Loving the wet-looking mud on the bases. Really pulls the models together. I had an idea a while back, for making a Turnip28 force using the halfling models from Wargames Atlantic. Call them the Tater 28ers or something, stick burlap sacks over their heads. Tiny vegetable mutants, that worship potatoes. Maybe use The Aunts Ascendant cult, and stick a couple halflings in a hot air balloon. It would be, altogether, a unique force to say the least.
The combination of the Vallejo water effect is absolutely fantastic and, like you said, it really ties the individual units together. That actually sounds like a really good idea! That's what I like about Turnip28 in that there are no figure ranges that you can't use, if you can imagine it then you can use it. The halfling idea would certainly make for a very interesting looking army 😁
Great stuff Ste. I’ve read a bit about these rules and the background is really interesting. And the kitbashing potential is pretty much limitless, as you’ve clearly demonstrated here. It does sound like fun. 🙂
Cheers Jim! As soon as I saw people creating these, I was like yeah....I need to have a go! Like you said, the kitbashing and opportunities for kitbashing are endless and there is no real right or wrong way for creating your army. The three or so weeks that I spent putting all this together were a lot of fun and definitelt something to my normal projects 😀
Thanks Paul! I've definitely taken inspiration from the countless photographs that I've seen of other people's work and that whole drab grungy look is really appealing. Its always great when a project really captures your imagination 🙂
Cheers Stu, much appreciated! I woud certainly recommend having a go at this to anyone as there is much scope for creativity and weirdness. I'm still waiting for the day that even Dom has a go.....but I'm not holding my breath with that 😅
I'm looking to get back into this and another channel mentioned it. I was feeling a bit meh about GW with its constant updates, pricing and gigantic new models anyway and had been thinking about model agnostic stuff for some time. You've really inspired me as to what can be done with some kitbashing and some imagination
That awesome, thank you! I'm glad you found the video helpful. Turnip28 is a game that I'd thoroughly recommend as from a kitbashing and modelling perspective there is literally endless creativity and you are only limited by your imagination. As its miniature agnostic, you are free to use whatever figures and bits and pieces you choose to build your units and regiments. Definitely my favourite current project 🙂
Thanks Marco and welcome to the awesome world of Turnip28! I would definitely say that the possibilities ate endless. I've said before that with Turnip28 you really only are limited by your imagination. Really glad the video helped for inspiration, that's awesome! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment 😁
Thanks Franklin, much appreciated! I would certainly recommend having a go as there is limitless freedom for creativity when building your units and characters. I have found that plastic Napoleonic kits and Perry Miniatures Hundred Years War/Wars of the Roses are a great starting point for Turnip28 kitbashing 😀
Absolutely luv it, definitely gonna give this a go. Been following your channel for a while and just started with the plastic crack podcast. Going to have a rummage in my bitz box now and have a go at turnip 28, thanks for the inspiration.
Cheers Gary! As soon as I saw Turnip28 on Instagram I was instantly intrigued. The best part about it is that modelling wise its completely up to you. I have used bits and pieces from a whole variety of kits to build my regiment. I would absolutely recommend having q go. Quite a few people from the PCP Facebook group have had a go too 😃
12:30 The head is a GW head from the "Freeguild Greatswords" kit. The box comes with two of these weird skeleton heads. I don't know why it does, but it's cool.
Cheers Lee, glad you enjoyed it mate. It's definitely been one of those projects where it started off pretty small and has just grown and grown. I'm really looking forward to getting two armies on the tabletop 😃
Cheers buddy! I'm one of the worst Dark Souls players ever so this is high praise indeed! Turnip28 has definitely been my favourite project to work on over the past nine months or so 😀
It's been a really enjoyable project to work on. One of the best parts has been seen them all come together with some of the troops looking really pretty bizarre! I'll definitely be making more of these armies though 🙂
I’m surprised Sludge didn’t catch on more. Very similar aesthetic Turnip, but with a beautiful Gore mechanic that transforms the battlefield as the game progresses.
