• Working with Ted Templeman.
• The best heavy metal band he ever saw play live
• The future of Van Halen
• And more...

Great stuff !
Way underrated drummer … one of the best
I love Alex, but he isn't underrated at all. I have no idea why everyone says everyone is underrated on youtube comments.
@@demonicsweaterstrue dat!
You can't be a drummer. Alex is unoriginal. John Bonham copycat.
@@demonicsweaters obviously you don't quite understand the meaning of "underrated"...I LOVE Alex...but in the professional music talk world he is NEVER brought up in the talk of greatest drummers list when he should be!! But it's true...oh Neil Peart this or john Bonham that, etc...other than the fans, he never got the critical acclaim he certainly deserved, hence "underrated".
@@phoenixrising-theglencampb330 That is completely incorrect. Drumeo has a video called "The Genius Of Alex Van Halen", Modern Drummer recently did a multi-drummer tribute series to him, he is CONSTANTLY regarded as one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. I've been playing drums since I was 10, and have seen, read, heard about him non-stop since that time. He's been on the cover of Modern Drummer and Drums magazines many, many times, people constantly marvel over his snare sound and unique style. If there is one thing he definitely is NOT, is underrated. He was in one of the biggest selling rock bands of all time and is one of the few drummers that is actually a household name.
Alex Van Halen is a top 10 drummer in the greatest drummers of all time, he's top 5 in my book, he's just a bad ass, and his drums are distinctive
i dont think so
@Shane Martin who cares what you think
Alex is the perfect drummer for Van Halen. He's Top Shelf!!
@hardrockmaster2125 I hear ya brother.
You forgot a zero.
Top 100 drummers of all time.
One of the best hard rock drummers in the fucking world.
ummm i dont think sooooo
Alex never played the drums. It was all fake. Phil Collins was the real Van Halen drummer. Alex pretended to play on stage and Phil was behind the curtain playing the real drum kit. What`s even weirder is David Lee Roth was playing most of the lead guitar parts on the first three albums until Eddie learned to copy it. They had to build a guitar Eddie could figure out how to play with his unusually tiny hands. Frank Zappa wrote nearly all the songs. When he died the band was finished. It`s all in Sammy Hagar`s book.
This interview is a gem. With David you got a Lotta hot air, with Eddie I think you had a 50-50 chance of a good interview. However, Alex was really good. Very informative with a little humor but sounds like a true musician. I’m a big fan of the band and of course I miss Ed Van Halen. It would be nice to hear them again…
Agree 100%. We could def use some more Alex Van Halen interviews in the world.
Dave was hot air? That sounded kind of stupid. He was probably the most honest and well spoken of the group. Al is pulling her leg for much of this interview. Talking about the brown M&Ms he was totally full of it, knowing he was, and just messing with her. Now that we know the true reason for the requirement. And they didn't trash hotels or backstage areas? Riiiight.
Hot air from Roth? Wrong, he's genius at interviews. He created Van Halen's party image
Alex is smartest member of the band.
@@HardRockMaster7577 Wrong, Roth is smarter then them all
Awesome interview Alex is the man with all the brains
Awesome, never hear Alex by himself!Thank You!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I was just thinking the same. He rarely does this kind of stuff. Listening now ;)
That was really cool. As long as I have been a fan, I have never heard anything like this. After all the decades of being a fan, he is still one I would love to meet. It would be cool getting my van halen 1 signed. That would leave just Dave. Alex is a huge bucket list for me. Lots of respect for him. He is a massive talent on the drums.
Wow!
Heard in an interview with David Lee Roth that the brown M&Ms was a quality check in their contract to verify if the venue / promoter actually read it. If they saw brown M&Ms more than likely other more impotent details were missed. Pretty ingenious.
Amazing discovery, Geraldo.
I like how Alex doesn’t give up the game, even though the interviewer drills down on brown M&Ms for like 10 minutes.
His drum work on both 'Fair Warning' and 'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge' is raw power, steady drive, heavy touch. And those are my two all time favorite VH records. Alex van Halen
These interviews are gold..thanks for putting these up!!
