"Live, local and latebreaking" is the marketing campaign launched in 1995 that would take WBAL from a distant 2nd place in the ratings to a neck and neck battle with WJZ that continues to this day.

Norm Lewis was in Louisville at WAVE for a few years in the ‘70s before heading to Baltimore. He was known as a gimmicky, classic mid-70s showman (once out on glasses with windshield wipers to forecast rain). WAVE was very professional, and Louisville is tornado alley for that matter, and Lewis clashed with his colleagues over his on air cutesy demeanor.
When I saw him on air in Baltimore circa 2002, he had become professional and comfortable within himself. I was pleased to see that change.

WBAL-TV originally opened its first studio at 2610 Charles Street when it began programming in 1948. One notable show that aired
there was "Good Morning Maryland" a variety show hosted by zanies Brent Gunts and Jay Grayson, which was a cross between
"Don McNeill's Breakfast Club" and "The Today Show". Another
was "The Candy Corner" a talent show for children, hosted by
Al Ross. Because the station was trying to add more programs
and its studios and offices were getting too small,Eleven moved
to a much larger studio and offices which had far more space
near Television Hill at 3800 Hooper Avenue sometime in the
late 1950s. WBAL still uses that same studio today in Baltimore.
