Brother, I've been in the industry a long time and like most of us I know how it all works. But I could never explain it like you did. I watch all your videos, and many videos from other videos...but, this one BY FAR the best video I've ever seen on the internet. AWESOME Your excitement and love for these wonderful animals shines through, makes the videos fun to watch as well
I second that, fantastic explanation for someone researching here to get into BP’s. Probably just start out with 1 and as I pick up knowledge debate dabbling with tiny scale breeding. This perfect explanation in a video is a like, save and earned a sub!
@@cobra27ca I wouldnt waste the money bro. I did it for 23 years successfully, but now its honestly a joke. I sold my entire collection, as well as rat breeding business last year. The Govt will also eventually step in and shut it down, because no big breeder is paying the taxes they should be. Trust me, they are all being watched heavily
That Axanthic male is absolutely gorgeous! Great video, too. I know a good bit about genetics, being a biologist, but I still love watching other people talk about their snakes and seeing the enjoyment and energy they get out of the animals. Really refreshing!
Thank you for making this video. I've watched it a few times and it's really stuck with me on how I plan to proceed into breeding recessive lines. Keep up the great content.
Looking to start my own breeding projects and I subscribed before the video even ended because the explanation was on point, very down to earth, and very helpful! Looking forward to browsing the rest of your uploads and learning all that I can!
Wished I had watched this before I started but you gave such good information I know where to adjust things now. Best explanation I’ve seen thus far. Easy to understand and remember.
ive been breeding rats and mice for a few years now, small scale especially if i try and compare to the USA market (im In south africa) but have lately thought of starting ball Pythons and can honestly say these guys are the most informative and helpful videos on the market. ill be in the USA in summer time next year and would love to take you guys out for a beer and come and see your collection
Matt. Great information. Very helpful. My older daughter and I thank you for taking the time to do these videos. It really helps us understand what we need to do and expect with the project we are working on. Thanks. Gray and Miranda
I wish this video existed 3-4 years ago when I started purchasing my snakes. I'm in a good position now... but this would have made life so much easier back then, when trying to decide "what to buy". My Piebald male should be giving me 3 clutches of 100% het pied offspring, and another clutch of 1/2 pied (bred to a 100% het female)... and then I'm hoping to prove out my 50% het Ghost female this year... but having this information before I got all my current snakes would have saved me a TON of time. Great video, keep them coming!
So excited. Took your advice and watched the two female VPI axantic visuals lock to my HET VPI male coral glow enchi yellowbelly. I've raised these for 2 loñg years. And can't be more happy to actually listen to someone for once. Hopefully get eggs from these 3.
Another outstanding video sir. By far yours are the most straight forward and understandable on youtube. I'm currently a small time hobbyist (total of 8 in the collection) putting together some cool projects in the near future. This video really helped convince me pairing my male pastel clown to my female leopard should be the start of something special later down the road. I actually have a male calico that came from you that's ready to pair with my female spider (spiders rock!) Hopefully get a few caliders next year as well. Anyway....job well done and keep em coming!
I THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH FOR TH8S VIDEO!! I WISH I WOULD HAVE SEEN THIS ONE SOONER, NOW I FINALLY GET IT!! I'VE WATCHED SOANY VIDEOS FROM MULTIPLE PEOPLE, UNTIL I AM BLUE IN THE FACE, AND NO ONE HAS EXPLAINED IT QUITE SO WELL, I STILL DIDN'T UNDERSTAND IT UNTIL NOW THAT I WATCHED THIS VIDEO AND NOW MULTIPLE LIGHT BULBS TURNED OK IN MY BRAIN, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!
Great job explaining the recessive gene matt and of course i did it backwards visual female and het males. Lol never to late to start going the other way.
great video, but i didnt see it sooner, as i am doing it the long way! just got my first pair of visual pieds! started a tri stripe project with a male het tri ph pied bred to a female het for a new gene last year(she proved out this year) making a couple possible triple het females! hope to see my albino hets prove out this year!
I absolutely love the way you educate me you make me want to just buy a female clown it's so tempting they're so hard to find on morphmarket right now and they are expensive which I don't have right now the money to spend but it is my dream to have one female clown in my collection and maybe sometime later within this year I will be able to.