This is actually July 1980. Probably on or about the 25th, when VH played the Boston Gardens. a.) Alex mentions "And the Cradle Will Rock" on the "new album" (Women and Children First) / b. Alex mentions having recently played "PinkPop" which VH played in May of 1980. / c.) They mention the last time in Boston, when VH played the Orpheum, which would have been 5/13/79
That would make sense after hearing his Zeppelin comment, Bonham was still alive until September.
Thanks for this...I have changed the date in the title.
@@TheTapesArchive Wow Nice!! Thanks!
yes to this
Kickass detective work. Next stop: over to 5150 and help Wolf catalogue all that music
VH played Boston garden on 7/25/80. excellent interview.
Eddie is in this interview too. Love it!
That was very cool to hear.
Hey JB, I’m only about eight minutes in, but I’m wondering why Alex said they only moved to the United States in 1970? I thought they were around six and seven when they moved here. That would’ve been like early 60s. I think he’s just doing a little fast talking, ha ha. He could hang with Dave, I didn’t realize Alex talked this much, ha ha. 👍🏻
Alex is very intelligent , it would have been great if he gotten sober before 1987 when his dad passed away from alcoholism. Great interview, Thank you for posting. The 1995 interview was great too.
Typical drummer... smart, funny, observant, good looking, intelligent...
Thank you from a fellow drummer! Lol
Excellent interview - thank you for making it available
Great drummer and an extremely sharp mind! WOW!
"Our music doesn't need acoustics", Alex Van Halen
It was probably Ezren who said “it’s my record, you’re gonna do it my way…”
Ted Templeman was a genius
The first four albums are nothing but fire.
Exellent. Alex is great to listen to. Thanks
This is really fun !
I like to hear these honest guys ! Real musicians!
And now we will miss it a lot !
But their music stays relevant !
Compliments
Alex should’ve been the mouthpiece, he’s more coherent than Ed and Dave put together!
Over DLR? To me he was one of the greatest frontmen ever. A little crazy at times sure.
I just meant in interviews haha! Daves a genius but it’s nice to hear some straight answers from Alex!
@@BassManDan1018 Ah, makes sense. Thanks for checking it out.
He actually. Was if you go back you'll notice he was the band leader and original manager
@@robertdefex3439 Alex would thump on you until you saw things his way 😎
I've always said that nothing gets done in that band without Alex's approval.
impressed, alex is good at breaking situations down into the smaller elements that make them up.
dk if hes being entirely honest about how much he went to school becuz he did eventually enroll in community college which probs means he had a high school diploma
I've noticed reading articles and interviews that Alex sometimes comes off as a bullshit artist... the thing is, is he does it on purpose. Either out of fun, or to throw readers off. A good example of this is his "church organ" kit from 1982... he explains in the article that the organ pipe design in the front acts as pitch pipes like what you would see in a cathedral church...
He then says... hahaha... depending on the venue size, acoustics etc. will determine which pitch pipe the mic is placed in. That way optimal sound and output is delivered at the pipes frequency, which is in line with acoustic readings they get from the venue LOL...
Now, there is no way such a thing would have that much of an effect on the way that drum sounds. I think he was just having fun with the interviewer. Perhaps, he came off as being naieve and would believe it coming from Al... and, of course, there are those drummers out there who would read that and actually try it. And all the while claiming to get the desired effects that were nothing more than Al's sarcastic make believe bullshit 😄
He said at the end of that bit that he in fact did graduate high school, followed by: I think it's some sort of state law that says u have to.
Nice to hear Alex give props to The Damned. Great band.
Man, Alex VanHalen is a wicked smart dude.
He really is. I always enjoyed listening to him talk about everything technical with live sound, and such. Those radial horns in his kick drums... many people think those were there strictly for looks. But what they don't know is that they actually served a purpose.
Those horns and digital triggering was how he got that "machine gun" effect to his kick drums sound, especially when playing fast double bass... he was very innovative when it came to drum sounds
@@jackmomma7481 The guy is a BOSS! Amazing drummer.
