5 years ago i watched you train Dwayne as I followed along with my GSD who is the same age as Dwayne. And I'm back after 5 years brushing up on all the things that need to be done as I'm getting another pup.
Wow. You just blew my mind with the teaching that short leash corrections make dogs see being close as a negative correction. I've been doing it wrong. And that explanation makes so much sense. I originally thought training on short leash was the way to go and then gradually graduate to a long leash.
My dog is no longer a puppy but this video is great for teaching him that all the good things happen by my side. He's a rescue so I missed out on working with him as a puppy. He's doing great using your techniques, Robert. Thank you.
.It's sooo hard to get people not to pull or yank the dogs, puppy or full grown. I have been guilty of it in the past. Great video as always. I have been training Dobermans and Rottwieilers since I was 16 yrs. old (I am almost 69 now) and I still learn little tricks watching your videos. BOB
Your videos have been super helpful! I leave tonight to pick up my new puppy, German/Euro Boxer. It’s critical to have good puppy training from day one.
I needed this. I was having some confusion with my new GSD mix. I haven't had a young puppy in a while and in hindsight it was irresponsible of me not to redo the research before bringing him home. My absolute worst habit is getting frustrated when we're walking and he stops to sniff something. I tend to pop the leash in my direction instead of persuading him to follow. Going to try my damndest to remember this wonderful advice. :)
How’d it work out? We are at 16 weeks GSD and I’m working on luring w food on walks instead of a conflict taking stuff out of his mouth he shouldn’t eat..I figure a trade was better than conflict..
Hi I really enjoy your videos. I especially like the fact that you provide a lot of narration. I am legally blind, with no vision in one eye and very little in the other. I plan to adopt a dog soon, this is not a guide dog, I am looking for a low drive companion dog because I am too old to tackle raising a puppy. I just listened to your lesson on the long line. I wonder how I can use one without tripping over the thing. I will adopt a dog from our local humane society, so I don’t yet know what training the dog will need. I have raised and trained some good pet dogs, but it has been many years ago. Thanks again
Hi Robert. We got a Cocker/Lab mix, she's 10 weeks old right now, and we started training her by watching your videos. In just two weeks she already comes, sits, walks on a long line and waits for us to put her food down. Of course she sometimes ignores commands, she pulls on the leash and tries to eat things off the ground, but we're working on that too. I have no idea if starting her training this young is ok, I wanted to ask you if it's too young or we should wait a few more weeks. Thank you so much for all these amazing videos!
You have amazing training techniques. In addition to training with a local obedience school and my daily training reinforcements, your methods have helped tremendously. I have a 6 month old male (intact) Cane Corso. He has been with me since 8 wks of age. He is eager to learn and I love that about him. I LOVE the long lead method. It allows him to roam and when I step on it, it gets his attention back on me. Please share what treat that you use. I use mozzarella cheese sticks at the moment. I have turkey links that I haven't introduced him to. Again, thank you for sharing your knowledge. It has helped a great deal!
Yes finally a method that makes since!! Something about this clicks and you’ve explained it so nicely thank you!! Based on the not correcting in close proximity, when or how would you begin leash training without negative association?
Your videos are very helpful with my new puppy. My question is about biting. When I try to train my 10 weeks old springer following this video of yours, she runs towards me, gets excited and starts jumping and biting my legs or whatever she can reach. The only way I know to stop this behavior is to make her sit and give reward every time she approaches me, or pick her up and take her to the pen or a crate. I hate to stop a training session because she is biting. I would greatly appreciate your advice on this issue! Thank you!
Thanks Robert, awesome explanation. What to do when my puppy (11 weeks) pulls at the end of the long line and shakes her head to get free? Don’t want her to get completely stressed about it further on.
Thank you for this video! I've read that it's beneficial to keep a puppy on a leash, attached to my waist, inside while I'm doing chores around the house. So to call "the umbilical cord" training. Do you support this and if yes what is the length of the leash should be used for this? For how long should I do this?
