Alot of Sonic CD’s ost feels like just an expression of freedom from the sound limitations of old game hardware- and this song is a prime example. It’s absolutely bursting with energy and joy- literal cheers accentuating the main bit- it’s pure celebration condensed into music. As for the stage itself- it’s pretty good! Sonic CD pushes exploration pretty hard and Palmtree Panic is a great introduction to that style. I’m not sure if I’d put it over Green Hill, but it’s definitely better than Emerald Hill- all in all a fantastic opening act.
i know this is more of because storage limitation rather than an intentional thing, but the past themes actually uses the original megadrive's soundchip instead of CD audio, which ties back to the whole "past and future" theme of sonic CD
Sonic has the most consistent best first level themes in game history. Be it Green Hill Zone, be it Angel Island Zone, be it Palmtree Panic... Be it Azure Blue World, be it City Escape, be it Leaf Forest... Be it Misty Lake, be it Windmill Isle, be it Windy Hill... Amazing introductory songs.
@@july7498 i listened to some before guess i didnt listen to all of them but yeah i really really like all of these except misty lake but leaf forest is ok i think
So glad these uploads of the OST exist, and in high quality too. The most popular uploads of Sonic CD's Japanese soundtrack got deleted and I was pretty bummed. Thank you!
IIRC the beginning portion heard here is one of various PCM loops that went unused in the original release of the game (I believe they're still accessible from one of the prototypes up on Hidden Palace).
@Marcus _ The 2011 remake does not play the extended intro. The "intro" itself is an unused PCM loop that was only found in the files of the beta version.
The "intro" as I keep seeing in YT uploads for these tracks aren't intros. They're loops that were meant to play at the end of a track while the music was rewinding to play again so as not to have a moment of silence while it does so. This feature went unused, along with the loops for it. The 2011 version adds these loops back in as part of the tracks themselves even though the looping feature isn't necessary with modern hardware. Some of the loops still don't get used, but it's a nice addition for the remake. TLDR: These are loops for the end of the tracks, not the intro.
Palmtree Panic is a subtropical region[1] with sharp mountains, scattered waterfalls in the background, a clear blue sky[1] with white clouds, and fields covered in green grass. The soil is orange and brown and displays a triangular pattern. Palm trees with pink berries adorn the region, as well as star-shaped green plants that seem to litter the tropical coast. Sometimes, tree trunks with holes in them also appear on the highest mountain tops.
@@enderthehedgehog473 I was going to call u daft for saying that but now that I think about it, as a track it is quiet underrated in the sonic community. I don't see many people giving it the amount of praise it deserves as the masterpiece it is. Its literally right up there with green hill as an amazing first level theme. 100/10 for sure.
Man, This really gives a vibe of how Sega devs felt at the time, It just feels far more naturally upbeat than any of their themes since, it just pops with "everything is great!", in a way that nothing really has since. Love Sega, And love this music 💜
Idk why they decided to have different soundtracks for different regions, and I hate comparing them because both are good, but come on. This is so much more vibrant and energetic compared to the us version(at least this track, I need to listen to the rest of em')
The US is more about atmosphere whereas the JP version focuses on Sonic's perspective. A good example of this is Metallic Madness "B" Mix in both soundtracks. In JP, Sonic's thinking about how Eggman's laughing at him for messing up and it's too late to change that. In US, the vibe is that while you may have lost the war to save Little Planet, you can still win the next battle against Dr. Eggman.
Yes, sure. For such an old game from 1993, there is music that sounds like the music of new games (2010-20××) Palmtree Panic's music is one of the best in Sonic CD. now let's sing together.... WOOO, YAAAAAY
sonic music is so good, especially the early music cuz a casual listener can love it and feel the atmosphere that the game creates, and a music theorist can dissect it and look for interesting bits, like how this song changes tempo and even the dissonant parts like the “yeah” intro sound bright in the context of the song
This shows how everything is peaceful and everyone is joyful until you get bad future where the song isn't happy and everything is robotic because Eggman took over the world but if you manage to save the future everything will be even more joyful and everyone celebrating sonic cd really knows what's up
Palmtree Panic: Past: a prehistoric jungle Present: a jungle where parties abound Good Future: the inhabitants celebrate that the future has been saved. Bad Future: a jungle that has been polluted
After listening to the Bad Future version like 5 times in a row, GOD the two go together SO WELL!!!!! This version is like “Alright Sonic, we have hope you’ll help us out!” And the bad future version is like “You failed us, but there’s still hope”. I love how the bad future version uses the little bits from this version (the cheers, the piano, the melodies, etc) that make it the Palmtree Panic theme, but twist them in a sinister way to REALLY drill in the fact that this zone was taken over by an evil force. This theme sounds bright, peppy and fun, cheering Sonic on while you go through the level, no sweat, but the bad future version REALLY tries to up the stakes. It’s chaotic, fast, sinister and corrupted. Like “have fun in this zone, it’s the first level of a sonic game, easy as pie!” As opposed to “you failed, but you can still save us! You better do it quick though!” Genius tracks, always a fun listen.
This song was released in 2008, sonic cd was released in 1993. But if you meant this song got inspiration off of palm tree panic then yeah, it does sound familiar.
