@@MWA1407 that's what happens when you read any religious book carefully. That said, i don't think that actual believing matters that much with religions, it's more about the approach you have with them. And islam is too extreme and radical about a lot of things.
I just hate it when revert brothers and sisters who would be already going through a hard time are misguided by Muslim brothers. As long as the dress is compatible with general Islamic guidelines on properly covering yourself, it doesn't matter which traditional clothing your wear. my late grandfather is Japanese from shinto and converted to Islam. He still practiced some Japanese traditional culture such as being very obedient to the elderly, polite to every people he met, letting the elderly eat 1st before he will eat , etc. I guess even in some cases, Japanese culture can be assimilated with Islam.

Thank you for bringing in Dr Yamamoto! As a Muslim who specialised in Japanese studies, has been living in Japan for several years and is lucky to actually have a job where I am constantly in discussion with Japanese people and study the Japanese market, I have a lot of things I want to say. I am living in my day-to-day life the idea of making Japanese people comfortable for them to open up to you and listen to what you have to say. To have a certain attitude that is not too ''exotic'' for them is essential when engaging with Japanese people. And a lot of foreigners here fail to notice that. I think it's true with other cultures to some extent but it's super critical in a high-context culture like in Japan (same in Korea). I also understand what he means by he wants Islam to grow slowly in Japan. Japanese are very very careful people and are usually suspicious of anything foreign (but not as true for the younger generation), so I don't see pushing dawah in Japan like how it's done in other countries having any positive effect. Especially when there is already a negative view of religion among the population (even if people are pretty spiritual). Islam needs to grow organically in a way that appeals to the Japanese high sensitivity. It's also something that I noticed here, is that even if Japanese people don't appear religious, they are actually very spiritual, but not in the way organised religions define it. Statistics show that younger Japanese are actually more spiritual than older generations (which tend to be more materialistic), while we see an opposite trend in Korea. I'm very fascinated to see where this country is going in the future. I hope that Islam will have a more important place in Japan with Allah's permission.

WW1 and WW2 both happened under secular states (not to mention the bloodiest centuries, the 19th and 20th centuries, which happened when secularism was adopted), so I wouldn't really say that people live in peace under it. And I wouldn't call peaceful a society where suicide is through the roof and people drink or work to the extreme to forget their purposeless lives.

Also, its also flawed since suicide bombers are not properly listed as well like they should be, Islam is the only religion with suicide bombers. Catholic countries actually have lower suicide rates than Muslim countries if you add the total and make an avg. Also suicide rate in secular countries is way overexaggerated by Muslims. BTW did you know Somalia has a higher suicide rate than Japan? Somalia is one of the most devout Muslim countries. I don’t know much about Japanese customs and culture. However, I can see that Dr. Yamamoto concept of crafting an Islamic Japanese culture to provide a sense of belonging does stem out of necessity. I feel he wants to convey that Islam already exists in aspects of Japanese culture, which is a very effective message.
I, as a Muslim, joined the merchant navy and in time, I was assigned to travel to Japan to take delivery of a brand new ship, called the MV Bora Universal, back in the mid seventees. I flew over to Tokyo embarked on a long bus trip through the highways and byways of Japan to the harbour of Kobe. The civility and mannerisms of the broad general populace of the Japanese is quite noticeable which impressed me the most. In fact their mode of living was very 'Islamic' to my youthful impressionable mind, as campared and practised by the local Muslims where I came from. Their work ethic was definitely more intensive and progressive compared to where I came from and I'm definitely not disparaging my community. I'm nearing my seventees, and my respect for the Japanese culture is an indelible one. Forever grateful to ALLAH for affording me that traveling experience. Alhamdulillah.

Great conversations! As a Kazakh Muslim, I can tell you that you can keep your culture and become a Muslim at the same time. Our ancestors were nomadic tribes who believed in Tengr which means God then Islam came to the Kazakh steppe and people except it easily because of the similarities. When Quran explains everything, it made a lot of sense and they knew it’s the truth, people understood their God better. About the culture, we are still the nomadic people till this day, because of the way of life and the culture surrounding it. We also feel the energy, the sprits of our ancestors and it’s not shirk. Allah forgives our ancestors that lived before the Islam, they will be judged according to their actions, there were a lot a good person that lived before the Islam. Killing the innocent, stealing, sex outside of the marriage, lie, gossip, these are some of the sins that everyone knows as common sense and many more things that a good person avoids. Regardless of their religion, if you avoid these things you will be judged accordingly. We all are the children of Adam, Allah is the most merciful and Allah knew all the best.
Not true? What is culture? It could be festivals rooted in paganism or festivals which include dance and music. Islam affects that because certain versions of islam prohibit music ,dance , intermixing. It prohibits art. Prohibits music Prohibit certain food. Dr. Yamamoto's reflections were a feast for the soul, the way he skillfully linked everything through his understanding of Tawheed. I loved that he started his discussions by referring to Dr. Umar Farooq's essay on Islam and the Cultural Imperative and then follows it by showing all the subtle but important ways in which Islam can once again heal a suffering humanity - the Inward coming before the Outward. Props to Br. Jalal for his questions and reflections as always - there was so much to absorb and relfect on; I can't imagine the pace and depth of this discussion being easy to keep up for most of us.
Something very similar about the 'tea ceremony' that i can relate to my Malay/Indonesian heritage is the practice of 'wayang kulit' when Islam was first introduced to the Southeast Asian islands back in the 14th century. Previously in the regions of Malaya, Sumatera and Java the predominant religion was Hindu and Buddhism. The early scholars and preachers slowly introduced islam through adapting the indigenous cultural norms of the region. One of it was the 'wayang kulit' or the shadow-puppets play, which was originally used to depict the legends of Hindu epics such as Ramayana and Mahabharata (some still exist in today's hindu majority Bali). Sunan Kalijaga, one of the 9 Walis (scholars) was known to spread islam through these wayang kulits. The practice was modified and adapted to tell islamic stories and teachings. This is how islam was introduced and spread across the Javanese island. Today indonesia has the largest muslim population in the world. I do believe that Islam is a way of life, culture is acceptable so long it does not conflict with the main principles of Islam. It would be interesting to see a Japanese Islamicate culture. Although in my opinion it should be left to develop organically and naturally over time.

