Avast is a very shady company. Don't trust them

  • Today I delve into Avast's past to uncover their shady business practices, like their subsidiary Jumpshot, which harvested and sold user data to third parties without the user's consent. Even with apologizing and shutting down their mass data collection, I would still definitely not trust a company with this track record to be my VPN or antivirus provider. Thanks for watching!

    Wow, unbelievable. I know when I subscribed to them in the past, it was very difficult to unsubscribe. I fought them tooth and nail (they're full of roadblocks) and finally was able to accomplish my goal. That was a real turnoff for me, I'm so done with them! 😑😅

    I never trusted Avast because it pretty much just killed every computer I installed it on (i'm not kidding), but thanks for another valid reason to stay 10 feet away from them.

      If you want a free antivirus that's better than windows defender Bitdefender is pretty good

    Well said, Avast used to be good 10 years ago, now it's just a load of sh*t, and pure bloat ware. I use Windows defender and Windows cleaning tools.

    • @TotallyNotK0
      @TotallyNotK0  7 месяцев назад +1

      Right on. I still firmly believe that the built-in tools can still get the job done, as long as you stay smart and relatively up-to-date on the world of cybersec

      i just use windows defender and try to look for malware myself personally
      if i have an issue i can just reinstall windows or even try to remove the malware myself
      antiviruses are kinda pointless, although i suppose malwarebytes counts as i can just run the free trial setup in safe mode to remove malware and then uninstall it.

    Switch to Linux... No need for Anti Virus on Linux!

      Yup. I still have ClamAV for a scanner just to be sure, though

      @@TotallyNotK0 Fair and understandable if you're coming from Windows.
      File scans are eeehhh meh in Linux and doesn't really do anything....... guess you'll understand once you've learned more about the OS internals.
      For security my usualy hardnening process and maybe rkhunter. Just hard to explain.

    I hear the "would you trust a company that used to do this" argument, but then why use, just for instance, Windows and RUclips?

    • @TotallyNotK0
      @TotallyNotK0  7 месяцев назад

      Because unlike Avast, those are actually useful lol. Really nobody should use Windows in my opinion, but there's a lot of things that only work on Windows so some people just need to use it. As for RUclips, it's simply because it's a good and useful enough service
      Also this argument is more important in the context of antiviruses then a service like RUclips, but still is a valid argument for Windows

    • @julienb5815
      @julienb5815 7 месяцев назад

      @@TotallyNotK0 RUclips isn't just RUclips, it's Google and it's everywhere: the search engine, the e-mail service (that you can't really avoid because even if you don't use it yourself, your contacts do), the huge ad platform, the bloody captchas, of course Chrome, the "login with Google" crap, etc. And Google didn't use to do that 3 years ago, they still very much do.

    • @TotallyNotK0
      @TotallyNotK0  7 месяцев назад +1

      @@julienb5815 True, but like I said, people use it because it's a good service they're offering. Also because it is so entrenched and over-used that people just stick to what's popular or what they know. Sad that that's how it is

      @TotallyNotK0  7 месяцев назад

    Which antivirus should I use then?

    • @TotallyNotK0
      @TotallyNotK0  7 месяцев назад +1

      Good question. If you can trust that you and everyone using the device can do so carefully, not clicking random links or running random files, then you can get away with Windows defender plus a good ad blocker. Now, if you feel like people using the PC are prone to running suspicious stuff or clicking random links, then maybe getting a second-opinion scanner like Malwarebytes is a good idea or run Hitman Pro every now and then (you may do this too even if you can trust you'll be careful, just in case and if you want to be totally sure). If you feel like you do really need something to scan all of your files and data, and watch the behavior of everything on your PC, etc. etc., then consider one of these antivirus solutions. I know Kaspersky and Bitdefender are effective
      tl;dr: No need unless you can't trust yourself to be careful
