An update on Fenya - she has improved overnight!

  • FENYA is a fighter! We have positive feedback this morning💚.
She made it through the night! Her strength slowly gained with her body seeming to have reacted well to the transfusion and fluids she received. So much so, she chased after Joshua a bit earlier! She drank and ate well and slept a bit too, mostly standing up.
Her glucose levels were very low - so we have also been focusing on that, which is helping get her energy up. Yesterday she could hardly lift her head and she was very cold. Today she is better, and we are very relieved.
We knew that her albumen levels were low which blood tests revealed (as mentioned in previous updates), - however, we had been waiting for her strength and weight to increase, to be able to take the sedation. In her condition yesterday turning so weak, we had to make that decision to do it or we could lose her. Fortunately, so far, it was the right decision. Though she is still very weak overall. It is a blessing to be able to have the blood of an elephant accessible to be able to assist in an emergency. We will do a full blog update about that process tomorrow, and hopefully, answer all the questions you may have then.
While we started sedating her we took the opportunity to move her to Khanyisa's nursery, which has a fenced area with a garden that she can now get some sunshine and enjoy the grass and sand. We have gained her trust enough now to be able to approach her in that area now, without the divisions that we had in the other nursery, which were essential for everyone's safety. Though we still have to keep our guard, as you will see by a clip where she was chasing Joshua. She could hurt a carer, and their safety is paramount, so we are taking it in stages.
She has taken the bottle from the carers and allowed Adine to clean her wounds. This is a big step in the right direction, without the divisions we had previously until now. She has sanded herself which is great. Of course, this is not ideal for her wounds, but her energy and keeping her going is more important right now.
Her dung looks great which is also positive after the procedure, and she is urinating. We are relieved she is doing okay - but we have to remember just how fragile baby elephants are, and having additional emotional and physical trauma has an immense impact on them, and their conditions can change so quickly.
It is great to see her outside now and in the warmth of the morning sun. We will keep you updated.
Thank you so much to Doc Rogers and the Provet team as well as our carers for just being so incredible!
Thank you from all of us at HERD to our followers, for your love and support, and immense concern for Fenya. It is really so so heartwarming to feel all the love and prayers from all around the world. Thank you x
Thank you to the Whimsical Collection for the blanket previously sent for Khanyisa, Fenya has it on her today 😀This is to regulate her temperature in cooler mornings.

I will sleep well tonight knowing Fenya is doing much better. You can see she is weak, but like Khanyisa there is the will to live. It is good she is somewhat more trusting. However, while her wild streak remains I.e. Joshua; she still understood all are trying to help & she allowed her wounds to be cleaned. These animals are amazing, but all at Herd are even more so. God bless! Love for all at Herd & most especially towards Fenya & of course Khanyasi. These two young Ellie's have taught me much. Continued prayers for all! Yay!!!! Great news!!!! What had happened? Much thanks to everyone there and the veterinarian for great job!!!
Fenya looks weak. Possibly now that she is aware she is being fed and protected all that previous pent up stress is leaving her mind and body making her appear weak.
I was thinking she was going to act out. Like you wrote at the end about all the trauma she went through. Also the grief. Oftentimes trauma and grief turns to anger like stress does. The survivors have stages to go through to heal inside and out. I am so glad she is with you to help Fenya through it! I find it intriguing the difference between a 4 month old (sweet Khanysa) rescue & a 2,5 yo rescue (Fenya). Fenya had so much more time & elle awareness & teaching from momma & family that her healthy knowledge of who/what to be wary of is strong. Seems logical for her to sceptically accept the goodness & love from this group of humans vs while so traumatized by those who brought harm to her & deprived her of mother & family. Delighted to see her out & about in the fresh air & garden. I am still reading comments to discover cause of her emergency transfusions overnight. Did Dr. Roger's sew together her right, torn ear? I know - 1st things 1st. Bless all for your efforts to love & heal all things great & small on planet Earth. I am tickled to watch her curiosity about Lammie.

