I think of my forefathers who landed here, who traveled to the Orange Free State where the Dutch Reformed Church reigned supreme and were instrumental in introducing Catholicism to the Free state. They embraced the voyage from Ireland, crossed through harsh lands and fought their way to an area where Catholics were not welcome. They did it because they feared not, because God was with them. It is about duty, not safety. We have a duty as Catholic Brothers and Sisters to uphold.

There are so many different obstacles that I face as a single mom. Some days I want to give up. God give me strength. I’m struggling to make ends meet. Both of my sons are special needs and require much from me. I keep faith because I know that God will provide. So as I struggle to buy groceries for my children, and as I struggle to pay rent every month. I turn to you Lord Jesus help me. Amen 💕

You are heroic. One of my best friends was in a similar situation. After many years of difficulty, she has raised her children, and they are wonderful. All the love and effort she put into them has helped them overcome their challenges and become great men. I pray that one day you find yourself there and feel that all the struggles were worth it. But for now, I will pray for you daily that God sends you consolation and inspires good people to help you.

I can't disagree with this conversation, but I certainly feel uncomfortable with the strident silence about basic physical security. Catholic hierarchy of values put physical wellbeing among the most fundamental human rights. The US has a plague of random gun violence, job and home insecurity, and of course healthcare insecurity. What does, for example, Solicitudo Rei Socialis or other social encyclicals say about these? Focusing on verbal or moral insecurity without addressing catholic Social Doctrine seems to be a serious omission. What is the point of this conversation?
Consider that much of the perceived threat of "unsafe" speech, customs, laws, etc. results from an assumption of being the "oppressed" one under attack by an "oppressor". When that world view dominates a group, the cry for "safety" represents an attack on the validity of the source of the perceived "threat".

Safety regulations were written in blood, and they align with Catholic Social Teaching on the dignity of work, the rights of workers, and on prudence. I think of Pope Leo XIII's "Rerum Novarum."
Helping youth talk about their problems is not hurting them. It is giving them life skills to problem solve and not get stuck in the cycle of why: did my parents divorced, choice drugs, over me ,have me placed for adoption, etc. Brief therapy helps them understand iir t is not their fault If god is love then we need to assist these children in listening to these questions. Building self-confidence and problem solving skills. If your child needed a dentis, a parent would take them. Believe meas s a School Social Worker and Community Mental Health Worker we have many children and families in need. I hope my parents would use the system properly and then move on when the service is no longer needed. Youth need to be able to talk about their feelings, not ignore them. The honest truth is they are still hurting in this confusing world. Therapy can be an assist to personal growth for children and teens if used correctly. Thank you for your time. Short answer, no. It shifts the responsibility of safety from the individual to that of an amorphous beurocracy to only provide a false sense of security. Look up Mike Rowe's "Safety Third" series to understand how when that responsibility is shifted, it actually leads to more people getting hurt.
It's too bad that many of us old and especially young and going crazy. So much, even most of the cause is not even our own fault. It's how our parents or caretakers raised us and the environment we were in. Fact is, we can help ourselves as we 'grow up' if you are aware. And we can pass on good values to our young today
Yes, we have to be able to speak, and people get offended way too easily. There should be a mediator always in my opinion so that the people don’t get violent. But there are ways to talk, but we can’t do it without a mediator I don’t think because people are too volatile I don’t know
It all started in the late 1990’s with the dumb category of “Emotional Support Animals” for people too weak to handle flying, entering a public building or renting an apartment. It was seen as “compassionate.” Then other groups wanted to get on the ‘compassionate bandwagon’ (I don’t know why) and start offering all the dumb accommodations that, as you said, hasn’t seemed to improve society in any measurable way.