My favorite drummer and yeah, pretty smart- until the bit about already knowing (for 5 years) his HS teachers' lessons smh..
@@TURK-yn3ge yeah, he's definitely my favorite. I used to always joke about Al saying that he had a second job he took on working as one of scarfaces associates. He was the exterminator, and would respond to calls about cock-a-roach infestations
Alex had/has a real great sense of humor!!
Gotta love it.
Thanks Alex for being like a big brother to me as well.
Fair Warning is one of the greatest rock albums of all time. Just press play.
So true!
This is home. This is Mean Street.
Could not agree with you more!! My fav vh album. I love the aggressiveness, i know it was a dark time for evh, but it made for great music.
This was awesome.
Thanks for sharing
It’s funny how so many say he was underrated. I’ve always felt like the band was 4 incredible musicians no matter the lineup. He’s gotten plenty of props from fans his entire career. AVH is one of the best drummers of all time.
Yep. His Shuffles are the best
They saved the liking of brown for the SOUND. The "M-80" thing...when I saw them that year in New Haven, a large sounding charge went off, and Dave proceeded to say he'd kick the "f-ing ass" of the perpetrator...but then I heard a rumor that it seemed to happen in every city, so I questioned that it was part of the act. Eduardo threw a cigarette at me, I was honored.
All that musical training DID have a good influence because it makes you aware of musical form, disciplines your understanding, makes you aware of what you're doing and how you're doing it. Hooks, all that.
Like your classical training influences your playing.
What I mean is that nothing is wasted. No knowledge is useless, because it disciplines your mind.
Of course hard Rock and heavy metal is art.
Anything that moves people is art.
Agreed. Classical cats always know where their towel is.
Captain Sensible speaks!Thanks man!
Great interview. Interesting comments about the industry. If you cannot trust live performances, why would you trust anything on a record? It is hard to know what goes on behind the scenes. Interesting comments on art, very down to earth take on what art means. There is no sharp line between high and low art, popular and classical music. Classical education means learning from past achievements. Although at one point it is confused with learning theory. What education really means is not having to reinvent the wheel. People have been making music for a long time.
I mentioned this once, but can't find the comment. It's worth mentioning again though... at -21:53 Alex talks about their basic easy to understand lyrics. I honestly think he's referring to Neil Peart and RUSH... especially the 2112 album... long time RUSH fans say that Van Halen was known to criticize RUSH for being "unreasonably complex", and that Dave would make fun of their album covers
But seeing how RUSH pulled a 40 plus year history racking up tons of albums and live albums... you can't even count how many they've done. And all the while there was never animosity within the group... basically, Dave should be eating his words regarding RUSH these days. Back then, thry likely thought that RUSH would never be able to adapt to the change in times znd would fade away... he was wrong about that
Vh and rush my 2 favorites gotta say when I was kid vh was number 1 and as an adult rush is number 1 and it hurts me to hear the vh brother talked shit about rush I think they said that cause Neil part was already in the modern drummer hall of fame before 30 years old so can't say shit about his drumming let's talk shit about his lyrics and rush was the best band of all time 40 years non stop no line up change no MTV videos not dating celebrities just hard work and loyal to their fans rush was the best
I picture Alex pounding out fresh beats /rhythms while Edward matches some riffs writing original jams weeks or months before recording began. IMO
Great interview!! Got a few words wrong on the transcript though. Like "Random" is actually "Rather" and others but not too much out of whack. Really great to hear these old tapes though! Thank you!
Hi Greg! Thanks for checking it out. We try our best on the transcript but only about 90% accurate.
Our proofreader (me) is lazy.
Alex is a sharp guy. Speaks well and is straight forward. Normal guy in more normal times.
I think that's a good assessment. It's certainly my memory of him and of that conversation. Thanks for listening.
It’s a shame Al didn’t do more interviews and even tutorials about drums and stuff.
I have to believe there are more out there, but never published like this one.
Yeah he should have done. A lot more interviews
This fellow is brilliant
It's funny Alex quote of "one day at a time' and says it "sounds like a fucking movie/TV show". Little did he know...