Thanks Dave, glad you like them! I would definitely recommend people have a go given that there pretty much no limits to what you can kitbash. I found that once I had made a handful I just wanted to make more and more 🙂
That's awesome thank you! Turnip28 was definitely one of my favourite projects of last year and and I'm definitely looking forward to starting on my next regiment 😀
I'm going to put together a lore video featuring sock puppets! Cheers Dom, I think I surprised myself with just how much I enjoyed this and the speed it was finished. If only I could do the same with actual Napoleonics 😁
Thanks David! I've been completely taken by Turnip28 and the whole atmosphere and ethos of the world. I'm really looking forward to building my next Turnip28 regiment 😄
Thanks Euan, much appreciated! I always find it's the little touches like this that add real character and personality to a model or unit. Turnip28 definitely gives you creative scope to add these details 🙂
It's such a different project compared to some of the other work on the channel. But I wanted to show people what can be achieved with a bit of kitbashing and some tufts 😁
Long time no hobby update. I like the army and the grimdark paint. Especially the victrix body with coat and napoleonic hat. I would have gone heavy with roots, replacing some arms, maybe use sylvaneth, roots go crazy, but it is just me. I like the guy that tought he is still alive and the rat and that cannon muddy base. Great work! Never knew this type of game existed.
Cheers Lucian, its certainly been a while! Turnip28 and Burrows and Badgers have taken up a lot of my hobby time. This is what I like so much about Turnip28 is that anything can be used from many different kits. You are only limited by your imagination and because every army is kitbashed you know that yours is going to be a unique regiment 🙂
Madness.....pure madness..... yet still so cool. Nice one Ste these look really bizarre and wicked all at the same time. Can't wait to see what other creations you come up with 😁👍
Cheers Miller! Yeah, explaining this to people is never an easy ask but I absolutely love it, there is so much scope for completely off the wall kitbashing and conversions. The next lot are already being planned 😁
That's awesome Dylan, thanks for the kind words! Turnip28 is so different to what I would normally work on but I was really interested from the first time that I saw people creating them. As someone that enjoys kitbashing as much as I do, this is a really interesting way of trying some new things 😀
Hey Justin, thanks for the commnent. I have had a look across RUclips and I cannot find any videos like this. It would actually be really interesting to see a game being played. When I have my second Turnip28 army built and painted, this is definitely somethat I might do 😀
This certainly made me think! The majority of the helmets in these units are from the Perry Miniatures 100 Years War plastic kits. They have a very distinct medieval style. The rest of the heads were a mixture of random bits and pieces from bits boxes - Napoleonic, GW flagellants, even a head from the plastic Gunfighters box by Great Escape Games. The vast majority of the bodies were plastic Napoleonic kits by Warlord Games - Prussian Landwehr and French Line Infantry with at least one Victrix British infantry model in there. The cavalry are a combination of 100 Years War plastics by Perry Miniatures and some pretty old Death Korps of Kreig by GW. The Stump Gun is made using an AWI cannon set by Warlord Games with more of the 100 Years War heads by Perry Miniatures. Hope that helps 😃👍
Cheers Dan! I definitely have plans for making more Turnip28 videos. I'm currently working on my second regiment and will be making a showcase video when these are completed. And I'm already planning my third 😃
Cheers mate! The elephant is probably one of the best things I've worked on in a long time, I really wasn't sure how I wanted it to look but was super happy with how it turned out 🙂
Great work! I know I'm late, but based on the current rules your list would be legal in a 4 Snob Game 'cause the Old Guard grogs form a 'bonus' unit, meaning 3 for the Toff in that cult. Rock on!