I know our brothers have good intentions, but I find it sad that someone would tell a revert that they shouldn’t be wearing their cultural clothing. As long as it falls in line of our modest criteria it should be permissible no? By that logic it should be haram to wear a suit since that would fall under “infidel” clothing.

From the little I've studied regarding Japanese culture (studied the language for 2 years in college) and having visited Japan for business, I would think the Japanese would actually resonate a lot with Islam, considering its simple creed, and concepts like 'Ihsan' which seem to mirror Japanese virtues on pursuit of perfection. Not to mention Islamic calligraphy culture, and historically even Islamic military arts from the Furussiyyah mirror heavily with Japanese Kyudo (Japanese Archery). So this is interesting.
There needs to be Japanese muslims who are giving dawa back in Japan. They understand the culture and the similarities and would do a great job at conveying that to the population.

I am interested to learn why dear Muslims bear witness that "there is no god but Allah", yet strangely it is Allah himself who CONTRADICTED this creed in the Shahada through his outrageous claim in QS 29:46 to be another God-the true God of Israel. Because ALL the PROPHETS of Israel, beginning with Moses, knew that the GLORY/presence/shekinah of the true God of Abraham-the Most High-descended and ENTERED CREATION and walked in the Garden of Eden at the time of Adam and Eve, dwelt among the people in the tabernacle of Moses (Exodus 40:34-35) and in the temple of Solomon in Jerusalem. But the glory of Allah of the Qur’an CANNOT ENTER CREATION. How then can Allah's claim to be ONE with the true God of Israel be true if they are clearly the OPPOSITE of each other?: In the Torah, after Adam and Eve sinned, "...they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the PRESENCE of the Lord God among the trees of the garden". (Genesis 3:8). In the Torah, God instructed Moses: "And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may DWELL AMONG THEM." (Exodus 25:8) 'Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Moses could not enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.' (Exodus 40:34). God would give Moses commands from inside the tabernacle in the Holy of Holies above the Ark of the Covenant: "There, above the cover between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the covenant law, I WILL MEET WITH YOU and give you all my commands for the Israelites". (Exodus 25:22) Later, during the time of Solomon, "When Solomon finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the GLORY OF THE LORD FILLED THE TEMPLE. The priests could not enter the temple of the Lord BECAUSE THE GLORY OF THE LORD FILLED IT. When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the Lord above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the Lord, saying, “He is good; his love endures forever.” (2 Chronicles 7:1-3). His love? Yes, because-unlike the out of reach Kaaba god who 'sends down a stone from heaven' to Muslims-the true God of Israel, the Almighty, LOVES his people and himself comes down and dwells with them! Whom do you choose? However, OPPOSITE to what Moses and all the Prophets of Israel knew about the true God of Abraham entering creation, ALLAH of the Kaaba CANNOT ENTER beyond the first heavens because his glory (which is said to be covered by a veil of light) would destroy the earth. "His veil is light. If He were to reveal Himself, the splendor of His countenance would consume His creation as far as the eye can see.” (Source: Sahih Muslim 179). How can Allah of the Qur’an be the God of the prophets when the prophets spoke to the God who came down to them in his GLORY? What further proof do you need that Allah can NOT be the true God true of Israel despite his claim to be? Allah is the best deceiver ( "ماكر" "maakir") QS 3:54. Allah's claim to be the true God of Israel is absolutely false and the biggest ever act of deception since the creation of the world. As a Australian muslim of Korean heritage, I can relate to Dr Yamamoto deeply but cause I was born in Korea and grew up in Australia, I understand sort of both sides perspective which can be very conflicting. I’ve been caught in 3 different distinct identities, one as a Muslim, one as a Australian and one as a Korean. Sometimes navigating those things can be very difficult and sometimes very isolating. It’s like being a minority within a minority. 😂

@@tikker250828 No one needs to leave their culture, as long as it doesn’t conflate with Islam. Japanese can dress like the locals and so can others from other countries like western ones as well. People are more willing to engage when they see people who look like them and are reverts. Look at Hamza from speakers corner as a prime example. English people are way more attracted to him as he dresses and speaks like them and it resonates with them. Japanese reverts should start a good Dawah organisation in Japan as the people there are also very receptive.
Having worked 30 years in Japan. I love Japan and Japanese. People are very mild and genuine. If they became Muslims, they will be the best Muslims in the world 🌎. Japanese are very proud of their culture and heritage. Only way to engage with them is first to know them and understand them and their view points. They have most unique perspective and are amazing listeners. Even when they say "Hai Hai" yes yes ...it doesn't mean they understand, they just say I hear you. Japan is definitely in-need of Islam but it must be approached in a very humble and sensitive way. They will only respond to good actions and examples rather than just words..just my feeling . I have a high respect of japanese traditions such as their punctuality, cleanliness, diciplin and all those good practises in life. An islamic teacher once told this about japanese people; " If only the japanese would take Islam into their lives, easily they will be the best muslim community on earth today. Because they already practise many of the social values as taught in Islam. They just in need of the faith. "

