- Hi all! Today I'm setting up a new Mijello travel palette with my favourite gouache paints! I then test this out by heading outside to paint on location and show you how the palette held up! Can't wait to hear what you think and I hope you enjoy watching 😊 Katie x

If you sand the inside of the wells before you add the paint they won’t fall out of the well, at least that worked for me. Hope this helps. Also lovely art as always!

Art naturalist John Murr Laws recommends using an orphan sock cut to wear on your wrist to wipe your brush. I think it's a brilliant backup to have in your kit when you forget kitchen roll. I also like that I won't have to chase it down after a gust of wind. 😉

Love the palette Katie! I filled a Mijello palette back in mid feb and over five weeks later, they still haven't fully dried. I have four that have started to crack (interestingly, the sienna / umber paints) and twelve are still VERY gooey and wet. I didn't add anything to them, so am quite chuffed. 😍 My problem is that the palette is MUCH bigger than I expected so it won't be going to and about with me - it's about the same size as your's opened up! 🤯 Looking forward to more en plain air videos from you with your palette! 😎
Thanks so much Eve! Oooh that's good to know yours hasn't dried out yet! I think there must be some pigments that make things more prone to cracking, I'll see what happens and if it the glycerin has helped or not! Now I've bought this one I keep seeing those cute little square palettes everywhere, but I really like that this has space for mixing!
Love this so much! And I feel ya on filming yourself out in nature. I just did a video and it kept focusing on my hair instead of my sketchbook. lol.

The color pallet you choose seems perfect for you type of paintings 😊 Looks so peaceful to paint outside 💖 right now it’s pretty cold in Norway, but my goal for the spring/summer is trying drawing or painting outside 😄 your videos on this topic has inspired me to try it!

I'm happy to hear that the palette worked well for you. Apart from the running paint issue 😅 I rarely take my wet gouache palette on trips, because it's too messy. I'm still looking for the perfect travel setup and might consider the folio palette from Art Toolkit. I'm waiting on TJ's review of it though 😅

I’ve recently bought the mini stay wet gouache palette and I have a spray mix of glycerine, boiled water and surgical alcohol to keep it moist and mould free. I’m taking note of your colours and mix of brands. I had a really sticky Titanium White which doesn’t dry.
That spray mix sounds fantastic! I hadn't even thought to mix the other things into the water, what a good idea! Oh that white sounds annoying, the Pebeo brand I use for the white is very non-sticky!
I have the exact same palette for my gouache 😊 Have had it for years.

This was really interesting! My daughter bought me a tiny portable wooden palette, just big enough to put a small amount of paint into with the lid being used as a mixing area. I'm looking forward to trying out, so this video was perfect timing! 🧡

You surprised me by not filling all your palette wells. When I set up a new palette, sometimes I put two or three colors in the same well, side-by-side. I do it for colors like greens and yellows. I have some specialty yellows I like, but not enough to dedicate a whole well to them, and I have another well with three different greens that I use for mixing. Years ago I bought a bottle of glycerin, but never used it. Your video inspires me to try it.
Oooh that's a great idea! I've noticed my yellows getting a bit dirty now so I love the idea of having multiple yellows to use as 'mixing' colours. Thank you for sharing that!

I love plein air painting but always use watercolour - I haven’t yet ventured into the gouache palette for painting outside as I haven’t found the ideal palette for the paints. Thanks for the vegetable glycerin tip - how much did you put into each paint? Thank you for a lovely video - I am definitely a fine weather painter. ☺🙏
Thank you so much for watching! I did a couple of drops of vegetable glycerin per well, but I have to say they have dried up now! I think it took 2-3 weeks before they dried up though but something to bear in mind that it doesn't keep them wet for as long as I expected 😊