Hey Timothy, thanks for the clarification.....most interesting! I would definitely enjoy fielding as many units from the XIII Cohort as I can. I'm currently in the planning stages of my next Turnip28 regiment.....and I think another elephant may be required! Thanks again and thanks for watching much appreciated 🙂
That's awesome Michael, thanks! Like I said, it's a little bit different compared to the things that I would normally work on but I have become really interested in this whole world. Expect more to be made 😀
Thank you! The roots are actually really pretty simple. For the most part I use tufts and attach these to the figure with a dab of glue. When they are painted they form into a sort of solid mass tar gives them more of a root feel. For the longer ones I use bits of an old floor mat. These are bunched together and also a applied to the figure using superglue. Hope that helps 😀
Cheers Rikki! I can definitely say that having a go at Turnip28 is definitely worth it. There is so much scope for creativity and just seeing what works. As there is no set miniature range or rules about how units should look you really are free to use your imagination to create just what you want to 😀
Superb and very inspiring . Love the aesthetic of Turnip 28 but only found it recently and now trying to put forces together. What size bases did you use for the multiples?
That's very kind, thank you! As soon as I saw people's Turnip28 creations, I wa instantly interested but its only really been the last two months or so that I've really looked at putting an army together. The base sizes I usef for Fodder and Brutes are 60mm by 40mm or 6cm by 4cm and are made of MDF. Hope that helps 😀
ive being looking into getting into turnip 28 and id be intrested to get a list of the models you used for you conversons. espeail the elefent and the things you said were 'lance neck' as i couldnt find them online
Most of the kits that I used here were Napoleonic kits by Warlord Games, mainly Prussian Landweher and French Napoleonic Line Infantry. They come with separate heads which is idea for Turnip28 kitbashing. The heads are mostly from the plastic 100 Years War kits by Perry Miniatures as they have the medieval style that fits with the Turnip28 style. The Landsknechts are plastic kits from the Landsknecht Pike and Shotte range by Warlord Games. The Elephant is a plastic kit made by Victrix. The Stump Gun is made using bits and pieces from the AWI cannon set by Warlord Games. The cavalry is made up of 100 Years War cavalry by Perry Miniatures and some old Deaths Korp of Kreig by Games Workshop. Hope that helps 😃👍
Cheers buddy, much appreciated! I just use basing tufts. What I have found is that once they are painted and washed, they dry and set in a really uneven and coarse way which really fits in with the Turnip28 aesthetic. Hope that helps 😀👍
Thank you Evlyn, much appreciated! These were a lot of fun to put together and so very different to the things that I normally paint. Turnip28 is absolutely fantastic for kitbashing and just letting your creativity run wild. I'm already planning my second army and I'm going to be making a follow up video to show how I make my Fodder and Brutes. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment 🙂
Great stuff bud :-) I found Turnip maybe 2 years ago but decided to jump in now, backed the current KS and got some of the older models as well plus some wargames atlantic digital stuff. It is simple but pure style and flavour something I just love also smaller armies can be done easily and space for me atm is a problem for the next 8 months or so. Also smaller games are tbh more intresting Turnip and the Forbidden Psalm seires of games (solo/co-op) I am in love with them also using any models you want again more foucing on creative fun and style :-) Thanks again for these videos seen several of them the last two weeks.
That's awesome, thank you, always good to hear from a fellow Turnip28 fan! The two main things that keep me interested in Turnip28 is the kitbashing and the creative outlet it gives me. The second, like you, I'm alway struggling for space so the small armies and games really appeal to me. I've got some plans for another Turnip28 regiment that I hope to have up on the channel at some point in the near future 😀👍
@@OnPointHQ Sweet! cant wait and yes totally agree space is a big issue as well as time! when we are teens games taking 3 hours is fine but when you are in your 30s or more 3 hours free is a long time to get everything in for the day you want ha
Thanks Dave, much appreciated buddy! I have definitely enjoyed working on my Turnip28 regiments over the last eight months or so, they're really different compared to my usual Bolt Action painting. No worries, all of the bases I use for Turnip28 are 60mm x 45mm MDF bases. For larger models I glue these together but for my regular units I always use the 60mm x 45mm bases. Hope that helps! 😀
You have a guy in your army who died 100 years ago and NOONE told him so he still trucks on like he used to do? Now THAT is a really awesome Turnip(ish) Background for a single Guy ^^
As a base for the mud, I use Vallejo Thick Mud. You can get different types but I tend to use the European Thick Mud. For the water, I use Vallejo Water Effect and drop this into recesses to create puddles. The good thing about Vallejo Water Effect is you can mix it with washes or drop a wash into it while it is still drying to make some dirtier or muddier looking puddles. Hope that helps 😃👍
Thank you! I made the boils using green stuff but I guess you could use any type of modelling putty to make them. That's actually a really good idea, would definitely make for a unique looking unit 😃
Interesting choice of music, Barry Lyndon 'Seven Years War' period. I am afraid still do not fully understand the game system. I can see the attraction, but not for me.
