I love this review style. It feels just like visiting a friends house and talking about the system. I can't even remember the last time someone else did anything like this. It can be followed up with a formal review with comparisons or you can just cram it all in one video as well while showing different speaker placements etc....

For the love of God finally a decent review. I really like your new format, people who waych these reviews are music junkies so being able to finally hear music in your reviews is very welcomed. I'm very surprised because the way you set up the mics actually picks up the sound quality of the speakers very well. Might I add probably one of the better sounding reviews of speakers that I've heard to date.

Funny. I watched first - listening through my Boston Acoustics CR9s - decent enough speakers in their day. You did a good job miking because the music was crisp and clear. Except when it wasn't - when you were talking. Then everything went mono. Anyways, then I plugged in my own Elac Debut 2 6.2s and listened again. Wow. It's amazing to think that sound came from your source, through your preamps/amps throught the Elacs, into the air and into your mics, into your computer, uploaded to RUclips, downloaded from RUclips, run through my AppleTV into my Yamaha receiver and finally back into my Elacs. and the music still sounded fantastic. My mind just blew up. I'm waiting for a vintage preamp and power amp to arrive from an eBay purchase. These Elacs can only sound better.

I picked up a pair of these for Black Friday... They're my first brand-new piece of hifi. Lots of fun, versatile, big and clear-sounding. A little more warmth for vocals would be appreciated, but as they are, they still sound lovely. Definitely subwoofer-not-required speakers, at least in my upstairs duplex unit with a small, hardwood-floored living room. Unfortunately, it seems I got a lemon pair and one of the tweeters is very, very shot just a few days after unboxing and pretty relaxed listening. I'll just be here waiting patiently for Amazon to have them back in stock and send me my replacement set...
As my first piece of kit, I can't claim to have any point of reference from the current market. Part of me wants to buy half a dozen sets of bookshelves en masse and do a round robin to decide which I want to keep, but I don't think my credit card would be too happy with that.
I think the perfect buyer for these speakers is someone like me - lots of time spent critical listening and loving their music and just need a place to start.

I just bought my ELAC B6.2 several days ago at Best Buy 50% off. They went fast at most of the Best Buy stores. I been hearing good reviews and thumbs up on these brilliant speakers from Andrew Jones. I use mine on my newer Onkyo 2 channel receiver and they sound awesome. Being a fan of JBL because "I wanna hear the truth". Yet these Elac sure creates a good sound stage. I'm sure they are still in the "break" in period and soon as they pass thru that point they will be even better. The vocals are what I like about these. So life like and normal essence. I highly recommend these for those seeking a nice sounding and affortable speaker system.

Hi Ron - I do REALLY, REALLY like that you actually allow us to hear what you're describing in your reviews. I think the ideal New Record Day review would have a nice balance of you describing, showing and educating with long enough sound examples too, exactly like you did with this review. It's nice to see when a reviewer actually admits a mistake. This gives you even more credibility. Regarding adding mass to your stands, I was a believer in adding significant weight to speaker stands about three years ago. I added 50 LBS of washed, reclaimed lead shot to each of my Pangea speaker stands. The result? Makes my $1600 a pair of B&W CM5 stand mount speakers that I paid $899 for, sound like a $5K pair of speakers; wait..... actually sounds like a five grand pair of floorstanders. Best tweak EVER. Thanks for the review!

  • @SK-ps5pn

Yes PLEASE more speakers reviews like this. Very convincing .... I'd go buy a pair after your review. And the irony is my Dad already has this exact pair, bought 2 years ago) now paired to a NAD receiver from the early 2000s, connected by spare set of Kimber Kable 4PR I had.
Very impressive, balanced sonic profile. Multi-layered and there's always more details and depth to reveal. They are very reminiscent of the Energy 22 Pro Monitors we had in the '80s/'90s and that's saying something, as those speakers put Energy onto the world stage.

