My choice for today as well! Jethro Tull - Minstrel In The Gallery, really good album, like the mixture of electric and acoustic stuff. The hard rocking title track is excellent, great guitar work by Martin Barre. The folky Cold Wind to Valhalla, more proggy Black Satin Dancer and the 16 minute+ epic Baker Street Muse also great.
My pick for today is Parliament - Mothership Connection. Highly influential album from a band that created their own musical universe in which infectious funk and uplifting grooves prevail. Such fun that these extraterrestials came to our world to give us the funk. ´P-Funk (Want To Get Funked Up) ´Unfunky UFO´ ´Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)' are indispensable at any intergalactic party. Funkatastic album.
Great pick, Pete! My number 11 Steely Dan - Katy Lied 12 Ted Nugent - Ted Nugent 13 Jean-Luc Ponty - Upon the Wings of Music 14 Tommy Bolin - Teaser 15 Phil Manzanera - Diamond Head 16 Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte 17 Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti 18 Thin Lizzy - Fighting 19 The Tubes - The Tubes 20 Hatfield and the North - The Rotters’ Club 21 Jethro Tull - Minstrel in the Gallery 22 Brian Eno - Another Green World 23 Soft Machine - Bundles 24 Return to Forever featuring Chick Corea - No Mystery 25 Sloche - J'un Oeil 26 Passport - Cross-Collateral 27 Herbie Hancock - Man-Child 28 Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow - Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow 29 Roxy Music - Siren 30 Neil Merryweather - Krypronite 31 Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic
Day 21 and my pick is Straight Shooter by Bad Company. Their classic second album following their amazing debut. The first two tracks were both released as singles. Good Lovin' Gone Bad and the sensual Feel Like Makin' Love are now considered masterpieces of classic rock. The 4 members complimenting each other perfectly. I still think Weep No More reminds me of Free's My Brother Jake, but no bad thing. Shooting Star closes out Side 1 and has a country rock swing to it and a great guitar solo from Mick Ralphs. Side 2 opens with Deal With The Preacher, another great Ralphs riff and more sterling vocals from Paul Rodgers. Boz and Simon commanding the rhythm section. Wild Fire Woman is another classy blues rock song with more tasty playing from the band. A deep cut, but one of my favourites from the record. The second of Simon Kirke's 2 solo writing credits follows. Anna is a simple love song to (I'm guessing) his wife. Pleasant enough but not really a stand out. The album rounds off with Rodgers' Call On Me. Another ballad type song led by what sounds like a Fender Rhodes piano. It does include more tasty guitar work from Mick Ralphs. Not as memorable as their debut, but a good addition to their catalogue.
My choice for Day 21 "Fandango" by ZZ Top 31. "Diamonds and Rust" by Joan Baez 30. "Just Another Way to Say I Love You" by Barry White 29. "Wake Up Everybody" by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes 28. Hey guys sorry I've been M.I.A in recent days but fighting a cold and long work hours took up about all my time! So I'm gonna catch up by listing some of the albums my Dad got me heavily into from 1975! Great memories of shooting pool in our basement to these 3 albums! 1. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Nuthin Fancy - One of the first southern rock bands I ever got into Thanks to my Dad. One of his favorite bands ever as well. That southern Poetry and lead guitar lines never sounded better! Fav tracks : Saturday Night Special On the Hunt I'm A Country Boy 2. Ted Nugent - S/T- One of the first records I bought to start my record collection out! That guitar and Derek St Holmes combo is such a winner here. Favorite tracks : Stranglehold Motorcity Madhouse Stormtroopin 3. Nazareth - Hair of the Dog - Another one of those classic records my Dad turned me onto. I've loved Nazareth ever since with that signature vocal of Dan McCaferty to Manny Charltons underrated leads you cant go wrong on this album. Favorite tracks: Miss Misery Changin Times Hair of the Dog and Please Dont Judas Me (a late night favorite for me and Dad!)
Hey Logan, cool dad. My dad was great in lots of ways, of course, but musically felt I should be listening more to Mozart than metal.... fine nowadays perhaps, but not when I was 8!
My day 21 fifty year old album is Kansas - Song for America. 1. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here. Tribute to Syd Barrett. 2. Jethro Tull - Minstrel in the Gallery 3. Camel - The Snow Goose. 4. Banco del Mutuo Soccorso - Banco 20. Gentle Giant - Free Hand 21. Kansas - Song for America
11. Jeff Beck, Blow by Blow After a half-hearted tryout jamming with the Stones, The guitar master started his instrumental smash with Sir George Martin producing. With songs with names like Scatterbrain, Air Blower, Freeway Jam and Constipated Duck, You know you're going to hear something special! The rest are covers which he makes unique. Stevie Wonder played clavinet on one of his 2 songs. This was number four in the USA for an instrumental album!
Hi Ziggy, as I've said to others this month, I bow down to JB's ability and acknowledge the high esteem in which he's held, but can't get very excited about this one as the jazz fusion format us, as Pete would say, not in my wheelhouse...
I wish that things are turning better for your family. My pick for day 21 is ZZ Top : Fandango! I´m not usually hugely into this kind of very basic blues rock and boogie rock, but ZZ Top does it so amazingly that I really love this album. Minstrel In The Gallery made my list too.
21) David Bowie - Young Americans Young Americans was a giant change in musical directions for David Bowie. Completely dropping Glam Rock, Bowie wholeheartedly shifts to Philly Soul and does an amazing job of making it his own. Seeing as I was already a fan of the genre, Young Americans quickly became one of my favorite Bowie albums. In fact, I found it easier to get into than Diamond Dogs. Bowie himself was obviously a big fan, and he did an incredible job of recruiting talented session musicians and singers, including Luther Vandross and Ava Cherry, to help build these songs. Bowie's voice change had also become striking at this point, clearly hoarser and deeper than it was just a few years earlier, during his "Ziggy Stardust" era. But the man could sing, and he really nailed it here. Young Americans also contains some of Bowie's best songwriting. The opening title track has held up astonishingly well, and "Across The Universe" is also a highlight. The super smooth "Right", groovy "Fascination", and introspective "Somebody Up There Likes Me" are definitely standout tracks. "Can You Hear Me" features some brilliant strings and sax work, and of course, the much heralded "Fame" is a fantastic closer to this underrated classic of an album. I know Young Americans hasn't always gotten a lot of love from fans, and even Bowie had mixed feelings about it, but I think this record represents David Bowie at his best. 1) Gary Wright - The Dream Weaver 2) Emmylou Harris - Elite Hotel 3) Black Oak Arkansas - Ain't Life Grand 4) Bob Seger - Beautiful Loser 5) ZZ Top - Fandango! 6) Eagles - One Of These Nights 7) Linda Ronstadt - Prisoner In Disguise 8) Neil Young - Zuma 9) Bob Marley & The Wailers - Live! 10) Strawbs - Ghosts 11) Jethro Tull - Minstrel In The Gallery 12) Angel - S/T 13) Crack The Sky - S/T 14) Rush - Fly By Night 15) Grand Funk Railroad - Caught In The Act 16) KISS - Alive! 17) Ian Hunter - S/T 18) Hank Williams Jr. - Hank Williams Jr. And Friends 19) Elton John - Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy 20) Queen - A Night At The Opera 21) David Bowie - Young Americans
Nice article Chris. I always liked the glam rock better. Aladdin Sane is my favorite Bowie album with Mick Ronson tearing it up. But I always liked the song “Young Americans”. Since you wrote so glowingly, maybe I should give this one another listen.
I really liked this album from the word go. I recall Bowie came out with some nonsense at the time about the end of rock music, which if correct didn’t help his change of direction with his loyal following.
Day 21. Outlaws - Outlaws. 😃👍. Tampa FL hometown band. Released in July 1975. I became a teenage fan in CT. Of course, I love the entire great album. 🔥. My favorite track today is “Song In The Breeze.” Rock Always! - Heather