I love your videos and i think all Of your advice is gonna help a ton , thats the exact plan i made for my tri stipe project looking forward to more videos :)
sweet!!!! i love the information you gave on this video yesterday i was explaining to a friend of mine about the same thing so I'm going to share this video tho him to give him a better view on recessive co dominant and dominant so this has been a good help thanks again!!!!!
Can you do a video of all about axanthic? I have a VPI baby and she triggered my interest with the line overall. I know you don’t have that specific line, but I enjoy your content over all and would love a video of just your axanthic line (if I’ve missed it please let me know where to find it!). :)
So come the new year I will be looking for a snake like the baby you pulled out at 8:50 if I am a non Patreon person how might I go about getting a snake like that from you?? I know this is an older video and I got about two months before I get me one I am interested in getting one from you. Been watching all your vids and taking my 7 years of keeping ball's to the next level, I love watching and learning from you!! I have three females two to grow out and one ready to breed that I have had for the 7 years, she is huge and I would love to breed her to something really cool :) And again thank you for teaching and making the vids.
MJ Axanthic was what got me into ball pythons, my little visual male is amazing. I was just wondering if people had done work with VPI/SK hets? I never hear about such double recessives (though SK is almost non-existant in Canada, its MJ or some VPI) and I was wondering if the axanthics are entirely incompatible (as in hatchlings dont make it) or its just seen as taboo amoung keeps? Thanks for the awsome videos Matt!
hey is there any chance of you guys doing a video on carpet python breeding.about what you can mix, morphs, age and weights, cooling.things like that would be awsome!!!! keep up the good work always watch your vids!
Phil Russell it will be awhile. unfortunately our large female carpet passed away due to egg binding last year. we are raising up another female though.
Subbed! I love ball pythons and hope to become a breeder. They’re fkn awesome animals. And thanks for putting so much effort into your vids and sharing. Gonna binge watch some today lol.
Hi! This was a great video, very informative! Like you I absolutely love the Spider but I’ve heard the “wobble” could be quite detrimental to the snake. Strikes for food being off, accidentally biting themselves and turning themselves upside down. What are your thoughts? (I am very new to this hobby, extremely green ☺️) Thank you 🙏🏻
this is probably a long shot lol but I'm looking to start breeding my buddy is a great breeder and I speak with him but I'm thinking on trying to start with champagne. I love what champagne does do you think that is a good gene to start with?
I'm pretty sure the MJ line has proven incompatible with both VPI and SK. Don't forget the black axanthic (from VPI but not compatible) either! And red axanthic (even though its co-dom).
DJKarll yup, black axanthic and the het red axanthic were totally different genes. I wasn't aware if they had fully tested the MJ line yet to see if it was actually SK, vpi, or joliff. while I love axanthic, the multiple lines are a PITA.
Awesome videos! You do a wonderful job and your great at marketing yourself!!!! I have a question, I am finally able to start establishing a small collection to start for breeding Dom and Co-Dom projects in the future. I want to start with babies to raise and learn before I jump into something, so it will be a while before I attempt to breed. I wanna do it right and produce beautiful snakes. Do you have any advise a little bit different about breeding these genes instead of recessive? Any help or advice would be appreciated!
Ok thank you very much! Just wanted to double check see if anything was different. Keep up the awesome videos your personality is great, I really enjoy watching them! Have a great day!
I have a male BEL. I bought her from our local reptile shop. I was told to breed him to a normal to see if my BEL has some recessive genes. What do you think?
Hi Matt, I wonder if you could explain how I might make a scaleless Palmetto, I have a female visual Palmetto and a female het palmetto, het scaleless with plans to buy a visual male palmetto but can't get my head round how to get the double visual, many thanks
My only recessive project is an even longer route. I have three het Clown. 1 male 2 female... what are the odds I eventually pick up a visual male before my hets are ready to go?? Lol
I think the example you give has some merit if you plan on holding back a bunch of females to breed to powerhouse males, but my favorite way is to get co-dom females that have genes I want to combine with the recessive, and then create comdom het recessives to breed back to daddy recessive. Then in 2 generations you can get something more interesting than what you started with. You also don't have to worry about people lying about hets that way because you know what you bred. You can even pick females with different codoms you want to combine together later down the road with your recessive. edit: haha later in the video you talk about doing that but with codom het recessives. you are so on the ball in this video.
love the vid. this is exactly how I was thinking about getting into the clown Gene buying a visual male, but I'm going to breed it to females I already have to mix in pastel and butter genes
That makes getting hets very difficult for someone who doesn't know any breeders! Do u use clown and pied markers to help? How can u know for sure if you don't know the breeder? What am I missing with axanthic? Why are just a few truly colorless??
