What is amazing is that the 10,000 also had camp followers/families to protect. Being an infantry unit who had lost their leaders, they adapted into cavalry, engineers etc. and evolved new leaders. There was nothing like it until the Vikings.
There's a story, probably apocryphal, of how Clearchus, a Spartan exile, when facing death, was asked if he had any last requests. Being a true son of Lacedemon, he asked for a comb, and did what his forbears had done at Thermopylae when facing certain extinction; he combed and dressed his long hair.
Ive only just found this channel and its me through and through!Subscribed 😊Now to go through everything ive missed.Even though i have read most of it its always nice to hear a new description .Cheers 😊😊
@@WineDarkSea Love to hear that! I personally find the history of the Mediterranean amazing. Your videos even inspired me to pick up Assassin's Creed Odyssey just to explore the classic Greek world more. Keep up the great work!
Transparentcy...it was not all successful. Although I personally think it was an amazing military accomplishment. Several times some of the Greeks overestimated themselves and underestimated the enemy. In one instance a group of Greeks having been part of a successful raid decided to go back again. Even though they were warned by others, possibly Xenophon himself, not to return, rather continue the march. The group expressed the idea that they were superior because they were Greeks and went on the attack. They were defeated and all either captured or killed. As their comrades continued their march to the sea.