My Day 21 Pick: Eagles - One of These Nights Probably not as great as the one that would come after it, Hotel California, but nonetheless a solid collection of tunes from the opening title track to closer "I Wish You Peace." Of course, "Take It to the Limit" was also a huge hit for the band. Other highlights for me include "Hollywood Waltz," "Lyin' Eyes," and "After the Thrill Is Gone." And this pick reminds me of how, two weeks later, many of us are still praying for L.A. and the men and women of its fire department!
You say not as great as Hotel California, but I'd totally disagree. One of These Nights is the last of the best four albums they recorded. I waited eagerly for the release of Hotel California and certainly wasn't disappointed, but those earlier albums have become my absolute favourites over time. The 'proper' Eagles but of course that's just my opinion.
Hope things are better with you and your family today, Pete. My choice today is similar to yesterday, an underappreciated album in this band's canon and one I originally rejected due to a key member leaving, one that was, as I saw it, essential to the band. The album in question being COME TASTE THE BAND by DEEP PURPLE. Like many I had been happy to welcome David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes into the band, especially after the barnstorming Burn album and the enjoyable if more laid back groove of Stormbringer, but no Ritchie Blackmore, at the time that seemed unthinkable and also at the time, in my ignorance I had never heard of Tommy Bolin. As it happens he brought a slightly different vibe and sound to the Purps, being versed in funk and fusion as well as hard rock. His thicker tone was also something that took a little getting used to. In hindsight and with time passed since it's release, this has come to be more appreciated, certainly by me. Songs like energetic opener Coming Home with its soaring guitar solo, Lady Luck the funky strut of Gettin' Tighter the grimy Dealer and the hard rocking Drifter are full of great playing from all concerned and Coverdale's and Hughes' vocals are excellent throughout. You Keep On Moving is also a real highlight for me. Of course as we know, this line up lasted only this one album before, given some of the members, serious addiction problems, it inevitably fell apart with several shambolic performances on the subsequent tour. However, this is a good advert for what might have been had this mark lV line up held it together for longer.
@iainhead9898 Thanks Iain. Yes, I do remember you picking this one. Inevitable that we will pick a lot of the same choices in features like this as we have a lot of similar tastes.
Fly by night. By Rush. The classic Anthem, best i can, In the end , and one of my favs, By-tor and the snow dog. Other Rush albums sometimes gets more credit, but this one is right up there
Albums That Are 50 Years Old 11. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti Led Zeppelin IV and Physical Graffiti were the first two Zep albums I owned, getting the vinyl through the record club when I was about in sixth grade. I got the double album thinking I would get more bang for my buck, but I felt it was on the other side of the band's peak. I wouldn't say the decline was drastic, as it still made my Lucky 13, but honestly just three tracks are all-time classics -- "Kashmir," "In the Light," and "Ten Years Gone" and another three are pretty great -- "Houses of the Holy," "Trampled Under Foot" and "Custard Pie." The rest is filler, many leftovers from previous album sessions of varying quality from good ("Sick Again") to throwaway ("Boogie With Stu."). It seems they were inspired by Rolling Stones' sprawling, murky Exile on Main Street (1972), though interestingly, critical opinion of Physical Graffitti seems to be on the rise in contrast to Exile. I've wrestled with that damn album for 44 years, and to it's credit, it's crawled it's way back up my list in recent years. Day 21 Dreamboat Annie - Heart. An album that includes such a wonderful mix of songs. From the first track Magic Man, with Ann's delightful vocal work, the fantastic guitar playing from Nancy and later that synthesizer coming in making this the perfect opener. Soul of the Sea later on side 1, what a track this is, starting so gently but later Ann comes into her own, with some really powerful vocal work! NO SILENCE!! Crazy On You which l read is the most popular song on the album is another real classic. Title track which appears here and there throughout the album is another highlight of the album. Overall, a fantastic debut album no question!
My Day 21 pick is an album released on 28 March 1975 and recorded in September 1974 at Clearwell Castle, Gloucestershire, England and produced by the band im talking about the second studio album by the English hard rock supergroup Bad Company Straight Shooter. In May 1974, Bad Company released their self-titled debut album.[2] Three months later, the band and recording engineer Ron Nevison recorded at least eight songs at Clearwell Castle in Gloucestershire, England. Sometime later Nevison mixed the songs for Straight Shooter at Air Studios in London. The sleeve for the album was designed by Hipgnosis, who also designed their debut album.[1] The first single from the album, "Good Lovin' Gone Bad", was released in March 1975[2] and reached No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100.[8] The album's final single "Feel like Makin' Love" was released in June[2] and reached No. 10 on the Hot 100.[8]The album reached number 3 on both the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200.[5][6] It was certified gold (500,000 units sold) by the Recording Industry Association of America a month after its release.[7] The album was remastered and re-released in 1994. The track "Shooting Star" (written by lead singer Paul Rodgers) was lyrically inspired by the drug and alcohol-related deaths of guitarist Jimi Hendrix and other rock musicians. My favorite albums turning 50 In no particular order: Day 21: Head East - Flat As a Pancake Flat As a Pancake is the debut album by the band Head East. I am aware that people are tired of the song “Never Been Any Reason”, and I understand. Radio stations played the heck out of it. Our mother's health was get worse and by this point she was spending a lot of time in the hospital. Flat As a Pancake was one of the albums that gave us several minutes of escape. It was an album that allowed us to be kids and in my brothers case, teens. Flat As a Pancake is still a special album to us. My favorite tracks; “Never Been Any Reason” “Love Me Tonight” “One Against the Other” “Lovin’ Me Along” “Fly By Night Lady” Day 21: Head East - Flat As a Pancake Day 20: Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac Day 19: Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run Day 18: Lynyrd Skynyrd - Nuthin' Fancy Day 17: Rush - Fly By Night Day 16: Kiss - Alive! Hi Pete & everyone. Dave here. My pick today is MAIN COURSE by THE BEE GEES. I was a fan of the band's classic hit singles in the 60s, and Gotta Get A Message To You was one I bought before getting into albums, like this one. It's a transition from their classic pop to what was to become their disco revolution. Of the classic pop, you have Robin singing Country Lanes and Barry with Songbird (shades of Elton John?). But there's also the phenomenal Jive Talking, which almost single-handedly announced their new direction. I also love the funky Nights On Broadway, and the gorgeous chorus to Baby As You Turn Away. Probably plenty of gargling going on, as the band honed their falsettos!
Hi Dave. My story about the Bee Gees is similiar, starting with singles like "Lonely Days" and "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart". I don't have "Main Course", but I have Jive Talking, Nights On Broadway and You Should Be Dancing on a Best Of CD. I baught the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack, later also "Spirits Having Flown", "Living Eyes" in LP format, with "ESP" and "One" following on CD. Always will love their music and compositions which they wrote for such a lot of other bands and singers.
Today's pick for me is an album that is on a lot of lists. Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin is my pick. It's a great album by a great band. So many bands release double albums with filler tracks. This is one of the few truly good double albums by a rock band. Don't include live albums. Take care, Pete. Enjoy the music.