That smart strong girl well remembers when being outside meant she was ensnared and suffered horribly. It takes tincture of time to crowd out the old painful memories with the new safe loving ones. When I was younger and we had many kinds of farm animals including horse stables I also took on several rescued horses and mammoth donkeys, each of them abused and neglected. The struggles were real and it would be many months of creative problem solving for us to help them recover (horrible hooves were particularly challenging along with behavior resulting from total lack of hoof care) , but eventually they all became healthy and good citizens on our farm and for new adopting families. You have my love, understanding, and respect for what you are all doing. It is a team sport for sure. I noticed that when Adine was first bonding with Fenya, in one scene we would see Adine in the stall and then instantly as Fenya approached Adine would appear on the other side of the stall walls. Oh I well remember taking those flying leaps to remain safe while working with my big needy animals who were large and lacking in social skills. I think there should be an olympic sport for quickly retreating from large animals! I also had to deal with low glucose and fluid levels in my animals, one trick to quickly raise the glucose level enough so the animal has the strength to stand or even drink is to take corn syrup (karo syrup here in the US) and wipe it all over the animal’s lips and mouth as much as possible. That works quickly to get sugar into the animal while the transfusions, oral tubed fluids, and oral fluids have a chance to really treat the underlying nutritional problem. I learned that trick from an 85 yr old vet. It works well for weak babies of all kinds as well as the older animals and none of them objected to the taste.

So happy and relieved to see our precious Fenya! I love her very much and am thrilled she has so many praying followers! Thank you everyone for your loving support. It is such a shame what this girl has already endured in her young life. Thank you HERD team for your compassionate care. I will send more "apple" money soon! Take great care of our baby! Love, Flo from Missouri.

The will to live and survive is strong in Fenya, she's moving like I was when recovering from COVID-19, baby steps. I would suggest before letting her out, water down the sand so she won't be able to throw it onto her wounds. Shoutout to everyone involved in saving this beautiful strong baby!

Thank you Lord. She has a hard battle ahead. She was so starved for milk in the wild. We must all continue to bind together as Fenya's prayer chain with ribbons of love from around the world. The sun will be healing for her. Hopefully getting her albumin and red cell count up will help boost her. Love and hugs with healing prayers. Thank you for update. Thank you to the carers, doctor and ALL of HERD for you dedication.

So glad Starvos is here. Joshua had the milk bottle...Fenya wants it and that's a great motivator for her to run after it...lol. Adine cleaning her wounds outside big step. First time on concrete and new surroundings maybe, which are not new for staff but are strange to a wild ellie. Awe...😍 your team is brave to continue to show love 💘 as she heals in stages. Sending strength to you all from Colorado!!!!

Thank you Lord for seeing Fenya through the night and allowing her to be in the hands of such angels on earth. I know it is probably very scary and dangerous to be chased by a large animal like Fenya, but it made me laugh and cry (tears of happiness) at the same time to see her chasing Joshua and him moving swiftly around that yard. I believe she was after more milk.

A little wobbly, but still standing. Even chasing Joshua a little bit. Smiling. Thank you HERD for all the work you do to help these animals. Seems two steps forward, one back at the moment. Continued prayers for Fenya on her road to recovery.

Praise be to God, the loving care of ALL at HERD and Dr. Rogers and team! Tears of relief here. Beautiful, cautious trust on little Fenya's part in her new yard. With no separation...that's part of why she's a survivor! I know her situation is still tenuous, but it is wonderful to see her eating and drinking and taking her bottle. So glad to see her able to be outside. Fenya feels the love...Prayers continue to flow for her continued recovery.

Glad Fenya is feeling better . I've noticed that khanysia crosses her front leg when she eats . When Fenya first came out I noticed she crossed her back legs when she was eating . It's going to be good to them eating together with their legs crossed . I know that will take time to happen

Looks like Joshua got his morning exercise run, compliments of Fenya. Love it that Fenya showed a glimpse of her personality. Perhaps she was demanding another bottle of milk and thought there was more in that bottle Joshua had in his hand? Nice progress Team HERD, with Fenya's care.🤗🥰💐

She was after the fruit/vegetable Joshua picked from the trough. And then later the milk bottle. Baby-girl seems to have appetite left!
Reading the video description... I've been prepared all the time for the case that her health might fail her. Sometimes the stress from losing mom is enough for health failure and death. Things are looking brighter today though!

Her rainbow coat of many colours will keep her safe as Khanyisa's did for her. Great steps forward... even if she didn't like being approached from behind! She's come so far in such a short time especially as she was older when she arrived. Lovely to see she's got her elephant instincts working!
