  • You are viewing the pull rod fire alarm being activated at Firestone Elementary School in Akron, Ohio. Instead of using horns, this system was wired to 10" Autocall single stroke bells. The code is 4-4-4-4 cadence march time which is all automated by the Autocall fire alarm control panel.

    I recently had the opportunity to tour this school to historically document it. What a beautiful gem this building is inside and out. The front facade, the auditorium, and the main entrance hallway took my breathe away. The library also had a home-ec room with a fireplace which was very interesting too. So much character and beauty this place has. After over 100 years of learning; the building is in amazing condition and they do a great job up keeping the building. All those century old hardwood floors are still in great shape as well, and I made sure to compliment the custodian for his great work. I heard that they might close this school next year. If they do end up closing it, I hope they can find a new use for it. This place needs to be preserved for future generations because losing it would be a huge loss to Akron’s history, and an architectural loss because this place is truly a work of art, and you’ll never see a building like this again. These new schools will not last half as long as the old ones have, and these new schools will have zero architectural legacy as they lack any sort of character.

    I was looking through some stuff about Akron, Ohio... Looks like they had a lot of old cool school buildings and most have been torn down. Does the city of Akron not have any money to keep them up or are they very forward moving and want to replace buildings as soon as they turn 50+?
    BTW, there's a beautiful old school in South Portland, ME called Mahoney Middle School. It was built in the 1920s and has been kept up so well it looks brand new. Never been inside but I heard it looks good inside and out.

      Update: I did a bit of digging and they held a vote in 2011 to close that school indefinitely, and it was voted down after determining that consolidating it with the newer, larger school on the far side of the city would have been detrimental to the students, leading to oversized classes and crowding.. including needing twelve (yes twelve) portables.

      Official NewAgeServerAlarm well that school is going to be closed down. I did some research and the two South Portland Maine middle schools (Mahoney and Memorial) are going to close and become a new combined school built behind Memorial. IDK what’s going to happen to the two old buildings.

    My middle school had the coded pull stations with the same single stroke bell. Except the bells rang with the 1-1-3 coding every 5 seconds. I dont know how many times it did that since every time it went off it was due to a fire drill and that system couldnt be heard from outside. Now days that school has the EST Genesis speaker strobes with the modern box like pull stations with the wiring in plastic tubing to the pull stations and to the fire alarm speakers. And I did see one abandoned fire bell in the cafeteria. And the Baltimore City police academy has all of its original fire bells still mounted in the walls but they are all abandoned and the building now has the Simplex Tru Alert speaker strobes.

If they get rid of the 10" manual trip bells, 10" Autocall single stroke bells & the panel, I'm gonna try to get them & preserve them, If that happens, I want at least the panel, 6 of the 10" Autocall single stroke bells, the one in the auditorium, the ones on the basement floor, the one from the gym/cafeteria, the one in the library, & the one of the single stroke bells on the 1st floor & the Trip Bell from the basement

    • @OldSchoolFireAlarms

      No not really. However, this is in violation of fire codes. The fire code in most states says that the signaling devices must be the same and consistent sounding throughout the entire building. You should never have horns and bells going off at the same time. It can be very confusing which one is meant for fires, tornados, class change bell, etc.

  • @timfischer
    @timfischer 3 года назад +1

    Was the idea behind the 4/4 cadence that you were supposed to march out at that tempo? That seems a little slow for an evacuation, but better than panicking I guess.
    My elementary school (late 70s/early 80s, built in the 40s) had horns, fire alarm with a constant blast, and tornado was the same horns in an on/off pattern, constant, but maybe half the speed of the 4/4 pattern here and with no break in it.

    • @OldSchoolFireAlarms
      @OldSchoolFireAlarms  3 года назад +3

      The 4-4-4-4 Cadence Marching Code was designed to do just that. Have those in the building march out in a quiet, smooth and orderly manner. Back in the day, fire drills were to be taken very seriously, unlike what you see today.

    It seems like different states have different fire code regulations. To me it seems like Maryland has fire code regulations preventing these type of fire alarm systems from still being used inside of buildings. I know schools that opened in the days of these kind of alarms in Maryland now days have modern fire alarm systems with the strobe lights. I know Mervo in Baltimore City appears to be from those days and now days has Simplex True Alert horn strobes with the T bar pull stations and the Baltimore City Police Academy has Simplex True Alert speaker strobes with the T bar pull stations. And Baltimore County alot of schools from the early 60s and before were retrofitted with more modern fire alarm systems. I know Potapsco High and Perry Hall high which opened in the early 60s now have the EST Integrity horn strobes. My Middle School Dumbarton now has EST Genesis speaker strobes. Then my first elementary school which opened in 77 now has EST Genesis. Not sure if they are horn strobes or chime strobes. Wouldnt surprise me if it were Chime Strobes as that building has 3 Integrity horn strobes on the exterior of the building and that building originally had Single stroke bells in march time with red fire alarm lights that light up for each bell ring. And one high school I know of in Baltimore County from the early 70s still has bells but strobes retrofitted. Then our human resources main buildings original part which opened in 72 came with Wheelock vibrating bells and was retrofitted with the Wheelock strobe plates around the bells in the early 90s when the addition was added on. And the addition has the Wheelock horn strobes.