Safety culture: sometimes yes it's good. Sometimes not. Sometimes neutral. In a homeless shelter, for example, overemphasized responses where people are treated like criminals entering jail when they are trying to get back on their feet isn't mentally healthy for anyone. Or treating a homeless person like an abuse victim and that person will always be an abuse victim is also not helping the homeless person or the people who run the shelter. If it's CSS run shelter, I hope that people are listening to this podcast. 🙏
Safety culture is not about protecting those in need, but about turning normal people who don't need it into weaklings and cowards who don't want to move. Just like an overprotected child can become full of allergies and sicknesses, an overprotective society turns adults into worms.
Wonder how the idea of “safe space” could be addressed for “Admonish the sinner”. Admonish the sinner is ultimately taken as an offense and rational conversation is not attained. Rather the ‘horse in the chariot’ occurs and an unbridled emotional reaction is witnessed. How do we better portray ‘admonish’ as ‘earnestly advising or urging’ an individual to focus on the intended greater good? This is a common difficulty experienced when the sinner chooses the sin over even the existence of God. The sinner would rather deny God’s existence than give up their ‘summa bonum’.

I just heard a Catholic commentary from a person living in Minnesota, who is distressed about Bishop Barron's seemingly lackluster response to what the government is trying to impose which would be anti Christian. As a Bishop, should we expect more radicalism from Bishop Barron to protect and defend the Catholic Church? What has changed since 1974 when the Bishops were more outspoken?

Try a new prayer routine, such as praying with a friend, fasting, or writing in a prayer journal record. God wants you to recognize His blessing, especially your daily lessons, printing in color, and water bottles. Right?

Physical safety is the highest good for many women!!! While loving Jesus truly, madly, deeply, and perhaps being prepared to die as martyrs for Him, not one of us wants to suffer and die at the hands of a deranged man. Men have freedom to walk/ exercise alone; women are at risk - attacks are on the increase all over the world. In a domestic violence situation, women don't have the strength to protect themselves. Murders of women have reached a crisis point in Australia. It is said that good men only understand the risks to women when they become fathers of daughters. Sadly, men who are unhinged even harass women in our parishes. As for children, loving parents have always protected them. And loving parents know when to let go. I have learnt a lot about our faith from Bishop Barron but he really has a simplistic view about the reality of life for women
As a woman and a mother of daughters I can speak on this. Yes we need to protect our children but not cripple them with out hangups and fears. We need to be wise but allow them to grow and experience life. I’ve always told my daughters to not walk the streets at night alone. Always have a safety plan. That’s for us all living in this world today.
I don't know about the Catholic churches in your area but here where I live in Canada we are still not shaking hands when we give peace. So.... let's look in our own backyard first

I volunteer as a crisis counselor for members of the LGBTQ+ community. Many of the young people I support (answering questions, providing resources, encouraging them to speak what they're feeling with an adult who listens without judgement) face homelessness from or violence in their households. I can't remove these kids from the situations they're in, but I try to keep them alive and on this Earth where they can grow into resilient and caring adults. They're already living under risk, they don't need more.

He is not saying that at all- he's advocating for courage. Protecting yourself physically and emotionally is good, he admitted this, but he said it cannot be our highest goal or greatest good- we still have to be ready to deny ourselves and self sacrifice.

When the pandemic started, I told my Confessor that I was having difficulties with all the precautions because I had always (for many years) felt I was pretty much immune from any danger because of what Scripture said ‘you will walk thru burning and not be harmed… and so when I join all of them I somewhat felt I was not being true to what I believed.
I just think this morning that there are only 12 days left of rejection, including hurt feelings, loneliness, jealousy, guilt, shame, social anxiety, embarrassment, sadness, and anger, and then your Dad wins the game of the pandemic. This is one versus many. It emphasizes a symbolic reminder of Jesus' sacrifice, and a proclamation that Christ died for us is alive and is working in us, and your life will be softened because of the effect of the holy communion. Just copy this.
Who is saying “safety” is at the top? There are some assumptions being made here, IMO. Calling safety a supreme value, and at the top, is a deflection from the accuracy the scientific truth of our understanding of trauma and it’s damage. This sounds to me like “high brow” arguments of “stuff happens”. All pain is not created equal. All suffering is not created equal. I will not continue to listen to this disgraceful attempt to minimize the significance of becoming a trauma informed society. Nothing about “safe space”, etc, is related to whether or not people will take risks, “leave their harbor” to explore, etc. In the USA, it is no longer safe to send your children to school. It is an actual fact. Death by gun violence is a top cause of death. Bishop Barron’s childhood and youth experiences nor mine are the yardstick by which to measure the current world we inhabit.