I'm 60 or 65 hours into listening to the B6.2's in the month or so since I bought them on Amazon. They've been flawless but a little sterile since the first play. Over the weekend I felt like something had changed and they were sounding warmer and really easy to enjoy. I ended up pulling out some of my true fave cd's and had a good 5 or 6 hour session. The only issue was the wife complaining that I was really pushing the volume. I hadn't noticed and the speakers were still in first gear. Bargain buy of 2018.

Despite their lower price, that is one of the BEST recordings of live speakers that I have heard. You must have excellent room acoustics to pull that one off! How did you mic/record this?
    Did you use two mics?
FWIW, I'm playing back through Threshold S350e and S-450e biamped to JBL 800's with solid, inverted, Titanium dome mids. Great video!

One thing that I always the reviewer is to list the tracks played in a review process and possibly tell the reader which in this case is the watcher/listener what to listen for when evaluating a speaker or any hifi component. This way someone who has let's say an Elac speaker can try the tracks and listen for a specific sound and come up with a conclusion.
I think this is the way to go for an innovative review, which can involve others.
Keep up the great work. And thank you for all your doing.

it's really awsome that you are doing this, giving people a chance to view how you evaluate speakers. And I get a chance to listen to the music you use, and the way you describe the music, awesome!!! You are going to be the talk of the town! One suggestion, I think you might just want to... not talk because it interferes with the transmission, sometimes on my speakers (desktop BOSE) the left or right speakers flutters. Instead, what you could do is to type your comments on the keyboard, and let the words pop up instantaneously on the video (is that possible?) So that people can benefit from your comments while not being interrupted from their listening. Thank you Ron for doing this!!!! I look forward to your next speaker review!!!!!!

Hey Ron, I have not had the chance to hear these speakers in person and likely wont any time soon as there are no shows in California anymore and no dealers near me. I could run down to ELAC North America myself as they are close by, but can't get time off work for such things these days. (Andrew, Chris and I are good acquaintances). I am going to try to visit him again next year at least if I get the chance. They tell me the door is always open for me..that is nice. Knowing Andrew and his builds I bet the voice coils and pole ports are huge, which partly explains the speed. From judging by the RUclips video here, I can say they do indeed sound different than the first Debuts. In fact, in my opinion, they are a notable improvement and the originals were amazing in their own right.
Oh, I caught that Sean sign-off...you don't stop do ya...LOL
By the way, Andrew recommends kitty litter for filling speaker stands over sand. It actually makes scientific sense because kitty litter is better at absorbing any moisture and will keep things dry between the metal and the fill. When sand gets a little moist it can eventually rust from inside because without air it will stay moist. Andrew is also a physicist. When he invited me for the first time to interview him, I was sure glad I took physics! Even at that I barely kept up. One of the nicest guys in the biz by the way.

Good stuff. Listening to these over my computer system, vintage receiver and Micca MB42X desktop set up. The Elac Debut 6.2s are about six-seven feet from me in an equilateral triangle from my desk to my left. Although the youtube recording and the Miccas do not sound exactly like the Elacs, there is a clarity and detail and some bass still there. Of course the actual speakers are even better, more presence and low end. The new Elacs are closer to an audiophile speaker, more refined, more top end detail, faster, better staging. They really do sound two or even three times better than their asking price. If you're on a budget and you have at least a mid-fi integrated with some grunt. These will do you! More bass? Add a sub. But decent bass as is, not extraordinary, but good!
Yeah, this format is good as long as you do follow ups and a conclusion!

Considering you typically listen to more expensive speakers, I'm glad you're listening to the affordable speakers people rave about so much. If you're impressed by those, I think the UB5's are WAY better. I'm surprised you still haven't tried the UB5's. I think the UB5's also offer more value. 3-way design, better enclosure, concentric mid-range/tweeter design, aluminum drivers, better crossover network, magnetic grill covers. Aside from the ELAC logo, and the fact that they were both designed by Andrew Jones, I don't think they're similar at all. Even the voicing is different to me. That's not a good/bad thing, just an observation. As a matter of fact, I feel like A.J.'s Pioneer BS22LR and FS52 towers share more of the sound signature with the UB5's than the Debut or Debut 2.0's. I mentioned this to him last time I went by to check out their Argo Navis speakers.