I don't really see a reason too. If they ever escaped the house they would die. I also have the room sealed (door runners etc) so on the rare event we have an escape they don't go far.

So can you help me I’ve got a toffeeno female I was going to put my citrus pastel banana pied male to her what do you think I could get if you can help please
I️ am wanting to breed my male cinnamon ball python he’s almost a year old and I’m looking for a adult female ghost het albino how do you determine the price on the babies?
herpetology first, call me an overachiever but im interested in learning as much about all three as i can ^^ Ive always loved reptiles i used to pick up the lizards and garden snakes out of our backyard when i was little. it freaked my mom out so much lol
AerotheVampire man good luck! I honestly self taught, my day job is in law enforcement of all things. this is my passion and hopefully a retirement supplement.
thank you i am super excited to start school in the fall and when i finally finish school i plan on purchasing my first pair of pythons :) i think its awesome that you taught yourself how to do this its amazing. i would love to do some hands on learning while im in school
this is the project i' working on now i have a pastel mojave ax. het a mojave het ax.and a firefly double het clown trying to find two more females then a clown
Hi do you need to wash your hands each time you handle a snack, so you get off the sent of the first one, sorry new to this dont own one just watch at mo
It also depends on what the "het" is for. Try to buy something that is het Sunset... last time I looked MALE het Sunset are selling for $2,000....... and good luck finding a female 100% het sunset. But like he said, different morphs are worth different prices. Het Clown is worth more than het Ghost, etc, etc.
Wyoming Reptiles I promise one is coming very soon. trying to get setup the way I want with lightning etc before doing a video, but we are working on it!!
Brandon Theis hello, and thanks for your interest! we currently have nothing for sale, but have 15 hatchlings just waiting to get to size and a full incubator at the moment. we will post on Facebook when they are ready!
I notice when you take your snakes out u just pick them right up all 8 of my snakes always think there being fed when opening up there tubs why is that I keep them fed every Friday night they all eat
Chris Mcdonald I just read the body language and go from there. if you watch close I often use my off hand as a distraction if they seem to be giving me the eye.
Bruce Wayne depends on what it is het for. different prices for different genes. the double het in the video is $75. he is het for both SK axanthic and ghost.
Would it be a 66% visual het female that we should invest in 100% visual hets, 50%... I mean what is the percentage if it's not going to be an actual visual het female clown to invest in what is the best route
Ramon Quirarte sounds good. shipping is usually around $55 or so. price will be set when babies hatch, as market is so variable. just keep an eye here and our Facebook page!
Herpotologeydude S lol, maybe not stalk but definitely research. nothing worse than having a recessive project you put years in to find the hets aren't actually hets.
also as a side note, Watch our hobby help video. we also donate one snake every year to charity (last two were animal shelter, and a cancer fund). I have no idea where you would get the idea we are in it only for money. couldn't be further from the truth.
Can you please do a video that explains/shows all the different abbreviation? It would help newbies like me so much.
Brother, I've been in the industry a long time and like most of us I know how it all works. But I could never explain it like you did. I watch all your videos, and many videos from other videos...but, this one BY FAR the best video I've ever seen on the internet.

The end of that video was the cutest 60 seconds I’ve ever seen a breeder do on RUclips 🥺🥰
Matt, I'd love to hear you build off of this 5 snake example to year 2, when to outcross and how to plan out the project. Thanks for all you do!
That Axanthic male is absolutely gorgeous! Great video, too. I know a good bit about genetics, being a biologist, but I still love watching other people talk about their snakes and seeing the enjoyment and energy they get out of the animals.

You just named every persons first breeding set they should get! You explain things so so so well! I know where i want to start haha
Matt, want to personally thank you for posting these videos. Just a cool, easy to watch, personable insight. Awesome.
6:02 I can't help but laugh at how the snake suddenly starts to make a break for it out of nowhere XD

Thank you so much for this video!!!! I have watched so many videos and read so much info and you just made it so much easier to understand!!

