It was all so much more real back then... the judges were actually choosing (sometimes) to let people down gently, and we saw genuine people being genuinely upset.
I'll give the Brits Their Props. I don't think that Nigel Lythgoe realized he was going to change the Genre of TV with "Reality TV". I don't think that The Man realized that were it not for him, there may never had been Girls Aloud, and as for the US Kids, maybe Jennifer Hudson may not have won a Grammy or an Oscar, Carrie Underwood or even Kelli Pickler made not have made it, Artist. Simon Cowell almost never brought "Idol" to The US because he felt that The US Popstars Eden's Crush were horrible.
I'm asking this on the off chance, but I remember there being a red headed girl who had like greeny blue eyes who I used to think was as hot as hell! I don't think she made it particularly far, but I remember seeing her perform a few times so she must have done OK. I think it was in this popstars program. Can't be certain but i'm like 90% sure. It was certainly around 2000 'ish'. Does it ring any bells?
The fashions at the time are disastrous! Mind you so were some of mine in 2001! It looks like clobber from a bad jumble sale thrown together to make outfits! Mind u the programme is more real and honest than anything the x factor has ever made
I hate the early 00s fashionabla, it's the worst that has ever existed, can't believe I loved it back then. Even some of the ridiculous stuff in the 80s are better, fun at least.
In terms of Duets, they should have chosen "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell (RIP). Their chemistry back in the day was great!
Claire would have been better on the X Factor /Pop Idol even the Voice... The mistake she made was to try and cut a record on the back of this show... Darius is hillarious!!
Australia started it a year earlier, with Bardot. The intro/outro is almost exactly the same as that on American Idol, it's pretty much a direct rip off.
Lythgoe said the programme shows "the actual making of a band, what goes into that". This is absolute bollocks. Real bands are not made this way. What was created by this method, and still is, is not a band but a product. Real bands are formed by musicians with passion, requires finding the right people, driving long distances, lugging heavy gear, negotiating fees, fixing blown speakers, dealing with drunks and playing hundreds of crap gigs in shitty venues. Even then, there are no guarantees.
God i actually used to love these shows i hardly bother now with the x factor the so called singers so over exaggerated😳 awful despite hearsay were good at the start i even had their album not now though, liberty X were better lol. Mind u i cant sing just play the piano better instead!
This is so embarrassing to watch!!!! It feels like satire with the narrator! The ugly, garish and baggy clothes are absolutely hideous, people are so much better now and more polished in auditions.
It was all so much more real back then... the judges were actually choosing (sometimes) to let people down gently, and we saw genuine people being genuinely upset.
I remember watching this when I was 10 years old... this type of show was absolutely more real then
This is so much better than the X factor etc. Non of the sob stories, over coiffured judges, stupid music playing just raw and to the point
thanks for this upload, enjoyed watching this season when it aired
Oh man the cringe level is amazing
the world has changed so much in these last 22 years...I liked it how it was back then.
Can't believe this is 11 years ago...the whole reality thing was fresh and interesting then. It's not the same now...

Nearly 20 years now...
21 years Now!
So this is where all these shows began!!! Seems so long ago now but I remember watching it back then and loving the bad auditions lol
It actually started a year earlier in Australia, with Bardot. It's somewhere here on RUclips too. I'm binging on all the English language versions. ☺
Remember, it was the five REJECTS who became the real winners of this show in the end. 🙂
Called Liberty X.
Nigel Lithgow has always looked ancient, hasn't he?
Darius and his partner interacted beautifully in their duet.
He would have been so out of place in a band but his voice was perfect for a solo artist.
Darius! Mr Rico Suave himself.
its hard performing in front of a audience. everyone staring at you. it takes balls to get up there.
They made that reach song seem like heavy lifting. It wasn’t even that difficult 😂
They used to tend to use that song in drama schools.
i watched this on tv when i was like 10
It was all VERY different before the master manipulator that is Simon Cowell got involved.
Not that much different
Coldclough You think? for me it's like night and day.
BucklandsP3 In presentation terms maybe, this is more meaner and dirtier and less glamorous but the concept is the same
Coldclough It seems much less manipulated and artificial if the main difference I think. Not nearly as glossy and contrived either.
@@BucklandsP3 agree. Production values and budget thrown at it.

3 years later replying to my own comment, but here she is! about 25 seconds in: ruclips.net/video/HgmvSDBTZ_k/видео.html&ab_channel=annysugar

A pretty uninteresting fact but the voice over guy on this was the guy who played Casandras yuppie boss in only fools and horses.
This was tons better than stupid X factor ! I miss nasty Nigel !
I'm cringing I used to watch this when I was 10 or 11 lol
Gosh the fashion then was sooo bad!
vibeuk2003 like it was five years ago lol
Its come back into fashion

What ever happened to the one called Claire, she was amazing
She has a GREAT voice. She wouldn't have fit into Girls Aloud, however. She had a soloists voice.
Ben Schaeffer She was fab. She started in the right key. Most of them started too high & couldn’t reach the top note
@@tillyboos Why you talking about Girls Aloud? Different show.
Unfortunately he had trouble controlling his hand gestures...
Newcastle is where Cheryl from Girls Aloud is from while Birmingham is where Duran Duran is from.
there!!!
Most of theses people are approaching 50 now!
In 8 or 9 years!
This is the oriniiga lX factor, Americas got talent and all the rest. Survivor too.
Australia started it a year earlier, with Bardot. The intro/outro is almost exactly the same as that on American Idol, it's pretty much a direct rip off.
Actually, Survivor started in the Netherlands in 1997. Pop Idol I believe began in 1999.

UncleFeedle real bands are made this way actually. What you’re talking about is just another process. There is more than one process.
Spot on uncle feedle
awww Darius
Is that Jessica Taylor at the right at 1:00?
Cringe at every turn. I never thought the 2000s would look so out dated.
4.22 He sounds like Alan Partridge
Darius 😢😢
The other four girls in S Club 7 couldn't hit the 'Reach' note so their standards here are pretty high.

Ive got goosies.
Is this a spoof?😂
Lol
Nasty Nigel!!!!
It's annoying with the finger clicking and tapping of feet when singing
Before it all became a bit of a joke.
I remember this haha sooooo cringee

Most are not that good, singing or dancing
