- Hey guys! In this video we’re checking out the capital of Switzerland - Bern. We’ll check out the old town, see the clock tower, and Swiss parliament building. We may even see a bear (or two!). We’ll end the trip with birds-eye views of Bern from the Gurten Mountain! Don’t miss out.

Nice city! I recommend the rooftop of the Schweizerhof hotel for watching the sunset.
The bar on the rooftop of the Schweizerhof Hotel is indeed great for views. Its however extremely expensive, even for Swiss standards (I am swiss, and for me its way too expensive).
This seems to be a very charming city, I hope I can visit sometime in the future when all this is over. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much!
I so love the old city of Bern plus the aerial view from the Muenster Cathedral.

Stone Age and Roman settlements were found in and around Bern but when the current city was founded in 1191, the Duke of Zähringen said he would name the city after the first animal he hunted on the site (which then was all forrest). That animal was a bear, so he named the city Bern. We sometimes joke that it was good he didn't hunt down a snail even though that would have been more fitting as Berners are said to be rather slow people... 😄
I bet anyone is slower than luzerns... damn they are lighting fast!!!
These l seem like great attractions and things to do in Bern. I'd love to see that Einstein museum and the bear sanctuary looks pretty interesting. The bears look very well fed. Great overview of the attractions.

Too bad you were just a month too late for the toboggan run. That looks like a blast. Bern looks to be a city that you can really enjoy even with many things being closed, with all of its beautiful architecture and landscapes.

I would love to visit Einstein's apartment! That would definitely be something on my must visit list once the pandemic is over. My daughter would really enjoy seeing the bears. And the toboggan run looks super fun...I have to make sure we get there during the summer/fall months to be able to do that!
The Einstein house is not that impressive. There is an Einstein Museum i the same building as the historical museum.

I was thinking going to Bern but this definitely made me want to go!
I live near Berne and whilst its probably not one of the most exciting cities in the word, its so beautiful and the quality of living is really great. If you go there, here some reccommendations: The Rosengarten (near the Bear park) is a lovely garden with amazing views over the city (for me, better than from the Gurten). The restaurant there is good but not cheap. The Aare river is the "lifeline" of Berne. In sommer, swimming in the river is great, but only if you are a good swimmer, dont go alone, and if the current is not too strong (which it is this year). Walking along the river is also great. One of the most accessible places is at Dälhölzli, where there is also a very nice Zoo. If you are in Berne on a thursday or saturday, dont miss the fresh produce markets - the one in the old town is very scenic. If you like modern art, the Paul Klee museum is great.
City planners should take a look at Bern. Those archways, where pedestrians are sheltered from snow and rain were built 200 years ago ! At least!
Because of your video we got to go on the toboggan run in Bern so Thank you! We wouldn't have known about it otherwise. We went in October & the city was so beautiful with all the fall colors!

I discovered your channel while I'm visiting Geneva for work for a few weeks. I had a couple of days off the other day, so without any real plan at all, I took the train to Bern and just wandered around. I wish I had seen this video beforehand, because then I wouldn't have missed out on taking the funicular up the mountain. I hope to come back for a vacation in the future with my girlfriend, so we'll have to check it out next time.
Other than that, I went everywhere else you did and I really enjoyed Bern!

Learnt many new things about Switzerland in your video! So Bern is the capital!
No that is wrong, Bern is just the location of the federal government building, Bern was chosen to host some federal buildings back in 1848, because it was far away from the border and near to the french speaking part of Switzerland. Also because it was a quiet small town and due to the fact that the other cantons all could not settle on a city to host these buildings.

The reason why Switzerland became complicated is, after Napoleon lost a Waterloo, it was decided that Switzerland should be a demilitarized Zone, so that Europe would no longer be at a constant fight. -We all know what happened after... WW1 and WW2 and EU ;-(.

The Gurten Festival is indeed very cool. Here a video of concert by Patent Ochsner, a very popular local band (before COVID). The song as 20h50 is especially famous. Its about "our" airport (which is tiny and in the middle of fields). Bälpmoos, Bälpmoos...
Shame Einstein’s house was closed, that would’ve been awesome! I went to Freud’s house in London a few years back and it was fascinating🤯 that bear did look adorable, hopefully he has a nice big enclosure, we recently saw our first ever brown bear and he actually charged at me!😳😅(Kirsty) the picnic spot looked beautiful, thanks for climbing the tower and showing us the views!

Well, technically speaking Bern is the federal city and not the capital. Because when the Helvetic Confederation (aka Switzerland) was founded in 1815, it was important to diversify the political power all over the country, so it was decided not to write down a place as capital in the constitution. This technicality exists to this day. Even though Bern is the de facto capital
My great great grandfather immigrated to the US through Ellis Island from the state(correct me if I used the wrong term) of Bern. He was from La Chaux de Fonds and his ancestors(as of today June 28 2022) I've found as far back as 1532 were in Langnau, Bern for several generations. I have one "big thing" on my bucket list to do before I die to visit as many regions that my ancestors were from.
My great grandfather died in a logging accident soon after my nanna was conceived so she never got to know about where her father's Swiss side came from. I've made it my life goal to fill in the gaps since my paternal grandfather was adopted at a young age, nanna(paternal grandma) never knew her birth father, and my birth mom left my life(still alive but don't speak to her) when I was 5. Piecing together everything has helped me fill a hole I've had in me not knowing where I came from and everyone always being so hush hush about our family history. Thank you guys so much for showing the beautiful capital of my ancestor's homeland. Channels like yours help me to be able to dive deeper into knowing what their lives were like, even if it's just based on scenery and architecture. ❤️

Is the toboggan run for adults or kids? I’ve seen videos before and always wanted to do it, nice to hear that it’s not too expensive too and that you can bring a bike up the funicular to get another downhill experience in the off season. Love that you guys also do picnics in your day trips we love then too! I’ll also say that the free (cost: climb up stairs) 360 view looks very nice. Great video as always
Toboggan is for both adults and kids! We did one earlier this summer and it was honestly SO fun (even a bit scary!)

Things to do: Toboggans and Cows and lots about Einstein, but the wonderful main museum is only mentioned in passing -- and the Paul Klee Stiftung (museum)??? Not a mention at all. God.
Nice, but you forget Bern's national sport: _Arareschwum_ or _Arreböötle_ (swimming or rafting in the Aare river)!
Ah! We'll definitely have to come back - we were in Bern in the fall so was a bit too cold, but would love to visit again this summer! let me know if there is anything else we should check out!
@@TheTravelingSwiss Hm, _Marzili Bahn_ (DMB), a nice way to coming back from Marzili (expensive if you don't have the GA), the _Sod- und Stockbrunnen_ (if you are interested in water-related installations), outside Bern, the _Stundensteine_, which are stones placed along roads every one hour from the _Zytglogge_ (17-18th century), the _Steinbrüche_ in Ostermundingen (half of Bern is built with these stones), the _Stadtbach_ which is a real 10 km long river (you missed the artwork at the end), and many other. I discover all these places during the many lockdowns we had, so it may (or not) be of interest to you.