Do y’all sell snakes online? The coloration of the one you pulled out at about 8:18 is what I’m looking for. It’s a ghost?
Jared Edney she is a ghost, and we do through our Facebook. But currently pretty much out
You have some cool videos can you do a step by step breeding video
hey is there any chance of you guys doing a video on carpet python breeding.about what you can mix, morphs, age and weights, cooling.things like that would be awsome!!!! keep up the good work always watch your vids!
Phil Russell it will be awhile. unfortunately our large female carpet passed away due to egg binding last year. we are raising up another female though.
Cool. Have a chart or board where you could write on to show? Very cool.
Awesome info!!!! Helped me a bunch!!!
Subbed! I love ball pythons and hope to become a breeder. They’re fkn awesome animals. And thanks for putting so much effort into your vids and sharing. Gonna binge watch some today lol.
Binge binge binge!! Then go ck out our patreon, www.patreon.com/olympusrepitles for more. Plus other cool stuff.
Can you do a video on possible het or 50% het ball pythons
Mostly I love snacks design on his body it's cool and amazing
Hi! This was a great video, very informative! Like you I absolutely love the Spider but I’ve heard the “wobble” could be quite detrimental to the snake. Strikes for food being off, accidentally biting themselves and turning themselves upside down. What are your thoughts? (I am very new to this hobby, extremely green ☺️) Thank you 🙏🏻
Really enjoying y'all's videos, good info.
Golem.jch thanks!
this is probably a long shot lol but I'm looking to start breeding my buddy is a great breeder and I speak with him but I'm thinking on trying to start with champagne. I love what champagne does do you think that is a good gene to start with?
Vincent Criblez sure!
I'm pretty sure the MJ line has proven incompatible with both VPI and SK. Don't forget the black axanthic (from VPI but not compatible) either! And red axanthic (even though its co-dom).

My normal ball python looks exactly like that. How would I tell the difference
Awesome videos! You do a wonderful job and your great at marketing yourself!!!! Ok thank you very much! Just wanted to double check see if anything was different. Keep up the awesome videos your personality is great, I really enjoy watching them! Have a great day!
Heather Maranto thanks a ton! I really appreciate it.
Lol
Marshal Platz lol, I would say pretty good
What do you do when you go on vacation and you have all these snakes to care for who gives them fresh water? If you're gone for a whole week?
One of the reasons I have a business partner
I think the example you give has some merit if you plan on holding back a bunch of females to breed to powerhouse males, but my favorite way is to get co-dom females that have genes I want to combine with the recessive, and then create comdom het recessives to breed back to daddy recessive. Then in 2 generations you can get something more interesting than what you started with. You also don't have to worry about people lying about hets that way because you know what you bred. You can even pick females with different codoms you want to combine together later down the road with your recessive.
edit: haha later in the video you talk about doing that but with codom het recessives. you are so on the ball in this video.
Can u do wats ur favor pied or how can u tell if the snake has the het pied markers on it
love the vid. this is exactly how I was thinking about getting into the clown Gene buying a visual male, but I'm going to breed it to females I already have to mix in pastel and butter genes
amanda Nappier sounds like a solid plan.
I'm about to buy my first ball python with this information I'm going to start with a female
Great info, thanks for sharing
I don't know if you you guys ever have made a video discussing the spider gene and the wobble that they have but you should If not 😊
Stephanie Burney we have discussed it some, it is one of our earlier videos about the spider gene.
That makes getting hets very difficult for someone who doesn't know any breeders! Do u use clown and pied markers to help? How can u know for sure if you don't know the breeder? What am I missing with axanthic? Why are just a few truly colorless??
Buy from a trusted breeder, at a show. Axanthic needs some genes to lighten the color
How come you never talk about Burmese pythons, reticulated pythons and others large snake
Have you considered chipping the snakes❓
I don't really see a reason too. If they ever escaped the house they would die. I also have the room sealed (door runners etc) so on the rare event we have an escape they don't go far.
is the rule of lines stay true for recessive only or all the lines like calico?
could you make a video on what ur method is to feed ball pythons who go " off feed " for awhile?
jake hagen we could probably try that
What are good pairings bananas? I have a male basic

I️ am wanting to breed my male cinnamon ball python he’s almost a year old and I’m looking for a adult female ghost het albino how do you determine the price on the babies?
