My pick for Day 31 (#1 in my countdown)
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Awesome choice! Same pick today
@@rafaelcruz4176 hi Rafael. Superb pick. Great minds
1 - Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here
My absolute favorite album from 1975 and has been since I started listening to Floyd in the late 80s. Animals for me is the only one that tops this in there catalog, but I love this one. Welcome to the Machine has long been a favorite track from Floyd.
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (# 1)
My favorite 1975 and Pink Floyd album overall. I've always felt the playing on this one was up a level since it's filled with the passion for Syd Barrett. The structure of the album is brilliant with the 2 mostly instrumentals Shine on You Crazy Diamond sequence tracks sandwiching 3 Floyd classics in between. Welcome to the Machine is a song I'd love to have played on a continuous loop at my worksite. Well, make that the whole album now that I think about it.
Thanks to all who posted this month. It was fun learning more about these many great albums from 1975. Hair of the Dog and Warrior on the Edge of Time were two I got into for the first time this month and now thoroughly enjoy.

Great choice and list.
Great Album
Great No 1, Joel
Fine pick Joel. Only a few of us didn't pick Zep today!
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti, their sixth album. An astonishing album; 50 years on it still sounds incredibly raw & powerful. An amazing array of songs in a range of styles, from the heaviest of heavy rock, through blues, prog, folk & more. The album is frontloaded with absolute classics like Custard Pie, Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot and In My Time of Dying on the first two sides. But there some absolute gems on sides 3 and 4 including the magnificent Ten Years Gone (my favourite Zep track) and the proggy In The Light deserves a mention, one of the most underrated Zep tracks ever.
My winner for best 1975 album and my all time favourite album is PHYSICAL GRAFFITI by of course LED ZEPPELIN. Even amongst all of the SOT viewers who have already picked this and there are many, there seems to be two schools of thought. Either that this is a flawed masterpiece of a double album with a bit of filler amongst the standout tracks or that this is flawless, all killer, no filler. Now, naturally enough, I tend to side with the latter view, obviously there are some tracks I like better than others, but there's nothing here that I'm ever tempted to skip when I play this masterpiece. All 4 sides of the vinyl album are terrific in their own way. Custard Pie, The Rover and the tour de force that is In My Time Of Dying form a fantastic rocking first side. Some of Zeppelin's hardest rocking tunes with the whole band on fire and Page's riffing is some of his most brutal. Side 2 continues that momentum with Houses of The Holy, one of the leftover tracks from previous sessions. There's the terrific hard rock/funk hybrid of Trampled Underfoot and perhaps now (having taken over from Stairway To Heaven) Led Zeppelin's most celebrated track, the majestic Kashmir. Magnificent, but wait there's more, much more. There's the experimental and eerie, masterly In The Light, the short acoustic Bron Y'Aur, the west coast laid back infected soft rock of Down By The Seaside, followed by the multi layered guitar workout Ten Years Gone. Finally side 4 contains 5 shorter, snappier songs again showcase Zep's diversity amongst a myriad of styles from hard rockers like Night Flight, The Wanton Song (what a simple yet, truly amazing riff) and Sick Again. Then there's the folk tinged Black Country Woman and the fun rockabilly influenced Boogie With Stu. 4 impeccable sides/15 masterful tracks that display all the true greatness of Led Zeppelin. Some years ago, Kerrang magazine had their writers pool together their votes for the top 100 hard rock albums of all time. This was their top choice with Rock Candy founder, Derek Oliver stating in his review something along the lines of this being the very heart and soul of rock music itself. I couldn't have put it better.
Awesome pick, Jerry! Number one for me this month too

Day 31. Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd.
An album of great importance, after all The Dark Side of the Moon was a hard act to follow!
Only four songs
feature on the record. The epic Shine On You Crazy Diamond takes up most of side one, being a tribute to former band member Syd Barrett (as if anyone didn't know)
Next comes Welcome to the Machine with a rather Hawkwind style intro and Have a Cigar sung by Roy Harper. The title track Wish You Were Here has thought to be another tribute to Syd but this theory was refuted by David Gilmour and Roger Waters. A second helping of Shine On ends this wonderful album.