HEAD EAST -- "FLAT AS A PANCAKE." Solid debut from the Illinois quintet. They filled the Family Arena to capacity last Thanksgiving with an energetic, heavy set under the leadership of original keyboardist Roger Boyd (alongside Foghat, Shooting Star and Missouri). Best tracks -- "Never Been Any Reason," "City Of Gold" and "Brother Jacob" -- "The story came down from the mountain town Brother Jacob was called away, They say that the dead came for him They swear it to this very day, Then again there's another tale That is told around the town, Says Brother Jacob is still alive And living underground..." I followed the amazing career of John Sykes for ages. This is indeed a very sad time. R.I.P.

The pick for me today is Aerosmith's Toys in the Attic. Ive always see-sawed between this one and Rocks as my fave Aerosmith. 11. Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic 12. Patti Smith - Horses 13. FRANK ZAPPA ONE SIZE FITS ALL. Cannot leave this magnificent album out. Start to finish unique quirky Zappa lyrics matched to excellence in playing. Florentine Pogen is a favourite but hey so is everything else. SOT contributors have quite rightly heavily endorsed this Zappa 1975 classic.
Great stuff!! They don't sound like anyone else!! My #21: Going with a live album from one of the best singer/songwriters. He wrote some great songs that just took you to some other place when you listened to them, and you could understand all of the lyrics when he sang. Talking about John Denver - An Evening With John Denver
# 11 Triumvirat: Spartacus After having picked the amazing “Neu!” yesterday I reach for another german band today which had some notable success outside its home country. “Spartacus” is the best record Emerson, Lake and Palmer never made and far better than anything after “Brain Salad Surgery” by ELP. Triumvirat are clearly influenced by their great predecessors and a power trio as well with keyboards, bass/vocals and drums. “Spartacus” is their opus magnum and a concept album devoted to the gladiator who led a rebellion against the Romans. # 12 Neu!: Neu! ‘75 # 13 Neil Young & Crazy Horse: Zuma # 14 Hawkwind: Warrior on the Edge of Time # 15 Van der Graaf Generator: Godbluff # 16 Renaissance: Scheherazade & Other Stories # 17 Patti Smith: Horses # 18 Queen: A Night at the Opera # 19 Chris Squire: Fish Out of Water # 20 Steely Dan: Katy Lied # 21 Manfred Mann’s Earth Band: Nightingales and Bombers # 22 Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention: One Size Fits All # 23 Neil Young: Tonight’s the Night # 24 Peter Hammill: Nadir’s Big Chance # 25 Be-Bop Deluxe: Futurama # 26 Tangerine Dream: Rubycon # 27 10cc: The Original Soundtrack # 28 Joni Mitchell: The Hissing of Summer Lawns # 29 Jeff Beck: Blow by Blow # 30 Ted Nugent: Ted Nugent # 31 Supertramp: Crisis? Day21-Foghat-Fool for the City. My favorite album by Rod Price,Lonesome Dave and crew. This album has great tracks like the title track,Take It or Leave It and the radio classic Slowride. Foghat was always a good cruisin band to drive to. This is my number 21 pick.
Morning /Afternoon everyone, and Pete - hope today is a better day, regards to you and the family. On to the matter in hand, however, and my #11 pick for the month, but for those hoping for a delightful Gadget-esque insight into some obscure folk/prog/psych outfit from just outside Pratts Bottom*, I'm afraid you're out of luck. Instead, it's album number 6 from Birmingham's most influential metal band ever, praised already by many of us. BLACK SABBATH "Sabotage" (Vertigo) Not my personal favourite, but very far from being the worst of the Ozzy era, there are a number of decidedly under the radar songs on this album that deserve wider praise than they get. Of course, Symptom Of The Universe is probably the most lauded track on offer, but there are other gems here, from the monumental, 9+ minute Megalomania, through to the album closer The Writ, via Thrill Of It All and Am I Going Insane (Radio), among others. Of course the line-up is as iconic as any you could mention, and all four are at the peak of their collective powers here, performance-wise, Ozzy rarely sounding so possessed, before or since, Iommi coming with riffs from every direction, and the slightly dirty production makes Geezer's bsss growl and Bill Ward's drums rattle like a WW1 artillery barrage. Andy M's Battle royals this month have been throwing up a few of last year's doom/stoner albums and he's been generous in his marking. Andy, my friend, thus is how it's done! *This is an actual village in England.
Very nice write-up Iain. Sabotage actually is my favorite Sabbath album (with the possible exception of "Am I Going Insane (Radio)"). My wife and I are planning to visit the UK later this year, we'll have to seek out Pratts Bottom.
