I feel like Linux is still not exactly ready due to the numerous transition that we are having, we are transitioning from X11 to Wayland which is major, PulseAudio to PipeWire is pretty much complete, Gnome is transitioning to GTK-4, etc. But the foundational elements are in place, the major issue with Linux in the past was app distribution which is pretty much resolved thanks to Flatpaks.
This comes with ubuntu 20.04, which is already 2 years old (04/2020), if you get one I really hope you update it to 22.04 that comes out this month (04/2022). It's insanely better looking and with much better performance.
It's on the LTS track for stability / support most likely during it's development; it's an engineering laptop first after all. Performance on common/general applications and games doesn't correlate to same gains for machine learning application, you'd prioritize stability.
@@lafan023 understandable, but the 22.04 is also an LTS and will probably be ready to update to when he gets his, its just a much better looking gnome UI to show this channel casual users who probably never looked into linux before. I prefer him to show them a modern UI than a 2 years old ugly one
@@azenyr 20.04 is the latest from ubuntu.com/download/desktop. You can't expect a company to ship out an 22.04 OS that isn't officially available yet and untested on their hardware. This is an ML laptop, to care about a GUI that you can simply upgrade to is a moot point if your work is mostly spent in a code editor or terminal...
Linux is the only real OS where you can execute meaningful AI and ML applications. Even for development in general, it's the best (macOS is also really good and WSL makes Windows usable). For consumer use, Linux has come a long way and Desktop Environment like Gnome are really polished and well designed unlike Windows 11's inconsistent mess.
@@daveSoupy the thing is that I also don't really recommend Linux currently. That's because we are going to through some major transission like from X11 to Wayland, GTK3 to GT4, etc
Eh, MacOS is on par with WSL for me....it is workable and you can argue even more workable than WSL but not by much. It is the whole "death by a thousand paper cuts" thing, like not using GNU tools across the board. Jeeze, I want to throw my old MBP across the room just thinking about it. We are only allowed to use Ubuntu at my work but I am thankful we can at least use real Linux.
why is the battery so small? With a giant gpu and a high wattage cpu, Seems like all those kinds of laptops have 99 wh because that's the max allowable on a plane.
For the type of work, it's more of a portable workstation than a laptop. Devs will most likely leave it plugged in 24/7 connected to an external monitor, with battery life not really being a consideration
Al about is cool (not the price though) except that Nvidia and Linux are not, and that's Nvidias fault but this means that you could buy this machine and in some time it could be a headache to keep that GPU running smoothly with the updates, that could be very bad for a $3500 laptop
with steam and linux steam deck... there is finally a chance to get out of windows

Yh not really, since steam deck isn't that type of computer

why does it matter? It can always be upgraded for free

Did you buy a Tensor Book Laptop? How about a longterm review?
There's a new like animation
For the last month and a half yes.
i think it was dota2 and not league

But, 3080 Max Q, i thought a ML focussed laptop should atleast have Max P varient
What’s a meaningful application to you ?
I agree to a point but that Linus Tech Tips Linux series was very eye opening to the problems they still have to overcome

It was dota 2 not league of legends. And the ai destroyed the strongest team in the world. :D
yes open AI
Yea the moment I heard "tensor" I knew this was for machine learning lol
Im 3rd commenter :) =D
Linux!!! ....................finally :)
Why would I need a 165 Hz display for programming?

2hr battery life. Is what most gaming laptops do. From 4k 2060 to 4k 3090 max Q

I think it was on DOTA not league of legends where they implemented an AI
Woah so fast
bro couldn't they put on it Arch lol. Missed opportunity to call it bleeding edge.
😂 😂
"Non-windows" just to not say "linux" laptop...

Deepmind.. yeah Elon bought it . Old news
Deepmind is Google, openai is elon
I’ve heard this Go to Chess comparison, but never Chess to Go. Just sayin…
Gordon doesn't need to hear all this hes a highly tained professional.
Finally

Why would the updates have an effect on the whether the GPU is running smooth or not?
just use cloud for machine learning research