Hey David! Excellent choice and list
Excellent choice. My favorite Dylan album of the 70’s!
My pick today is Crises What Crises - Supertramp
Day 31: "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow" was released by Rainbow on the Polydor Records label in Sept. of '75. "Man on the Silver Mountain" was the debut single off the LP. It is one of the best rockers on the disc. Some have noted the family resemblance between Blackmore's guitar playing on "Catch the Rainbow" and Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing". Lots of tasty mellotron and clavinet to spice up the pure fantasy lyrics sung by Dio. But it is Richie's virtuoso guitar that dominates the show, with "16th Century Greensleeves" showcasing both artists at a peak of creativity.
Reached #11 in the U.K. but only climbed to 30 U.S. Blackmore would fire both the drum and bass player before taking this show on the road.
Led Zeppelin- Physical Graffiti. My favorite album of 1975 and my favorite album of all time. I would make a case that it’s a great candidate for the greatest rock album ever made. I really enjoyed everyone’s picks and feedback this month cheers to you all from The Captain 🍺

31) Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Physical Graffiti is my favorite Led Zeppelin album. But, is it their best? That's a tough call, but I suppose Led Zeppelin IV deserves the nod based on its renown and its influence alone. But for me, Physical Graffiti is the ultimate Led Zeppelin album, since it captures everything I love about the band, especially their musical vision and fearlessness.
Physical Graffiti is certainly ambitious and sprawling. From the ethereal acoustics of "Bron-Yr-Aur" to the piano and mandolin blues of "Boogie With Stu", from the Eastern influence of "Kashmir" to the monstrous funk of "Trampled Under Foot" (an apt title if there ever was one), Physical Graffiti represents Led Zeppelin at their creative peak. This is '70s Hard Rock at its best. How often can any album contain songs like "In The Light", "Ten Years Gone", "Custard Pie", "The Rover" (my favorite Zeppelin song), "The Wanton Song", "Black Country Woman", and "In My Time Of Dying", along with the other tunes I've already mentioned, and not be considered indispensable?
Overall, Led Zeppelin's sixth album qualifies as essential listening for any fan of '70s Rock, along with the five albums that preceded it (and Presence). If for some strange reason, you haven't heard this monumental double album, you need to stop whatever you're doing and go give it a listen. Pure genius from the mighty Led Zeppelin.

Hey Chris! Excellent choice, article, and list
Hey Chris…nice write up on a classic album to finish a cool month of great music.

And for my finale, # 1: (drum role) Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti. And speaking of Led Zeppelin, I can't wait for "Becoming Led Zeppelin" to come out. I'll need to find a theater in Florida to go see it.

Great list Charlie. Physical Graffiti is amazing.
It’s a classic Charlie ! Thanks for a fun month !😊
good choice
Day31-Led Zeppelin-Physical Graffiti. This is my favorite Led Zeppelin album, and probably one of my favorite rock bands. This album has many different song structures in blues, little folk and plain hard rock. Some songs even have a little progressive elements also. Plant’s vocals on In My Time of Dying are just beautiful. Page’s riffs,John Paul’s bass riffs, and Bonzo’s drumming are at their best. Kashmir which is the lonely hit off this album,is a fantastic piece of music, but I love The Rover. I think it’s one of the best songs Zeppelin has ever recorded. That is my final pick for my top 31 albums that are 50 years old.
Great pick, we're definitely on the same Page (pun intended) today.
My pick as well.
Holy shit, Pere, you and I have the same #1!
My Day 31 Pick (and my genuine #1 of 1975):
Queen - A Night at the Opera
Of course, it kicks off with "Death on Two Legs." Then, we go into the whimsical "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon." Then, Roger Taylor rocks us with "I'm in Love with My Car." Maybe it was considered underwhelming as the follow-up single to "Bohemian Rhapsody," but "You're My Best Friend" is still fun '70s pop. I also absolutely love "39," "Sweet Lady," "The Prophet's Song," "Love of My Life," and yes, the almighty "Bohemian Rhapsody." Then, it closes out with "God Save the Queen."
I'm absolutely obsessed with this album!
As the month comes to a close, these were my 31 picks (a recap)...
Dressed to Kill (Kiss), Hair of the Dog (Nazareth), Why Can't We Be Friends? (War), Venus and Mars (Wings), Katy Lied (Steely Dan), Born to Run (Bruce Springsteen), The Who by Numbers (The Who), Nuthin' Fancy (Lynyrd Skynyrd), Young Americans (David Bowie), Ted Nugent (Ted Nugent), Tale Spinnin' (Weather Report), Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd), Toys in the Attic (Aerosmith), Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow (Rainbow), Fly by Night (Rush), Horses (Patti Smith), Caress of Steel (Rush), The Dream Weaver (Gary Wright), Physical Graffiti (Led Zeppelin), Mothership Connection (Parliament), One of These Nights (Eagles), Siren (Roxy Music), Minstrel in the Gallery (Jethro Tull), Come Taste the Band (Deep Purple), Blood on the Tracks (Bob Dylan), Return to Fantasy (Uriah Heep), Face the Music (Electric Light Orchestra), Fleetwood Mac (Fleetwood Mac), Sabotage (Black Sabbath), Welcome to My Nightmare (Alice Cooper), A Night at the Opera (Queen)

