Here I am in Arizona with my grandson I picked up for the summer from Mississippi. He just finished kindergarten. I asked him about his first year of school of his whole life. He reports the kids are all good, no bullies. I ask, “So what were your classmates? Were they all white, mostly black, Asian, or what?” His answer, “I don’t know Grandpa. I didn’t notice because that’s not important.” (He’s half Filipino and the other half is mixed race. I’m pretty sure in rural Mississippi he was the only kid with Chinese looking eyes and Asian skin. The fact that he and every kid in his class paid no attention to the color of skin, informs me that we, the grown-up world are the source of the problem. Kids won’t pay attention to superficial differences unless taught to.)
My youngest daughter's mother is black and white. My oldest daughter is all the way black. Being around a diverse family especially with my oldest seeing and being around the Caucasian persuasion has opened her eyes. That victim bullshit, just because you're black and you've done the same thing MFS have been doing for decades, doesn't mean it's overly pumped up because you're black. They are tell you that you're stupid. We all have the same problems and obstacles to overcome. Get off yo ass and put in the work.
That's wonderful. Really. But I do have to wonder why one would ask about that? I have never asked about what my kids schoolmates looked like in any way. Not even kids who bullied them. Now that he's been made aware that people ask questions about skin color, I wonder what information he will latch onto to satisfy his curiosity. Or maybe he'll ask someone. I wonder what they'll assume about why he's asking, and how their answer will contextualize in his head? I wonder how these things shape our world view, and wonder how that would differ from someone who never had the idea of color introduced to them at all until they were old and developed enough to critically think about things and figure it out on their own. /Musings

I actually work in a lace that is predominantly hispanic, its like 80% hispanic then like 12% white and 8% black, I'm leaving out other races because I have not seen another race besides those mentioned in my workplace. Having said that, age wise my peers are hispanic and black, all the other white people are either much younger or much older. It took a long time for me to be accepted as "one of them" and whenever a new person came in my friends could be heard telling them "Oh, her? She's cool, don't worry about her", which was necessary as I can't say how many times I was left out because I was the white girl. My best friend is hispanic (not from my workplace), her daughter dated a black man and was rejected by the rest of her family. She called me up and went on and on about how prejudice is alive and well in the US and it wasn't from white people.

Was that black man being racist towards the white man, or was just being a jerk?
