Wow! This reporter is a find! So happy to make his acquaintance. I checked out his wonderful website and I look forward to hearing more from him. Great interview, Chef AJ and Steve Hendricks! Thank you so much!🙏💪🌹
i’ve been doing Dr. Fuhrman’s nutritarian vegan diet (100% lifelong commitment) plus OMAD (lunch) for the last 98 days… i’ve lost 47 lbs… zero hunger… my high blood pressure is gone… my digestion is perfect… my skin is beautiful… i’m 56 years old and i’m planning on living until i’m 110+ :)
What a wonderful person!!❤ Intelligent, articulate, kindhearted … loved listening to him!! Would have liked to hear more about his own experience, but I’ll just have to get the book!🙌🏼 Thank you both for this excellent gift.🙏🏻❤️
This guy is brilliant! I am so glad to have come across him and have just ordered his book. Thank you, Chef AJ for bringing such fabulous people our way!
I’ve been trying to find this video. Okay. THIS GUY. I find myself thinking about this notion of, “Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Prince, Dinner like a Pauper.” Seriously. I think about it while I drive for hours per day. It reminds me of when someone asks me, “Whaddya EAT?” I now just say, “Your mom,” and call it a day. No time for plebs. But this is important. Are we talking by calories or by volume? I notice, as a food addict, I guess, that I’m still wanting to save, postpone and hang onto foods that I find beyond delicious. It’s the Sweet Potatoes. Yesterday I did it again, I had two 1lb sweet potatoes and planned to smoke’em by 6pm in my attempt to prevent midnight binging. I had my Miso greens (just 1.75lbs, first day doing them for breakfast/lunch), exercised twice, everything going perfectly, but was satisfied after one Sweet Potato, and I still have the second one NOW - the next morning. I have it right here. Last night I felt hungry and had a red apple while preparing my big Miso jar (I had extra time last night and with extra time I sit around and eat). So it’s greens - I crave them the most, especially with garlic and lime. Nice. I prepared 700 calories of greens, poured my pot liquor in my hot thermos and walked like an absolute beast - burned 800 calories last night for the third workout of my day. I continued to save my Sweet Potato (just too tasty and I’m used to fasting with something tasty at my fingertips and gutting the weakness). Last night the apple prevented weakness when I felt hungry (progress). I walked hard while sipping my pot liquor (that’s a MAJOR GO) and took it easy on my greens (I know I can’t finish an 800 calorie jar of greens). I had about half: 350 calories and was stuffed. Good deal. So while in bed, in my attempt to prevent a midnight binge, I smoked a baby watermelon (450 calories) and slept (I’m sleeping much less: 3-4hrs and having explosive energy all day) and woke up to binge after sleeping 3hrs and smoked 12oz strawberries. Now I’m up. I just didn’t go back to sleep. I listened to Mary talk about restaurants and oil (LOL). I’m calling the strawberries breakfast, I guess and in a couple hours I’m going to smoke the rest of my leftover Miso greens from last night. THEN I’ll have that Sweet Potato. I’m trying to do big breakfast and smaller and smaller amounts of calories as the day gets late but I don’t know if the CALORIES need to be in the morning or if the VOLUME needs to be in the morning. The best I can do for now is stick with the big volume: 350 cals greens, 450 cals Watermelon or 100 cals at a time of Strawberries all instead of blueberries and beans and oats, even though I am allowing a daily serving of dry McCann’s Apple Cinnamon oats pacquette around 4pm with a dash of Clove, Allspice, Cayenne, Turmeric and Mint (tastes like a DEEP cinnamon flavour) before my second workout of the day which is with a 50lb kettlebell and a 45min walk on a hill somewhere). It gives me that granola fix and prevents me from smoking boxes of oats in my sleep. The single-serve of oats stays. I slayed THAT dragon. I can’t decide on volume or calories. All I know is the greens in the morning MUST stay. The 2-4 lbs greens last me all morning into 3pm or so. Then just one sweet potato holds me until I’m preparing greens at night. My aim is to prepare greens at night FOR the NEXT MORNING out of convenience since I’ve only recently figured out how to steam perfectly and efficiently with my InstaPot. But having that pot liquor during that evening walk is KILLER. I like that 350 calories of greens at night and I’m totally cool with smoking a Watermelon before bed every night if that’s what this turns out to be. I have two watermelons left and getting more from Trader Joe’s this morning after my leftover greens. I WILL force myself to kill that Sweet Potato as the first thing after my leftover greens. The Sweet Potato is just SOOOO GOOOOOD I still act like, “Oooooooh, my preciousssssss.” I’ll come around: sticking to big volume is no issue for me. I know how to wear a life vest. I know how to have my own back. Just smelling stronger like pumpkin pie/sweet potato pie w crème brulée stronger and getting physically stronger and getting more and more shredded and my cardio is just unexplainable. Wild. Sorry to ramble. Does this man mean CALORIES or VOLUME when he attempts to say, “King Breakfast, Prince Lunch, Pauper