I think Muslims not respecting the concept of "Urf" is one of the main reasons Islam has not spread all the way to the world yet. urf means local custom and it is one of the secondary sources of Sharia. it basically means if there is a situation you find yourself in and Islam does not guide you directly, you basically do what the locals do. for example what architecture should you maintain when comes to building a mosque? what should an imam wear as fashion (as long as his maintains decency)? Muslims do not refer to local customs when it comes to answering these questions (in the west). you go to a mosque in South Korea, it has Persian architecture. a white person in Scotland converts to Islam, he has to wear a kamiz while taking shahada. converts have to have an Arabic names if you go to Japan and tell them- here is a religion which is true but you have to adopt a foreign architecture, give your children foreign names, wear a thobe instead of a Kimono. Tell me would a Japanese person (who are usually very proud of their culture) ever consider Islam as theirs? Islam also said if a people find something holy and it does not contradict Islam, it is as though it was sanctioned by Islam. Muslims today practice untouchability when it comes to non Muslim cultures. so not only making mosques in Japan in Turkish architecture not helpful but it also unIslamic.
thats Arabization you are talking about, thats the one thing that really makes it hard for Islam to spread. Most people on earth non islamic don't really like arab culture for themselves. Even Turks, Iranians and others try limit Arabization as much as possible. At the end of the day, Allah created everything and owns everything. When Dr. Yamamoto explained how East Asian cultures view nature as part of culture, rather than its opposite compared to the West (and much of the Middle East) I immediately realized why, despite growing up in a Muslim family and community, I found myself more spiritually connected to East Asian media and philosophy. The industrial world has separated us from nature and, as a result, has made us insecure in our spirituality, which sadly much of the Islamic world is suffering from.
So many things I admire about the Japanese. One particular aspect is cleanliness. It's like a religion for them. Though Islam emphasizes so much on cleanliness, the reality is embassing. The reality in many Muslim-majority countries are the opposite of "cleanliness is half of iman".
I am humbled by Dr. Yamamoto's brilliantly poised explanations, metaphors and analysis shared as a revert. The way he reflects Islamic intellectual spirituality through various aspects of cultures around the world, with a focus on underlining Japanese culture at the core and how it includes these elements is very classy. In my personal view, Islam is the glacial mountain river & it takes a local tinge as it flows over the different soils. So as it flowed to Turks, there was some Arabian & Persian colours added to the "Turkic" soils.🌈

Love the balance this brother brings to the table: one of the major issues of people from different backgrounds when we embrace Islam, is that we tend (or are pushed) to discard all our native culture and ways even when they are not in contradiction with Islam in any way. Being a Muslim do not mean you have to dress, eat or do other thing like if you were a Arab or a Pakistani or whomever else may have influence over you. Keep the positive aspects of your culture and discard the negative, while embracing Islam but not necessarily all the aspect, including the negative ones, of whichever islamicate culture you come in contact with.
What about the Japanese religion and culture? Their statues, folklore, traditions, and ethics? Instead of assimilation, here we have a man morbidly obsessed with islamisation of a secular nation. I believe that this will be an effective way to introduce Islam in Japan. Coming from Indonesia, I understand fully the benefits of acculturation in the development of Islam in my country. Back in the day, we only had Hindu and Buddhist culture in Java. The Muslim preachers (we call them 'Sunan') introduced Islam using acculturation, and it worked! They created Islamic lyrics for traditional songs, created Islamic stories for Wayang, and many more. I always remember my teacher saying that we can accept something easier if we have some sort of relationship with it. My hope is that the next generations will always be steadfast in practicing Islam.

Your opinion is amazing. Japanese traditional wood-architecture requires professional traditional-carpenters and a variety of Japanese woods. The Japanese cypress wood has a unique and wonderful scent. And that fills the room. I believe that preparing such a mosque is necessary for the deep friendly relationship between Japanese culture and Islamic culture.

I actually find the existence my own mind one of the best theological arguments for God's existence. How did your mind and my mind came to be? There are only two logically possible answers. 1) It is the result of blind and purposeless evolutionary process: 2) It is the result of some kind of guided and purposeful process (maybe also evolutionary, but the key difference here is if it is guided or not). Why do you trust the conclusions of your own mind? Why do you think yours or any others person rationality is trustworthy? Would you trust results given by a calculator assembled and programmed through some random process? I think our rationalities can only be trusted if 2) is true. Ultimately, you cannot really know anything for sure, apart from the fact that you are able to think. You cannot even be 100% sure that other people have conscious experiences like you do. But I find the following questions very helpful to evaluate a worldview framework. I found them in the book "Am I Just my Brain?" by a contemporary neuroscientist and theologian Sharon Dirkcx: 1) Is it self-contradictory? 2) Does it have explanatory power? 3) Can it be lived? It's the last question that I think is very relevant here. Can you really live like your mind is unreliable, like it has no capacity for knowing truth?

i always thought of how japanese traditional clothing also resembled the turkish traditional clothing of men and women, where it covers the bodylines and is more islam and not this typical western suit that only enhances certain parts , its also fascinating how japanese culture is more islamic such as "respecting nature, respecting people, respecting handcraft and architecture, talking less listening more" etc. and also "wabisabi" and "simplicity" whereas some arabic cultures nowadays when it comes to luxury items etc. derive a bit away from islamic values.
from what I've read, in Indonesia one way of spreading Islam is through wayang culture and in Japan there is a tradition called Rakugo, I think it can be a good way to introduce Islam
I totally understood why he was going on and on mentioning biryani 😂. I feel the same way about dawah in South africa. Our dawah institutions are often associated with charity work and these organisations often feed the local majority african population with biryani (a food most locals are not too familiar with and the food can sometimes be too spicy for them). We haven't gone out of our way to Africanise our dawah and link african culture with Islamic culture. Muslims in South africa are often associated with Indian and Arab culture instead of African culture. We basically force africans to assimilate to the dominant Indian culture when it doesn't have to be that way. Non-muslims should feel like islam is a natural way of life and not a new, foreign culture. I can definitely see similarities with dawah in SA and Japan. We need to understand the context properly without trying to bring a whole new culture. The basis of African traditional beliefs are really in line with Islamic beliefs and we somehow have to find a way to highlight that. So much potential but we are failing right now tbh.
No one needs to leave their culture, as long as it doesn’t conflate with Islam. Japanese can dress like the locals and so can others from other countries like western ones as well. People are more willing to engage when they see people who look like them and are reverts. Look at Hamza from speakers corner as a prime example. English people are way more attracted to him as he dresses and speaks like them and it resonates with them. Japanese reverts should start a good Dawah organisation in Japan as the people there are also very receptive.
you can't leave culture at all. it is supposed to develop via groups feeding itself with shared ideas and understanding. it became regressive when a person became chauvinistic towards their ways and block themselves from others. that is what islam prohibits.

