- Assault Suit Leynos 2 (重装機兵レイノス2) is a 1997 run-and-gun shooter developed by NCS for the Sega Saturn. It is the sequel to Assault Suit Leynos (Target Earth) on the Genesis.

Give the Leynos remake a try. It's on Steam and PS4. Has elements from all the Assault Suit games. Very fun!

I wanted to redo it to try to get A-ranks on all the levels, but I can't figure out for the life of me what the conditions are to score A's in the early levels. I kept trying up until about three days before the Saturn's 22nd anniversary, and then I had to shift gears to start getting the translated videos out. I may come back to Leynos 2 eventually though.

A near-perfect game in my opinion. It'd be great if it has an arcade style score board.
There's gotta be a name for this type of mech sidescrollling/multidirectional shooting game. We've got Assault Suit Leynos/Target Earth, Assault Suit Valken/Cybernator, Metal Warriors, Front Mission: Gun Hazard, Wolf Fang... I'm sure there's others but that's enough for a sub-genre righter there.
Armed Hunter Gunhound EX is also really good. More on the arcade side of gameplay but it manages to be a unique experience. Very fast pace once you get the hang of it.

Bangcat As far as I know, it's just a PS4 exclusive sadly. Dracue, the company behind the new Leynos game, does have a similar 2D mech game on Steam already. It's called "Gunhound EX." It's 80% off for the next 24 hours. May want to check it out. :)

Oh believe me, I know. A PSP title that got a second chance at life with the return of mecha titles growing. Another similar to the style on steam is Gigantic Army and I nudged another company to put their tittle BAD Battle Armor Division on greenlight could use your voting to get it in.
I'm quite the fan of the style and actively seek out the likes. I'm also one of those people who know that Front Mission evolved wasn't the first to break away from turn based formula being that Front Mission's second game was actually also sharing developmental style with the Assault Suit games and to this day I think remains the longest in hours of play of it's kind.
Right now all I ask is as many of them get US launches as possible, be it PC or any of the current consoles or handhelds. I was happy to hear that the Leynos re imagining was taking a lil more time in development to incorporate a co op mode. I've been privy to some of the game play footage already and can tell you it's including some physics play like Intrusion 2, also on steam. I'm really looking forward to it.
+Bangcat I am 100% for the resurgence of these types of games. I have tried my best to play every one i can find. Leynos2 has the best art as far as I am concerned. Front Mission 2 Gunhazard is a nice, late SNES title with very similar gameplay and RPG elements. I would love to make a game like this.
If you find more feel free to share. The best modern one that made it west is Gunhound on STEAM. There are a couple others that are sort of similar, like the zero G combat salvage game of cryptark.
Bangcat I had a very odd one that i got for like 3 dollars from staples back in like, 1998. I think it was called Iron Blood? I remember being very underwhelmed by it but then again my PC was not the best. Just did a quick search and found out that its actually a Korean game with the KR title of "Interrupt" The game allowed you to pick from 2 different machines. The art seems to be knock offs of both the Assault Suit series, Armored Warriors and Power Dolls. The red mech plays like the assault suit games and the blue mech played more like the Genocide2 style of running ninja melee mech. I am actually very curious about this trend of early 90s mecha character action games that featured a huge mechanized vehicle that could only use a short range melee weapon. There are more of these games than you think. Genocide2 was ported to the Super Famicom and has rad box art.

Is the sequel also in the PS4? As far as I know a remake of the first game was released in the PS4, not the sequel.

For the video, I used SSF. Might work in Mednafen as well though. Definitely doesn't work in Yabause.

I swear, why can't we get games like this in the United States, filled with mecha and giant robots? We never get Super Robot Taisen, We never get this game or any other mecha game that comes out of Japan. So here is the question- Does Japan think we are a bunch of stupid idiots for only liking cartoons, and superheroes instead of anime and mecha?

Mechas are such a huge part of Japanese fiction while in America Its the same for Superheroes. Not many mecha games are available in the U.S. due to the fact that they wouldn't even sell well. It doesnt make one better than the other.
Well it's 5 years later but it's not Japan's fault, it's the American companies' fault. They decide what gets ported here. But I agree that we need more mecha games.

No matter how many times I play, I can't seem to earn better ranks for better weapons. Can I replay missions after clearing the game to earn weapons? This is the SEGA Saturn version (no emulator) by the way.
It's all about limiting the damage you take. And, yes, you can do subsequent playthroughs with all the weapons and mechs you acquired on your last playthrough.

There's also a a game called ''Gigantic Army'' for PC,which is very similar to Cybernator.According to the devs,they took direct inspiration for it. It's on Steam for 5,99 fun little game.

peterpansyndrome94 I use SSF 0.12 beta R3 (there is a newer version, but it's buggy) to emulate the games and OBS to record them. SSF does not scale the internal resolution, but the games are being recorded at 1080p.

Well it would still have some stiff competition with the PSX, but if more of the Japanese library had been released in the West it could have given gamers who were not into the early 3D console games at the time alternatives.
Somehow I’ve come to the same conclusion, though also with some cultural factors involved, maybe we were just not ready in the west for the Saturn awesomeness.
@@TheMinchio I think at the time a lot of Sega people probably thought that really Japanese favorite genres and series simply would not sell in the West like for example the fantasy SRPGs
As I mentioned in my own post. Sega probably also thought that it wasn't worth it to bring most of the 2D games to the West, probably convinced that what the audience wanted most were 3D games.
@@TheDutchGhost Yes, executives in the west didn’t see a market for it, but also the video game audience was less mature in the west, plus the cultural differences (the Saturn games can be very Japanese oriented), and maybe the west was not ready for it back then, from the top executives chain all the way down to the final consumers.

But we are ready now and a lot of Saturn games are still worth playing, yet no official translations and ports are announced.
I think costs and return probably plays a big role and maybe also some of the companies that originally made/published these games no longer being around.
But it is still disappointing that we still can't play these games.

+TITAN-UP FX (TUFX) The original Assault Suit Leynos is Target Earth. Leynos 2 probably would have been called Target Earth 2 had it come out in the West. Assault Suits Valken (Cybernator) was spun off from the Leynos series. It's not a sequel.

@@SaturnMemories Actually Assault Suit Valken is a prequel to Assault Suit Leynos, taking place around a decade before the events of ASL.

It's part of the same series. Valken is a prequel to Leynos.
Do you need to understand Japanese to play this?
Nick Chandra Not really. The menus are pretty self-explanatory (e.g., MG is a machine gun, MSL is a missile launcher, NPM stands for napalm which is your flamethrower, etc.). It's a very accessible import for someone not familiar with Japanese. If you do get stuck, you can either refer to this video or consult the helpful FAQ on GameFAQs. Happy gaming!