Today my pick #11 is Steely Dan Katy Lied, a really good album, my favorites are Black Friday, bad sneakers, rose darling, daddy don’t live in that New York City no more, everyone’s gone to the movies, chain lightning. 11. Steely Dan- Katy Lied 12. Styx- Equinox 13. Jeff Beck- Blow by Blow 14. ZZ Top- Fandango 15. The Doobie Brothers- Stampede 16. Kiss- Alive 17. Fleetwood Mac- Fleetwood Mac 18. Rainbow- Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow 19. Little Feat- The Last record album 20. Rush- Caress of Steel 21. Alice Cooper- Welcome to my Nightmare 22. Outlaws- Outlaws 23. Marshall Tucker band- Searchin’ for a Rainbow 24. Blackfoot- No Reservations 25. Charlie Daniels- Nightrider 26. The Who- Who by numbers 27. ELO- Face the music 28. Bob Seger- Beautiful Loser 29. Foghat- Fool for the city 30. Ted Nugent- Ted Nugent 31. Bachman-Turner Overdrive- Head on
Super album choice there, for me although Katy is an excellent album, it came between my two favourite Steely Dan albums, Pretzel Logic (one of the best albums albums ever for the me ) and The Royal Scam. Those two have many more songs that have come to be real favourite tracks from the band, whereas Katy doesn't really have any songs that stand out in the same way.
Day 21 / Pick # 11 = BACHMAN-TURNER OVERDRIVE 🍁 - Four Wheel Drive. BTO's 1975 follow-up to their massively successful Not Fragile #1 album from the previous year, and was cast on a similar anvil....big stompin' heavy riff-based songs, and the inclusion of a radio-friendly ditty. This record represents the last of the heavy period of BTO's output. Their albums after this one started to move toward a smoother sound. Highlights: Flat Broke Love; Four Wheel Drive; She's A Devil; and She's Keepin' Time.
Hey Gary. Four Wheel Drive just missed my list coming in at #35. BTO was releasing albums that were getting better and better up to and including, "Not Fragile" When I heard "Four Wheel Drive" I felt that there were noticably fewer "fist pumpin'" moments on that album.
@@iainhead9898 Hi Iain. BTO was one of those bands I was exposed to in my formative years....after Chicago and Grand Funk Railroad. Back in those days (it was pre-KISS....I missed and never really ever boarded that train...it was after my time), BTO was where my heavy listening habits started to form....along with Nazareth and then to Deep Purple.
Good pick going with the Tull I shifted mine around this was towards the end but I'm putting it here in honor of the loss of the last member of The Band Mr Garth Hudson. Who died in a nursing home peacefully up in Woodstock New York. Famous for not only his great licks on the organ but not using a Hammond organ and his preference of the lowrey organ. So here for day 21 it is THE BAND NORTHERN LIGHTS SOUTHERN CROSS Thisof course would be their last studio album before they would break up for a while before their final concert and film of course known as the legendary The last waltz. At factory songs are very predominant on The last waltz from this album Some of my favorite tunes are found on this The amazing story of the French Canadian settlers known as the acadians the song called Acadian driftwood We would also have the very heart tugging Rick Danko it makes no difference a classic now A real fun one from the great levon helm is found on this album The classic Ophelia covered by many The opening track levon helms forbidden fruit And the album closer another favorite favorite written by Richard Manuel rags and bones. List of course was recorded at Bob Dylan's Shangri-La studio ranch in Malibu California now owned by Rick Rubin.
@@dennisstratton6508 thank you Dennis. Yes some people forget about the 75 album quite a bit though. When they think of the band they think of the first three albums
Day 21: ZZ Top- Fandango. The fourth album released by ZZ Top. The first side is selections from live shows, and the second side has new studio recordings. Favorites tracks, Jailhouse Rock (live) Backdoor Medley (live) Studio Tracks: Blue Jean Blues Balinese Mexican Blackbird Heard It On The X Tush The 2006 remaster CD has 3 bonus live tracks.
#11 The Who - The Who By Numbers So named because the cover is in “paint by number” style drawn by Bassist John Entwistle. I have stated many times that The Who are my favorite band. I saw them on tour for this album; and they were the best that I ever saw…just a smidge over Led Zeppelin ‘77. But I always considered this one of their worst albums with Keith on the drums. Since it’s far better than any subsequent album, I need to re-evaluate this record. And I realize this is a pretty great offering by my favorite band. “Slip Kid” is a masterwork ! It’s a song I can replay just after it finished and love it more and more. It’s start stop pulsing style is just perfect. “However Much I Booze” has a fine mix of acoustic and electric guitars. Keith plays very well here. Pete keeps saying “No Way Out”…I wonder if that wasn’t a veiled message to Keith that sadly didn’t get through. Not sure… “Squeeze Box” I absolutely hated. I have softened a bit on that one. It has a cabaret sound like the skiffle bands around England in the early ‘60’s. I can tolerate it better now. “Dreaming From the Waist” has plenty of room for Keith’s drum