I found that it wasn't the feed lips causing the jams. If I slowly push the loaded rounds forward, the case mouth was catching on the front of the magazine. Which I believe was causing the round to pop up over the chamber and jam. I took a Dremel and relieved the front of the mag just enough to clear the case mouth, and wow, no more jams.

Apparently there’s 2 ribs in the front of a pmag. If you remove them then 350 legend will run fine. 350 legend is slightly wider and longer if I’m not mistaken. Like the base of 5.56 is .36 and 350 legend is .39 but yeah you need to remove the ribs from the magazine.

me too, I find bending the feed lips up *slightly* helped in my stock mag, the first 4 rounds sit funny, but feeds flawless now. thats a standby for old 7.62 mags
also took a felt dremel wheel with polishing compound and hit the bolt face, especially the bottom
helps the end of the round slide smoothly up across the bolt face and align onto the extractor then into battery.
last remove the extractor from the bolt and put the o-ring into your spare parts, it helps with the new stiffness, and believe me mine still hucks the casings 20 feet

I love the 350 Legend, brilliant little cartridge in my opinion. I built two 350 Legend ARs for shooting hogs here in Texas, a 12.5" pistol and 16" rifle. The only time I had any trouble with ammo was using the 145 grain FMJ, all other ammo worked fine. I use C Products Defense/Duramag magazines and mostly shoot the 150 grain Winchester Deer Season XP, but I have used Winchester and Federal 180 grainers without issue as well. Keep your chamber clean, the straight wall case with a slight taper doesn't take as much dirt or sand to mess with chambering. Also, there is another cartridge that I love that uses the same 5.56 bolt, the 300 Ham'r from Wilson Combat, great little round for varmints, deer and hogs. Thanks for the video.

350 won't chamber correctly if it gets slightly dirty? I shot mine rapidly with a 20 round mag. First mag used cycled perfectly without issues, second magazine would jam every 5 to 6 rounds. Was it the magazine or the chamber? 🤔

@@joesashiify I was just saying the slightly tapered straight wall cases like the 350 Legend don't take as much of a dirty or gritty chamber to induce chambering issues as it does with the bottleneck cartridges like 5.56. I have a Ruger AR and also use only C-products duramags. Early on I had trouble with the original 5 Rd mag and one of the 10 round mags I found local. I found small discrepancies in the height of the front of the mag body in relation to the top surface of the follower. In those 2 mag only. So I relieved them just slightly with a Dremel and a half round needle file. Gun has been 100% reliable since and it's just over 2000 rounds in now. There were small dents at the case mouth of every round that failed to feed very hard to notice but you could feel them with your nail. I have over a dozen 20 rounders and these are all lower in the area I addressed. So I suspect they found this issue early on and addressed it.

The 350 Legend is still a relatively new cartridge, so I would not fault the magazine makers if an alternate cartridge in a rifle designed for .223 has issues.
I had to do some magazine tuning on my 7.62*39 AR to get it to work properly. I bought C-Products mags which (According to the internet.) are the best for 7.62*39 but still had to grind down the front of the magazine so that the case neck did not catch, flatten the rib at the front of the feed lips so that the rim did not catch and open the front of the feed lips; those mods made my Russian Collusion AR run flawlessly.

This cartridge will reload with.357 also. Winchester designed it for that. Just cut your powder charges back a grain or two to keep pressure at acceptable levels and be very observant of pressure signs. Some have barrels custom chambered barrels with a bore designed for .358 bullets. CMMG mags work the best. The only bullets mine fails to feed 100% are those flat nose 125g xtp hollow points or bullets with the same profile. And even then only the first one of a full stack and not always.

It all depends on the chamber throat. A quick way to check is to take a fired case and see if a .357" bullet will slip in easily. If it doesn't, your gun won't handle the .357" bullets.

    • @minilathemayhem
      @minilathemayhem 10 месяцев назад +3

@@demsrchildabusers7959 If your rifle can't chamber a .357" projectile and is chambered for .350 legend, it's out of spec. The specification explicitly states that the projectile of .350 legend is between .354" and .357" in diameter, and that there's a throat of between .357" and .3575". The only time I figure that you might find a rifle that can't chamber a .357" projectile is if the projectile was actually oversized, OR if the rifle was made before the SAAMI spec. The .357" came about during the later stages of development due to Ohio having a rule for hunting that a projectile has to be at least .357" in diameter. Winchester got around by saying the projectile has to be .357" with a -.0030" tolerance, thus allowing between .354" and .357", conforming to the requirements of Ohio's hunting laws.