Actually, I think he did that on purpose. Almost as if he were giving a "clue"
Love that they didn't at the time reveal the true meaning behind the brown M&M's.
Yeah, but I wish I had asked.
@@marcallan4419 I think the truth behind it came out after Dave left. I've heard stories that they would trash the place. I guess there was one venue that didn't and the weight of the stage damaged the foundation to the point it had to be replaced.
Can't agree with Alex on The Damned. The music is there as well as the show. Great interview. Big Rock 4ever!
That was pretty awesome! Fun to hear Alex. He sure was all over the place, reminded me of Dirk Diggler when he was on those coke benders. 😝🥁👍🏻
Wow. Alex should have been the spokesperson. Or at least. Done way more interviews. He is sharp on point. Articulate
Good lord he was my age in this interview. Makes me feel all unaccomplished😭
The family moved to Pasadena in 1962.
great interview
I dont get the part where Alex says they moved here, meaning la from Amsterdam for him and Eddie, 10 years ago.so if this interview is 81 that would mean Alex would of been 18 and ed 16 10 years before, but its said that they moved to the states in 62 and ed always says he was 7 in one interview and 8 in another.so seemed to be way off what he says here.
The good ole days (daze!)
Drummers don't swing anymore.
Al needs to do some speaking on how he developed his technique and what his vision is on playing.
Either he sounds hauntingly like Ed in some parts, or he is in the interview too.
very well spoken
10:16 (mumbles) deciphered ... he says " I'll be one of the first to get out and," get a hot dog"
If there’s brown M/Ms, they didn’t read the rider. Simple as that
I thought it would be drum tracks but this'll do!
Wow, this was pretty incredible to hear!
Thanks for commenting Seth! Glad you liked it!
Alex gotta work on his math, ha ha. I figure, the time of this interview, he must’ve been around 28. From what I read, I think he was 10 or maybe a little older when they moved here. Over 15 years from the time of this interview.
But for some reason, he really wanted to distance himself from LA. Saying they’re not from LA. And they just moved 10 years ago, ha ha.
Then he talked about putting up flyers all over LA. They created their style in LA, wrote all their music in LA. Made their starred in LA, all their careers to LA. I guess even someone in a big band like Van Halen, wants to sound kind of cool and act like they are outsiders. Alex and Ed were a little defensive, always felt they had something to prove. And I’m glad they did, and had great lives. 😝🤘🏻🎸🇺🇸🥁🔥
Love Alex..Rockin Show 🤘🖤✌
Ohh Ohh Little Dreamer Alex I love you and thank you Brother From Dan in Sebring Keep the Speed Pedals to the Metal
Why does he say he got to LA ten years ago? If he is 28 here, that would have made him 18 and his family moved to Pasadena when he was maybe 5 or so…..weird
I agree with that last comment. Alex, this interview, he is coherent, personable, knowledgeable. Dave was always the same. Never any of that. He was always about hyperactive gibberish. Great interview.
Actually The Tapes Archive posted an excellent interview with Dave just recently. And there are more out there if you want look.

We take it one day at a time. Oh the irony...
I guess ill go "there"...for those who might be curious about the "M&M's" story...it is true! As Alex did agree. Whst he didnt convulge, was the reason it was written into the contract about no brown mms..Dave later explained that it was a kinda shifty way of making sure the tour managers and their roadies actually READ THE CONTRACT. Most of the contract involved security, equipment and safety issues ...it was a sort of test. ...

It is time to do a tribute show for Eddie Van Halen.
Al is talking 100mph. Coked up? He has a tongue in cheek or sarcastic tone.
Yeah he is!!! LOLOLOL.. I wasn't even paying attention to that part of it until I saw where you mention that in this comment... yeah, Alex is definitely feeling a little too good for this interview haha... I bet his throat and lips are numb as hell
Definitely coked up👀👍
The mighty Van Halen !!!!!!
al is my pal !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember back in the days of MySpace, there was an Alex Van Halen account that, honestly, I think was legit... in fact, Valarie's vedifices account would post little pictures saying shit like "Have a good day", which to me said it was legit, but also kind of low profile. But he did post on it in 2007 during the tour some asking what everyone thought of the new shows they were doing...
