With enough time you'll start remembering more than one dream a night. You can also use it to look for dream signs (recurring themes and events) and using this along side reality checks is the best practice for lucid dreaming. Meditation can also help allot
I have been lucid dreaming for a year now and can only say that it is really exhausting. I often wake up with swollen eyes and find myself lethargic and tired troughout the day. Therefore, I have, naturally, tried to stop, but that's actually way harder than it sounds. Once I notice I am in a dream I just want to create a new story, a diffrent reality. It is fun. So I am constantly debating wheter I should stop or not.

You may or may not have some control but this doesn't have anything to do with being lucid. Dream control is another skill you practice after lucidity. Big misconception