@@christophercoles4401 Thanks! I like your list as well, we have five picks in common, not too bad.
@beetlebum7760 No, not bad at all. I also have several of the albums on your list as honorable mentions.
Hello Pete and everyone. My favourite album of 1975 had the unenviable task of following up one of the biggest selling and most critically acclaimed albums of all time:
1. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
The band definitely succeeded in meeting the increased expectations placed on them, to the extent that many fans actually prefer this album to the legendary DSOTM (I’m not among them). Regardless of ranking, this is unquestionably one of several exceptional releases by Pink Floyd during their prime. I consider Shine On You Crazy Diamond to be almost like a rock symphony, and the whole album is consistently excellent.
2. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
3. Bad Company - Straight Shooter
4. Fleetwood Mac - self titled
5. Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic
6. Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run
7. Queen - A Night At The Opera
8. Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks
9. Eagles - One Of These Nights
10. Heart - Dreamboat Annie
Nos. 11-30 (not ranked)
Jefferson Starship - Red Octopus
Tommy Bolin - Teaser
Rush - Fly By Night
Journey - self titled
Thin Lizzy - Fighting
Be-Bop Deluxe - Futurama
Styx - Equinox
Rory Gallagher - Against The Grain
Doobie Brothers - Stampede
Supertramp - Crisis? What Crisis?
Deep Purple - Come Taste The Band
Roxy Music - Siren
Kansas - Song For America
Foghat - Fool For The City
Little Feat - The Last Record Album
Wings - Venus And Mars
Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow
Nils Lofgren - self titled
Steely Dan - Katy Lied
UFO - Force It
Favourite Live Album : Blue Oyster Cult - On Your Feet Or On Your Knees

Hello Bryan, you've picked a good one today! 😄 My favourite out of Dark Side and Wish depends on which one I'm playing at the time! (no pun intended) Animals is another favourite from the band for many, but that album although wonderful, has never really been in the running for me.

Excellent final picks and list
@ I had to put Floyd and Zeppelin at Number One because both albums are masterpieces and also they were long awaited releases as they were two years removed from The Dark Side of the Moon and Houses of the Holy and was asked to top those albums.
@TJR-ClassicRockCorner0124 right on! Can't argue with that
@@razor7394 Then in 1976 another mix of Wish You Were Here was released being the Stereo Quadraphonic mix which has Have a Cigar and Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts VI-IX both extended with solos cut from the stereo mix and the album has extra synths on Machine, Roger’s unflanged vocals on Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part VII which is great to hear. Then in 2011 was the 5.1 mix which has more instruments restored

We are absolutely on the same PAGE today Chris. Great review that mirrors my exact feelings on this masterpiece.
My pick for today is Black Sabbath Sabotage. One of my favorite records of all time with that one two punch of Hole in the Sky into Symtom of the Universe. Ozzy's best vocal performance ever is on here in my opinion with The Writ. And I even enjoy the experimental pieces Am I Going Insane and Supertzar. Just a fantastic record... the cover on the other hand....

