True. Definitely an odd and questionable bit of dialogue in an otherwise great intro, but used as you say might flesh things out better; it would be reminiscent of the occasional snippets from Princess Irulan at the start of chapters in the book :-D Hell, the continuous breaks in the flow of the story it would create would even simulate the experience of reading the novel for the first time and having to flip to the glossary at the back every so often to understand the terms being used.
