The local group FOLK IN PROGRESS celebrates the collective ritual of the Popular Feast being led on stage by the extraordinary singer and accordion player Antonio Della Vecchia; as it happens all over our Irpinia, these ritual celebrations are held in the main Square of the town (always attached or in the nearby of the main Church) while the main street is lined with coloured illuminations. This video features amongst dancing people the very King of Italian Tarantella Dancers, the famous 63yo Tonino Boccella (nicknamed "fire") along with his wife Angelina Biancardo.
TARANTELLA MONTEMARANESE (or TARANTELLA DI MONTEMARANO) is TARANTELLA from IRPINIA, a ritual music that has been played for almost 3.000 years in Hirpinia, as the main Temple of Magna Graecia was located in this land and was dedicated to Goddess Cybele (Cibele in Italian), the ancient Great Mother and this very tambourine rhythm as well as the Lydian musical scale” played by woodwind or reed instruments (ancient Ciaramella or Clarinet nowadays) survived well preserved in its original form. The group FOLK IN PROGRESS performs “our Hirpinian Tarantella” in the usual atmosphere of collective joy that it creates during all its exhibitions, events where people dance and sing celebrating the most archaic and authentic values of the Hirpinian communities and of the whole Sacred Southern Italy, values that are based on energy and spiritual sharing, sociability and well-being. In addition to the leader Antonio, the Folk In Progress are also lined-up by the great Nicola Carbonara on the accordion, Tiziano Granese on the sax and clarinet, Settimio Abbondando on keyboards and Lidia Di Paola on vocals. Popular Music from Hirpina finds one of its most vital and active centers just here in Nusco, land of the Tarantella and country of the 91-years-old Mayor Ciriaco De Mita (former Italian Prime Minister)... long life to Hirpinia!