Another great video. I think I will start using this method. I am always looking for natural positive ways to teach dogs. How ever I think I will use a bit more vocal markers. I like talking a lot to any dog I teach. Studies have shown not only does is reduce the human stress level but it also has the same effect on the dog. More calmness you can bring into teaching the better. I am still working on the calm part with my Ruby. She is always wanting to be on the go and is soooooooo excitable. You can see her on my youtube channel.
I just found your video and really like all your videos and your training style. Do you have anything that breaks down from day one with the puppy or a complete guide? I am getting a new puppy and although this is far from being the first dog I have ever had and trained, I want to get into specific sports and activities with her later so I want a very strong base. If I was local to you I would seek your services. Anything like I asked or do you know someone good in south Florida or a way to find one locally to me that’s not just a click/only food trainer. I originally learned from a k9 mil/le trainer who was too completely in the opposite direction and your balanced approach I like much better.
Great video extremely informative. Thank you. Our 13 week old border collie we have only had him for 8 days and he sits does down waits coming in and out of door. He is doing great. My question is crate training. We use 2 min crate time outs where he is put in without emotion or talking 2 min later he is let out always by person putting him in. We then go on as if nothing has happened. How do you ensure the crate becomes a positive place? We crate at night no problems there. But would like him to see crate as good not punishment. Do you suggest lunch in crate or special treat? Thanks.
I recently started doing the time outs by bringing my 11 month old pup in for 2 minute time outs via the collar. I noticed that she started to immediately pickup on that as a negative, biting the door and closing and opening the door and barking a bit to get out at night. My advice would be to get a pen and use it instead of the crate. Try to use that a bit more while they are smaller. Keep the crate for over night. Just my 2 cents.
Robert Cabral No harness needed? We’ve had trouble trying to get our 10-week-old goldendoodle into his harness. We finally replaced it with another style of harness that was supposed to be “the best,” but he hates the new one too.
I find the issue with dogs "hating" harnesses is because they sit right under the armpits - which are quite sensitive. That could be why your goldendoodle is so upset with it
Hello Robert. I really appreciate all your help with the video training. Thank you. Question. My belgian malinoi i am having hard time training her beause she is sorrounded by our other puppies (beagles) do you suggest that I train my BM away from the beagles?
i ve heard a trainer say that he uses the long line on a puppy, inside the house too, in order to be in control. would you recommend that ? or what would be a good way to have the puppy be inside the house (besides crating, or course) ?
Thanks for this video, ive been given a small leash and its a nightmare as the puppy keeps grabbing the metal clip and im trying not to pull it as it could chip a tooth or upset her, i will get a 3Mt line.
We are going to get our first puppy in less than a week. This is the only training that you do with a puppy for how long, until he is how many weeks old? Thanks
Hey Robert! Great video! One question I'd like answered though. I have a german Shepherd border collie mix who is 10 months old and I can't find a treat that she likes and is able to eat quickly when training. Got any suggestions for treats?
Robert Cabral No not yet! I apologize she is actually 10 WEEKS so training is extremely important to us! I will try those two and report back. Thanks for the response!
Hey Robert! The cheese and bologna worked perfectly! Us and our pups like string cheese the best because they can get really prolonged treats to keep their focus better and longer! Thanks for the help man! Love your content
Great concept! Don’t pull the leash to have the dog come to you, rather let the leash correct the dog when he moves away from you so he knows to stay close to you. And what a Great view! That’s your house? Wow!
Great video thanks! I have a 13 week goldendoodle and when I attach the long line on him he just wraps up in it and tries to chew it. I tried the not making it fun tip, but he still wont stop. Do you have any tips?
Keep his attention on you and something fun. He gets treats for doing what you want. More focus experience will change that in time. Also, you can step on the long line to shorten it.