Pick #1: Kansas's Song For America/Masque. Originally both were planned to be tied for my #2 pick but I feel like as much as I love Black Sabbath, Kansas has probably been the band I've been listening to just a little bit more consistently as of late, hence the last minute switch, but there really isn't much separating my top half of my list. (also, I got to see Kansas in concert in the North Charleston area so that plays a factor as well). My 1985 list might not be updated very frequently due to a busy schedule coming up and truth be told my list is incomplete but I might change things up as I go along depending on how I feel.

Excellent picks and list!
Physical Graffiti -Led Zeppelin. Either this or Exile on Main Street favorite album ever double singe triple whatever. Hell, it's a home run. 2024 #1 Little Rope -Sleater-Kinney. Sometime I read where band combined their more recent experiments with their old best sound and it works, and often I disagree. Not the case here. Like but don't love their last 2 but this successfully incorporates.
I've been following your picks for 2024 and I'm amazed at how few of them I knew about. This is despite the fact that I bought more than 70 new releases last year, most as CDs and some as digital downloads.

@@Alfred_Domke_antispace-sounds Hello! Thanks for list. I've heard of about 12 of your top 50 and about 8 h/m. I guess that we're mostly unfamiliar with each other's speaks to the sheer volume of bands / releases. Half of my top 50 I became aware of via SoT, and most of those bands I'd never heard of. Cheers!
@@captainbeyond7469 Hey Cap. Those are a two of our favorite things!
@@ykmgeedee Yes good sir. Two magical records. Mick Taylor took the Stones to another level his lead work is legendary one of my favorite players.
Hello, my pick today is another one I haven't owned. I have heard it. It's a good album. Also, I am not ranking my list. The album is Song For America by Kansas. I would go into highlights, but it's easier to tell you what I liked the least. That would be Lonely Street. It's good. It doesn't compare well with the rest of the album. The epic songs are really good. So, as always, enjoy the music. Best wishes to you and your family, Pete.
#1 Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
At the last minute I put this album as my favorite. An emotional choice. I still have my older brother's vinyl. I had it in my hands as a child and I kept looking at the cover, the inside envelope and the lyrics of the songs that were translated into Spanish. Besides “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” is a beautiful tribute to Syd Barrett just like “Wish You Were Here”
As many think, unfortunately, this would be the last time that Pink Floyd would work as a group. Starting with Animals, Waters would take full control of the group. For better and for worse.

CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY...remember the title is about Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Nice to hear that it, at least, got an honourable mention considering it was the 1st album in US history to enter the Billboard album charts at #1 (Canada, too), spent 7 weeks at #1 in the US and 14 weeks at #1 in Canada and was the #1 album of the year for all of 1975 in Canada. It is superbly produced. The songwriting is spot on. The performances are spot on. It is arguably the most cohesive album (in the same breath as TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION and HONKY CHATEAU) in Elton's entire catalogue. Thanks for doing this 1975 countdown. It was mostly entertaining.
Captain was my choice as second favourite. Such a great album and in keeping with all his albums it's the 'deep cuts' l enjoy the most, in this case it's Tower of Babel and Tell Me When the Whistle Blows. Title track is wonderful too.

Day 31. Bad Company - Straight Shooter. 😃👍. Released in March 1975. 3X Platinum. It went Gold within a month of its release. Two big hits were “Good Lovin’ Gone Bad” and “Feel Like Makin’ Love.” More cool Hipgnosis album art in the 1970s. Nobody sings like Paul Rodgers. Totally badass! Mick Ralph rocks! I have loved Bad Company for decades. This is a dead bang classic second album from one the best rock bands of the 1970s. 🔥. “Johnny’s life passed him by like a warm summer day. If you listen to the wind, you can still hear him play.” (from “Shooting Star”). That song still gives me chills after all these years. TGIF! Rock Always! - Heather
****
I was a kid in Rowayton, CT in 1975. It was an awesome place to live as kids on the loose with endless freedom. What I remember well is the song “Love Will Keep Us Together” by The Captain and Tennille that my parents played all of the time. I remember the Jaws craze at Bayley Beach. I loved the Apollo-Soyuz Mission in the Summer of 1975. It was this year that I modestly began my stamp collection that exploded into a full blown hobby by 1976 with the Bicentennial. I was still mostly listening to my radio for music in 1975. Most of the music on my list here was not music that I knew well in 1975. Today, all of these albums are in my collection (all on CD, but I do have some on vinyl from my later teen years as well). With only ten (10) choices for me this month, I just went with albums that I consider longtime friends along with pals who represent musical turning or returning points for me. I have to apologize to Eric Carmen and Wings who could have easily appeared on this short list. Goodbye 1975. Now onto 1985. Yes, please! - H.

