- Calling all current and future anesthesiology residents, make sure to bookmark/save this video so you can reference it when the time comes for YOU to start thinking about your oral boards [also known as the ABA APPLIED exam].
In this video, I go into detail about the structure of the exam, tips I've heard from examiners and test-takers as well as share how I'm trying to tackle this exam while working full-time as an anesthesiologist and intensivist.
This is a static look into my current study plan; I'll update any changes to my plan on the blog [I've already decided to add a new resource!].

Excellent video!
Will be taking my exam in a few months!
Thanks for the advice!
Thanks for the tips, Dr. Xi!! So glad I got to meet you today! :-D
This was so helpful! Thanks so much and good luck if you haven't taken it yet :)
Thank you! Luckily, I passed!
Hope your exam went well!
Thank you! Luckily I passed!
Hi Dr. Xi, thanks so much for making this video. I had some follow-up questions:
1) Assuming no COVID, when would an anesthesiologist who is doing fellowship take their Advanced and Applied exams, is it during the fellowship year? Do you generally have to take it within a certain time frame after graduating residency?
2) What happens if you fail either the Advanced or Applied during your fellowship year, would you face consequences from your program?
3) Also, to what do you attribute the relatively low pass rate for oral boards among residency-trained anesthesiologists?
4) When are you planning to do your CC exam?
Also, I thought it was interesting what you said about writing things down over and over to memorize them, I use that method too haha
Thanks for all your help in advance!
do you have any book recommendation for communication and professionalism for clinicians? thanks.
Oh that's a great question. I actually think any book on humanism related to medicine also helps with communication and professionalism - I felt like I was able to improve my own communication after reading Dr. Rana Awdish's book, "In Shock" [amzn.to/2UkIXz6] and I'm currently in the midst of reading Dr. Ronald Epstein's book, "Attending: Medicine, Mindfulness, and Humanity" [amzn.to/3ik79Jy]. I'll have to keep a lookout for specific ones on communication/professionalism for clinicians - it's a tough topic to cover though!
Thanks a lot for your videos, are you familiar at all with Anki?
Yes! But I’m terrible with staying up to date on it...
