Travel in Italy - What to see in Italy: a trip to Irpinia (Hirpinia)
I was in one of the various parades of the Carnival in Montemarano, in my Province of Avellino located uphills in Naples region; here I was in the procession of the famous clarinetist Pasqualino Ziviello with the trusted accordionists Michele Storti, Nicola and Nunzio. In Montemarano Tarantella is played and danced all day long until following dawn in the wake of the great popular tradition of our Tarantella that along with Pizzica belongs to the Taranta family, the soul of our Italian Popular Music. In the Tarantella of Irpinia the use of the Lydian musical scale is typical, as it has the fourth degree increased, as the Goddess Cybele came from the region of Lydia in modern Turkey. Irpinia is the motherland of Tarantella: 3,000 years ago the Temple of the Goddess Cybele stood on the impervious Monte Partenio (the Sanctuary of the Modonna di Montevergine, known as "Slave Mother" for her black face was built on its remains), where still today we go on pilgrimage playing and singing on the 2nd February, the day of Candlemas (date of the archaic "lupercali" of the Samnites and the Romans). The Carnival in Montemarano preserves all the ancient symbolism of those ancient processional parades that are held on two rows, where once the "Coribanti" dressed in colorful clothes, especially in white and red as well as today in Montemarano many mature and elderly men called "ball chiefs" are seen dressed in the same way, with the same cone hat and holding the stick that was once typical of Bacchantes (the "thyrsus" that was once covered in ivy). This territory was known as Hirpinia and has kept the current name of Irpinia, because the totemic animal of the Hirpini was the wolf (the hirpus), although before their arrival it was the bull and this animal has been preserved in the toponyms of many villages (Taurasi, Torella dei Lombardi, etc.). Our Lady of Montevergine protects all people sexually diverse (nowadays She is venerated by the transgender, homosexual and lesbian women who meet here in Irpinia every 2nd February to go in procession to her Sanctuary), but the old Coribanti of the Goddess Cybele and the Bacchantes of the God Dionysus used to be sexually diverse in the same way, abandoning themselves free love. It's a joy for us to see children, young people, adults and the elderly who play and dance the TARANTELLA all together without generational divisions and occupying the public spaces of the Communities: all this represents for us "Irpini" the most deeply rooted form of civil resistance to globalization. Here in Irpinia tradition is not a memory of a past time to be recalled, but a living root on which the plant of life grows and renews itself on the values of the ancestors: in every village or town celebration, party, wedding party and event we play and dance our TARANTELLA using the dancing form of "ball in couples" since processional TARANTELLA is reserved only for Carnival.
