Also, former Soviet states became free. What Gorbach got in return from the West was the gift of NATO expansion. Gorbachev was a nice guy but he did not realize that in the West he was dealing with were tough guys who wanted to dominate the planet. NATO expansion was carried out by Bill Clinton and George W Bush who did not appreciate that Gorbachev's niceness deserved a niceness in return.

The attack on Ukraine is defensive. To prevent Ukraine becoming a NATO pawn Russia needs something to trade with. People have forgotten that Putin spent much of 2021 trying to negotiate with the West that Ukraine not join NATO. Think about this, NATO started with 11 members and it now has 33. It is natural for Russia to feel afraid of the expansion.
