George on the ball as always. He deserves far more traction here in the UK than he gets, shackled as he is of course by our useless mainstream media that serves the very doctrine he rightly despises. We do need systemic change, foremost to our political system. His articulate voice gives hope.
Hope comes with Action Paul, not so much articulate voices, which help a little, but of necessity must be underpinned by action. It's why people often don't act until the last minute, they're scared. Unfortunately the climate-environment crisis is well underway, and change must be now not the end of the decade when phase changes will likely have taken the ability to mitigate and adapt to a livable world out of our reach. Good wishes
Our system already manages neoliberalism through social democracy, which is the dominant political system in the Western world. Neoliberalism is not the dominant culture as claimed. The key is to maintain a balance between the prosperity and individual opportunity that capitalism provides, and ensuring protection of the environment and people who might be exploited, and the creation of public facilities. Monbiot is campaigning for systemic change to eliminate capitalism, which has historically led to a loss of prosperity and freedom. He calls for revolution to eliminate capitalism, which history has shown ends in misery.
As a disabled person struggling to make ends meet on a casual job while I have a crippling condition, I find Monbiot a breath of fresh air. Capitalism is utterly contemptible.
What a great interview. I am an avid Guardian reader (for the last 20+ years) and greatly admire George Monbiot. This interview was both terrifying and instructive. Can't recommend it enough!
That was a great message in a bottle. It's so awful that we are stuck with Labor, who know that we are in a climate crisis and an environmental crisis but are such neoliberal (& Washington) devotees, as well as being status quoticians, that they can't find it within in them to lead, and do what needs to be done, that will actually address the impending crisis'.
Brilliant discussion helmed by George Monbiot, who I had the privilege to meet, years ago, in my former disguise as a journalist in the U.K. R (Australia)
I've heard George speak many times over the last few years. Without doubt, one of his better interviews, thanks for keeping him in his zone of expertise 👍👍
Thatcher epitomised one of George's comments by declaring that there is no such thing as society. We have to act as competing (self-sufficient) individuals and consumers to make capitalism and neoliberalism work for the maximum extraction of profit - hence the small state. In reality, we are social animals and should work together.
People are so easily tricked into believing in the possibility of offsets. How many trees are planted versus the nearly half a million cut down every 30 minutes? Add to that that cutting down a tree is instant, growing another isn't.
Yes and it is very important, which kind of trees/plants are planted in a particular environment. It should be carefully planned to enable the fastest possible regeneration of biodiversity. The "foresting" made by most of the forest-management-companies creates highly artificial and "dead" pieces of forest, which are not at all interconnected with the other parts of the forest-microbiom. It is sad and infuriating, how willingly incompetent these companies are.
Democracy and freedom is important but the message of what is possible is important. Case in point, Brexit, a democratic vote but the promise was completely false.
Right on George, capitalism was abolished in the USSR but sadly caused collapse, if the entire population had dropped their vested interests and worked for the common good it could have worked.
Yes we are all neoliberals now... even the most pure of heart. They...we.. all have our futures embedded in the expansion and rises in the share market and on accumulating monetising assets.
Yes let's just hand the things we need for survival over to businesses and billionaires (where the belief is their greed is good. Not ours just theirs). What could go wrong?
Those who lived through communism know that the ideology of equitable conditions for all sounds perfect. Nobody can say otherwise. But in practice.....Human behaviour will take care to prove any equalitarian ideology wrong 😊😊
What happened to all the Post Growth Institute stuff from like 10 years ago? I thought the future was going to be non-profit. I thought it was going to be the transitional model we would actually see. It made sense at the time.
Can you edit out the long and boring introductions and just put together George's bits please? I want to share this but I almost bailed myself, and my tolerance is far higher than most.
Fixating on a particular fetish form of capitalism (the social system of wage-labour & capital) is not getting us anywhere. The underlying immutable dynamic of the social system of wage-labour & capital is the accumulation of capital. This necessarily causes governments to prioritise, protect and enhance capital accumulation over everything else. Even the USSR with it's state capitalism fetish form of wage-labour & capital was subject to the same dynamic and it is well documented the chronic industrial pollution of that era. The real culprit is the social system of wage-labour & capital. Production only exists for profit and nation states are just property stakeouts. Furthermore it is impossible to reform this social system to run counter to its own inbuilt dynamic. It has to go and be replaced by a democratic common ownership of the means of production and distribution where money, markets, exchange, employment, governments and states disappear forever and replaced by democratic administration, free access for all.
It's not presumed consent. There is the legal doctrine of the parent child relationship. States are parents to cities, and the federal govt is the parent of the state. A jurisdiction needs to declare sovereignty and remove the parent child Legal Doctorine. It goes back to property rights.
This is overly negative. Currently in Rome will give some thought to feedback in three months. Neoliberalism is a major, major problem but this is not the way to educate and then change people’s perceptions and views.
16:28 ~ boom bust quit is a peculiar feature of capitalism which distinguishes if from other forms of commerce, it starts with colonial appropriation and environmental destruction and it carries on that way constantly expanding its frontier whether it's a geographic frontier whether it's social frontier whether it's a financial frontier it's always finding new frontiers of exploitation exploiting them until collapse and then moving on.

Thanks George, Polly and Ebony. Shared to Ballina Greens and beyond.

Some great quotes 👌 intelligent, logical while understanding the climate economic emergency. Excellent

Great respect for George. A little bit of truth in a sea of lies!

Love George and his truth. The Invisible Doctrine book is brilliant. Thank you all for a super interview.

My Lord he speaks well doesn't he? Thank you so much this fascinating post.
George Monbiot 👍
We love George
Btw... what a great conversation.
excellent. Boom, Bust, Leave....sadly resonates with me
Carbon Offsets are a CON.
Capitalism, is an economic, environmental and social malignancy, literally.
Right on George, capitalism was abolished in the USSR but sadly caused collapse, if the entire population
had dropped their vested interests and worked for the common good it could have worked.
Love your work George. Marxists need to come together

🎯👏 Well said. It's insane 😱🙈🤯😳

Then the effing iPhone advert came up. 🙄
Stop eating animal products and take it from there.....
