What's wild is how they were able to turn a slow, melancholic song into an absolute banger of a battle theme. I still personally prefer Brilliant Wings for post-game battle themes, but that's just a testament to how good the entire soundtrack is!

My guess as to why the lead guitar is low/homogenized in the mix is because this is a battle track with a relatively average loop time (about 3 mins), while battles in the Xenoblade series can go on for a WHILE, to the point where you're hearing that loop easily 3-4 times in one fight (which would then happen again two steps later when you aggro a different enemy).
I imagine they didn't want the player to be reminded of "oh hey here is this very noticeable, moment in the track I guess we've looped again", so the guitar was deliberately mixed down to something where it blends in more naturally after (many) repeated lessons.
But I could be way off base with this. I agree it doesn't sound great in the mix, though I can't say I noticed while playing the game lol.
Great video btw. I love when you feature Xenoblade tracks (this is just the second time, right??), they are among my favourite soundtracks of the last couple decades.

my guess is to give focus to the melody, since the song itself is a nod to a previous game’s character and if i was making it, i wouldn’t want to have the guitars over shadow everything. also in my honest opinion i just prefer softer guitars anyway so i am biased in this response

The Xenoblade series is famous for their melodic power ballads, fast yet gruff electric guitars, and recurring riffs. As another pointed out already, this is actually a remix of another song from Xenoblade 2, "Drifting Soul". That song was a epic poigant song that played at emotional key moments in Xenoblade 2. It kinda became its most well known theme as a result. Here they repurposed it into a battle melody for a returning character from that game. Showing flexibility, adaptivebility, and a great continuity nod for fans.

I think Drifting Souls would be great to react next to, it’s from Xenoblade chronicles 2, the track that this is based off of. The context for the leitmotif makes this theme really nostalgic, since the track is associated with the same character in both the second and third game.

the reason the guitar shredding is not prominent around 11:45 is because this is a main characters theme turned into a battle theme, so they basically remixed a theme completely that was not originally metal and they decided to throw the electric guitars in to give it the energy you want in a battle theme. The guitar never gets to play the actual theme for the character so it's not really important to feature it in the song to convey that this song is about this character. So in context to the game it would be kind of funny if they threw the characters theme under the sound of somebody shredding like crazy.

I love that you brought up the mix, and even though you find it frustrating, I’d argue it is even more so for us who aren’t as musically trained. When you aren’t as well-versed in music composition, you need the mix to properly ‘direct’ you to the part of the music you need to be paying attention to. When the mix doesn’t do this I often hear arguments that it is somehow “more tasteful”. The argument for this is essentially that by not overemphasizing certain instruments at certain time, you can emphasize it in your mind. “It gives the audience the credit that they know what to listen for” is another argument I hear. I couldn’t disagree with this more. I feel like it would be similar if a film director made the entirety of every shot in focus. When everything is in focus, it feels like nothing is

I can't believe I missed this reaction! I've been dying to hear you react and analyse more Xenoblade tracks!
I still think you'd fall in LOVE with the "Torna the Golden Country: Battle!!" theme from Xenoblade 2 and it's hard not to recommend "Moebius Battle" from this game (Xenoblade 3).
Honourable mention to both "Brilliant Wings" from Xenoblade 3 (the hardest I've heard a sax solo go for a videogame plus the counterpart to Kaleidoscopic Core) and "Time to Fight: Bionis Shoulder" from Xenoblade Definitive Edition (which happens to be what "Brilliant Wings" is a remix of).
Though if I had to recommend something absolutely MAGICAL, it wouldn't be a battle theme, it'd be an area theme by the name of "Aurora Shelf (Day)" from Xenoblade 3: Future Redeemed.
Hoping you get more Xenoblade recommendations because I'd love to see them!

I never really noticed the guitar being too low in the mix here, but also songs like Xenoblade 2's "Incoming!" and Falcom Sound Team's "Soshite Aratanaru Michi E (Vantage Master Portable)"(the one from the Falcom Jdk Band 2008 Spring album) are even bigger offenders when it comes to questionably low guitar solo mixing, so maybe my reference point is skewed. Personally I think the bass is the instrument that stands to benefit the most from more presence.

It's popularity probably has less to do with the quality of the track itself and more to do with the song that it samples from, along with the shear audacity to turn a melancholic vocal track into a high-energy battle theme.
If people hadn't already known about Drifting Soul, I doubt this song would've gotten nearly as much attention as it did.