Anyway, there was this chic I remember always seeing her post those animated photos to his. She was some kind of model in LA. What was so funny was she posted an animated photo of a digital pager that had a message that scrolled across like the pagers did... it said "ALEX VAN HALEN IS MY NIGGA... ALEX VAN HALEN IS MY NIGGA..." hahaha...
For some reason it was so damn funny seeing that scrolling across non stop in large digital letters... probably because it was hard to imagine Al being referred to as "MY NIGGA" hahsh
10:18 "I'll be one of the first to get out and get a hot dog." You're welcome. 🌭
Al is sharp
nice
Thank Ludurigan, we really appreciate your support.
he lied about "growing up in Holland" and "we've only been here about 10 years ago." If this was 1981.
@angelaclement1497 I disagree that 1-6 is "growing up." They came to the U.S. in 1962. It was closer to 20 years than 10. No big deal but he lied. lol
I think Alex no longer wants to drum without his brother playing guitar and Wolfgang no longer wants to play VH songs without his dad. Wolf said in Oct 2020 when his dad passed that VH is disbanded. Sammy Hagar and Mike are carrying on the VH torch and maybe Dave as well even though he wanted to retire from music. The old farts have to quit eventually. Aerosmith is retiring after final tours. So, as of now there is nobody with the last name of Van Halen playing Van Halen songs right now. I think Eddie's passing was the final nail in the coffin for the band. He was the sound of VH with his unique guitar playing. Their final concerts with Roth as lead singer again were in October 2015. Eddie had planned a reunion tour with Sammy and Mike coming back but his passing nixed that. VH was inactive for about 5 years before Eddie's passing. And there was going to be a VH tribute concert to honor Eddie but Wolf said dysfunction among surviving former VH members nixed that as well. Wolf played some VH songs from the early 80's at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert in Sept 2022. He felt that was his closure with VH stuff.
He talks like Abed on 'Community'.
That ain't what eddie said about recording in 82

Alex ran the band. Ed was a mouthpiece
Wasn't Roth more the mouthpiece? Hard to find too many interview with just Al.

Did anybody catch about halfway thru he was getting irritated. And directed the interviewer to talk about their influences? Thought uhoh this is about to get ugly... lol
He's just coked up is all and getting overly excited. I've been there myself and know that if you do good enough stuff and binge on it over a couple of days, or more, it's common to have brief periods of anxiety just from speeding so hard and being absorbed in a conversation like he is
@@jackmomma7481 You sure are cool. You're so hip & cool & edgy 😎
I fucking WISH I could pay just $10 to see Yes.
I paid $6 to hear Yes in concert two times in three weeks at two different venues. They were so good live my friends and I traveled to another city to see them a second time. If you're thinking, "Those must have been the days!", you're right.
I should add that was 1974, gas was about 50 cents a gallon to put the money into perspective. I drove an MG sports car I purchased new the year before for $3200.
Why does it say this is from both 1980 and 1981? Fix the error. A commenter below has been kind enough to determine it is from July 1980, but don't you care enough to correct the discrepancy?
You want me to re-upload the video and lose all the comments and views? Don't you think that's a big ask for no money?

Haha, no..timestamp please
That's something I do all the time, dropping references to certain things... especially when commenting online and the situation presents itself. Its a fun way to see how many people catch them.
Plus, references serve as great indicators as to how knowledgeable and big of a fan the person using them is if dropping a comment on an artists page (that's how you get their attention and a response from them for real. Not by the typical "I worship you comments" they've been hearing and reading for decades. And it often works...)

Agreed. I still need to add chapter markers.
did eddie- with van halen- ever record with any other drummer? case closed!
Now I can and want to listen to what Alex has to say far beyond wanting to sit through an hour of Dave's yap and trap. He's very smart but his wit is not as quick and funny as it could be for a guy that keeps his mouth going "8 days a week". I think he should learn when to say something and when it's just verbal diarrhea. Alex says intelligent things that are actually in line with the conversation.