Dinner.” ? It really helps me to KNOW what the best thing is then from there I’ll make a way. Consistency is something I can force on myself with ease - a real superpower. I also have to say this dude has an amazing voice. It took me a while to find this video. I first heard this in my sleep and it’s taken a month now to find it again. Saving it now. Goodness. Chef AJ: I can’t explain how useful I find your channel. I don’t think anyone eats as clean as I do. I made the decision this morning that there’s ONE thing I’ll indulge in from restaurants (fun time) : juices. I never eat at restaurants. I’m beyond it; it’ll be too big a step backward, it’s just not worth it. And I do NOT juice fruits. But when I get over this saving Sweet Potatoes nonsense, I can’t help but notice they push fruits out of my day - ESPECIALLY with sticking to Strawberries and Watermelon to keep from overdoing calories. So. I never eat out. But when I do (3-4x per year), it’ll be to endulge in my worst junk food that I’ll allow now: juices. It’s gotta be top stuff: beets, carrot, greens w ginger AND calorie per 12 oz will be the first consideration. Calories first, THEN source. So I’m looking at these deliverable 40 cal and 70 cal beet and carrot and green juices. Just one of each. Bingo. I think that’s a real sweet spot. I have those banana and carrot loafs being shipped to Coraopolis and I’ll be ready to allow them in when they get here. That’s keeping me from ordering some lame-ass salad from some “healthy” restaurant. Like, seriously, these plebs have NO IDEA what healthy is. The world is messed up. Badly messed up. It’s not US. It’s NOT OUR FAULT. We have to be anal about this stuff while moving eating times around and while changing sources of calories. It’s during these transition periods that MASSIVE, UNCORRECTABLE mistakes can take place. That’s what I’ve found. We’re doing the right thing, friends. Don’t ever let anyone make you feel bad for doing the ABSOLUTE best you can for your body. I don’t think we get another one - that’s the word on the streets I walk, anyway. Other people think we get do-overs: silly boys. I love you guys. You’re a real light in this world of nutritional darkness. Stay well. Chef AJ, you look incredible. I’m so proud of you. No one can judge me harder than I do and I’m good with it because I do this not because I hate my body - but because I LOVE MY BODY 😘 👌 Volume or Calories? (THANK YOU 🤗)
Wow! Salad for breakfast, he's got me beat! I've been PB for 12 years and I've been doing the late lunch/early dinner for a few years now. I feel better, more energetic this way. Even as a teen I rarely ate past 6 pm. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night really hungry but most of the time I'm good until breakfast.
I remember first hearing Steve on the PlantYourself podcast, and it being a great interview, so it was really nice to see that he came on to your show, too :D such a wonderful conversation, thank you so much
I’m the same, Chef AJ. Never in my entire life have I wanted to eat in the morning. Tears and nagging at the breakfast table as a child. As an adult, even when I “weaned” off night eating, still not hungry before 11am. (I get up at 5am)
This is an excellent conversation. I’ve learned so much. I thought I pretty much knew about the benefits of fasting already, but there is so much I didn’t know. Thank you both.
Giving the author a "shout out" for his other non-dietary or health-related books, summarized below: Steve Hendricks is a freelance reporter. He is the author of A Kidnapping in Milan and The Unquiet Grave: The FBI and the Struggle for the Soul of Indian Country, which was named to several best-of-the-year lists in 2006.
I used to do omad for years when I was on a cooked plant based diet. After becoming high raw, I had to extend my eating window to get my calories in and 9 to 3pm works perfectly for me. My body never liked eating in the evening. Makes sense now, it's the natural thing to do. I'll always do some form of IF. Water fasting more than 36 to 48 hours is a struggle for me although I'd love to incorporate it in my lifestyle from time to time.
Hi book is a must--so informative, took a lot away from it which I implement into my life & the life of my clients, as a Nutrition Lifestyle Health Coach
PS: my labs are great, BP normal, lost 117lbs😊...I’m 68 now. Wish I would have gone plant exclusive in my younger years! But, “it’s never too late” :-)
Came into the program late...are you referring to Intermitamt Fasting? I have put on 30 lb since the Pandemic started (I m 70 AMD cant manage the amount/intensity of exercise I use to do. So, I am tying IM fasting with fairly good results (8 lb in 2 wks,.using 16/8) Thx for doing a great show on this topic!
I’ve done OMAD, 18:6, 16:8, 20:4 so many different ones. I will try 9-3pm, seems easier than 8-2pm for me. I do notice I do well when I stick to it, but it is hard to stick with it if you’re used to eating outside of the window.
@@doctork1708 yeah I’ve heard that before. I was just naming all of the different IF times I have done. OMAD being one of them (one hour feeding window)

His daily diet sounds great but I wonder why he did not mention legumes. Hope it was just an oversight.
I noticed that too. About as perfect as a diet can get otherwise.
