Valve working with Lenovo is a risk free endeavor for them. The only one at risk with that partnership is Lenovo. Even if Lenovo succeeds in eating into the steam deck sales, it's still a win for Valve because their primary revenue source is selling software. They're goal is to spread steam os and lock more people into the steam ecosystem which would boost software sales.

I recently got a ROG Ally as part of a package deal -- I'd been thinking I might replace my laptop altogether with one of these new handhelds... wow, I'm so glad I didn't go that route.... I find the Ally to be super-clunky, what with Windows/MyAsus/ArmouryCrate/X, Y, Z, libraries, etc.... I'd be kicking myself trying to use that in lieu of an actual laptop.

Its crazy to see how far technology itself has come since 2015, integrated graphics in current AMD processors are able to run heavy hitters like cyberpunk BG3 and RDR2, pretty smoothly granted as long as you lower the settings and resolution accordingly.
Not to mention other new technologies like FSR and AFMF that only further improve performance, it's like all the pieces have fallen in place not only to make steam machines viable, but to make PC gaming itself the most accessible it's been in a while.

No kidding! I had recently picked-up an Xbox Series-X no-disc console, thinking it would be a plug-and-play experience (my last console was a PS-3... more than a decade ago). My money was much better spent after returning that proprietary box....
"Your TV is an Xbox! Your Phone is an Xbox! Your PC is an Xbox!... Oh, you bought an actual Xbox? Well you'll also need Xbox devices, eg. it will ignore your flight-stick, mouse, and keyboard. Oh, also, your Ring camera is an Xbox!..."
That thing also murdered my Fibre router.... apparently everyone with my model of router has the same issue... "nice network stack you've got there! It would be a shame if something wuz to happen to it!"
Do they design these things with only contract and temp workers (and AI) these days?
Meanwhile, the PC master-race with it's (more) open ecosystem can be anything for anyone. Narrow (i.e. MS, Sony, Nintendo too?) consoles are just not worth the trouble, if you ask me. Add-in the new-economy issue of scalpers buying all the stock -- if the manufacturers and distributors don't address that, the market will collapse all the faster.
Consoles are dead, long live Steam Machines and PCs!

At the time the Steam Machines were priced like PCs but only 25% of the Steam library had Linux support. So you pay the same amount as buying a new PC to only play 25% of your games, and there wasn't really anything new it offered. It was a bad deal.
Steam Deck gives us a cheap way to play most of our PC library PORTABLY. So it offers a significant new feature, and it's cheap, and we can play most of our games. It's good value for money.
What a SteamBox would do is provide a cheap way to play most of our PC games on a TV. Thr differences with the Steam Machines are being competitive on price, library size, user experience, and being part of a much more coherent ecosystem together with the Deck.

The problem is that Valve is a software distribution company. If they can do away not having to make hardware, they would. Thus, Valve will not discourage competition in the hardware business as long as they can seamlessly interact with the Steam Library.

Excellent video, BTW. Steam, at that time, fell into the STB carry-over from the late 80s and early 90s. Remember Set Top Box consoles made for television - sometimes known as media center consoles? Commodore Amiga was one of the first with its CDTV32 that flopped due to Commodore crashing and burning from market over saturation and commercial campaign shenanigans(along with such other similar devices like Phillips CD-I and the 3DO) . Well! That carried over into the new millennium with Stadia and OUYA which both suffered from limited power, bandwidth and titles. Steam may of flopped and learned but they went even further to build off of what worked and ditched what didn't - real evolution style. They're in it for the long haul by paying attention to the ecology (broader historical ecosystem) seeking practical diversity and allowing for long-term technical advancement and adaptation i.e. open source rather than proprietary software {Linux based} AND compensating for out dated planned obsolescence engineering by making hardware more easily repairable and upgradeable.

Vulkan.api change all this. Vulkan made DX 10/11/12 game run often better then windows version. Steam os is built from ground up for pc gaming. Steam os 3x it’s built on Arch Linux. Where old steam os 1.0 was on Debian. It wasn’t great, and was learning lesson for Valve.
Windows is NOT built for pc gaming. It was tacked on with window 95, and later DirectX.
vulkan = open source. Windows 10/11 are not. DX 10/11/12 are all bloatware just like windows is.
Pc gaming is better on steam deck. They are proof it works and steam os 3x is proof pc gaming is going be so much better, once both software and hardware vendors see steam os is better future.