Singles from Song for America
"Song for America"
Released: April 1975
The album was reissued in remastered format on CD in 2004. The 10-minute title track was edited down to three minutes for release as a single. The 45 R.P.M. edit resurfaced 29 years later as a bonus track on the remastered release, which provided improved sound as well as expanded liner notes, rare photos, and a live version of "Down the Road".
The cover painting for the Kansas album Song for America is an eagle designed by Peter Lloyd. Lloyd also designed the album's logo.
The back cover of the album features a photo of the band with the words "Hi, we're a band."
One reviewer described the cover as a "stylized crab." The band found this description funny because they thought the reviewer was misidentifying the eagle on the cover.
Great history this month for us. Thank you Vipe

Hi Pete & everyone. Dave here. Fabulous pick of yours - could have been my number one, but I went with it yesterday. For my pick, i'm going with my all-time favourite US band. It's SONG FOR AMERICA by KANSAS. A stunning mix of blues-rockers and prog epics, with the band pulling together a variety of styles and Steve Walsh singing as well as he's ever done. Of the bluesy tracks, Lonely Street is brooding and masterful. The title track, a prog history lesson, is a definite Kansas Top Fiver for me, and a live staple (they've played it every time I've seen them). The two big prog epics (Lamplight Symphony and Incomudro) are bombastic but, in typical style, they incorporate some beautiful, tender passages, with Robbie Steinhardt's romantic violin, and Kerry Livgren's piano stylings (shades of Liberace, maybe, but it's wonderful). And they build to some magical climaxes.
Hi Dave, great way to finish!

# 1 Bob Dylan: Blood on the tracks
For me, there can be no other #1. It is not only one of the greatest records in Dylan's huge discography and in rock music in general according to many real and supposed experts, but it is also by far my favorite album by this artist. On no other record do Dylan's lyrical abilities and the music enter into such a successful symbiosis. A masterpiece from a single source, in which you can feel the underlying painful and beautiful experiences in every second. As its best song says: “Tangled Up in Blue”.

#1! Toys in the Attic
1975!! What a year for music!
No doubt about it, this album was the catapult for me. Rock and roll over got me into Hard Rock, Aerosmith became my band in '76, hearing Walk this way and Dream on via the radio.
This is their best, it has more organic sound than Rocks, which is 99.9% as good, which I think the overall sound is even better, with the perfect studio magic.BUT there's something about the variety of song structures and originality on Toys. I think the choruses on most of these make the cake! Not going to belabor each song, Just have to listen!