I think it's definitely a 'marmite' type of thing with Turnip28. People are either very interested in it or not at all. I was instantly hooked by the aesthetics of it 😃
Lovely video, but I do want to offer a correction to it - Max Fitzgerald is the person behind Turnip28's aesthetics and art, but he did NOT design the game itself. The actual rules is the work of Gaetano Ferrara, the person behind One Page Rules. That's all!
Thank you! I'm a big fan of One Page Rules so have clearly done Gaetano a disservice here, I'll be sure to correct that moving forward. Thanks again for the clarity 🙂
Gorgeous work Ste. I am very intrigued by T28 but feel ANOTHER project may be the death of me... lol maybe when my Naps is done and I have spares to use up. 🤔 I noticed one or 2 could use some "manscaping" 😂😂
Thanks Cal! I actually think that Turnip28 is the sort of project geared towards spares and left over bits and pieces. The fact that you have free reign to decide how your units look is great for kitbashing. My next regiment are going to be more medieval looking than Napoleonic 🙂
Thanks Anthony! With the colour scheme I wanted to keep them as drab and grim looking as I could. That's a really good idea, I'll have to see if the others would be willing to give that a go 😄
Oh yes, I have certainly embraced the root! This army was a long time in the planning due to other projects but once I started I really couldn't stop. There is so much scope creativity, kitbashing and just letting your imagination go. I already have a few ideas for how I want my next Turnip28 army to look, it is certainly in the planning stages 😀
looks like this started out by someone imitating ww1 brit brodie hats and enfields with medieval kettle hat & flintlock musket cause it was more affordable:D and the rest just grew around it after a few beers:D
This sounds like a fantastic background! We've got a war to fight.....but not much in the way of funds. Everyone should go home, have a root around your cupboards and be back here in an hour 😁👍
Hey Kelly, thanks for your question. I believe that Sludge was the first to be published as a full game but the Turnip28 concept and aesthetic has been around for a little while now 😀
For the roots I've been using standard basing tufts applied with glue. When these have been painted and washed it causes the tufts to become coarse and rigid which gives the effect of gnarled and twisted roots. Hope that helps 😀👍
Cheers mate. Yeah I think the whole aesthetic does not appeal to some people but that's what I love about this hobby. You can still appreciate what other people are doing even if it's not something you play or are involved in 🙂
Bwhahahahahahahaha! Excellent use of vegetable punnery there! Cheers mate, this is definitely my current obsession, enjoying every minute of kitbashing and painting it 😄
Love this! When I first sat down to work on the elephant, I was working out what I coul do to it to make it look mutated but also to keep it looking like an actual elephant. Removing the tail and replacing it with a Skaven tail was one of the first things I did and was amazed at just how natural it looked! 😀

I've got some plans for another Turnip28 regiment that I hope to have up on the channel at some point in the near future 😀👍
@@OnPointHQ Sweet! cant wait and yes totally agree space is a big issue as well as time! when we are teens games taking 3 hours is fine but when you are in your 30s or more 3 hours free is a long time to get everything in for the day you want ha
hi, wow i love it lol, brill job, i like it, but can you tell me what size bases you have for your different units, thanks, all the best, Dave.
