Try To Fall Asleep is an indie horror game that has taken my Theorist brain by storm. Since playing it, I HAD to do a theory. The story revolves around our player character, a man tormented by hallucinations while awake AND asleep. We have to try to fall asleep for our own good, or so our Doctor says. I am going to piece together all of the puzzle pieces of our time awake and dreaming to figure out what is going on at the CENTER of this awesome horror game. Let's go!

I love the lore, but stick a horror game/movie in front of me, and I will run from it for my life, they give me nightmares, and yet, this, I can casually sit through and be like: Hmmm, yes, very interesting... I once tried to see how long I could go without sleep. When I started seeing Shadow People walk from my right to my left on a narrow staircase nearly causing me to slip and fall, I decided to go and sleep.
i used to get low amount of sleep during exam season (4-5 hours a day) and i had similar things. now im back to my normal sleep cycle but whenever i stay up even a bit late i get a lot of auditory hallucinations

I remember seeing my partner experince hallucinations from sleep deprivation, it was scary from my perspective so I can't imagine how horrifying it was for him. Its insane what our brains do to us.
Yeah it’s not fun. Very panic inducing and disorienting also usually the more stressed and sleep deprived you are the more sinister they get, just a rule of thumb

Funny story. When I was in the era between falling asleep and being awake, I saw a big, tough-looking man and he looked like he was going to beat the crap outta me. Because I knew I was dreaming, I was like "Come at me. I know you're not actually going to hurt me!" (in my dream). He punched me and I felt something hit me. I woke up. I have no medical problems.

see now im scared, because the way i get out of nightmares is dying in some way. if whatever is chasing me gets me, and i die, boom i wake up. its happened before where i just let myself die by letting whatevers chasing catch me to escape.
death while dreaming could be worse than death while awake maybe is more painfull becuse your not entirly subconcius and we dont even know if will you wake before dying (im talking about death WHILE SLEEP not death caused by nightmare when you are asleep)

This is my theory: Perhaps, Dr Norberg is taking advantage of John’s condition. He may be creating these sounds and visuals, but claiming it is just his condition. Dr Norberg is gas lighting him. Then he makes his condition worse and worse so he can force John to give him excessive amounts of money for real treatment. However, as the condition is rare, Norberg doesn’t know about John likely dying in sleep. With no way to fix his condition and Norberg making it worse, John has worse, even more deadly nightmares eventually killing him in one way or another.
But that’s just a theory... A Person Man theory!

Given the general setting of the game, it appears to have taken place many years before the present (Think the 80s with the decor and electronics around). While it is most likely true that our protagonist does indeed have some matter of brain trauma, there might be reason to suspect that what is going on is actually an experiment. In some ways, this could be an unethical case study being conducted by a corrupted, amoral company, or maybe even one backed by the Feds (Think MKULTRA). It seems likely that our 'good doctor' may be introducing hallucinogenic drugs and other things in order to worsen the sleep deprivation itself to study their effects or the effects of severe sleep deprivation.

It takes me so long to fall asleep at night, I'm so afraid that something is just watching me when I can't see them or someone is just in my room while my eyes are closed. I literally cover my eyes with my hair every night so whenever I get that feeling, I'll feel safe to open my eyes to check because it makes me think that if something does end up being in my room they might not see me open my eyes with my hair there. That last example of the "person who survived the sleep death" sounds like a textbook case of sleep paralysis. Its very common and can be terrifying, but its not fatal as far as I'm aware.
The word bangungut is actually tagalog, and its common here in the Philippines, which if the person cannot be able to awaken while having sleep paralysis, it can end up to death.
Battery Fluid same, I used to have really bad sleep paralysis about a 3 months ago. I’d have it almost every night for nearly a month. It would’ve been cool for him to talk about it.

@Battery Fluid yeah, when i was in college i used to have that almost every night, i was so afraid to fall asleep. Most espi that "thing" that crawls from your feet to your chest.
The story about the guy who survived the nightmare death thingy, had sleep paralysis. It matched all the symptoms. I personally don't think I have ever had it, but I may have as a child because of night terrors I had that mixed with reality (I still occasionally have them when I'm sick and it is terrifying the way it mixes with reality). To this day actually, I've accidentally mixed up my dreams I had as kid with reality and apparently a few months ago I got out of my loft bed while dreaming and walked into my mom's room complaining about how I didn't want to go to military camp or smth (I don't remember it and I still have no idea how I got out of my loft). Anyways, my mom had a version of sleep paralysis once (she was in a room identical to her's in real life and knew she was in bed but couldn't move. She ended up hitting her foot against her bed in her dream to wake herself up and actually went on the radio to talk about it), but she said that there was no dark figure.
Sounds like the most extreme version of sleep paralysis humanly or in-humanly possible and potentially having a heart attack only in the dream which causes the brain to shut down and have you die a long painful death

I'm a bit late but still have a little theory to add: What if the doctor is one of them who tried to kill him back then (or is related to them). Because of his memory loss he can't remember him and now the doctors tries to kill him that way by telling him he just has to sleep, hoping he dies because of his trauma.
This is a really stupid thing to watch when you're about to go to sleep.

To me, that second “nightmare deaths” story just sounds like an average case of sleep paralysis. First he wakes up, and his room is the same with a shadow in the corner. Then it starts to move, and press on his legs and chest causing him to not move or breath very well. Then it just disappears. This can be explained because 75% of your sleep is nREM ( non-rapid eye movement / where dreams do NOT occur ) and 25% REM ( rapid eye movement / where dreams occur ). While in REM sleep, your lungs and muscles start to stiffen. If you wake up during this, you still dream (causing hallucinations), but you can’t move or breathe very well for a few seconds up to a few minutes. This is called sleep paralysis. Then it just disappears. But that’s just a theory. A theory on a theory. Thanks for reading.

Yeah, this happened to me once. It was extremely terrifying and honestly happened after I fucked up my sleep schedule and stayed up too long, along with misplaced clothing and lighting conditions. I still remember the image I saw and it's scarier than any horror game.

At 5:40 when I heard the words "I couldn't move" I imidiatly thought "hmm, sounds like sleep paralysis"
I thought the exact same thing. My boyfriend has had the exact same scenario of mysterious shadow like figure approaching the bed, climbing onto him, and nearly suffocating him on multiple occasions. It hasn’t happened to him in a while, but he has trouble sleeping because of it.
Night terrors are also pretty similar but they don’t make you paralyzed. You feel like you’re awake because the dreams take place where you fell asleep. I experienced this when I was preschool age. According to my mother, she’s woken up to me screaming and trying to open the front door *in my sleep* .

I need to take pills everynight or else I don't feel sleepy at all. Even when I do take pills it doesn't work all the time and I'll be up all night until I get so tired and sleep through day.