      The Autocall control panels originally were built for 115 volts (circa 1950's) but they can handle 120. The bells and horns are 2.5 amps. The resistors on the panel are 100 watts and the ohms vary depending on how many bells/horns are wired to the panel. The more bells/horns you have wired to the panel, the less ohms you would need. One thing I just thought about. Were these alarms silent from the outside or can they be heard from outside of the building? I know now days newer fire alarm systems have to be audible from outside of the building as well as from the inside. From my 4 schools I attended. My first Elementary school had the single stroke bells in march time with red fire lights that lit up at each ring. With single stroke bells on the exterior of the building. My second Elementary school with the electro mechanical horns were silent from the outside. My middle school with the 1-1-3 single stroke bell sound was also silent from outside but my high school which renovated and has the EST Integrity horn strobes has strobes by the doors that are loud enough you can hear from the exterior of the building. Now days I dont know about my second ES but my MS has EST Genesis speaker strobes some appear to be horn strobes. Especially in the stairwells by the exits. My second ES has EST Genesis inside the building with Integrity Horn strobes on the exterior. And my HS still has the same fire alarm system.

    • @OldSchoolFireAlarms
      @OldSchoolFireAlarms  9 лет назад

      These alarms were so loud that you could hear them even if standing outside the building. Especially the horns. George Barber School is a classic example. Even though there was no horns mounted outside the building, you could still hear the fire alarm from outside the school. George Barber School had three floors, with two horns installed on each floor. One at each end of the hallways. So when the fire alarm was pulled, you had a total of six horns, plus one in the gym going off all at the same time. You couldn"t help but hear them from the outside as well. Be sure to watch the George Barber School Fire Alarm video. You'll see what I mean. It is really loud; the sound resonated all through the school building.

      Old School Fire Alarms 2 horns on each floor? Im guessing fire code regulations are getting stricter as time moves on. My middle school from the 1950s had at least 5 maybe 6 single stroke bells on the second floor and from 10-15 on the first floor. And now days many buildings that size have more fire alarm indicators then that. My high school which originally opened its current building in 1949 renovated in the late 90s and it appears were the original single stroke bells were the new EST Integrity horn strobes were installed and it appears the gymnasium the horn strobes were mounted differently as there are 4 in the gym as my middle school only had 1 bell in the gym and the cafeteria. Maybe the same. Since my middle school only had 1 bell in the cafeteria. Which is still mounted on the wall despite the deactivation of the original fire alarm system. And my high school the music rooms as well as the restrooms and even the workshops in the technology education rooms have horn strobes and the class rooms have strobes. I think it was wrong they installed horn strobes in the restrooms as those things were super loud. I do wish the fire alarm installers placed just a strobe in the restrooms. And the office I currently work in has the Radionics D503S horn strobes throughout the floor and when doing renovations in the front reception area with adding new meeting rooms 5 Wheelock Exceders were installed in the area. One in the waiting room. One in the hallway from operations to the reception area. 2 in the large meeting room by the reception area and 1 in the small meeting room by the reception area.

    • @OldSchoolFireAlarms
      @OldSchoolFireAlarms  8 лет назад

      +Braden Robison Hello Braden. Great observation! Yes, that is an extension spring fastened to the end of the pull rod on the 3rd floor of the school. All pull rods have either an extension spring fastened to the end of the rod or compression spring at the bottom of the rod that controls the pull action that gives the rod resistance.

      +Old School Fire Alarms Isn't it the reason these types of alarm systems were popular back then is because most schools in the 1900's had 2 or 3 floors?

    • @OldSchoolFireAlarms
      @OldSchoolFireAlarms  8 лет назад

      Yes that is true. But the primary reason is due to the fact, when these school were first built, electric automated fire alarm systems had not been invented yet.

      In this particular school, the horn(s) were used for tornado drills only. I just wanted to see how the horn sounded. The single stroke bells are the only audible devises that sound when the fire alarm is pulled.

      Unlike a fire, there usually is some warning and time before a tornado strikes. Giving someone in the building time to sound the alarm.

      When I was there, it had the talking Simplexes, they were brand new at the time I think, as they used to broadcast warnings over the 1940's PA boxes. But the intercom system for the PA was from the 40's or 50's, and there was abandoned fire bells in some hallways.
      Here's a photo of the intercom: farm2.static.flickr.com/1420/5112237349_157272c5b8.jpg