I think having proper steam OS with brand recognition and great hardware support is the way to go but its again up to the hardware manufacturers to make good drivers for linux or support open source community drivers being made.
What needs to happen is a higher Linux adoption rate so companies actually develop with Linux in mind. So if we could get the average user onto say Steam OS more companies would step up and recognize Linux. Then all this would filter down to the other distros making the time of the power users more enjoyable also.

If the price is good and the companies don't go crazy launching a bunch of models i think they can succeed. That being said, i highly doubt they will, its likely they'll release a bunch of models with a bunch of different price point and performance, and they value won't be there unless Steam themselves sell the hardware, this is just by a simple fact, companies like Sony and Microsoft can sell consoles with little margin or even at a loss cause they will get money from software sales. Steam machines being sold by other companies must make a decent profit to make sense. And at that point it's better to just buy yourself your own PC custom to your budget and needs

2025 is too soon. They should time it right to have stronger hardware than MS and Sony’s next-gen consoles, rather than being perceived as less powerful. Nintendo’s IP lets them get away with older hardware, but Valve can’t play that game.

Why I think the Steam Machines will fail again IF they actually release and why I think the Steamdeck will be gone within 5 or so years:
Three years in and the Steamdeck is still estimated to be well under 8 million units sold (likely less since the trajectory was just 3 million by the end of 2023) at a moderately high price point while the Switch is ending its 7 year run with 150~ million units sold at a moderate price point while the PS5 is sitting at 65.5 million units sold at its half way (maybe?) mark with a moderately high price point.
The competition in the PC handheld space is getting more competitive (the Ally X is my favorite at the moment) and Bazzite provides PC handheld users a way to have a console-like experience with their Windows 11 centric handhelds.
Also the Switch 2 is just around the corner and the PS5 is selling extremely well while further building its IPs brands via TV shows and seemingly ready to start releasing long overdue first party titles from its marquee studios. I just don't see how a Steam machine can win over people who are outside of the few million people who bought a Steamdeck. I honestly don't see Valve being in hardware five years from now. I know the irrational fans will ignore those numbers, but that's what decides business decisions; numbers.
If both PlayStation and Xbox actually release dedicated hardware that's both forward~ and backwards compatible, I think Valve's hardware ambitions will forever be crushed.

Millions Steam Deck sold is millions more than previous Steam Machine. Microsoft would not stop in converting Windows to walled garden. Valve has no choice but to provide alternative if they want to stay in business.
Steam Machines would be not revolution but an option to people alienated by Windows. This option also keeps Microsoft in check. And Microsoft never stops to alienate its users.

    • @AgentZeroNine1
      @AgentZeroNine1 2 дня назад

@@sergeykishMicrosoft is failing without Valve doing anything. Xbox has lost the majority of its gamers to PlayStation the past two generations and Windows is (slowly) being chipped away by Mac OS and to a much lesser extent, Linux based OS (I'm on Ubuntu and Pop OS).
Also, a couple million more than the last couple of million is still selling a fraction of a fraction of what your direct competitors are selling, which is bad for direct developer support (which has fallen, but Proton is easing that issue). If the Xbox (that's estimated to be around 30 million units sold) is losing money with each hardware being sold still, then that's definitely the case for the Steamdeck. The economics of selling dedicated gaming hardware isn't adding up to something positive for the Steamdeck when you realize both the last gen and current gen Xbox, Sega Dreamcast and Vita outperformed the Steamdeck.

    • @sergeykish

@@AgentZeroNine1 Windows lost to Android but still dominates PC. Microsoft can lock PC to Windows if not kept in check. Switching to Linux would require buying hardware that's much costlier than hardware supported by Windows.
Microsoft Store apps can't be executed on Linux. Running them bring same issues as Nintendo emulation. Converting Windows to walled garden means end to Steam business. The economics is obvious.

@kuhpunkt that the metrics for success are so different.
