Good video Alf. Its also good to point out that the SAE pigtails for the battery charger have a 7.5amp fuse. A blown fuse will not allow the trickle charger to work. Check the 7.5amp fuse before blaming the battery or charger. Some fuses are located inline on the positive side of the charger cable next to the positive battery pole. Newer bikes that come with the SAE tender cable from the dealer have the 7.5amp fuse located in the main fuse compartment.
I have a 2018 Fat Bob 114 and had to replace my battery last week. I currently ride once a week (Sat or Sun) and I am thinking I should put the trickle charger on when I return from my ride and leave it on until my next weekend charge.
What if you need a jump start? Where can you attach jumper cables without having to remove the battery, and don't have a pigtail? I can't see the battery on this video.
Over winter i keep mine for most of the time on the charger from HD,It keeps it fresh batteries are expensive. Yes from HD it has a repair mode.I must also say put some additive in the " full tank" got the wheels of the deck, put a little more air in ,then a breathable cover and in the gararge it stays , till at least 2 days over 10 C and no salt. Thanx Alf yes usefull always good to know the reasons behind the tech.
Hi, my sportster battery is low due to not ride about 2 month i think.. is it okay for me to charge it.. cuz it decrease one bar from full.. does it affect the rectifier? Will it affect the battery health? Thank you sir
Yes it will be fine. If you have a main fuse then pull that first but otherwise it will be fine to charge again. If you are totally unsure then pull the battery from the bike and charge it separately. If your battery is old you may need a new one or use the repair function on your charger if you have one. Cheers
One burning question i do have i am thinking of getting the sissy bar and luggage rack from craftride, but my concern is the weight limit for the said piece? plus the thin side plates with only four imbus screws holding siissy bar and luggage rack together !
My Sportglide is on the Harley trickle charger 24/7 when I'm not riding it. Never any problems with charger or the battery cranking power in the 10 months I have owned the bike from new. Just a question Alf. Even if you have the trickle charger on over say a few weeks or more, would there be any benefit from occasionally starting the bike & running it for a few minutes in the garage just for the purpose of getting the oil flowing through the motor to keep everything lubricated? Cheers 😊👍
Keep it plugged in always even if you ride everyday. It does no harm to the battery. A good charger/maintainer knows when the battery needs or does not need a charge.
Great Video Rev, I think this subject has always been a bit of a grey area, what you should exactly do with the battery? I plug my bikes in every few weeks on and off....? Seems to work. ?
I was at my HD-dealer yesterday and they recommend the Tecmate Optimate (4 Dual at least) for a Sport Glide. Don't bother buying the HD-charger as it is made by Tecmate!
Terrible title....in the future please get to the point and quit the blah blah blah for the first 5 minutes...Thanks though, I do appreciate the information once I fast forwarded to the pertinent.
Thanks for watching. Let me know what you think in the comments below. More videos like this here: ruclips.net/p/PLmgCmljtdCzWrLg62oZxo0laIsmq4j67P
I have a 2009 Harley sportster 1200 , if I don’t ride it for 3 days the battery dies . The battery is 1 year old . What do you think it is ?

Yes that would probably help for sure. cheers
Any comments on AGM?
Hi, using Optimate 5 all winter and from time to time in summer. What do you think about new Harley lithium batteries?
Haven’t had the pleasure as yet but apart from overheating, they should be fine

I don’t see any harm in that but better still go ride it on a dry day to give it a good airing. Cheers
RevelatorAlf
Ok cool, thanks Alf. Cheers.👍
Bundy Bear Better to ride the bike and make sure get oil/engine to around operation temperature for "burn off " condensation
Thank you very helpful
Cheers
Thanks Alf. Very usefull. Can it be pluged in for weeks/months without being unplugged? (All winther)

Great advice. Thx
You're welcome. Cheers
Should say how to charge on tender(not just charge the battery). I need to know from a battery charger pov.

Yep any charger with the correct performance works well enough