It reminds me of how Islam came to Malay Archipelago, we still wear Malay costume, instead of 'Eid el-Fitr' we say 'Hari Raya', and many more cultural examples, we explain Islam using Malay context instead of foreign cultures.

I’m Japanese and some Japanese could accept Islam but it will always be a minority. We have so many traditional events connected to Shinto. Like “ Matsuri “. And new year we go to shrine passing through Tori Gate already violat the Islam. The rice wine and foods it self is deeply rooted in our culture.

why Islam hasn't developed in Japan because Islamic da'wah in Japan still uses cultural attributes that are foreign to Japanese people, such as Bangladeshi Indians preaching in Indian style, Indian culture, Indian-style communication. or sheikhs from Aran wearing Arabic clothes, arabic style. The history of Islamic propagation has always had some bridging elements of earlier threads e.g. Balkans has a Turkish tinge. It's not a zero sum game & culture is in flux e.g. English people in England were very insular & proud, but over the decades they have learnt to enjoy & imbibe "foreign" cultures i.e. #integration . Japanese Islam will probably end up being a mixture of different ingredients & proportions.
My people nubians always fought back arabs expansion into nubia now located in south egypt and north sudan region, my people were known for being warriors and good at arrow shooting, arabs used swords at that time so they couldn't advance into nubia, but we later converted to islam after some nubian traded with arabs and come back to nubia and preached islam to our elders who accepted islam and rest us followed our elders, now we lost our land to invaders and got arabized but not all some us kept our native languages and trying to survive. But dont be tricked some arabs did use islam as way to invade take over land from natives then force arabization same way christan missionaries used christianity. Nubians now happy to be muslims, but I dont think the arabization part was right.

One of the things that has really hurt our ummah is the idea that Islam and being Muslim is only truly acceptable when we adhere to Arab culture, so I really appreciate the conversation that Dr. Yamamoto is having of the importance of cultural identity and how Islam should help to beautify our cultures, not eliminate it. There's a hard push and even denigration of following our non-Arab cultural sensibilities, which turns off a lot of non-Arab Muslim and non-Muslim people, which they then oppose by going towards European standards ironically because European standards are spread under the guise of freedom, love and choice - and also cheaper and easily available.

what is muslim "culture" honestly? A pure submitter should not tie his/her connection to superficial identity other than in pursuit of understanding. the arabization/turkification/persianization/etc of islam has been associated with "authenticity" of islam which is invasive to unity and the essence of islam. Islam is not cultural or even traditional, if it was the case 2.8 billion muslims by now should worship three arab pagan dieties, we should remember that islam is the `content` not the `cover` , a kimono can be islamic , a persons name derived from hindu culture can be islamic , an incense as a cultural expression can be islamic. islam should be a container for multipolarity of knowledge and wisdom and an emulation of growth (development, evolution, involution, renovation, reform, innovation, revivalism, revolution, mutation, progress, diffusion, osmosis, borrowing, eclecticism, syncretism) where the inner seed blooms in congruent with humanities wellbeing and enlightenment. what we need is to return to God not tradition , tradition is static , islam is relevant and self-correcting. Traditionalism is a western woe in their nostalgia for them to salvage authenticity from their ignorance but only to find errors within errors. islam is a supra-imposed "big bang" from within. it is a stage of realization that elevates your awareness into submission.
I love how much love and knowledge he has towards his culture and he knows how to relate and change it to Islamic elements. I have always love Japanese culture and how they view beauty which actually relates a lot to Islamic fitrah if you ignore the Shinto related worship and thats how the Dr. is trying to spread Islam to the Japanese people. Not renouncing your culture completely but enriching it by renewing or reviving the concept of worship to Allah instead of deities. As a Muslim, let's be honest. Not every Muslims today adopt Islamic values as a part of their characters which is the first reason why the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was sent in the first place, “I have been sent to perfect good character.” Eventhough Islam calls for the submission to Allah as the only God, manners and characters truly embody what a Muslim is, hence Islam is the way of life. Thats why Dr. Yamamoto said we need to appeal to the non-Muslims especially Japanese through our manners and characters because from Japanese culture, there's not for them to learn from a lot of Muslim majority countries: dirty, rude, late, no dicipline, always preaching without even trying to improve ourselves and etc. Most Muslims are already so drowned in dunya that Muslim is only a name for them to use in order to belong to community. Islam is beautiful because it is balanced and moderate. People who calls other infidels and wahabi are making it hard for new reverts to think positively. Rasulallah used to be so understanding and gentle even when conveying messages and only firm or strict when needed. We should make our beloved Prophet as our role model in characters and study properly how Islam balances between cultures and religion. Saudi culture isnt superior to any other just because Islam spreads from there. What superior is Islam, not culture and a lot of teachings of Islam doesnt require you to follow exactly like in Saudi condition because of differences in culture and environment. "O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted." 49:13 QURAN
I feel like many of the Japanese values are inline with Islam already, like the clothing, communal sense of duty n responsibility, family values and gender roles etc. The loneliness aspect of the current Japanese society can be addressed very well by a community gathering in mosques several times a day and keeping tabs on the needs and worries of neighbors and combating that loneliness by sharing not just happy occasions but also sad occasions. I would like to live among a Japanese Muslim society, besides the core dogma, they have almost got the societal and communal goals intended through a muslim society except that 2-3 aspects like that of halal cuisine, non-naked Onsaans etc.

