These videos are so thorough and clear. Armed with these videos, I felt confident enough to repair the set button and control dial on my 60d. The 'screw templates' you prepared were awesome, and your instructions were perfect. Thank you so much for making your expertise available.
Absolutely agree with all you've said. It's amazing to me that we can find such high quality instructional videos like this to repair our own things now. Out of curiosity, what exactly was the problem with your scroll wheel? Mine mostly works but every 3rd or 4th "click" doesn't register. It can be pretty frustrating when I need to make a few quick adjustments for an action shot. I'm thinking following these videos will solve my problem, but naturally I'm a bit nervous about getting this deep in to my camera if it's not even going to solve the problem. It seems like the brushes aren't connecting on a few of the plates so I think a good clean will solve the issue.
Cause and effect are sometimes hard to determine. While I have subjected my 60D to the spray of the ocean and the mist of waterfalls, I suspect it was a drop of my forehead sweat that hit the set button and pooled there that caused some kind of short. I noticed the drop and wiped it away, but minutes later, while setting up my next shot, I realized I couldn’t move the focus box in live-view. Then I discovered when looking at the menu, I couldn’t move up and down through the options, or get the set button to work. Back in live- view, I desperately tried to get the focus box centered on my subject, and for a second, I thought it had started to work again, but then, as if it had a mind of its own, it started moving in the opposite direction and pegged itself against the left side of the LCD screen. I also discovered that if I tried to review images, they would flash automatically in reverse, non-stop, as if I was holding down the eight-way toggle switch to the left. In short, the reset button and toggle switch were malfunctioning. I took steps to dry out the camera. I had it wrapped in a heating pad at low heat. Sometimes, after repeatedly pressing the eight-way toggle button in all directions for several minutes at a time, it would sporadically begin to function again, first the left bank, then the top and bottom ones, and rarely the right-most button - as if I was somehow warming it up, or as if I was breaking away the postulated salt crystals. This gave me brief moments of hope. I’d put the camera away for some more drying time and try again later. But then the button wouldn’t work at all. I could get around not using live-view, but I couldn’t get by not being able to move through menu panels, especially without a functioning set button. Additionally, whatever the short was, it would drain the battery overnight. My internet searches suggested that others had similar problems with the set button/toggle switch, and at some point, I found the link for this video series. Ebay was selling just the set-button toggle switch for 25 bucks, but these were re-conditioned parts, from China, and the seller wasn’t available for a month. Canon sells the whole back camera cover (new) for a little over 40 bucks. The directions were so clear. I decided it was something I could do. The print-outs for the screws are genius. The only thing that surprised me was that the ribbon cable for the reset button-well, I had to fold mine over - otherwise, the whole process was exactly as presented in the video. Since the repair, my camera is working flawlessly.
gracias! me aclaraste muchas dudas, tengo una samsung nx3000 q le falla el dial. y bueno tenia miedo desarmarla para limpiar el dial, con tu video guiándome, lo hare !! gracias
Can I ask you about the rubber grip? Do you reuse the rubber grip after you take it off to split the outer plastic body? Or do you use new ones? What do you use if necessary to hold down some slight loose edges?
I always reuse the grips. And, so far I've never had to re-glue them at all. The original sticky glue that is on them has always been sticky enough to hold them when I put the grips back on. A general purpose contact glue should work fine if you need to re-glue them though.
I dropped my camera at the back base of it and now the entire back panel controls no longer function. What do you think I might need to replace to fix this? LCD screen is fine.
It's possible that the impact just simply knocked the flat ribbon cable that comes from the back cover loose from the connector on the main board. That's an easy fix if it is. And that would also explain why all of the controls quit working. If that's not the problem, the the flat ribbon cable could have been damaged, or the main board. Though, if the back cover did not actually break or crack from the impact, then I would doubt that is the problem. You won't really know until you open it up though to see. Let me know what you find.
Looks like the Q button still works. I'll open her up next week and see what's happening. Does the lock button also lock the Q button? If not, then I'm thinking the lock button is permanently engaged somehow. Would be nice just to reattach some loose wiring and it work again. I'll update with results.
I have to ask because my searches have come up dry. I have a 6D and this wheel is completely non responsive. The rest of the camera works fine. Is it most likely the contacts, or the flex cable?
Yes, it could be that the contacts in the wheel control are defective or just dirty, or that a flat ribbon cable is not seated properly in it's connector. There are many things that could effect it, so It's really hard to say. But coincidentally , I recently have been helping someone that has a 60D, who was having the exact same problem. They had even purchased two back covers for the camera which included the wheel and buttons, and it still didn't help out. They had pretty much given up trying to fix it when they stumbled onto something that seems to have fixed it for them. They plugged a remote shutter release into the plug on the side of the camera, and then after they unplugged it they noticed that the wheel control was working again. I don't know if that had anything to do with it at all, but they said it's still working for them. Again, this was on a 60D, and not a 6D, but if you can't find an obvious reason for the wheel not working it's something that you could try. I'd sure be curious to find out it that fixes it for you. -Bob
Thanks Rob! I won't know until I open it, because the guy who gave it to me is pretty abusive on his gear, I do suspect something has gone awry like water getting in and corroding connections or something
Wow..descriptive video. I need your help though. Does anyone knows where i can buy the set button for Canon 60d? I find it hard to find online any suggestions? Any suggestions as to what the problem is or is it definetely the set button and needs change??

Thank you very much. Very helping me.
Is the set button assembly swap the same as the 6D?

Wow brilliant man! Thanks mate!
Hello. My thumb dial is really hard to move. I think a drink was spilled on it. Do you think opening it an cleaning it like this will fix?
And mine is a 6d. How similar would these instructions be for a 6d? Thanks again

Robert Hosea thanks a lot! I love your page!
Thanks Francis. And you're welcome!
I remember early in the 60d run there were complaints of people saying that the grips stretched and fell off. Luckily I’ve not had that. Thanks buddy.

The buttons on my canon eos rebel is not working any more can it be fix?
I'm sure that it can be fixed Maria. Are the buttons that are not working on top of the camera, or on the backside?