If you are going to have a talk on safety, have someone there that studies and practices it for a living. Most people have no idea how safety culture works, why it works, the industry that does it best, and why. Safety is not a threat to individualism, religion, or morality. It is just a way to prevent accidents, mistakes, and failures. James Reason has written several books on the subject that are worth reading as well as the History of the FAA on the FAA website, as well as other books and articles on the subject. Commercial aviation is the industry that paved the way for safety science and likely has the lowest error rate of any known industry. The reason for that is a specific management structure that includes: 1. The FAA that removes hazards from the system and standardizes practice / training etc. 2. Multiple feedback loops that connect the front line to the FAA including reporting systems, accident & near miss investigation, putting potential rules out for comments etc. Many organizations lack #2 and have little or no reporting systems. As a result, people make rules without feedback and often make bad rules. Examples include Lyme Wars & the pandemic. Thus, safety science does not cause people to stay home and quiver. What it does is help people who choose to do a risky activity to not get hurt, killed, or cause harm to someone else. It causes people to get training they need, to obey the rules and spot dangers before the danger gets you. Those things are good for anyone. A surfer got killed by a tiger shark at that exact break while the kid was there. Fortunately, he was no where near there. So God sends messages & sometimes we get them & sometimes we don't. Religion can help us to not miss as many. Safety science can help anyone involved in a risky activity, including religion. For example, if religion had reporting systems then sexual abuse likely would have been caught much earlier. Also, Reason shows that spreading even one best practice can dramatically improve outcome although this usually happens from a bundle or a small number of best practices. At Fatima, the Catholic Church was asked to spread a small number of best practices (daily Rosary & First Saturday Devotion) to make up for the sins of the world as a means to prevent future world wars. The Doomsday Clock is now the closest setting to MN in history and the Church still refuses to lead these prayers even to prevent nuclear war. If the Church understood safety science and read Reason's books, it might realize that such a small intervention could very well have a dramatic effect. Thus, the fields of religion and safety are not in competition, but share insights that can help each other and both can help anyone navigate the hazards of life.
I think that you confuse physical safety with the cultural demand for 'safety,' which is very different. The first, what you describe, is a commonsense moral good that Bishop Barron says at the outset *is* a good. What many today demand is safety from all harm, including the harm of encountering an opinion differing from our own. The word 'harm' is a conjuring, a word intended to stop discussion, to end the freedom of speech and thus freedom of thought. It is normally used without evidence and thus is a tool, not a thought. This is not safety, this is fearful avoidance that only weakens us emotionally and limits us spiritually. The demand for 'safety' as discussed here ends risk, which ends progress, ends all forward movement, for there is no progress without risk. Bishop Barron has done amazing work in evangelization and taught million about deep spiritual truths. He has put himself in a direct position against popular Western culture and is calling for what is right and true. Also, the hierarchy of the Church is set in place by God Himself. So if you consider two competing goods like a worker's safety and a company's ability to make money, the safety of the work is obviously the higher good! But now, consider a second scenario where the two competing goods are emotional safety (wanting to be safe from hearing words that are hurtful), versus finding the truth. The truth is a higher good relative to emotional safety. A third scenario might be being a soldier or a firefighter, where the safety of the soldier or fire fighter is a competing good with winning the battle or saving others from the fire. The higher good may be to save others from the fire, so we jeopardize safety for heroism. It's just a more sophisticated way of conceiving of safety as opposed to a blanket mantra of safety first. Personally I feel that celebrating the mass weekly was higher good relative to not catching covid, so it was not just in my opinion for dioceses to block people from attending mass for months at a time.