To add to this discussion, I like what was said by Shaykh Umar Faruq Abdullah in his talk titled Islam and the Cultural Imperative, regarding relationship between Islam and culture. He said, Islam is like a crystal clear river. But it takes on the color of the bedrock. If it flows over black rocks, it looks black. If it flows through jade, it looks green. Not trying to be hyper critical. Please use revert instead of convert. When my cousin asked me why did l convert to Islam from Catholicism. I relpied to the effect that l don't feel l converted, l feel that l have returned to the right path, hence revert. Because as we know we are all born as Muslims, it's just if you're born into a Christian family, your parents make you Christian, likewise if you're born into a Buddhist family, then your parents make you a Buddhist, etc.
Jazakallah khairan this is a good point. Just to add one thing. The hadith can be understood in two ways. By saying everyone is born a Muslim, what many scholars understood is they are born on fitrah, in the sense of they have within then the need for religiosity. This does not mean they were born a muslim, because you need guidance for this and guidance comes from the shariah. It’s a small issue and really just terminology and understanding but there is a different understanding. That’s why this group of scholars do not use the word ‘reversion’. Until you accept guidance, you are not a muslim.

Just the other day my brothers in-laws, who are Japanese came and visited us here in Canada. my wife Morrocan took the effort to make some Moroccan mint tea, and we used some Japanese leaf green tea that my sister-in-law had kicking around the house. Her 87-year-old uncle was so interested and really enjoyed the experience.

my late grandfather is Japanese from shinto and converted to Islam. He still practiced some Japanese traditional culture such as being very obedient to the elderly, polite to every people he met, letting the elderly eat 1st before he will eat , etc. I guess even in some cases, Japanese culture can be assimilated with Islam.

Thank you for bringing in Dr Yamamoto! As a Muslim who specialised in Japanese studies, has been living in Japan for several years and is lucky to actually have a job where I am constantly in discussion with Japanese people and study the Japanese market, I have a lot of things I want to say.
I am living in my day-to-day life the idea of making Japanese people comfortable for them to open up to you and listen to what you have to say. To have a certain attitude that is not too ''exotic'' for them is essential when engaging with Japanese people. And a lot of foreigners here fail to notice that. I think it's true with other cultures to some extent but it's super critical in a high-context culture like in Japan (same in Korea).
I also understand what he means by he wants Islam to grow slowly in Japan. Japanese are very very careful people and are usually suspicious of anything foreign (but not as true for the younger generation), so I don't see pushing dawah in Japan like how it's done in other countries having any positive effect. Especially when there is already a negative view of religion among the population (even if people are pretty spiritual). Islam needs to grow organically in a way that appeals to the Japanese high sensitivity.
It's also something that I noticed here, is that even if Japanese people don't appear religious, they are actually very spiritual, but not in the way organised religions define it. Statistics show that younger Japanese are actually more spiritual than older generations (which tend to be more materialistic), while we see an opposite trend in Korea. I'm very fascinated to see where this country is going in the future. I hope that Islam will have a more important place in Japan with Allah's permission.
But why don't you just practice religion in your own free time? Let the secular values of Japan stay put.

WW1 and WW2 both happened under secular states (not to mention the bloodiest centuries, the 19th and 20th centuries, which happened when secularism was adopted), so I wouldn't really say that people live in peace under it. I don’t know much about Japanese customs and culture. However, I can see that Dr. Yamamoto concept of crafting an Islamic Japanese culture to provide a sense of belonging does stem out of necessity. I feel he wants to convey that Islam already exists in aspects of Japanese culture, which is a very effective message.

I, as a Muslim, joined the merchant navy and in time, I was assigned to travel to Japan to take delivery of a brand new ship, called the MV Bora Universal, back in the mid seventees.
I flew over to Tokyo embarked on a long bus trip through the highways and byways of Japan to the harbour of Kobe.
The civility and mannerisms of the broad general populace of the Japanese is quite noticeable which impressed me the most. In fact their mode of living was very 'Islamic' to my youthful impressionable mind, as campared and practised by the local Muslims where I came from. Their work ethic was definitely more intensive and progressive compared to where I came from and I'm definitely not disparaging my community.
I'm nearing my seventees, and my respect for the Japanese culture is an indelible one.
Forever grateful to ALLAH for affording me that traveling experience. Alhamdulillah.

Great conversations! As a Kazakh Muslim, I can tell you that you can keep your culture and become a Muslim at the same time. Our ancestors were nomadic tribes who believed in Tengr which means God then Islam came to the Kazakh steppe and people except it easily because of the similarities. When Quran explains everything, it made a lot of sense and they knew it’s the truth, people understood their God better. About the culture, we are still the nomadic people till this day, because of the way of life and the culture surrounding it. We also feel the energy, the sprits of our ancestors and it’s not shirk. Allah forgives our ancestors that lived before the Islam, they will be judged according to their actions, there were a lot a good person that lived before the Islam. Killing the innocent, stealing, sex outside of the marriage, lie, gossip, these are some of the sins that everyone knows as common sense and many more things that a good person avoids. Regardless of their religion, if you avoid these things you will be judged accordingly. We all are the children of Adam, Allah is the most merciful and Allah knew all the best.