It’s devastating on deer. And very lite recoil. What I do to help the feeding issues is I’ll use some G 96 oil and after I load the magazine up, I’ll put one littel squirt on the “ neck “ of the round or lack there of. And that really helps the reliability of the feeding. Basically making my own lubed round. I’m hunting in Missouri so I don’t need to worry about the oil freezing up.

I had the exact same thing happen in 2 ar uppers in 350 legend and if I were to run my Ruger American bolt action fast. Adjusting the feed ramps on the barrel on one of the AR uppers did help but bumping up and out the first front quarter of the feed lips of the mags solved everything. What I found was needing to happen was the shell needed to exit the magazine a touch earlier then for the blackout for 556 simply bc the straight wall design requires it to enter the chamber as straight in as possible. The 556 and 300 blk doesn’t have this issue bc the straight portion of the shell has already passed the feed lips to the point where the shell will pop up and inline with the chamber. This even drastically improved the sluggish feeling of my Ruger American ranch as well.

You had muzzle energy available already. Combine that with the higher momentum and you basically have a round that has superior terminal ballistics, until it doesn't due to low ballistic coefficient and cross sectional density. Inside 100 yards it's straight up superior. Although .300blk 110gr might give it a run for its money.

It's like Winchester management doesn't want to admit they were wrong when they release the "350 Legend" with an actual .355 bullet (not truly a .357) in a case with a 5.56 head rim diameter, when they should have released a 358 Legend based on the 6.8 head case. Now it seems as though they have skipped over the obvious and went with something for the hipsters. The lack of good thick jacketed soft point 40 cal (10mm) bullets in the market, makes it difficult for reloads. I have an old 1873 Winchester that belonged to my great great uncle, chambered in 38-40 and only have about seventy-five 200 grain soft point bullets left for it. For target and plinking I am stuck with cast lead or hollow point.

I have 2 350 Legends, one an AR and the second an Encore. 0 problems in the AR and 100% reliability (but I built the upper using an Aero Precision XL upper which has an enlarged ejection port for larger straight walled rounds, a Shaw Custom barrel with feed ramp designed for the 350, and CMC mags with the modification already done). Also has an 18" barrel so velocity is a little better, much better with handloads. Found a load with the 165 FTX that shoots 0.259" to 0.5" groups at 50 yards when I do my job right. The Encore has an MGM Custom 20" barrel and a slightly tighter chamber. Can't shoot the same loads as the AR as the pressure gets pretty high. Shoots great groups with 2 grains less of the same powder though. Still a shame I can't use the same load for both. Well, I could I guess if I dropped the charge on the AR but the groups open up a bit. Love the round and in Michigan the majority of deer are shot at 60 yards and under so the Legend is perfect. If your going to shoot farther (150 yards is the limit IMO for this round) the Winchester 150's might be the ticket.

You could get your high speed to see your 350 legend jams and see if something else is the issue. Sounds like some teething the new round still has to go through.
I was piqued on 350 legend with the idea to reload cheaper 9mm ammo into used .223 shells for plinking with, until i saw how much longer and heavier the bullets for it are compared to usual 9mm fare.
Would be an interesting (memey) video to load up 350 Legend with Lehigh 68 grain extreme defenders and see how (un)speedy, (in)effective, (in)accurate and (un)reliable they are vs Hornady 68 grain BTHP loaded 5.56 rounds.

CMMG mags, a H2 buffer and stay away from the 170 gr Hornady American whitetail (jam city in the AR platform) good in the bolt guns such as the Ruger American or Mossberg. Go to any Winchester or Federal round and wallah. My way any way and it has worked for me. Getting ready to test other ammos. As usual the bolt guns are more accurate overall.