I like the idea that he is so utterly terrifying that his comrades are a bit too scared to tell him 😃
how did you do your mud please ?
As a base for the mud, I use Vallejo Thick Mud. You can get different types but I tend to use the European Thick Mud. For the water, I use Vallejo Water Effect and drop this into recesses to create puddles. The good thing about Vallejo Water Effect is you can mix it with washes or drop a wash into it while it is still drying to make some dirtier or muddier looking puddles. Hope that helps 😃👍
danke my basing just isnt feeling muddy enough, i will try put a tube up soon on my snail tank@@OnPointHQ
Love the elephant❤ how did you do the boils. I'm thinking of using my elephants as the illegitimate children 🤔
Thank you! I made the boils using green stuff but I guess you could use any type of modelling putty to make them. That's actually a really good idea, would definitely make for a unique looking unit 😃
@@OnPointHQ thanks for the reply. I'm mid way through some chaff. Next project will be the 🐘 🐘 🐘
Interesting choice of music, Barry Lyndon 'Seven Years War' period.
I am afraid still do not fully understand the game system.
I can see the attraction, but not for me.
I think it's definitely a 'marmite' type of thing with Turnip28. People are either very interested in it or not at all. I was instantly hooked by the aesthetics of it 😃
Cool, can't wait for the next video on Turnip28.
Cheers buddy! I'm already planning the next one which will probably be how I go about kitbashing the foot sloggers such as Fodder and Brutes 🙂
war elephant is ecellent!
Proper Mint!
Cheers buddy! Definitely one of the more bizarre projects that I've worked on but it's been really enjoyable 🙂
Gorgeous work Ste. I am very intrigued by T28 but feel ANOTHER project may be the death of me... lol maybe when my Naps is done and I have spares to use up. 🤔
I noticed one or 2 could use some "manscaping" 😂😂
Thanks Cal! I actually think that Turnip28 is the sort of project geared towards spares and left over bits and pieces. The fact that you have free reign to decide how your units look is great for kitbashing. My next regiment are going to be more medieval looking than Napoleonic 🙂
Great looking army. I love the colours you used. Not my cup of tea. But an interesting game of black powder against a normal army of the period?
Thanks Anthony! With the colour scheme I wanted to keep them as drab and grim looking as I could. That's a really good idea, I'll have to see if the others would be willing to give that a go 😄
MORE TURNIPS! EMBRACE THE ROOT!
Like your army
Thanks Gordon! I'm quite close to finishing my second Turnip28 army and hope to have a video about this out soon 😀👍
What came first, Turnip28 or Sludge?
Hey Kelly, thanks for your question. I believe that Sludge was the first to be published as a full game but the Turnip28 concept and aesthetic has been around for a little while now 😀
O for awersom.....
Top stuff, thank you! I'm currently planning my next Turnip28 army so there will definitely be more videos coming soon 😃
What are you using for those roots?
For the roots I've been using standard basing tufts applied with glue. When these have been painted and washed it causes the tufts to become coarse and rigid which gives the effect of gnarled and twisted roots. Hope that helps 😀👍
@@OnPointHQ thank you. I went and bought some today.
Not my thing but great work and what ever makes you happy I say
Cheers mate. Yeah I think the whole aesthetic does not appeal to some people but that's what I love about this hobby. You can still appreciate what other people are doing even if it's not something you play or are involved in 🙂
they look great tho mate cracking work smashing those together, if SWEDEn isnt a faction why isnt it? haha
Bwhahahahahahahaha! Excellent use of vegetable punnery there! Cheers mate, this is definitely my current obsession, enjoying every minute of kitbashing and painting it 😄
RAT ELEPHANT 🐘 🐀👍
Love this! When I first sat down to work on the elephant, I was working out what I coul do to it to make it look mutated but also to keep it looking like an actual elephant. Removing the tail and replacing it with a Skaven tail was one of the first things I did and was amazed at just how natural it looked! 😀