Something very similar about the 'tea ceremony' that i can relate to my Malay/Indonesian heritage is the practice of 'wayang kulit' when Islam was first introduced to the Southeast Asian islands back in the 14th century. Previously in the regions of Malaya, Sumatera and Java the predominant religion was Hindu and Buddhism. The early scholars and preachers slowly introduced islam through adapting the indigenous cultural norms of the region. One of it was the 'wayang kulit' or the shadow-puppets play, which was originally used to depict the legends of Hindu epics such as Ramayana and Mahabharata (some still exist in today's hindu majority Bali).
Sunan Kalijaga, one of the 9 Walis (scholars) was known to spread islam through these wayang kulits. The practice was modified and adapted to tell islamic stories and teachings. This is how islam was introduced and spread across the Javanese island. Today indonesia has the largest muslim population in the world.
I do believe that Islam is a way of life, culture is acceptable so long it does not conflict with the main principles of Islam. It would be interesting to see a Japanese Islamicate culture. Although in my opinion it should be left to develop organically and naturally over time.

I know our brothers have good intentions, but I find it sad that someone would tell a revert that they shouldn’t be wearing their cultural clothing. As long as it falls in line of our modest criteria it should be permissible no? By that logic it should be haram to wear a suit since that would fall under “infidel” clothing.

From the little I've studied regarding Japanese culture (studied the language for 2 years in college) and having visited Japan for business, I would think the Japanese would actually resonate a lot with Islam, considering its simple creed, and concepts like 'Ihsan' which seem to mirror Japanese virtues on pursuit of perfection.
Not to mention Islamic calligraphy culture, and historically even Islamic military arts from the Furussiyyah mirror heavily with Japanese Kyudo (Japanese Archery).
So this is interesting.
There needs to be Japanese muslims who are giving dawa back in Japan. They understand the culture and the similarities and would do a great job at conveying that to the population.

When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the Lord above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the Lord, saying, “He is good; his love endures forever.” (2 Chronicles 7:1-3).
His love? Yes, because-unlike the out of reach Kaaba god who 'sends down a stone from heaven' to Muslims-the true God of Israel, the Almighty, LOVES his people and himself comes down and dwells with them! Whom do you choose?
However, OPPOSITE to what Moses and all the Prophets of Israel knew about the true God of Abraham entering creation, ALLAH of the Kaaba CANNOT ENTER beyond the first heavens because his glory (which is said to be covered by a veil of light) would destroy the earth. "His veil is light. If He were to reveal Himself, the splendor of His countenance would consume His creation as far as the eye can see.” (Source: Sahih Muslim 179).

As a Australian muslim of Korean heritage, I can relate to Dr Yamamoto deeply but cause I was born in Korea and grew up in Australia, I understand sort of both sides perspective which can be very conflicting. I’ve been caught in 3 different distinct identities, one as a Muslim, one as a Australian and one as a Korean. Sometimes navigating those things can be very difficult and sometimes very isolating. It’s like being a minority within a minority. 😂

@@tikker250828 No one needs to leave their culture, as long as it doesn’t conflate with Islam. Japanese can dress like the locals and so can others from other countries like western ones as well. People are more willing to engage when they see people who look like them and are reverts. Look at Hamza from speakers corner as a prime example. English people are way more attracted to him as he dresses and speaks like them and it resonates with them. Japanese reverts should start a good Dawah organisation in Japan as the people there are also very receptive.

Having worked 30 years in Japan. I love Japan and Japanese. People are very mild and genuine. If they became Muslims, they will be the best Muslims in the world 🌎. Japanese are very proud of their culture and heritage. Only way to engage with them is first to know them and understand them and their view points. They have most unique perspective and are amazing listeners. Even when they say "Hai Hai" yes yes ...it doesn't mean they understand, they just say I hear you. Japan is definitely in-need of Islam but it must be approached in a very humble and sensitive way. They will only respond to good actions and examples rather than just words..just my feeling . I think Muslims not respecting the concept of "Urf" is one of the main reasons Islam has not spread all the way to the world yet.
urf means local custom and it is one of the secondary sources of Sharia. it basically means if there is a situation you find yourself in and Islam does not guide you directly, you basically do what the locals do. for example what architecture should you maintain when comes to building a mosque? what should an imam wear as fashion (as long as his maintains decency)?
Muslims do not refer to local customs when it comes to answering these questions (in the west).

When Dr. Yamamoto explained how East Asian cultures view nature as part of culture, rather than its opposite compared to the West (and much of the Middle East) I immediately realized why, despite growing up in a Muslim family and community, I found myself more spiritually connected to East Asian media and philosophy. The industrial world has separated us from nature and, as a result, has made us insecure in our spirituality, which sadly much of the Islamic world is suffering from.

So many things I admire about the Japanese. One particular aspect is cleanliness. It's like a religion for them. Though Islam emphasizes so much on cleanliness, the reality is embassing. The reality in many Muslim-majority countries are the opposite of "cleanliness is half of iman".

In my personal view, Islam is the glacial mountain river & it takes a local tinge as it flows over the different soils.