They embraced the voyage from Ireland, crossed through harsh lands and fought their way to an area where Catholics were not welcome. They did it because they feared not, because God was with them. I can't disagree with this conversation, but I certainly feel uncomfortable with the strident silence about basic physical security. Catholic hierarchy of values put physical wellbeing among the most fundamental human rights. The US has a plague of random gun violence, job and home insecurity, and of course healthcare insecurity. What does, for example, Solicitudo Rei Socialis or other social encyclicals say about these? Focusing on verbal or moral insecurity without addressing catholic Social Doctrine seems to be a serious omission. What is the point of this conversation?
Consider that much of the perceived threat of "unsafe" speech, customs, laws, etc. results from an assumption of being the "oppressed" one under attack by an "oppressor". When that world view dominates a group, the cry for "safety" represents an attack on the validity of the source of the perceived "threat".

Helping youth talk about their problems is not hurting them. It is giving them life skills to problem solve and not get stuck in the cycle of why: did my parents divorced, choice drugs, over me ,have me placed for adoption, etc. Brief therapy helps them understand iir t is not their fault
If god is love then we need to assist these children in listening to these questions. Building self-confidence and problem solving skills. If your child needed a dentis, a parent would take them. Believe meas s a School Social Worker and Community Mental Health Worker we have many children and families in need. I hope my parents would use the system properly and then move on when the service is no longer needed. Youth need to be able to talk about their feelings, not ignore them. Short answer, no. It shifts the responsibility of safety from the individual to that of an amorphous beurocracy to only provide a false sense of security. Look up Mike Rowe's "Safety Third" series to understand how when that responsibility is shifted, it actually leads to more people getting hurt.
It's too bad that many of us old and especially young and going crazy. So much, even most of the cause is not even our own fault. It all started in the late 1990’s with the dumb category of “Emotional Support Animals” for people too weak to handle flying, entering a public building or renting an apartment. It was seen as “compassionate.” Then other groups wanted to get on the ‘compassionate bandwagon’ (I don’t know why) and start offering all the dumb accommodations that, as you said, hasn’t seemed to improve society in any measurable way.

Safety culture: sometimes yes it's good. Sometimes not. Sometimes neutral. In a homeless shelter, for example, overemphasized responses where people are treated like criminals entering jail when they are trying to get back on their feet isn't mentally healthy for anyone. Or treating a homeless person like an abuse victim and that person will always be an abuse victim is also not helping the homeless person or the people who run the shelter. If it's CSS run shelter, I hope that people are listening to this podcast. 🙏
Safety culture is not about protecting those in need, but about turning normal people who don't need it into weaklings and cowards who don't want to move. Just like an overprotected child can become full of allergies and sicknesses, an overprotective society turns adults into worms.
Wonder how the idea of “safe space” could be addressed for “Admonish the sinner”. Admonish the sinner is ultimately taken as an offense and rational conversation is not attained. Rather the ‘horse in the chariot’ occurs and an unbridled emotional reaction is witnessed. How do we better portray ‘admonish’ as ‘earnestly advising or urging’ an individual to focus on the intended greater good? This is a common difficulty experienced when the sinner chooses the sin over even the existence of God. The sinner would rather deny God’s existence than give up their ‘summa bonum’.

I just heard a Catholic commentary from a person living in Minnesota, who is distressed about Bishop Barron's seemingly lackluster response to what the government is trying to impose which would be anti Christian. As a Bishop, should we expect more radicalism from Bishop Barron to protect and defend the Catholic Church? What has changed since 1974 when the Bishops were more outspoken?

Physical safety is the highest good for many women!!! While loving Jesus truly, madly, deeply, and perhaps being prepared to die as martyrs for Him, not one of us wants to suffer and die at the hands of a deranged man. Men have freedom to walk/ exercise alone; women are at risk - attacks are on the increase all over the world. In a domestic violence situation, women don't have the strength to protect themselves. Murders of women have reached a crisis point in Australia. It is said that good men only understand the risks to women when they become fathers of daughters. Sadly, men who are unhinged even harass women in our parishes. As for children, loving parents have always protected them. And loving parents know when to let go. I have learnt a lot about our faith from Bishop Barron but he really has a simplistic view about the reality of life for women
As a woman and a mother of daughters I can speak on this. Yes we need to protect our children but not cripple them with out hangups and fears. We need to be wise but allow them to grow and experience life. I’ve always told my daughters to not walk the streets at night alone. Always have a safety plan. That’s for us all living in this world today.

