Excellent 1st half. But ultimately our approach in the 1st leg, and our lack of squad depth, cost us greatly.

I thought we tried to get it done in the first half. Used all of our energy in the first half. We tried to do the same in the second and we simply couldn't. Undone by having no bench yet again. Alonso had the luxury of changing tactics and bring players on, and we couldn't.
I've been supporting West Ham since the mid 70s, and I can honestly say I've never seen them play so well as in that first half

Our players were absolutely shattered on 65 minutes,Alvarez, ward prowse and Antonio were fantastic...but that ref...ive never seen a ref as bad as that....

He was out on his feet mate in the second half. Love him, but he was done, could hardly run and he’s long balls to Bowen were way off and showed he was knackered. As we’re most of team but he seemed the worst to me. I was surprised Ings didn’t come on last ten mins and just put two up front and go for it

@@daviddowns8068 If you were in the stadium you could see him with his hands on his knees, unable to run back etc. he was cooked. Epic effort put in by him.
That was a brilliant performance in the first half and great effort 2nd half.
They changed their shape at half time, were more organised and pushed higher up the pitch and we dropped to cope with that. They were never going to be that bad in 2nd half and were clearly rattled in first 45 mins.
Lack of depth killed us and has hurt us since Christmas. That is on Moyes but also on the rest of club ⚒️
Proud of performance and had 3 magical years of European football and regardless of what you think of Moyes he delivered
It makes the way we approached the first leg even more bizarre. Second half was down to the January window for me. When Cornet came on it should have been for JWP and then moved Kudus centrally. Ref was atrocious. If Paqueta had played tonight that Ref would have definitely booked him just for existing
TBH pacqueta would have got sent off for petulance and theatrics
At one stage during the second half ,Zouma challenged the Ref about a dodgy foul and yellow card , hardly got any words out of his mouth and was shown the yellow card just for standing up to the Ref .. He was awful the amount of time wasting Leverkusen were doing was ridiculous…⚒️😡
I am not sure that Pac would have played better than any of those in our midfield today
Great effort, template for how we should play, January window screwed our European and league campaigns, along with negative tactics in first leg. Now time to move forward with new coach and summer rebuild.
Wasn’t there last night but I wasn’t surprised that we lost momentum in the 10 minutes after half time - which seemed to set the tone for the rest of the game. Fans need to play their part for full 90 minute & be back in their seats at full volume when second half starts. Look at those German fans - at home and away, they’re on it every minute.
I’ve said for years Moyes underachieved with us, not overachieved as the media would have you believe - his insistence on 13 players and the Moyes Megablock is gross negligence considering the players he’s had and destroyed
The ref needs to be investigated because Alonso had a chat with him at HT, no doubt about it
As for the lack of captaincy, Zouma got booked for questioning why Bowen was booked for being fouled - he may have touched the ref but he was itching to send someone off in claret and blue. Zouma and Antonio went to the ref at the end and he was furiously ushering them away - an utter disgrace of a referee and he was got at at HT
Yep good summing up, half time killed it & the Spanish ref should've given himself a red card, I bet he was Alonso's best man at his wedding.
A fully fit Bowen would've scored twice & it was obvious Zouma Cress & Ant were gonna tire & Alonso knew it, all blame lays with Moyes' tactics subs, lack of squad depth & buying and selling in the transfer windows.

Gonzo, this is a great time to say, we should be chuffed with our team. We done everything we want the West Ham team to do. the only niggle I have is that we have no back up on the bench, I still cant believe that there was so many yellow card given out, 9 I believe over all teams, is he on bonus for how many cards he shows...LOL........
Second oldest team in the PL, it showed in the second half, players were unable to keep the press and intensity up. Lack of investment in a striker and old defenders cost us.
We did well in the first half but just like in the first leg Alonso made the subs & yet again they changed the game for him. Still the players gave it their all so can't fault them but having such a weak bench is down to Moyes for not strengthening it despite spending half a billion.
This. Ian darke and Robbie savage were complaining about no Benni or Fornals... ignoring the fact it was Moyeses fault they went

First half we played a high line with lot of pressing should have finished our chances and 2nd half the players ran out of steam, Alvarez was immense in the first half, 2nd half he was tired and couldnt track back, went deeper.Lets not forget Agured got injured and ogbonna came in, so we couldnt play high line with oggy cresswell against frimpong.The ref was a disgrace
Proves it is the tactics as to why the lads stop at the half way line in most games. This is what the boys can do (even without Paq, Emerson, Mav…), so why is this style mothballed for 90% of games?
There isn’t a game I don’t see moyes shouting the boys to get up the pitch

Leverkusen actually had that exact style/tactics before Alonso took over. Since he's there they've always had the longer breath in the end.
Proud of the first half but what the hell did Moyes say at half time? I get being tired at 70+mins but the first 10-15mins of the second we shouldn’t have been. And as for the ref he really was fucking awful!!!!!!! Atrocious
Zouma did speak to ref but got booked so if he used his captaincy to speak to ref again he would have got sent off.