rolls, with a great outro guitar solo. It sounds a little like “Sea and Sand” from Quadrophenia. “Imagine a Man” is a good vehicle for Roger Daltrey’s vocals. “Success Story” is a characteristic song from John with awesome bass riffing. But it’s different because Daltrey sings most of the lead vocals. Usually John does the singing alone on his tunes. John does sing in the middle section. “They Are All in Love” is pretty with lots of piano. It sounds like a leftover track from the Quadrophenia sessions. That makes it a great song ! “Blue Red and Grey” is a reflective love song. It’s very lyrical with spare instrumentation and sadly no drums. “How Many Friends” is a stone cold classic musical tune by The Who ! Keith, John and Pete give dynamic performances on this one. The bridge is fantastic. Add in the beautiful message, and you have a great … The Who By Numbers…tune. “In A Hand or a Face” is a crunchy rocker to end the record. Awesome guitar from Pete Townshend. Keith Moon gives the last truly great drum playing on record on this album. By the next album Who Are You, Keith’s gifts are much diminished by alcohol consumption. So I appreciate this album all the more. It’s said to be Pete’s singer/songwriter confessional album. But he cleverly leaves plenty of room for his band mates to make this a very good album. Play it loud !! Enjoy this…believe me it’s worth the effort !!
Excellent write-up as usual Richard. By Numbers is one of my favorite Who albums, so obviously it's on my list as well. To be honest, it's my pick for tomorrow.
@@christophercoles4401Yea Chris I seem to remember you liking this record. My problem was in comparing it to the great Who albums that came before it. But compared to all 1975 records, it stacks up as one of the best of that year.
Greetings, Pete, and good morning (afternoon, evening or night) to everyone else. Wishing you a good day today, Pete, and that the day brings the best possible for you and the family. Here early so back later for your choice. Personal pick today? Somewhat influenced by the recent passing of John Sykes [RIP, John] and other matters in life, the sixth studio album by this Canadian/American released in June on the Reprise label - Tonight's The Night by Neil Young. A little more of the CSNY alphabet for the year. This is not the smooth acoustic Neil of Harvest [or other later albums]. On initial listens, it came across as an album of death and its effects but - at least personally - has become more of an album about mourning which can be dignified or out of control. But whether it is about death, mourning or some related ideas, that means that it is really about life and still being on the planet and going forward. Not an album played every day, but an album that obviously has a personal impact and is turned to often, particularly as my years accumulated towards the coming 69th birthday. Listening and further reading about the album and its history is encouraged. A great album as a whole. Apologies for all the philosophical ramblings. Thanks, Pete. Looking forward to hearing your selection later.
@@richardbooth6063 Thanks, Richard. The years have gone so quickly that when something seems 5 years ago that is translated by my head to at least 10 years.
@@melaniethurber5117 Thanks, Melanie. Wintry mix predicted here tonight and tomorrow morning. Schools in our county still to decide later today whether to close or not. Sister is expecting snow in the western panhandle this afternoon. All good, though.
Day 21 - “Fandango”, ZZ Top Day 20 - “Fool For The City”, Foghat Day19 - “Equinox”, Styx Day 18 - “A Night At The Opera”, Queen Day17 - “The Minstrel In The Gallery”, Jethro Tull Day 16 - “Fly By Night”, Rush Day 15 - “Face The Music”, ELO Day 14 - “One Of These Nights”, The Eagles Day 13- “Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow”, Rainbow Day 12 - “Blood On The Tracks”, Bob Dylan Day 11 - “Fighting”, Thin Lizzy Day 10 - “Straight Shooter”, Bad Company Day 9 - “Venus And Mars”, Wings Day 8 - “Stampede”, The Doobie Brothers Day 7 - “Dressed To Kill”, Kiss Day 6 - “Hair Of The Dog”, Nazareth Day 5 - “Nuthin’ Fancy”, Lynyrd Skynyrd Day 4 - “Red Octopus”, Jefferson Starship Day 3 - “Fleetwood Mac”, S/T Day 2 - “Still Crazy After All These Years”, Paul Simon Day 1 - “Caress Of Steel”, Rush
21. Steve Howe - Beginnings This was his first solo and it really showed his versatility on not just the guitar but other stringed instruments. His vocals leave a lot to be desired but his playing is just excellent on this.
@coppulldentalcentrecoppull95 Maybe not in my top of all time, but certainly in high regard. I am going through my year lists at the moment, listening to them all again + a lot of albums i never listened to before. The top 20 gets point (from 20 to 1). I have so far done the 60s and the 70s up to 1978. In the list of totals, Barclay James Harvest is in third place, with only Genesis and Jethro Tull above them. That is based on 11 albums. So, Barclay James Harvest is in very high regards here, :-).