Mostly just look at morphmarket, kingsnake, etc
So would buying a normal from a pet smart or petico is forbidden?? Need to so I can know what step to take on breeding.
Definitely not forbidden
Can there be a Clown Pied. I have been looking and not finding much information
Ted Salava there absolutely can! but double recessive takes some work and some luck. they are out there but expensive
im actually going to school for this field :) i absolutely love reptiles especially ball pythons
AerotheVampire that's awesome! are you studying herpetology, biology, or genetics?
herpetology first, call me an overachiever but im interested in learning as much about all three as i can ^^ Ive always loved reptiles i used to pick up the lizards and garden snakes out of our backyard when i was little. it freaked my mom out so much lol
Where to you recomend going to buy these 5 snakes you recomed?
tom ripberger anywhere! morph market, shows, me if I have em. any place
this is the project i' working on now i have a pastel mojave ax. het a mojave het ax.and a firefly double het clown trying to find two more females then a clown
thanks great tips
Trouser is a big dude!!
Hi do you need to wash your hands each time you handle a snack, so you get off the sent of the first one, sorry new to this dont own one just watch at mo
No, unless it is in quarantine
Nice video🤘🤘
I seen at reptile shows hets for $30-$45. What do you think about that
Bruce Wayne again, depends on what it is het for. double hets are worth more as well because it carries two genes, not one.
Thank you.
Can you do an update on the dwarf caiman?
Wyoming Reptiles I promise one is coming very soon. trying to get setup the way I want with lightning etc before doing a video, but we are working on it!!
Olympus Reptiles ok sweet! Can't wait!
Do you have a male and female dbl het true ghost pair for sale?
Quinton Mann not right now
where can I look at and purchase ur snakes for sale?
Brandon Theis hello, and thanks for your interest! we currently have nothing for sale, but have 15 hatchlings just waiting to get to size and a full incubator at the moment. we will post on Facebook when they are ready!
Olympus reptiles, I'll keep in touch your axanthics are stunning and want to add a female to my collection
I notice when you take your snakes out u just pick them right up all 8 of my snakes always think there being fed when opening up there tubs why is that I keep them fed every Friday night they all eat
It's like I have to wait a few minutes to pick them up if I just go right in there I probably will get bit and that's never fun
Chris Mcdonald I just read the body language and go from there. if you watch close I often use my off hand as a distraction if they seem to be giving me the eye.
How much would you sell a het
Bruce Wayne depends on what it is het for. different prices for different genes. the double het in the video is $75. he is het for both SK axanthic and ghost.
Would it be a 66% visual het female that we should invest in 100% visual hets, 50%... I mean what is the percentage if it's not going to be an actual visual het female clown to invest in what is the best route
100%. It is the only one that is definitely a het. If starting, and you buy a 50 or 66, raise it up, and it isn't a het wasted a lot of time
where do I go to buy
Mac C best place is to message us through Facebook! same name Olympus Reptiles
why don't you have and photos on your facebook
Mac C there should be tons. including a post of available down a few. newest pic was my caiman. here is a link facebook.com/olympusreptiles/
How the hell did i get here?
🤘🤘🤘
i want an albino
Ramon Quirarte I would love to sell you one when we hatch this year. all out of 2016 albinos.
+Olympus Reptiles that would be awesome please let me know price n shipping to Oregon thank you
Ramon Quirarte sounds good. shipping is usually around $55 or so. price will be set when babies hatch, as market is so variable. just keep an eye here and our Facebook page!
u have a sight i can check out also an email id like to chat abot dwarf caiman
Ray Barlow best way is through Facebook.
qualifications to be a reptile breeder be able to stalk someone to make sure there not a scam, makes sense tho lol
Herpotologeydude S lol, maybe not stalk but definitely research. nothing worse than having a recessive project you put years in to find the hets aren't actually hets.
And a axanthic
Are you still in the python business I can’t find you nowhere?
good video. very helpful but it seems you guys are just in it for the money....
Paulie Bukowski well that is really funny, as we have stated in several videos.....we have picketed exactly 0 dollars.
also as a side note, Watch our hobby help video. we also donate one snake every year to charity (last two were animal shelter, and a cancer fund). I have no idea where you would get the idea we are in it only for money. couldn't be further from the truth.
+Olympus Reptiles u have some baby's
Great info guys.