This is an interesting discussion, but more theoretical than practical, in understanding many real life issues that families, individuals, & agencies face in the USA & certainly, some other nations. And that isn't just among "helicopter parents"!

I volunteer as a crisis counselor for members of the LGBTQ+ community. Many of the young people I support (answering questions, providing resources, encouraging them to speak what they're feeling with an adult who listens without judgement) face homelessness from or violence in their households. I can't remove these kids from the situations they're in, but I try to keep them alive and on this Earth where they can grow into resilient and caring adults. They're already living under risk, they don't need more.

He is not saying that at all- he's advocating for courage. Protecting yourself physically and emotionally is good, he admitted this, but he said it cannot be our highest goal or greatest good- we still have to be ready to deny ourselves and self sacrifice.

When the pandemic started, I told my Confessor that I was having difficulties with all the precautions because I had always (for many years) felt I was pretty much immune from any danger because of what Scripture said ‘you will walk thru burning and not be harmed… and so when I join all of them I somewhat felt I was not being true to what I believed.
I just think this morning that there are only 12 days left of rejection, including hurt feelings, loneliness, jealousy, guilt, shame, social anxiety, embarrassment, sadness, and anger, and then your Dad wins the game of the pandemic. This is one versus many. It emphasizes a symbolic reminder of Jesus' sacrifice, and a proclamation that Christ died for us is alive and is working in us, and your life will be softened because of the effect of the holy communion. Just copy this.

Who is saying “safety” is at the top? There are some assumptions being made here, IMO. Calling safety a supreme value, and at the top, is a deflection from the accuracy the scientific truth of our understanding of trauma and it’s damage. This sounds to me like “high brow” arguments of “stuff happens”. All pain is not created equal. All suffering is not created equal. I will not continue to listen to this disgraceful attempt to minimize the significance of becoming a trauma informed society. Nothing about “safe space”, etc, is related to whether or not people will take risks, “leave their harbor” to explore, etc. In the USA, it is no longer safe to send your children to school. It is an actual fact. Death by gun violence is a top cause of death. Bishop Barron’s childhood and youth experiences nor mine are the yardstick by which to measure the current world we inhabit.

Saint John Paul the second is one of Bishop Baron's heroes, and he has studied all of his writings deeply. He does not plan to contradict this statement. I believe he's looking at the larger culture. He is not advocating for unsafe working conditions.

If you are going to have a talk on safety, have someone there that studies and practices it for a living. Most people have no idea how safety culture works, why it works, the industry that does it best, and why. Safety is not a threat to individualism, religion, or morality. It is just a way to prevent accidents, mistakes, and failures. James Reason has written several books on the subject that are worth reading as well as the History of the FAA on the FAA website, as well as other books and articles on the subject.
Commercial aviation is the industry that paved the way for safety science and likely has the lowest error rate of any known industry. The reason for that is a specific management structure that includes: 1. The FAA that removes hazards from the system and standardizes practice / training etc. 2. Multiple feedback loops that connect the front line to the FAA including reporting systems, accident & near miss investigation, putting potential rules out for comments etc.
Many organizations lack #2 and have little or no reporting systems. As a result, people make rules without feedback and often make bad rules. Examples include Lyme Wars & the pandemic.
Thus, safety science does not cause people to stay home and quiver. What it does is help people who choose to do a risky activity to not get hurt, killed, or cause harm to someone else. It causes people to get training they need, to obey the rules and spot dangers before the danger gets you. Those things are good for anyone.
Religion can aid safety by connecting people to Divine guidance, so they don't miss the "still quiet voice" that sometimes we miss even when it shouts at us. I used to blow off a friend's concerns about sharks, until I got double bumped at 50 degrees (white shark). Fortunately, I paid attention after that when a neighbor's kid was going to West Maui & I was about to tell him about an easy break there. I felt the warning & kept my mouth shut. A surfer got killed by a tiger shark at that exact break while the kid was there. Fortunately, he was no where near there. So God sends messages & sometimes we get them & sometimes we don't. Religion can help us to not miss as many.
Safety science can help anyone involved in a risky activity, including religion. For example, if religion had reporting systems then sexual abuse likely would have been caught much earlier. Also, Reason shows that spreading even one best practice can dramatically improve outcome although this usually happens from a bundle or a small number of best practices. At Fatima, the Catholic Church was asked to spread a small number of best practices (daily Rosary & First Saturday Devotion) to make up for the sins of the world as a means to prevent future world wars. The Doomsday Clock is now the closest setting to MN in history and the Church still refuses to lead these prayers even to prevent nuclear war. If the Church understood safety science and read Reason's books, it might realize that such a small intervention could very well have a dramatic effect.
Thus, the fields of religion and safety are not in competition, but share insights that can help each other and both can help anyone navigate the hazards of life.