Today`s pick: The Dictators - "Go Girl Crazy" This hybrid mix of early punk and hard rock didn`t fit in to any defined category at the time, but that was part of it`s appeal. Not taking themselves too seriously and with a good sense of humor, this is goofy, rocking and totally entertaining.
Hawkwind ... Warrior on the Edge of Time Honorable Mention: Funkadelic .. Let's Take It To The Stage It's arguably the most iconic Hawkwind album. I have always been buying my Hawkwind used and from the budget bin until recently to fill my Hawkwind shelf. Because of that Warrior on the Edge of Time I only got in recent years. Now I know why owners of this album don't part with it when they need space or cash. Funkadelic's Let's Take It To The Stage is a bit more funkier than prior Westbound label Funkadelic albums. In a matter of months under their Parliament moniker, they conquer the world of funk with Mothership Connection.
Great choice today, Pete - my day 15 pick. Today I'm going for 'Nightingales and Bombers' from Manfred Mann's Earth Band. The unusual album title was apparently inspired by the experience of a BBC Sound Engineer during the Second World War who set out to record bird song and ended up also accidentally recording the RAF bomber aircraft that happened to fly overhead. The opening track, 'Spirits in the Night', is my favourite on the album. 1. Ambrosia - Ambrosia 2. Barclay James Harvest - Time Honoured Ghosts 3. Be-Bop Deluxe - Futurama 4. Camel - The Snow Goose 5. Caravan - Cunning Stunts 6. Clannad - Clannad 2 7. The Doobie Brothers - Stampede 8. Eagles - One of These Nights 9. Electric Light Orchestra - Face the Music 10. Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac 11. Focus - Mother Focus 12. Gryphon - Raindance 13. Justin Hayward and John Lodge - Blue Jays 14. Heart - Dreamboat Annie 15. Jethro Tull - Minstrel in the Gallery 16. Journey - Journey 17. Kansas - Song for America / Masque 18. Kayak - Royal Bed Bouncer 19. Little River Band - Little River Band 20. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Nuthin' Fancy 21. Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Nightingales and Bombers
Today's pick is Kansas-Masque. My favorite Kansas record hands-down featuring standout cuts "Icarus-Born On Wings Of Steel" and "Mysteries And Mayhem". These are two phenomenal heavy epic songs. The entire album is great.
#11 Parliament - Mothership Connection For me, the best Funk band in history; Bernie Worrell on keyboards, Bootsy Collins on bass and other instruments, Gary Shider, Michael Hampton and Glen Goins on guitars and Maceo Parker on sax. All under the leadership of the great prophet of Funk: George Clinton. Albums That Are 50 Years Old in 2025 #11 Parliament - Mothership Connection #12 Roxy Music - Siren #13 Bob Marley and The Wailers - Live! #14 Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks #15 Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac #16 El Reloj - El Reloj #17 Alice Cooper - Welcome to My Nightmare #18 John Lennon - Rock 'n' Roll #19 Kraftwerk - Radio-Activity #20 Ted Nugent - Ted Nugent #21 Scorpions - In Trance #22 Neil Young - Tonight's the Night / Zuma #23 Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte #24 Kiss - Dressing to Kill / Alive #25 Patti Smith - Horses #26 AC/DC - TNT #27 Neu! - Neu! 75 #28 Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time #29 Budgie - Bandolier #30 Steely Dan - Katy Lied #31 Tangerine Dream - Rubycon
I missed yesterday so two picks today. Bad Company - Straight Shooter Heart - Dreamboat Annie Two 10/10 albums for me with so many great tracks including "Shooting Star" "Good Lovin' Gone Bad" "Magic Man" and "Crazy on You"
21. Ambrosia - Ambrosia 20. Harmonium - Les Cinq Saisons 19. Crack the Sky - Crack the Sky 18. Michael Murphey - Blue Skies * Night Thunder 17. Poco - Head Over Heels 16. Babe Ruth -Babe Ruth 15. Premiata Forneria Marconi - Chocolate Kings 01. Asleep at the Wheel - Texas Gold
Day 11 pick is For Earth Below by Robin Trower. Favorite songs are Shame The Devil. Its Only Money. Confessin Midnight. Alethea and Gonna Be More Suspicious.