Love the balance this brother brings to the table: one of the major issues of people from different backgrounds when we embrace Islam, is that we tend (or are pushed) to discard all our native culture and ways even when they are not in contradiction with Islam in any way. Being a Muslim do not mean you have to dress, eat or do other thing like if you were a Arab or a Pakistani or whomever else may have influence over you. Keep the positive aspects of your culture and discard the negative, while embracing Islam but not necessarily all the aspect, including the negative ones, of whichever islamicate culture you come in contact with.
What about the Japanese religion and culture? Their statues, folklore, traditions, and ethics? Instead of assimilation, here we have a man morbidly obsessed with islamisation of a secular nation. It would be horrible to even think about it : Japan has given the world the world so much interns of art and culture. I believe that this will be an effective way to introduce Islam in Japan. Coming from Indonesia, I understand fully the benefits of acculturation in the development of Islam in my country. Back in the day, we only had Hindu and Buddhist culture in Java. The Muslim preachers (we call them 'Sunan') introduced Islam using acculturation, and it worked! They created Islamic lyrics for traditional songs, created Islamic stories for Wayang, and many more. I always remember my teacher saying that we can accept something easier if we have some sort of relationship with it. My hope is that the next generations will always be steadfast in practicing Islam.
But why do u want that in Japan? Why not just let their culture be separate from Islam. Islamisatiom of the non Muslim world will be...boring

Your opinion is amazing. Japanese traditional wood-architecture requires professional traditional-carpenters and a variety of Japanese woods. The Japanese cypress wood has a unique and wonderful scent. And that fills the room. I believe that preparing such a mosque is necessary for the deep friendly relationship between Japanese culture and Islamic culture.

I actually find the existence my own mind one of the best theological arguments for God's existence. How did your mind and my mind came to be? There are only two logically possible answers. 1) It is the result of blind and purposeless evolutionary process: 2) It is the result of some kind of guided and purposeful process (maybe also evolutionary, but the key difference here is if it is guided or not). Why do you trust the conclusions of your own mind? Why do you think yours or any others person rationality is trustworthy? Would you trust results given by a calculator assembled and programmed through some random process? I think our rationalities can only be trusted if 2) is true.
Ultimately, you cannot really know anything for sure, apart from the fact that you are able to think. You cannot even be 100% sure that other people have conscious experiences like you do. But I find the following questions very helpful to evaluate a worldview framework. I found them in the book "Am I Just my Brain?" by a contemporary neuroscientist and theologian Sharon Dirkcx:
1) Is it self-contradictory?
2) Does it have explanatory power?
3) Can it be lived?
It's the last question that I think is very relevant here. Can you really live like your mind is unreliable, like it has no capacity for knowing truth?
I really respect japanese culture, whoever you need to study how monotheism free people lives from being enslaved in this materialist society and worshipping their own desires to have only one true God.

i always thought of how japanese traditional clothing also resembled the turkish traditional clothing of men and women, where it covers the bodylines and is more islam and not this typical western suit that only enhances certain parts , its also fascinating how japanese culture is more islamic such as "respecting nature, respecting people, respecting handcraft and architecture, talking less listening more" etc. and also "wabisabi" and "simplicity" whereas some arabic cultures nowadays when it comes to luxury items etc. derive a bit away from islamic values.

This was really interesting.
I totally understood why he was going on and on mentioning biryani 😂. I feel the same way about dawah in South africa. Our dawah institutions are often associated with charity work and these organisations often feed the local majority african population with biryani (a food most locals are not too familiar with and the food can sometimes be too spicy for them). We haven't gone out of our way to Africanise our dawah and link african culture with Islamic culture. Muslims in South africa are often associated with Indian and Arab culture instead of African culture. We basically force africans to assimilate to the dominant Indian culture when it doesn't have to be that way. Non-muslims should feel like islam is a natural way of life and not a new, foreign culture. I can definitely see similarities with dawah in SA and Japan. We need to understand the context properly without trying to bring a whole new culture. The basis of African traditional beliefs are really in line with Islamic beliefs and we somehow have to find a way to highlight that. So much potential but we are failing right now tbh.

you can't leave culture at all. it is supposed to develop via groups feeding itself with shared ideas and understanding. it became regressive when a person became chauvinistic towards their ways and block themselves from others. that is what islam prohibits.

It reminds me of how Islam came to Malay Archipelago, we still wear Malay costume, instead of 'Eid el-Fitr' we say 'Hari Raya', and many more cultural examples, we explain Islam using Malay context instead of foreign cultures.

why Islam hasn't developed in Japan because Islamic da'wah in Japan still uses cultural attributes that are foreign to Japanese people, such as Bangladeshi Indians preaching in Indian style, Indian culture, Indian-style communication. or sheikhs from Aran wearing Arabic clothes, arabic style. The history of Islamic propagation has always had some bridging elements of earlier threads e.g. Balkans has a Turkish tinge. It's not a zero sum game & culture is in flux e.g. English people in England were very insular & proud, but over the decades they have learnt to enjoy & imbibe "foreign" cultures i.e. #integration .
Japanese Islam will probably end up being a mixture of different ingredients & proportions.
My people nubians always fought back arabs expansion into nubia now located in south egypt and north sudan region, my people were known for being warriors and good at arrow shooting, arabs used swords at that time so they couldn't advance into nubia, but we later converted to islam after some nubian traded with arabs and come back to nubia and preached islam to our elders who accepted islam and rest us followed our elders, now we lost our land to invaders and got arabized but not all some us kept our native languages and trying to survive. But dont be tricked some arabs did use islam as way to invade take over land from natives then force arabization same way christan missionaries used christianity.
Nubians now happy to be muslims, but I dont think the arabization part was right.

One of the things that has really hurt our ummah is the idea that Islam and being Muslim is only truly acceptable when we adhere to Arab culture, so I really appreciate the conversation that Dr. Yamamoto is having of the importance of cultural identity and how Islam should help to beautify our cultures, not eliminate it. There's a hard push and even denigration of following our non-Arab cultural sensibilities, which turns off a lot of non-Arab Muslim and non-Muslim people, which they then oppose by going towards European standards ironically because European standards are spread under the guise of freedom, love and choice - and also cheaper and easily available.
Learn Arabic to understand the Deen more and take positives from culture without turning into a cheap copy or copy cat of the recent Arab trends especially and trampling on your heritage

I wonder who are precisly obsessed with turning everything Arab, if you go to Afghanistan Muslims there are not obsessed with Arabness, same goes for Indonesia, Malaysia etc. The question is then who are the ones who introduced this thought? And who are precisly the Arabs, in Iraq and in Saudi they don't have the same cultural practices. what is muslim "culture" honestly? A pure submitter should not tie his/her connection to superficial identity other than in pursuit of understanding. the arabization/turkification/persianization/etc of islam has been associated with "authenticity" of islam which is invasive to unity and the essence of islam.

