i have played this game, and sometimes if they shoot at your gun, they damage the gun breach (basically, the thing that loads shells into the side of the barrel) and then when you fire the shell has a chance to go off INSIDE the tank. which, as you might imagine, is *very* bad.
That's with battle damage, like your breech getting hit. The malfunctions are random chance
+David Dang there are no malfunctions if your tnka is not damaged
+CptHrki Basic malfunction in many tanks is their track is easily broken (out of their track). Especially when in the bad ground area.
If the game implementing that weakness, most of player will stuck in position. Like a standing turret, not a tank... Hahaha... >.
Aeris Reyha Actually, tank threads are specifically made for rough terrain.
+CptHrki actually actually
That's why for me, the least realistic a game is the better...
In my favourite games of all time I can jump 5 times my own height, run as fast as a car at an average speed and shoot fireballs underwater! (I wonder if you know what games I'm talking about)
I also like to take on entire criminal organizations with my bare fists, do lots of crazy moves in 1 on 1 fights or just go on a simpler route, take a sword and a shield and maybe a few helpful items and use them to defeat monsters and dragons and stuff and save the world from evil!
For me, the best video games are 100% fantasy 0% realism
I think you just perfectly described saints row 3 and 4. 100 % non-realism and just total fun, destruction and chaos.
Saints row 4 would be the least realistic of the two.
miniman649 Never played that... To tell the truth I was talking about Super Mario, Zelda, Final Fight, Streets of Rage, King of Fighters, Bonk's Adventure and the likes of that...

2:56 Shows the War Thunder M3 Stuart next to the real life M5 Stuart
The flammability of the Sherman is a mere myth and a false one perpetuated by people who did not fight in them or work on them. As for faulty Shermans, most of the ones that broke down were the M4s with radial plane engines. The spark plugs on those tanks were prone to fowling when idling. Later models with twin v8's fixed this problem. Plus Gaijin has screwed up the 76mm models of the Sherman.

TrailerNoobz there were many different versions of m4 shermans. the very first m4 which was just designated m4 had the most technical problems. if you've seen fury, that's an m4a3e8. a later model with most of the mechanics worked out.
