  • In this video, I show you a demonstration of how I created my latest acrylic painting, "Frosty Morning", of a European Robin.
I painted this on a 5" x 7" Ampersand Gessobord Panel using Liquitex Basics and System 3 acrylics.

Helpful to watch, thanks. I draw portraits of people usually, but someone commissioned me to paint birds, and although I've done them before, because it's a commission, I end up freaking out that it's not good enough. :D So really useful to watch how you layer up the colours for the feathers. Feel confident about it now. Thank you!

Thank you very much! My current piece is a large coloured pencil one, so it's taking a while to complete, but I will have the video here once it's done!

Hi there. Unfortunately I don't remember the exact colours I used - I generally make mixtures consisting of a few different colours and try out my mixtures on a scrap piece of paper until I get close to what I want. In this case, my mixtures for both the background and the branch probably included various proportions of Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber and Titanium White, but I may have thrown in some other colours as well to get to what I wanted. I don't use a massive palette of core colours when working in acrylics, and the blue, brown and white I mentioned above are almost always staples for me when painting wildlife. The best advice I can give is to experiment with colour mixing yourself to find out what works best for you!

Michelle Cashmore Art Thank you so much for your message. Great advice! I'll give it a try :) I'll get those colours for sure. And what other colours would you recommend as a beginner? I never know what to choose and the 3 basics usually give me the same type of look.. (Last question!)
      Thank you~

For nature and wildlife, I also use a lot of yellow ochre (sometimes called yellow oxide), burnt sienna, chromium oxide green and sometimes ivory black (although I don't use this as much as I mostly like to mix my blacks from ultramarine/burnt umber). Unbleached titanium white is a nice creamy, natural colour too. It's good to have the primaries as well, as you can mix a lot of other colours from those.
In all honesty though, white, black, the primaries and a few of the natural earthy colours will get you a long way, and then you can add more colours to those as you find them useful.

Add some music to the mute scenes, it improves the videos :)

Jumpscare Rodent no! Music is just annoying on a video, just listen to your own music

useful video, thanks, but I don't know -if you have such an accent or your speech is unclear, because I could barely understand what you were saying..