At day 21, I have (in alphabetical order) the debut album from RAINBOW, “Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow”. Ritchie had left Deep Purple (for the first time back then), because the influence of their “newbies” David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes turned their sound into a too funky and soulful direction, especially on the “Stormbringer” album in 1974. At the same time, he found the highly gifted singer Ronnie James Dio (who had been the support act with his band ELF for Purple at the time, obviously), and then decided to form his own project with this band, minus their original guitar player. Ronnie turned out to be an also gifted co-writer and lyricist along with Ritchie, and they co-wrote 7 tracks for their first album, with two cover versions added. Highlights on the album include the opener “Man On The Silver Mountain”, “Catch The Rainbow”, “The Temple Of The King” and the mentioned cover songs “Black Sheep Of The Family” and “Still I’m Sad”. This has been a great debut album, but the following album “Rising” the other year has topped it for sure. Ritchie and Ronnie joined up there with power drum legend Cozy Powell, keyboarder Tony Carey and bassist Jimmy Bain, replacing the ELF musicians. “Rising” actually had been my first Rainbow album (it was my topic at day 27 of the “stories” month in December last year), and I got their debut a few years later (which I also had at the month of the debut albums topic at some point, BTW). Thanks to Ritchie, we have been introduced to one of the greatest singers ever, Mr. Ronnie James Dio. He has done so much more amazing work with Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell and his own band DIO later, but left us too soon (RIP). May his heritage continue to shine and live on forever. (And Ritchie, of course, also is a legend in his own right.) My personal albums from 1975, in alphabetical order: day 15: ABBA, s/t day 16: America, History day 17: Deep Purple, Come Taste The Band day 18: Steve Hackett, Voyage Of The Acolyte day 19: Ken Hensley, Eager To Please day 20: Led Zeppelin, Physical Graffiti day 21: Rainbow, Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow
Day 21 Edgar Winter - Jasmine Nightdreams Winter is still the most overlooked musician on the planet. His skills on the keys and sax are world class as well as his vocals. This record would remind one of the classic Spirit records of the 60's. Lots of jazz, rock and pop all through the songs here. 1. Miles Davis - Agharta 2. The Dictators - Go Girl Crazy! 3. Larry Coryell and 11th House - Level One 4. Elf - Trying To Burn The Sun 5. Jim Hall - Concierto 6. Grateful Dead - Blues for Allah 7. Rahsaan Roland Kirk - The Case of the 3 Sided Dream in Audio Color 8. Waylon Jennings - Dreaming My Dreams 9. Clifton Chenier - Bogalusa Boogie 10. The Meters - Fire On The Bayou 11. Average White Band - Cut the Cake 12. Merle Haggard - Keep Movin' On 13. Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow 14. ZZ Top - Fandango! 15. Outlaws - S/T 16. Barefoot Jerry - You Can't Get Off with Your Shoes On 17. Ted Nugent - S/T 18. Man - Maximum Darkness 19. Magma - Magma Live Spirit - 20. Son of Spirit 21. Edgar Winter - Jasmine Nightdreams
It was in the early 90's I first heard Jethro Tull and I now think it was something off Crest Of A Knave, but I didn't know them then, so I went to buy something. So, I found this discounted musicassette of Minstrel In The Gallery, thought the artwork looked incredibly cool and bought it. Well, it quickly became one of my favourite albums ever and still is to this day. The guitar solo on the title track is mindblowing and Barre's sound throughout this album is probably his best ever; the suite Baker St. Muse is by far my favourite Tull epic track; there's nothing here I don't adore. A Few years later I bought this masterpiece on CD and recently got the Steven Wilson Remaster on vinyl.
Today's pick is Wish You Were Here, by Pink Floyd.
Welcome to the Machine is my favorite track.
I send Prayers to your family, Pete.