Unfortunately it came down to the size, and quality , of the squad, Moyes appreciates the backing of the board in the transfer market, but he has also said they needed a bigger squad.

Stadium looked empty and lacked atmosphere for 10-15mins of the 2H.
Did more people think it more important to go for a drink/food/piss at HT rather than creating the fantastic atmosphere of the 1H? Just when the team needed lift.

Heroes all of them last night, should have bagged a second in the first half. Looked knackered at 60mins where leverkussen gained the upper strength. They had proper subs where we had none, and that's why they won. They drew on the night with a little help from the ref. Now way were they going to lose their record to little West ham.
Alvarez should have stayed on as he might have put a foot in to close down the goal and if we'd got a second with him on the pitch then we would have needed his energy in extra time. Strange player to choose to take off as he was full of running.
He had no energy left. At 60 mins he was basically walking pace

Was always going to be a hard ask. Been a great 3 years. I don't think we'll get Europe domestically so best to just refocus next year. Whoever is manager will have a task on their hands with this squad and owner... the latter of whom I hope leaves the club.

Thay were rattled in the first ,half ,and we were unlucky not to have got 2 goals.Second half we were cream crackerd,but they didn't bother us much ,they got a jammy goal.Notjing but tespect for the boys.

No one wanted to speak to the ref for Antonio because the ref was showing cards to anyone that spoke to him. It was mental. I think zouma got a card just asking the ref something.
That’s right and what a shocking decision that was - isn’t the captain allowed to do that - the referee was very very poor last night
Zouma got the yellow card for touching him, not just „asking something“. Not to say the ref wasn’t on a massive power trip, but let‘s not rewrite history.

There was one rune on 60 mins, he supported the attack. Bayer counter attacked, and he had zero energy. Moyes should have made changes on 60mins, and made about 3. Moyes lost this in the second half. he thinks if the other team hasnt scored, then his tactics are perfect. its pure arrogance

we respected them too much in the first leg and the lack of any decent subs and no paq or emerson is what ultimately lost us the game unreal first 45 showed them what we can do 2nd half subs changed the game....

Sadly, in many ways we have a weakened team then last year when we won the ECL.
Bit harsh,we were knackered in the 2nd half and had no subs,plus they made the changes and the ref screwed us,dont think our intent/approach was any different
If our fans were like that every home game we would win half those games we have lost there. It's was intimidating. Leverkusen were awful in the first half. If we had good subs we could have won that.
My mexican machine ran out of gas. But we took him out and we got scored on 5 minutes later. If we were gonna gut the defensive midfield, we should have thrown some of the more attaking type players. Go down swinging.

No, for instantly following and touching him after he made a decision. They have talked about this on German TV as well, and said that most refs gonna yellow card you if you instantly grab the refs arm or shoulder and "want to talk"... You can question the ref, but not like this

Agree but got to give alonso credit…..he changed players and tweaked the tactics in second half and stopped us….fair play but we run out of steam and we had no bench to turn to and that lays at the door of Moyes and the club…..the referee was disgusting….worse I have seen in a long time
How many times will our club be stitched-up by dodgy, bent referees and VAR. That Spanish referee was appalling. Even Moyes complained, and that takes something.
The reason that there was nobody in the ref's face in the second half is that he would have sent anyone off who did so - most of the right players were already on a card. He was trying to provoke Antonio into getting himself sent off, and he nearly succeeded.

There is only 1 man to blame for last night. It’s not Moyes, it’s not the ref. It’s David Sullivan, for not backing the manager or the director of football he appointed. All we needed in January was a couple of fast forwards and a cm. He chose to not invest and let players go depleting an already thin squad. Can’t wait for that little rat to sell up.

Sorry....but if we played like we did in the first half all season....we would be totally knackered & would have fell off the pace long ago....simply due to the lack of squad depth. Nothing to do with moyes & his so called negative tactics, he has done the best with what he has available...just a lack of investment by the owners, injuries, suspensions, poor refereeing ...& a fixture pile up (not helped by TV screw ups) The important thing is, we were brave, had a go & gave everything for the badge....you don't do that if the manager has lost the dressing room! Proud of you Irons....but a bit fearful of what the future will bring if Moyes is forced out, despite taking us to 3 quarter finals in 3 years....including a trophy of course. Only my opinion & time will tell xx

Second half they should have kept on pressing and should have played the way they did first half, and get those goals in. That should have been the gameplan.
