I remember this and was stationed on a cruiser at the Navy base. We got underway and went to sea to avoid the storm. While out at sea Laura Branigan's hit song "Gloria" was played on the 1MC.

Don Slater looks so, so young. He's still doing WAVY's weather, but now is 'chief meteorologist emeritus.'
Thankfully it didn't end up being the storm of the century.
My mom would have been five years old at the time.