I think that you confuse physical safety with the cultural demand for 'safety,' which is very different. The first, what you describe, is a commonsense moral good that Bishop Barron says at the outset *is* a good. What many today demand is safety from all harm, including the harm of encountering an opinion differing from our own. The word 'harm' is a conjuring, a word intended to stop discussion, to end the freedom of speech and thus freedom of thought. It is normally used without evidence and thus is a tool, not a thought. This is not safety, this is fearful avoidance that only weakens us emotionally and limits us spiritually. The demand for 'safety' as discussed here ends risk, which ends progress, ends all forward movement, for there is no progress without risk. How did Theodore Roosevelt put it:
_It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat_
If all demanded 'Safety' we would have no martyrs, no heroes, only fears and hatreds of others who do not keep us 'safe.' 'Safety' is completely self-centered and manipulative, and therefore is one of the tools and results of hell on earth.

My impression is that pope Francis is trying to emulate Jesus ie. Jesus spent time mixing with sinners by loving them first. He didn't brow beat them with their sins. Bishop Barron has done amazing work in evangelization and taught million about deep spiritual truths. He has put himself in a direct position against popular Western culture and is calling for what is right and true. Also, the hierarchy of the Church is set in place by God Himself.
Bishop Barron reminds us that the greatest sin is that of pride.. be careful!

@jcbnyc2009 I did. I don't think the conversation was geared towards workplace safety but towards the modern civersatuin about "safe spaces" or "unsafe/dangerous speech." I don't think the implication at all was that we shouldn't have OSHA.

And there was nothing where someone couldn't turn around and use it against an OSHA. Against mandatory water breaks in South Florida or deep Texas. Same mentality that the good bishop didn't exactly make sure to not be the case..
@jcbnyc2009 I do see your point with the hard hat. But the Bishop is encouraging people to have safety properly ordered relative to other goods. So if you consider two competing goods like a worker's safety and a company's ability to make money, the safety of the work is obviously the higher good!
But now, consider a second scenario where the two competing goods are emotional safety (wanting to be safe from hearing words that are hurtful), versus finding the truth. The truth is a higher good relative to emotional safety.
A third scenario might be being a soldier or a firefighter, where the safety of the soldier or fire fighter is a competing good with winning the battle or saving others from the fire. The higher good may be to save others from the fire, so we jeopardize safety for heroism.
It's just a more sophisticated way of conceiving of safety as opposed to a blanket mantra of safety first. Personally I feel that celebrating the mass weekly was higher good relative to not catching covid, so it was not just in my opinion for dioceses to block people from attending mass for months at a time.
It's ironic to have a Catholic video about how anyone concerned about personal safety is somehow weak when, over the last thousand years, millions of people have suffered great despair because of the actions of the Catholic church.

Did you view the entire interview? Maybe re-view with more objectivity. They are talking fear, courage, a higher good, immediate emotional reaction vs ordered passions and reactions according to reason. It's good stuff and will help if heard properly, in my view. He never said safety concern is weak. I really am beginning to think no one listened to this. Catholics want to protect life and encourage enriching lives. He's talking about when safety culture swings too far, and we lose our ability to self sacrifice.