Final day of the month is Face The Music by the Electric Light Orchestra.
The fifth album from the Brummie band. The first with bassist Kelly Groucutt and cellist Melvyn Gale. A bit more 'radio friendly', compared to their earlier stuff, but still that big orchestral/symphonic sound mixed with Jeff Lynne's love of The Beatles. Opener Fire On High opens with a genuine back masked voice (Drummer Bev Bevan saying "The music is reversible but time is not. Turn back, turn back, turn back, turn back"), before some discordant strings before the band kick in with a flourish. Given what they were known for, it is rather proggy. Mainly instrumental but with a choir adding vocalisations. Waterfall up next. ELO at their most ELO-ish. Jeff's love of The Beatles shining through. The band sounding wonderful. Track 3 is the hit single. Originally written as a 'filler' to make the album a little bit longer, it was a hit all over the world. A bit of a disco feel to it, but the string section on the solo - heavily phased, making it a bit different from the usual dance floor fillers. Nightrider closes side 1. The intro reminds me of the intro of Strawberry Fields Forever, no bad thing, let's be honest. A big chorus stops it being a straight steal. Lots of backing vocals and the strings giving it the true ELO sound. Side 2 opens with Poker. Probably the heaviest thing the band ever did. A big guitar riff opens before Bev Bevan rattles around his kit and and the synth bubbles away before Jeff and Kelly share lead vocals. I can't help but wonder if Ginger Wildheart is a fan of this because it could be him and CJ singing together over a loud Wildhearts-ian guitar riff. Probably the only ELO song you can headbang to. The string filled mid section changes the mood before it gets as heavy as balls again. Strange Magic was released as a single but unlike Evil Woman, didn't do any business, only attaining the lower reaches of the charts. Again, Jeff's Beatles fanboy shines through. Down Home Town is a country style reel - it quotes Dixie and features female vocals from Marge Raymond. Acoustic guitar and a Dylan-esque vocal from Jeff on the verse, before the true ELO sound comes out for the chorus. A proper foot tapper. The album closes with One Summer Dream, a ballad. Lush strings and big backing vocals make this an archetypal ELO ballad. Their next album would take them a step or two up the ladder, but I'll talk about that next January when it celebrates it's 50th anniversary.
A couple of honourable mentions:
Young Americans - David Bowie
Original Soundtrack - 10CC
Nighthawks At The Diner - Tom Waits
Go Girl Crazy - The Dictators
and you have to mention Alive - Kiss.
40 year Anniversaries next month. Some beltin' albums in that lot.
There we are at the final day of January, and at our final 1975 albums picks. My personal pick today goes to
1. PINK FLOYD, Wish You Were Here.
This is not only my favourite album from 1975, it is also my favourite album of the band. (If I got the information right, it is David Gilmour’s and Richard Wright’s personal favourite too.) Only 5 tracks here, but each one of them is so much epic and progressive, with the opener “Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts I-V” being such a beautiful start, where especially David and Richard are shining with the guitar and keyboard parts. Guest musician Dick Parry has a great sax solo at the end of this 13 minute piece, leading to the kinda scary and haunting song “Welcome To The Machine” with heavy synth sounds, ending side 1.
Side 2 opens with the song “Have A Cigar”, which also is great, though I always wondered why they needed Mr. Roy Harper doing the vocals on here. The title track following maybe is the hidden gem on the album, with twin acoustic guitar playing, and absolutely beautifully recorded. One could argue that this is just a simple ballad with some nice lyrics, but the way it was refined on the record has put it to another dimension.
And finally, we get to “Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts VI-IX”, which is the 12 minute epic closer of the album, with Richard Wright’s menacing sounding synth lines. Great guitar, bass and drums playing, and also great singing of course. Great synth-based ending, written by Richard.
Of course, there is a need to mention the two other members of the band, beside David and Richard. Nick Mason maybe is an underrated drummer in public, but he always did an excellent job on their albums. Roger Waters has done a really great job with the writing on here, also with the singing on the “Shine” parts, and for sure, all the four of them (+ Syd Barrett at their earlier 60s stage) were equally important in the 70s. Sadly, up from the 80s, Roger’s behaviour and ego led to his departure from the band and to this day ongoing hostilities towards the other guys, especially at David. As for his personal political agendas, I won’t leave any comment on here. I didn't care about him anymore, since the time he had left the band, and I never was interested to get the album "The Final Cut".
“Wish You Were Here” could have deserved a mention from myself, when I have referred from my time of 1971-1977 (storytelling month of December), but I had Floyd earlier there with the “Meddle” album, which I already got in 1972, and it hasn’t been on my intention to feature a band or solo artist twice. I also got a copy of “Atom Heart Mother” and “The Dark Side Of The Moon” at earlier time.
“Wish You Were Here” actually is the fourth one I got in my personal chronology, but still the one I mostly love from this band. I love “Meddle”, “The Dark Side Of The Moon” and “Animals”, but personally, their 1975 release is their favourite album for me, and will remain that way.