I love how much love and knowledge he has towards his culture and he knows how to relate and change it to Islamic elements. I have always love Japanese culture and how they view beauty which actually relates a lot to Islamic fitrah if you ignore the Shinto related worship and thats how the Dr. is trying to spread Islam to the Japanese people. Not renouncing your culture completely but enriching it by renewing or reviving the concept of worship to Allah instead of deities.
As a Muslim, let's be honest. Not every Muslims today adopt Islamic values as a part of their characters which is the first reason why the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was sent in the first place, “I have been sent to perfect good character.” Eventhough Islam calls for the submission to Allah as the only God, manners and characters truly embody what a Muslim is, hence Islam is the way of life. Thats why Dr. Yamamoto said we need to appeal to the non-Muslims especially Japanese through our manners and characters because from Japanese culture, there's not for them to learn from a lot of Muslim majority countries: dirty, rude, late, no dicipline, always preaching without even trying to improve ourselves and etc. Most Muslims are already so drowned in dunya that Muslim is only a name for them to use in order to belong to community. Islam is beautiful because it is balanced and moderate. People who calls other infidels and wahabi are making it hard for new reverts to think positively. Rasulallah used to be so understanding and gentle even when conveying messages and only firm or strict when needed. We should make our beloved Prophet as our role model in characters and study properly how Islam balances between cultures and religion. Saudi culture isnt superior to any other just because Islam spreads from there. What superior is Islam, not culture and a lot of teachings of Islam doesnt require you to follow exactly like in Saudi condition because of differences in culture and environment.

I feel like many of the Japanese values are inline with Islam already, like the clothing, communal sense of duty n responsibility, family values and gender roles etc.
The loneliness aspect of the current Japanese society can be addressed very well by a community gathering in mosques several times a day and keeping tabs on the needs and worries of neighbors and combating that loneliness by sharing not just happy occasions but also sad occasions.
I would like to live among a Japanese Muslim society, besides the core dogma, they have almost got the societal and communal goals intended through a muslim society except that 2-3 aspects like that of halal cuisine, non-naked Onsaans etc.
What about the Japanese religion and culture? Their statues, folklore, traditions, and ethics? Instead of assimilation, here we have a man morbidly obsessed with islamisation of a secular nation. It would be horrible to even think about it : Japan has given the world the world so much interns of art and culture. To discredit and discontinue it because it doesn't sir well with Islamic stereotypes is absolutely deplorable. Stop trying to ugly morph everything. The shift would be horrible- beards everywhere, call to prayers in a once peaceful city, burqa clad ladies, destruction of temples and shrines...and yes, no anime, manga or music.
Leave our secular states alone, please.
To add to this discussion, I like what was said by Shaykh Umar Faruq Abdullah in his talk titled Islam and the Cultural Imperative, regarding relationship between Islam and culture. He said, Islam is like a crystal clear river. But it takes on the color of the bedrock. If it flows over black rocks, it looks black. If it flows through jade, it looks green. If it flows over sand it looks sandy. Islam in China looks Chinese, Islam in Nusantara looks Malay, Islam in Africa looks African. Wherever it goes it takes on local colors. but the water remains clear, the water remains life-giving.

Not trying to be hyper critical. Please use revert instead of convert. When my cousin asked me why did l convert to Islam from Catholicism. I relpied to the effect that l don't feel l converted, l feel that l have returned to the right path, hence revert. Because as we know we are all born as Muslims, it's just if you're born into a Christian family, your parents make you Christian, likewise if you're born into a Buddhist family, then your parents make you a Buddhist, etc.
Jazakallah khairan this is a good point. Just to add one thing. The hadith can be understood in two ways. By saying everyone is born a Muslim, what many scholars understood is they are born on fitrah, in the sense of they have within then the need for religiosity. This does not mean they were born a muslim, because you need guidance for this and guidance comes from the shariah. It’s a small issue and really just terminology and understanding but there is a different understanding. That’s why this group of scholars do not use the word ‘reversion’. Until you accept guidance, you are not a muslim.
God created man for eternal life. But when Adam ate of the tree, he/ mankind got separated from the Source of Life , which brought into creation,sin suffering death and eternal separation, the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good/ evil. The wages of sin is death and nothing we do can return life back into us. That’s why Life Himself Jesus Christ veiled His Divinity in flesh to come as a man , not from mortal Adam of sin nature, to take OUR death upon Himself, destroy its power by His resurrection, to make us a new creation, born of The Spirit for righteousness unto eternal life.
In short, without His Life Giving Spirit indwelling us , we have no eternal life

islam can be assimilated well with japan culture, islam also assimilated well in indonesia, if someone concerned that islam will remove the culture worry not, you can make a mosque with japanese architecture just without the statue and stuff, you can keep your name no need to change it to arabic unless you want to ofc. and islam does'nt have a culture, but most muslim prefer to do some arabic culture because they wanted too. the point is islam doesnt change culture, as long as the culture dont make you worship other than allah and do something that allah forbide it's fine

Just the other day my brothers in-laws, who are Japanese came and visited us here in Canada. my wife Morrocan took the effort to make some Moroccan mint tea, and we used some Japanese leaf green tea that my sister-in-law had kicking around the house. Her 87-year-old uncle was so interested and really enjoyed the experience.