that part about yanking, especially the final section is so so spot on and very well explained. thank you.

Loving this puppy video series, Robert. Truly awesome work. ❤️
Learning something new in every video.
Great long line use. One very happy puppy :) Thanks Robert

there will be more coming... thanks for sharing the time with my channel

i love strong cheese and hot dogs... you can also see on my treat reviews some other products I like!
Thanks for the great video, we just got our little guy today. Wish us luck!
Yes finally a method that makes since!! Something about this clicks and you’ve explained it so nicely thank you!! Based on the not correcting in close proximity, when or how would you begin leash training without negative association?
within the first few months!
Robert Cabral Ok thank you!!
Robert Cabral So with leash training can you still correct near you? I don’t want the dog to think being near me in negative. Thanks!

Great video good old long line the right correction and timing definitely key.
Awesome content, so well taught 👍
Good timing. Here I was yanking my dog whenever he wasn’t on path. Thanks for the tip.
Thank you!
I just learned I was doing this wrong.
Your videos are awesome!😊
Good, clear instructions on how to use a leash.... I'll put these into practice., thank you

its called tethering the dog. usually used to teach the dog to remain close but can be a problem to build separation anxiety. I would use a crate.

Stop using it as punishment and instead as somewhere to chill out with a kong or other high value chew.
good advice Nick!
I literally just bought a 1.5m line as per the recommendation of the “pro” in the store, for my GSD puppy ...
Thank you so much your video truly help me big time with my pitbull.
What is the best age for a puppy to start training them?
Start teaching her her name now. Say name when she responds treat her. Rinse repeat. Dog should learn it’s name as soon as possible I think
Hi Robert thanks for this video it is helpful, can you tell me what length is that leash?
This was really good! What kind of collar do you recommend for a puppy? I have a 13 wk GSD
martingale
Robert Cabral

@@alcy0ne1 harnesses encourage pulling. If you don't have a car crate, they can be a good seatbelt attachment (assuming you have the padded type).
I find the issue with dogs "hating" harnesses is because they sit right under the armpits - which are quite sensitive. That could be why your goldendoodle is so upset with it

Can u use several kinds of treats training your puppy, as chicken jerky, hot dogs, cheese????
Hello Robert. I really appreciate all your help with the video training. Thank you.
Question. My belgian malinoi i am having hard time training her beause she is sorrounded by our other puppies (beagles) do you suggest that I train my BM away from the beagles?
i have a 5 month and i’ve never used a long line. and i was wondering why he always kept his distance when we were out and off leash. time to get one
what do you give him as reward? can you suggest me any specific food?
Perfect!!
i ve heard a trainer say that he uses the long line on a puppy, inside the house too, in order to be in control. would you recommend that ? or what would be a good way to have the puppy be inside the house (besides crating, or course) ?
Sergiu Salcău a long line in house (training) is a must in order to keep your pup monitored..
Thx.
Really appreciate everything you do for us idiots.
Do you have link's to items you recommend, such as collars, leashes and training tools?

Robert Cabral No not yet! I apologize she is actually 10 WEEKS so training is extremely important to us! I will try those two and report back. Thanks for the response!
Bologna sliced up is also good because it's soft and puppies can swallow it quickly. You can also use some of the puppy's kibble.
Robert Cabral Awesome! We will work on it! I'll check in soon!
Hey Robert! The cheese and bologna worked perfectly! Us and our pups like string cheese the best because they can get really prolonged treats to keep their focus better and longer! Thanks for the help man! Love your content
How old was Duane in this video? He is adorable 😊
Under 1 year
You trained him TOO well Robert!😂
What is a lower cost, but quality long line brand?
Puppy Dwayne is so cute oh my lord

Hello Robert. Is your treat cook or not?

@@RobertCabralDogs what do you mean Yes?
thank u,
my gsd is 14 weeks old when i left her alone at night she start dig up the plant & soil what can i do i just pushed her on that area
I watched this twice and I still missed how long the leash should be! Could you please just tell me?
9-12 feet is best
At what point do you stop continually treat?
how long the line should I buy for the puppy only 2 months to train she dont bite the line?
About 10 feet
Can you do this exercise with an older puppy who hasn’t done it before say 8months?
yes!
This puppy doesn't bark!!how ?
Thank you Robert for this awesome vid
Can you still apply this to a 12 month old dog?
I'd say yes. Depends on what you have done in training terms with the dog before, it will take a little more time.
How old is he in this video?
Great video, but change the music please lol
My puppy looks at me and barks when I do this. I have his attention but he’ll just keep barking. Why?
Good instruction but try that with my crazy cocker 😂
I am obsessed with dog training videos and I don’t even have a dog!🙄
Tina Mar thanks for the laugh....hilarious
Haha "hard to ignore me"
I made a mistake of using a short leash to train my puppy........