Good morning (afternoon, evening or night), Pete. A great SoT selection to end the month and fine list of honorable mentions. Personal pick today? Definitely a fan-boy choice with the sixth studio album of this American musical wizard released in May on the Bearsville label - Initiation by Todd Rundgren. An interesting dichotomy of an album with the first side consisting of six songs and side two consisting of one piece of music - A Treatise on Cosmic Fire - which is a multi-part progressive piece with Todd playing substantially all the pieces acknowledging Roger Powell with synthesizer programming. For a list of all the various musicians on side one - including Edgar Winter, Rick Derringer, Dan Hartman, David Sanborn, Lee Pastora and various members of the band Utopia - please refer to Wikipedia or another source. Includes some of Todd's most progressive work - certainly up to that time -and it took several road trips and listens to come to appreciate side two. The songs on side one include some tracks that would sound at home on other Todd or Utopia albums. Some favorites from that side include Real Man (the only single released0, Fair Warning, The Death Of Rock And Roll and Fair Warning. It did chart only in the U.S. up to #86. Perhaps not an album for everyone, but as a long-time follower of Todd and his music, this album seems a bit underrecognized so promoting it today. Thanks, Pete. Still working on the list for February.
Honorable mentions? So many to mention but have to include Venus and Mars by Wings, Alive! by Kiss, Jasmine Nightdreams by Edgar Winter, Blues For Allah by The Grateful Dead, The Afro-Eurasian Eclipse by Duke Ellington, and The Great Fatsby by Leslie West. So many others but stopping there.

Long Live 1975!!!
1. Renaissance - Scheherazade and other Stories - One of my favorite albums by the band. The title track is such a rich, multi-layered track that deserves to be far-better known. Ocean Gypsy is beautiful, and Vultures Fly High has a lot of bounce to it. However, for me the masterpiece on the album is Trip to the Fair, which is beautiful, yet also creepy and haunting.
Honorable Mentions: Steely Dan - Katy Lied; Alice Cooper - Welcome to my Nightmare; Gary Wright - Dream Weaver; Lynyrd Skynyrd - Nuthin’ Fancy; War - Why can't we be Friends; Gordon Lightfoot - Cold on the Shoulder; Joni Mitchell - The Hissing of Summer Lawns

28/31
Great pick and list, Mordrid!
Hello everyone, here we go with Day 31 and my #1 pick of 1975. No curve balls or jaw dropping revelations and Gary: no Horns needed for an album that, for me, has absolutely no filler in sight, with even the "lesser" tracks being several notches above most of their contemporaries' best efforts. It's simply the best double studio album of all time. Bar none. Of course, it's...
LED ZEPPELIN "Physical Graffiti" (Swansong)
You want epics? You got 'em, In My Time Of Dying, In The Light, Ten Years Gone and Kashmir, of course but the album is built on a multitude of classic, Page-driven rockers, Custard Pie, The Rover, Night Flight, The Wanton Song, Sick Again and the monumental Trampled Underfoot which, if pressed, I'd have to consider as my favourite Page riff of the lot! Factor in the slightly folkier, acoustic numbers like Bron-Yr-Aur and Black Country Woman, or the gentle Down By The Seaside that provide light and shade, and you've got an album that's brilliantly varied and balanced, with a production - again by Page - that let's Bonzo's drums crash and caress behind JPJ's metronomic bass playing (and occasional piano or keyboard tinkle!), as well as giving Percy Pkant the full range in which to exercise That Voice.
In closing, I'll just say I love a ton of 70s Classic Rock, both British and American, Blackmore has always been my guitar hero, and I will forever be a fan of Purple, Lizzy, Quo, Queen, but if I was put on the spot, I'd say this was, and remains, the absolute pinnacle of 70s classic rock.
Finally, as ever, here's my list for the month just gone, plus a few HM's at the end. See you all tomorrow fir 1985 - if I can work out how to squeeze a list of 114 albums into 28 days..

Finally, it looks as if Andy Mudrock's never-ending technical issues have sadly forced him to call time on his SoT involvement. Its been a pleasure, sir, and may he who must not be named and his army of gremlins be forever cursed. Look after yourself, and keep rocking!
Gremlins took my comment away Iain. Will keep this one shorter so as to not attract their attention. A fine pick...deserving of a #1 spot in most cases....it's just that I found a different favourite This Time Around!
@@iainhead9898Hello Iain, Terrific #1 pick and list
What a fantastic January Sir Iain!
Hail hail 75! No doubt I would like 97% of what's on your list! Appreciate your in-depth writings!
On to the '80s! Looks like you need to have a leap year!
My number one too, Iain. One of the masterpieces of rock music. For my list next month, I'll have to put to an honorable mention per day. Too much good stuff in 1985
@@ramonace4770Thanks Ramon, I'm having to do the same next month... plus an AOR pick too, so every day a threefer!!!