A great review. I am happy to see in depth reviews for affordable speakers that buyers on a budget are likely to choose for their own setups.
I have read and heard dozens of very positive reviews for the Debut 2.0 B6.2s and, well, I might've gotten them for half price on Cyber Monday! How could I not?
My experience: At very first, right out of the box, they sounded a bit reserved and there was definite lack in the higher frequencies. The speakers were delivered while it was cold outside and I opened them up a few hours after they had been indoors. I suspect the magnets and baskets were still a bit cool when I started listening. So, before becoming critical, I just left music playing at low volume overnight and through the next day while I was at work to run them in a bit.
That weekend, after a good 72 hours of break-in time, I did some critical listening. I found what you found. These are an incredible value for the money. Nice frequency response, great imaging and sound stage, no harshness.. they disappear into the sound stage and present music with nice depth.
I am driving them with an older Onkyo integrated amplifier that has recently been serviced. I am very, very happy with them!
Thanks for doing this video, would love to see more like this!

Nice review , it’s almost like being in an audition room listening to the Elac B6.2s. I put on my Grado headphones and listened in a critical frame of mind. Liked what I heard so purchased a pair, soon see how they sound in my system. I’m kind of a nut when it comes to bookshelf speakers having a collection of home brewed and manufactured speakers.

After watching your video, the Zero Fidelity, and The Home Theater Hobbyist videos, I picked up a pair of Elac B6.2 speakers. I got them from Amazon for half price, Bonus! I have them hooked up to my Parasound Halo P3, and A23. Sources are my Rega Planar 1, Marantz UD7007 disc player, and Cambridge Audio up-sampling DAC. Initial impressions right out of the box, Very Nice build quality, and pretty nice balanced sound. I am anxious to hear what they will sound like after I give them some break in time. Thanks for all of your great videos man!

I liked your previous style of reviewing, I do however like this approach better. A small criticism; talk less during the track. Using a very revealing dac, amp and headphones I feel like I not only heard the speakers themselves but heard a bit of the room as well and I really enjoyed that experience. Nothing at all to say about the room, sounds really good. The track length I think was very appropriate. The music chosen was great. I would just prefer to hear the track you've chosen and then your comments between tracks. I personally don't want to skip what you have to say about your experience, just not while the gear is speaking for itself. The format I think though is great. Gives a little view into gear and a sound different than we the viewers have in our own homes. Very small criticism aside this was a great review. Very enjoyable. Makes me want to upgrade from my B6's.

Great concept for first impressions! It reminds me of when I have friends over for new gear listening sessions. The video feels more organic like this.

  • @MacellaioNero
    @MacellaioNero 5 лет назад +7

The idea behind the format and the impressions both make this worthwhile, but the execution and presentation could do with some minor work.
There's an occasional audible pop when the audio transitions from the speakers mics to the voice mic. It's distracting even without the pop, but as it is... it really takes you out of the experience whenever it occurs.
If you can't make the transition between the different mics smoother through editing, thoughts as subtitles might be a more practical solution, if a little less elegant.
A picture in picture style showing some shots of the setup and the gear would be a creative way to develop the format and add polish. While perhaps superficial, it would serve as more visual stimuli that would appeal (especially) to newer viewers. Prospective buyers want to see the product. Expressions and reactions are valuable though, so finding a way to keep both would be preferable.
Additionally, information about the tracks, either in the video itself or the description would be a very welcome inclusion.

The other option would be to add a more smoothly mixed voice over. If it's important to articulate your thoughts as you're listening, take notes. Film yourself taking notes. Those moments can serve as visual cues for for adding commentary after the fact.

