- On top of a Mountain in the winter Arctic North of Finland, I saw some of the strangest and visually stunning Northern light displays I’ve ever seen. This winter I have been overlanding in Norway, Sweden and Finland in my self-built camper transit van. Nordic Arctic in its wild frigid temperatures, only kept warm by my Chinese diesel heater. Deep snow and frozen vans do make this place Amazing to travel in. In this episode, you find me in Kaunispää Fell, Saariselkä, Finland

You probably could use it as a emergency landing strip. If it was the same road I drove down a few years ago there is double lanes on both sides. We were in Saariselka staying during the winter. We definitely had some -38 while we were there. The year prior I was in Oulu visiting family and it was -40. Everyone should experience it once. It was quite cold for this California boy but I would do it again in a heart beat.
Not to crazy :-) We enjoy this al vinter long (November-April) here in Scandinavia ;-)

As for the gearbox, it very much seems moisture seeped down one of the gear selector cables and then froze
That straight flat part of road really can be used as a runway. There are few of those around Finland. For emergencies yes, but mostly just in case certain neighbour of us gets some ideas again...

There is an Argentine boy who lives in Lapland all the time in a camper van and has overcome temperatures of -40C. It is interesting since he tours Lapland in winter and Finnmark in summer. I have never seen that it is possible to live this way.
-40c was my goal for the winter but I wasn’t able to find it last year. Only down to -31c.

Your channel and adventures have been the inspiration to sort my van out for an actual winter trip. This video has me wondering what was in that red bull I just drank. 🤣 Stunning views of the Auroras both with and without the ambient light. No suggestion on a snow toy, but am certainly interested in what you come up with. 🫡🚚
I find the winter trips are the most rewarding, due to the challenges involved.

You can buy a flexi exhaust hose to redirect it. Then you ca aim it at the frozen part of the van to melt. Just attach using a quick hose clamp to the rear pipe

I think your self installed pre heater is perhaps one of your best decisions on your van, of course I do not know all other ins and outs but Yeti performs exceptionally well considering it isn’t made for the arctic regions I suppose. Think it’s a lot off modification but I wonder if you have enough height in Yeti laying a thicker “kingspan” floor so you could route pathways for pet tubes to install a glycol filled hydronic floor heating system? As for the frozen gear shift levers, I had to think about the times I worked at KLM aircraft maintenance, it may sound to much to bother but it is relatively easy to install a de icing system again with glycol with perforated small diameter tubes just spraying it on parts needed to be de-iced with a secondary windscreen wiper pump. Ah well it is just fun just brainstorming your van Alex :-) regardless I hope next winter we can follow a new adventure Alex!! Cheers, Albert
The engine preheater is one of my favourite things I added to the van!
As for height it’s a tall van inside and I’m 6’2” so I think could of done 50mm in the floor and done still be fine. Currently just 25mm
Superb video Alex, though a bit weird watching while I’m sat melting in this late evening UK heatwave. What I’d give right now to dive into some of that snow. 😂 And did that passport ever turn up?

Saariselkä has many km of fatbike trails, they keep them open trough winter. Highly recomend
I’ve got a fat e-bike to take up next winter! I can’t wait!
And from Neste you can rent snowmobile, but its only legal to drive the "highways" AKA snowmobile tracks. Much more fun will be if you get guide and go to deep snow. Almost every year some turist will end their life with snowmobile in Lappi
@@MispronouncedAdventures i think most of trails leave from Kiilopää, next to saariselkä. I have done there mostly summer biking, only once on winter. Maybe when i get my van ready
That went for a guided snowmobile trip last winter and loved it. I would love to be able to explore more of the winter on an e-bike or similar.
It is a shame but I’m not surprised there are accidents with tourists every year. snow mobiles are a lot of fun but new riders like tourists may not realise they are also very powerful and heavy piece of equipment.

Just in the process of binge watching this series after watching the first winter trip and loving the videos.
Something to note for the future (although hopefully never needed), I believe it is possible to have a new passport posted to the embasy of the country you are staying in. My partner (norwegian now living in the UK) had to get her replacement passport posted to the UK when she lost hers during covid and was unable to travel home to get a replacement. We then had to travel to the Norwegian Embasy in London to collect which although cost us the drive from Newcastle and overnight stay didnt cost much more in regards to a normal passport replacement. I am not certin if this is something we can do for a british passport though.

behind-the-scenes regarding the passport. I actually tried to have this happen to fast track a new one from the UK to the British Embassy in Norway. However they told me it wasn’t possible after contacting the embassy. In the end, I had to go to the Norwegian British embassy which is in Oslo around 1300 mile drive from where I lost the passport to begin with to get an Emergency passport.
Here in Southern England I struggle to get my doors open when below zero. Hate to imagine the fun I'd have in those temperatures
The cold is far nicer in the Arctic it’s dry and unlike English cold which is wet

One tip that I use when I shoot in really cold temperatures is that I just toss the equipment in a bag that I've had outside the vehicle. Close it up and bring it in. Then there's no way that the camera gets internal condensation.
I haven’t found it an issue in the extreme cold as it’s an extremely dry environment both inside and outside the van and I have more issues in in the UK winter or high humidity when I’m working in hot jungles

Been north and south. South I was in Chennai and then took clients over to the opposite coast
Great I saw your video up again, what do you use to keep cab warm at night I have the German 4 inch screens and a thermal cab divider that I can open, I have a Peugeot boxer so what also is the thermal screen covering your radiator out side and where from please.?
I don’t need to keep the cab warm overnight, as I have insulated sliding bulkhead door, which separates off the habitation and the cab. It will be +21c in the back and -20c in the cab In the morning. I just turned the engine pre heater on and heating the engine and then cab heater in the morning to warm it up for driving.
Grille cover is home made from windscreen installation material. Anything can be used

Hi Alex- just watched this video- i,m very interested in the unit you have on your dash that tells you the coolant temp- but i noticed it did other things as well- i had a look thro your previous video's and cant see any reference to it - could you do a review or a talk thro about this device? 🤞🧐
It’s a KW206. It can output any data the OBD2 port puts out. I talk about it a bit in the first video of this series

And obviously I shut the vents in can .
I normal keep the max fan on 10% to keep the air moving a small amount

I think as this point I’ve seen most of Santas reindeer and the man himself! Aliens not yet but it’s definitely looked like it with the colours
You seem to think that you can't drive snowmobile legally in the Nordics? Not sure why. You do have at least cat. B (max. 3500 kg vehicle) UK driving license, maybe even higher class. This gives you legal right to drive snowmobile. In Finland at least cat. B includes cat. T (as in tractor) which is the lowest rung needed for snowmobile, when outside private properties. So if you have cat. B or higher driving license, like you have, you can drive snowmobile on the official snowmobile tracks, cross the B-roads, in special cases drive on the car road etc. where the cat. T and the age 15+ is the minimum requirement.
As far I understand for the uk B license regarding snowmobile use that was only allowed for us in guided group circumstances, not general use
