    When Joel and Sarah were being chased by the one infected guy (leading up to Sarah’s death scene) and it was just _hurling_ itself at them and crashing into everything, was so cool to see. It stepped up the fear factor because you can see that this creature *does not care* what it has to do to get to its prey, and it doesn’t look like an actor trying playing a creature at all. It’s such a believable performance

    Speaking of that first kid after the 20 year jump, he didn’t just alluded that he died, they actually show him in the truck. A woman tells Joel “I can’t” because it’s just a kid, and they really focus on his shoelaces (same as the infected kid). Crazy fast character development to see him go from sobbing, holding one child, to then completely empty,l and emotionless caring another to the burn pit.

    • @botanical_chloride_6471
      @botanical_chloride_6471 Год назад +85

      YESS I loved that parallel of seeing how Joel has changed purely through how he holds the child, the difference between him holding Sarah vs that child perfectly highlights just how much of a toll the past 20 years has taken on him emotionally. Masterful cinematography 💯

    • @mintgreen292
      @mintgreen292 Год назад +17

      Yeah, what was crazy was I didn't realize the kid tested positive and I got upset that they didn't sanitize the injection site when they jabbed the kid. It all made sense when I saw the shoes in the burn pit scene.

      The one thing I wish they had done slightly differently was the Tess & Robert bit, she doesn’t seem to be quite as hard of a character yet. I think all the women are so strong. But I loved the bit in the game where when Joel & Tess are in their apartment & Tess had been in an alteration with roberts guys & Joel asks ‘are these assholes still with us?’ & she says ‘huh, funny’ it really shows how much of a badass she is & how she can handle her own. In the 1st episode I feel like she felt less like that because they took that bit out. But I’m excited to see her in the next episode & see if she has some badass moments then.

    I was waiting for this! First episode was magnificent. 😮‍💨 The performances from everyone were great but especially Pedro Pascal and Nico Parker. That opening hit just as hard as the game and maybe even harder since we got to spend much more time with Sarah in the show. The new scenes we got for more context and story mixed with scenes straight out of the game was balanced phenomenally. I had high expectations for this show and they absolutely blew past them. Safe to say my TLOU addiction has been satisfied. For now at least. 😅

    Another thing I really liked was that the guard specified on the radio that Sarah had an injured ankle. In the game I believe Joel tells him he thinks Sarah’s leg is broken but the soldier only mentions to his superior that there are “civilians on the outer perimeter” then when presumably told to shoot them he says “but, there’s a little girl.” In the game, I think it’s meant to show the chaos and confusion of not yet knowing the cause of infection.

    The episode was sheer perfection! I'm surprised you didn't talk about the radio code and song! The end of the episode, with the shot of the room and radio when it turned on, it was playing an 80s song. Ellie found that key for the decade in which a song was released... and 80s was marked "x"... from the hour 11 mark to about an hour and 15 minutes into the show, Ellie determined that 80s music stood for trouble. Since the radio turned on when they were leaving, it's a whole foreshadowing of the crap they're about to encounter and the ride we're going to go on with them. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this! ❤️

    I'm not sold on Tess yet; she was such a badass in the game, so far, not so much in the show.
    I wasn't sure on Bella but once she said "Mother Fcuker" and the way she said it, I was sold then and there.
    A lot of the game dialogue was going through my head and some of it I was sad wasn't in there and then Joel said one of Tess's lines, so it tells me I've watched the play-throughs of the first TLOU and that things are switched up a bit :)

With the few meaningful and appreciated changes I wonder if these “flipped” scenes may have a significance in a big aspect of the story. I was really hyped for the show but brought my expectations down before the first episode because i wanted to keep an open mind about it and not constantly compare it. but it turned out really good. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season.

    I watched this episode while my neighbors were being evacuated due to flooding here in Cali. There was a national guard evacuation bus parked infront of my house! It was very surreal and immersive? 😭

    this is why you hire game directors to make shows about the specific game god neil druckmann is a genius the last of us i my favourite game and episode one is so perfect still tearing up about it now of how good it was

    I have to somewhat disagree with the perimeter guard analysis. I do agree that he delivered it well, but I really wish that they would have added "........but there's a child.......Yes Sir."

      When I first saw that scene I totally agreed with you. That line from the game hits hard and gives warning about what's going to happen. But now I've digested the scene I actually think there's some value in the subtlety of the build up of tension in the army dudes "yes sir" repetition. Both deliveries (tv show and game) are excellent imo.

    I hope theres a review of every episode from you. I don't subscribe to streaming sites but I plan on watching TLOU once all the episodes are out. I wanna watch each episode after watching your thoughts on it first though. Its not the kind of game I enjoy playing but I fucking love watching people play. People love the fuck out of this story and I get more enjoyment watching absolute die hard fans more than I would playing the game myself.

    this is so well summed up, and I totally agree with everything. even tho I knew exactly what was going to happen, I was still tense the whole way through, and the extra background on Sarah with the neighbor scenes and the acting from the actress were just spot on. bravo to the team involved with the show, literally blocking out time on sundays to watch new episodes as they come out!!

    Cant believe he didnt talk about Joel killing the guard guy to protect Ellie because he had the flashback of sara. and the expressions on Ellie's face as she watched him do that you could tell that in that moment she realized he must have been through some shit and Bella played that scene perfectly.

    did anyone else notice they changed the years around? in the game it starts in 2013 and had a 20 year time jump to 2033 but in the show it was 2003 with a 20 year time jump making it 2023, i assume the point was to make it line up with the current year ??

    I saw it with my girlfriend and we both have played the game, I played more and remember more than she does tho.
    !!SPOILER!!
    So when we came to the scene where she gives the watch to Joel, as a gift. I said the line she said before she said it, when Joel asked where she got the money from. And my gf just looked at me like "How?"

    one of the scenes that creeped me out the most was the one where sarah was at the neighbor’s house and the shot was focused on her with her back to the infected old woman. the old woman was out of focus, but you could see her silent spasms and contortions as the fungus was taking hold of her- fucking bone-chilling. really nice addition for the show 😅

    I loved the subversion of the drive through town. They extended it a bit with more turns so I was extra tense not knowing which turn was gonna result in the crash, THEN they had the car not hit them so I was even more uneasy not knowing what was going to happen to cause Sarah’s injury, only to then see the plane at that angle creeping up on them in the background growing that dread, then seeing it crash especially knowing that this now only takes place 2 years after 9/11… it was so good. Also funnily enough the first thing that made me tear up my first watch was when Sarah pulled out the Curtis & Viper 2 DVD.

    My dad who hasn't played the game found the sarah scenes in the beginning kinda boring, kinda slow, but for me it had such an intense feeling of dread, just bc you know what is about to happen and you get to know this girl a bit better and she's just plain good. She doesn't deserve what you know is about to happen. I enjoyed that they made a kinda prologue to where the game starts

  • @kalekaela

    That plane crash scene literally made me cry. It just shows the magnitude of the chaos and it was so crazy that it happened right behind them. I screamed “THAT DIDNT HAPPEN IN THE GAME!!” but mostly because I loved that change, the added depth and intensity.
