Mayor's of villages, towns and cities with less than 100k people work full time jobs! They drive there own vehicle! They DO NOT have personal security let alone spend millions on it! They don't pay themselves 300k then pass a bill that states the incoming mayor can only make 25k to keep someone from running against you! They don't drive there small village 7 million dollar in debt then hide the books from everyone! The other Mayor's don't change the locks on all the Municiple buildings so no other official can get in! They don't spend 52k on a Xmas tree that the trustees voted down getting! They don't spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on an ice skating rink and to maintain it! Then name it after your illigitatmate daughter! Then doesn't let anyone skate on it! The councilwoman's opinion that the protest meeting should take place in South Holland because that is where the Township office is located is just that, her opinion. This meeting is being held within Thornton Township and is available to all residents in the township to attend. It can be held anywhere within the township, and to suggest it's wrong to hold it in Calumet City is just without merit. Also, since this gathering is in effect, a government protest, a permit is NOT required. This is NOT the same as a high school reunion, or a wedding, or some other private event that does require a permit as she said. This is a public event for the sole purpose of redressing the government which is a first amendment right, and it is unlawful to require a permit for constitutionally protected activities. She may WANT permits to be issued, but it is unlawful to require them under this circumstance. As courts have ruled time and again, the constitution IS THE PERMIT for such activities, and it would be unlawful for any other branch of government to require a permit for this protected activity. Just like solicitors going door to door in a community need a permit, UNLESS they are a religious organization who does not need a permit as it is freedom of religion, protected under the first amendment and no permission is required. It would be no different than a government protest gathering on the sidewalks of Calumet City. The police are there for traffic control and security, and the protesters cannot be required to pay the police overtime, or have to get a permit for constitutionally protected activity. The majority of communities know these things BTW. She just needs to be brought up to speed in terms of what is legal and not legal to do. And you DO NOT need insurance to conduct a government protest.

The Alderwoman is correct, if a worse case scenario becomes an issue, and there is injury to the citizenry, among the first questions asked is what is the insurance company handling the indemnification…if no insurance was obtained for the event the township/village/city will be held liable.
