Very similar indeed. The same basic principles apply in both. I would advise getting a manual from autozone or any parts supply place for reference and be sure to mark every gear AND shaft before removal of the chain as the cams will shift. If you have a camera it would also help you in reassy. if you happen to forget how somthing goes, you could refer to the photos.
You do great work and great videos. I am a 23 year German dealer tech myself and notice how you are efficient but take the time to do good work and that comes from experience. Subbed.
I have watched all three videos, three times now. I have a 2010 Camaro with the crank sensor code. Will this be the same as doing the Cadillac timing chains?
Before u took the Timing Cover off u did position the #1 Piston at TDC RIGHT? Correct me if I'm wrong u do suppose to rotate the Crank to TDC, Lock the Cam than remove the Timing Chain / Tensioner correct...
Im doing this right now to my 07 saturn aura xr. went pretty easy after watching this vid even with it being fwd. my question is? what made you replace the cam phaser? when I spin the crank I can see the chain raise up on the cam gear and it has a good amount of wear. is this just from the chain being lose or do I have a two bad cam phasers? the engine sounder like it had bad valve slap. any help would be great before I get it all back together
Im doing a cts right now.. kinda the same. the far right side cam actuator broke as well as the bolt. Timing was way off..so my question is ...do i have to replace the head? Im thinking the valves bent not sure though? Should i just replace the cam and actuator??
Hey Nugget, with the chain guide that is attached to the oil pump at the bottom; did you replace that? I'm in the middle of mine and my kit did not come with that one because it is typically sold as the whole oil pump. Was curious if you replaced yours and how it ran after. In the videos it looks like the old one, but I hate to assume. Thanks!
As long as you retain the chain from having any slack while the tensioner and guide are off it wont make a difference. The crank and cams should be marked as well to ensure you did install correctly, you can lock the cams down but it's not necc.
hey fella, i appreciate the heck out of your vids my son and i are gonna attempt it on my 2005, how close do you think the 04 and 05 are? also, where did you buy the parts, the chains, etc is that a 'dealer' item' only? mike
Hi there I'm doing the job myself for my ly7 Alloytec engine my timing seems to be completely out due to the stretched chains,I was after some advice on how to re-time the engine from scratch. If you can talk me through it that would be great,I don't really want to put everything back before this is timed properly.
Assemble it wrong and you have an issue for sure. I don't believe there's a way to talk you through it either. Search for timing marks or reference a manual at your local auto parts store to be sure its correct. Turn the engine by hand 4 revolutions after initial set up to be sure nothing binds.
About 2 have cam gear and timing chain replaced on 04 cad CTS 3.6L. A little nervous about the cost and whether this will fix the problem. Computer shows p302, p303 initially. I replaced plugs and replace 3rd coil. Moved the new coil to #2 problem did not follow. My question is... haven't received an estimate for repair yet. Would be nice to know how much a job like this would cost normally. Considering 2 or 3 estimates. Thanks for any advice u might provide. Glad I found your vid!!!
You need to verify the fault before just tearing into it which you have partially done already by verifying the fire or spark. Did you spin it over while looking at the coil with a plug installed to make sure it fired ? Also the compression stroke should be at that time as well. If there is a valve timing issue, compression would be affected. Then there's the fuel injector, vacuum leak and such that needs to be looked at. Happy hunting !
Hi. I have a 2004 cts 3.6 and my mechanic replaced the timing chain and now that he cranked it shakes a lot and sounds bad. And he gets codes. P0008 ,p0017 and p0016. Any ideas of what could have went wrong? I would greatly appreciate your help. Thanks in advance
Hey bro, thanks so much for taking your time to post this video. I'm in the Raleigh/Durham area. I have a leak from the front crankshaft seal on my 2003 Cadillac Deville. Do you work on these on the side or could you recommend someone who does?
I just bought a 04 cadillac srx, I'm having that rattling noise. now once these steps are done to repair the timing chains will there no longer be the rattling noise?
Hi! I had the timing chain replaced by Cadillac Service Mechanics and now the crank key snapped making the crankshaft move and bending the valves resulting in no compression. Do you think they could have done something wrong when replacing the chain that caused the crank key to snap? My warranty won't cover because it's not a lubricated part. They want to charge me $6,000. I don't want to pay if it was something they did wrong...Please help... Otalia
Hey i just had 11 cts come in and it had the tensioner on the passenger head go bad. older mechanice took it all apart... didn't mark the head though. the crank chain and right chain are still in place and haven't been removed from the engine. thanks, for any help. if you want i will give ya my email if it would be easier
Nice job i need some hel i do not know nothing about this but i have a sts with the 3.6 when the engines gets warm it starts misfiring only on cylinder 2 i replaced i jector coil pack spark plugs and the problem is still there my brother checked the timing belt and said is not installed right dp you think that would fix the problem
2012nugget i bought it in January it is a used car with 170000 miles and no i havent done anything besides de ignition coil and spark plugs my brother jist checked the timing belt and said it is in good condition but it is out of time car was parked and im trying to fix it and when the engine is on theres a clicking sound on the throttle body like if it tries to adjust something
Yes he said the tooth are not adjusted something like that and yes when the engine is on you open the hood and the engine starts shaking and you can hear the throttle body clicking niose. When the engine is cold the vibration on the engine dosappears but as the temperature goes up it starts misfiring.
And the vibration comes again i dont know i spent hundreds triying to fix it and it's the same i dont drive it nowhere because the problem and the fuel economy is bad because of the misfire on cylinder specifically number#2 thank you
I have got a code P0446 and was told it has to do with the Solenoid. Can you please give me some instructions on how to change it. I kind of got a glimpse of the solenoid when you assembled everything back together Thanks.
It takes me arround 8 hrs. The "book time" is what they are using, you should challenge that and negotiate a lower rate. Book time is always very generous.
They are known for going out. The one in the video was broken, visibly. The other was "slapping" when the motor was turned manually. It would get to a point where it jumped forward, it should not do that at all. Im not sure what raising up on the gear means but it doesn't sound good. Can you shoot me a video of it ?
One of the best detailed mechanic videos I’ve seen. Great job!! How long did that job actually take?