Excellent choice!
Excellent pick David. Coincidentally those two tracks are my favorites on the album as well.
Yes terrific album and songs.
Great pick Danny!

Fav tracks : Saturday Night Special On the Hunt I'm A Country Boy
2. Ted Nugent - S/T- One of the first records I bought to start my record collection out! That guitar and Derek St Holmes combo is such a winner here. Favorite tracks : Stranglehold Motorcity Madhouse Stormtroopin

With songs with names like Scatterbrain, Air Blower, Freeway Jam and Constipated Duck, You know you're going to hear something special! The rest are covers which he makes unique. Stevie Wonder played clavinet on one of his 2 songs. This was number four in the USA for an instrumental album!

Hey Ziggy. I can't think of another fusion album that I'd enjoy listening to more then Blow by Blow.

21) David Bowie - Young Americans
Young Americans was a giant change in musical directions for David Bowie.

My Day 21 Pick:
Eagles - One of These Nights
Probably not as great as the one that would come after it, Hotel California, but nonetheless a solid collection of tunes from the opening title track to closer "I Wish You Peace." Of course, "Take It to the Limit" was also a huge hit for the band. Other highlights for me include "Hollywood Waltz," "Lyin' Eyes," and "After the Thrill Is Gone."
And this pick reminds me of how, two weeks later, many of us are still praying for L.A. and the men and women of its fire department!
Great choice. Take It To The Limit is a favorite.
Vies for my favourite DP album with Burn. Bolin just brings that ‘Bolin thing’ to everyone he worked with.
@shaunogle530 Thank you Shaun.

My choice today too. Wonderful album!
Albums That Are 50 Years Old
11. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Led Zeppelin IV and Physical Graffiti were the first two Zep albums I owned, getting the vinyl through the record club when I was about in sixth grade.

The sleeve for the album was designed by Hipgnosis, who also designed their debut album.[1]
The first single from the album, "Good Lovin' Gone Bad", was released in March 1975[2] and reached No.

@@weirddebbiem1619 hi Debbie. I’ve heard of this band before but never listened to them.
@@gaiaeternal5131 hi Dave. Fantastic pick and article
Excellent choice and article, Dave. I like your song picks. Nights on Broadway is one of my favorite songs of theirs.

# 11 Triumvirat: Spartacus
After having picked the amazing “Neu!” yesterday I reach for another german band today which had some notable success outside its home country.

BLACK SABBATH "Sabotage" (Vertigo)
Not my personal favourite, but very far from being the worst of the Ozzy era, there are a number of decidedly under the radar songs on this album that deserve wider praise than they get.
Agreed Iain....Megalomania is my personal favourite track on this album - epic.

#11 The Who - The Who By Numbers
So named because the cover is in “paint by number” style drawn by Bassist John Entwistle.
Not sure…
“Squeeze Box” I absolutely hated.
Add in the beautiful message, and you have a great …
The Who By Numbers…tune.
Hi Richard. Marvelous pick and article. We did it again today.

Nice pick Richard

Hawkwind ... Warrior on the Edge of Time
Honorable Mention:
Funkadelic .. Let's Take It To The Stage
It's arguably the most iconic Hawkwind album.
Respected pick with Jethro Tull, Pete.
Today I'm going with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow
Great choice today, Pete - my day 15 pick. Today I'm going for 'Nightingales and Bombers' from Manfred Mann's Earth Band. The unusual album title was apparently inspired by the experience of a BBC Sound Engineer during the Second World War who set out to record bird song and ended up also accidentally recording the RAF bomber aircraft that happened to fly overhead. The opening track, 'Spirits in the Night', is my favourite on the album.

At day 21, I have (in alphabetical order) the debut album from
RAINBOW, “Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow”.
(And Ritchie, of course, also is a legend in his own right.)
My personal albums from 1975, in alphabetical order:
day 15: ABBA, s/t
day 16: America, History
day 17: Deep Purple, Come Taste The Band
day 18: Steve Hackett, Voyage Of The Acolyte
day 19: Ken Hensley, Eager To Please
day 20: Led Zeppelin, Physical Graffiti
day 21: Rainbow, Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow
Great write-up Frank. Great album too!
Terrific pick Frank!

My #11 pick for Day 21 is the self titled album by Ted Nugent.
My pick for today is : Patti Smith - Horses
Great pick; probably my all-time fave Tull record.
one of my all-time favorite