First let's start off with I've been hunting with the 450 BM for over 12 years, started in the AR platform now a Ruger American and being I'm a reloader using a bolt gun a 250gr XTP at 2600fps will drop just about anything out to 250 yards. The problem comes in when you have a young or recoil sensitive shooter, that's where the 350L shines. Not a powerhouse it does match or slightly better a 30/30 and that cartridge has taken more than it's share of whitetails. Second, I do own a Ruger American in 350L, I load it with a either a 147gr FMJ 9mm bullet or one of my 158gr home cast and powder coated 357FP bullets resized to .356" and pushed by a good charge of Unique. Those cast rounds cost about a dime each and for a young person learning to shoot a bucket of ammo and a lot of practice works best, ask any of my 4 grandchildren. Now I'm waiting for a Flightlite AR lever action lower to show up. I have a 18" 350L upper waiting for it. Imagine that lever action AR with 30 rounds of 170gr spitzer ammo on tap or just the practice rounds. There wouldn't be a water filled beer can safe anywhere.

I love your videos. Awesome presentation and awesome hard data/facts. All-around AWESOME content. Stop with the sand, OR . . . . OR . . . .do varying thicknesses of sand. Start at maybe1" or 2" thick and move up to 6". Just an idea. My true purpose today thougj was to reach out to ask if you could find some way to shoot an Ash(type of wood)baseball bat lengthwise? With the bat oriented horizontally with the thick end facing the shooter and the handle fixed hard against something sturdy. I feel like this test should be of centerfire rifle cartridges. As many as possible that bring 1000 ft/lbs of muzzle energy minimum. Don't fart around with .22lr, at least not until the bitter end when all others have been tested and it's like "might as well". Great stuff, keep it up!

I'm an old guy, worn out shoulder joints. I recently fired a 350 legend carbine twice, and that was kinda my limit. I can fire 30-50 rounds of 223 at a trip to the range with less impact on my shoulder and the next couple night's sleep.
Yah, I've stepped down in shotgun too. But last time out I hit about 50% of my clays with a 410, so it ain't as bad as it could be.
Another reason that wars are mostly fought by younger guys.

Even if your state doesn't require straight wall, often times there is a minimum caliber requirement. Here in my state it needs to be .25 or larger so 5.56 isn't legal to hunt with. The 350 Legend is just a barrel change rather than barrel, bolt, gas block, carrier, mags, etc.

Wish manufacturers would offer more traditional spitzer/boat tail bullets for it though. This could be a real thumper if done right. I would like to see someone load the 65 grain extreme defender solid copper bullet used in the underwood .380 & .357 sig into a 350 legend case.... If my math is right It would be doing 4200+ fps from a 16" barrel. Just devastating.

I think the feed problem is due to the feed ramps on the back of the barrel. I have two BCA 350 legend uppers with the exact same barrel but one is a side charger with one solid feed ramp the other is a rear charger with a M4 style feed ramp and the specs state it has 300 blackout feed ramps. I have run both of these uppers on the same lower with the same 350 Legend magazine, I had absolutely no issues with the solid ramp and I've have had a few issues with the 300 blackout split ramp. Why would you want to try to run a 35 caliber bullet up a 30 caliber ramp? I had a similar problem on a 7.62 x39 AR upper, turning the split ramp into one big ramp fix the problem.

I built my upper out of assorted "AR Stoner" parts (Midway USA budget brand) and had the same feed issues. The barrel extension seemed to have the 30 cal ramps but the receiver still had the little 5.56 pre-ramps. I didn't grind it to a single ramp but there wasn't much of a divider left when I got it working. I've never had to modify any magazines.

The reason they didn’t go with a 358 bore is because they would have to shorten the case which would make it not legal for hunting in restricted hunting zones that require a straight wall cartridge, that’s why the made to the round to begin with so it makes no sense to go a tiny bit bigger for more reloading variety on a ammo that’s already cheap

Thanks for the video! I'm glad that I'm not the only one that thinks that the name of the 350 Legend is really dumb. And, after watching this video, the dumb level went even higher knowing that the bullet diameter is .355, at least from a reloading standpoint. However, the cartridge does intrigue me a bit, enough to make me consider a Ruger Scout Rifle in that caliber.

Another thing to consider is actually the feed ramps of the barrel. Its common knowledge 7.62 does similar in ar profile. Its due to feed ramps m4 or not are for a 5.56 bullet to slide over. So grab a dremel and carefully reduce steep angle and with. Had my 7.62 with issue and feed issues stopped after the change.