As I did this job two weeks ago and will be going back in in about a week, do you recommend to replace that crank seal again?

Sorry , been out of town. The parts are available all over, most parts stores.

Did you have to use any special tool to install the new cam phaser? Or does it have a key way on the cam to line it back up
Simply remove and install, no special tool required.

Hi. Please advise if anything needs to be done to startup after changing timing chains. iI have hard time to start it up.

The chain is out a tooth.
you said you use steel wool to clean the gasket areas. is this safe?
Nugget, how did you keep the engine from turning over when you torqued the crank bolt on the harmonic balancer
+Donald Estes I hold it at the flywheel , wedge a bar on the flywheel teeth.
i just pull the north-star motor out last week 24h job .. if i had to it again i will never do a north- start motor again it a pain in the ass

Jay Gee Not in that area , sorry I cant help.
what will this job run parts and labor?
Hello, I see that this took 3 videos to complete. What's the total estimated completion time? My dealership is telling me 16 hours.
I just bought a 04 cadillac srx, I'm having that rattling noise. now once these steps are done to repair the timing chains will there no longer be the rattling noise?
+Pyper Beard It is a common failure on those engines. Of course the noise goes away!
PART 4 !!!!! LOL I'm dying to hear what she sounds like
Nice job and detailed description dude, keep posting!

Unfortunately there is a possibility they damaged it, it was damaged somehow, they just don't shear for no reason or cause.

You'll have to set up the entire timing now, thank the older guy !
Why did you replace that one cam actuator? What was it doing?
It was cracked and causing an obnoxious noise.

How much does a job like this cost???? Dealer cost =? normal shop cost?
Is that the 4.6
How much is the dealer telling on cost?
can you list the gaskets and seals needed for the job?
The gaskets will come with the new pump.
you didnt say anything about the allignment of the chains stage 1 and stage 2 marks
Hi bro would you send me a timing chain diagram for 2004 Cadillac SRX please
why did you wait till its done to film a video
+Kenneth Mcaskil What ?