Hey Ron nice review, though I might suggest associated equipment. Did you move to a new place by the way ? I like it. I'm curious to know what you think of these Elac compared to the Buchardt S300 you also recently reviewed. I'm seriously thinking of getting my first ever bookshelf speakers and the Buchardt's are at the top of my list. FYI I was originally thinking of going with GE Triton 2+ or MB Silver 500 but after several emails with other in the know people including Sean who I've been following on his RUclips channel. I've come to believe the towers would be overkill in my rather small undedicated living room 15' long by13' Wide and 8' High. The speakers are going on the short wall with two floor to ceiling windows firing into living room adjacent to eat in kitchen another 8' by 25'
I look forward to your opinion.

Probably like others reading here, I also couldn't pass these up for $150. Here's the thing--I don't have an amp for it yet. First thought was PS Sprout, but that to me is too expensive. I feel like prices should be in the same "league." So I was thinking of the Vista Audio Spark. I know Sean had one of those; but you've got the B6.2s. Hmm... maybe this could be a podcast question for you guys (digging the podcast, too): as a **speculative** question (unless either of you have tried that combo), does the Spark have enough juice for the Elacs? Thanks again for the great reviews!

I'd recommend the Yamaha R-S202BL Stereo Receiver if you're looking to stay in the same "league." It has 100w per channel, while the B6.2 can handle a max of 120w, so you'll never worry about damaging them. I've used both the B6 and B6.2 with this receiver. 75-80% power is about the maximum enjoyable experience with most louder music in a 21'x21' room with high ceilings. 100% power was disturbingly loud where all the surrounding neighbors in the subdivision could clearly hear the music just outside their house. The Bluetooth connection works flawlessly. It automatically connects to your phone with one press of the Bluetooth button on the remote. There were never any interruptions walking everywhere in a 2.5k sq. ft. house.
The B6 has a boomier bass, especially the closer you put them toward the wall, which is nice when listening to pop music or watching action movies without a sub. I used them with a 10" powered sub that was turned down to 40% power, so sometimes the bass could be overwhelming, but the kids love it. The B6.2 speakers are much more bright in the treble, but higher pitch vocals, horns, and percussions sound superior to the B6 and the clarity is better especially at lower volumes. Both speakers took about 50 hours minimum to break in, with about 100 hours to fully break in. After breaking them in they both get warmer, while the B6 bass gets richer and fuller spectrum, the B6.2 gets a stronger bass and a less glassy or edgy sounding treble.
Both speakers are priced well below their league, especially now at $150, which is why you see reviewers comparing them to $1k+ speakers. The reciever I mentioned is now $120 on Amazon, it was $150 for most of the spring and the entire summer, as I was interested in purchasing another one for a family member.

Everything you played was pretty laid back genre. Would have been nice to hear some brass, orchestral, doo wop, rock, etc. I consider myself an audiophile but don't limit my listening choices to easy listening or jazz.
Let's hear some kick in the pants music at higher volume once you get those pups broken in. I'll keep enjoying my B&K 602s2 duo for dynamic music and my original Polk monitor 4's for softer female vocals.

I like the format, s since it is royalty free music, you could go longer on songs, I don't know, may be a condensed version, and a long version, or one extended review with main review, at the beginning, and more raw-ish footage with longer listening sessions after.
Second point, your comments are what we want to hear, but they cut into the rest of the track, removing us from the experience. But I do like this format over watching you listen with the voice over. Good luck on solving that :)

I've owned a set of these for a about a month now, I started with a Yamaha AST-A10 Active Servo Power Amp, they did ok with it, seemed to lack the brightness everyone talked about compared to the original Debuts (which I also own). Then I got a Crown XLi1500 and man, what a difference, the speakers really came alive. They are very difficult to drive, so if you have them connected to a typical receiver or low power amp, you will not be getting the full breadth of what these things can do. If you're really in to heavy bass you will probably need a sub, but without a sub you will get a very balanced sound.
