I watched this yesterday and can’t stop thinking about something… I’m 52. I’ll be 53 in 3 weeks. And while there is some “reckoning” that has to be done as you cope with your aging face, honestly, IT’S NOT THAT BAD, Y’ALL. It’s definitely not “invasive procedure” bad. If I could give some very tiny advice to anyone considering dropping over $10k to alter your face: stop looking at people who earn a living on camera to be your role models. Look at your peers in real life, because real life faces age, and aging is ok. Take good care of yourself. Mind your weight fluctuations and sun exposure, stay hydrated, and invest in good medical care. Being healthy and happy is far more beautifying than chasing fantasy ideals under the knife. If you have dysmorphia, seek mental care before cosmetic changes. Getting older is ok, aging is ok, and neither of those will stop you from living your best life. Being in your 50’s is actually kind of awesome when you embrace it, because the iron grip of youthful beauty standards finally starts to let go a little bit, and a sense of confidence and ease in being who you are starts to come through. Sometimes I joke that I’m entering my “hag” era, and I can’t wait!
As far as managing your face in your 50’s goes, Trinny Woodall is kind of my favorite role model. She has all of the non-invasive tools, but any work that she has done isn’t interfering with her facial expression or the quality of her skin. She looks like she’s in her late 50’s, but she looks f*cking stunning and better than she did in her late 30’s. Not younger, not as young as, but better.

Thank you for the wonderful advice. As someone in my 30's, I've started to embrace "aging" because I feel wiser and more knowledgeable and mature with more life experience. It's definitely a valuable asset to have in life, and I've heard that the older you get, the less you care about what people think, and I find that liberating.

What bugs me the most is actually fitness influencers who will sell “booty busting” workouts and claim they got their body from diet and exercise, but then show obvious signs of plastic surgery like lipo scars and a butt that protrudes from the sides.

They don’t have to address it, but if they choose to address it they shouldn’t lie repeatedly and intensely. The media, and fans alike, are often unapologetic and relentless with making accusations, so I could understand the motivation to lie in response. The lies aren’t without consequence tho and contribute to unrealistic beauty standards. To date the Kardashian Jenners have been firm in denying they’ve had their bodies worked on, with the admittance of a nose job being as far as they’ve gone, and I can’t help but feel society would be better off if they just never said anything

      100%
im happy that we can have open and honest conversations about the topic but i still find it so limited ... im worried about what is starting to be perceived as a flaw.
Whenever the plastic surgery topic comes up I'm disappointed that the topic of superbugs and antibiotics never comes up considering that will be the leading killer by 2050.
This is a personal opinion of mine, but if we really wanna get deep into this, it would also be interesting to consider how many people are chronically ill in the world and 'another medical procedure' is such a horrible thing to even consider and go through and such a contrast from a lot of the plastic surgery being normalised nowadays including the facelift by 50... im personally hoping that by investing a lot of this money on my mental health i will avoid the need for this and support my body and health for when inevitable things hit.
Lastly, even though is great to have an open conversation about this topic I also find it sad when this topic comes up of how is talked about in such a blaze way... your body can't differentiate life-saving and other types of surgery...ITS A HUGE DEAL! you shouldn't just "get over the fear of surgery". it's 1000% comprehensible for many people to avoid invasive plastic surgery for so many reasons, its irresponsible to say "just get over your fear of plastic surgery and do it" in my personal view

I don’t think plastic surgery is as common in the everyday world as analyses like these make them seem. 1) Agreed. I was hoping this interview would at least touch on racism, ageism, misogyny, classism... etc. So, I'm a bit disappointed. (p.s. If you make a podcast, I will listen to it!)
      2) I'm torn about criticizing this interview because I can see so many people have found comfort and reassurance from this content. I think anything that helps shed light on unrealistic beauty standards is probably helpful. However, as a society, we're stuck in this hamster wheel of feeling inadequate and then seeking validation by either participating in that predatory system or pointing out all of the flaws in the system and criticizing those who conform. Without shifting paradigms, this cycle will continue. I really like The School of Life for this type of paradigm shift. Here's an example for those who are interested: ruclips.net/video/F7_kJijFhyE/видео.html
      3) Speaking from my own experience, when I've felt badly about some aspect of my appearance, focusing on what others are or are not doing to their bodies has not provided a sustained sense of relief from that pain. Nor has it resulted in addressing the underlying issue(s) that contributed to those negative feelings. There is room for both debunking "beauty" myths and addressing root causes, but the current ratio is like 99:1 where I think it should be closer to 1:99.

I don't like the way Lory kept saying "you need to..." about different procedures, and the general way she (and Chelsea) talked about aging, as though it was a terrible thing that you have to prevent via procedures or you'll look sloppy. As though getting work done is a given, and as though 30k for a procedure to change how you look or look younger is something that should be budgeted for the same way having your kitchen redone should be budgeted for. These are not necessities. Everyone can do whatever they want, and of course being transparent is great, but the entire tone of this interview just left me feeling really yucky. I am not against plastic surgery or botox or whatever at all, but it isn't normal or common, except for maybe people in the 1% or people who want to be perceived as such or people spending truly obscene amounts of money on something they feel like they have to do to be seen as beautiful and young by society. Also, I know that sometimes this channel can be out of touch regarding different spending brackets, but getting elective procedures costing tens of thousands of dollars and portraying it as something that "needs" to happen is so tone deaf.

Agreed. I hardly know anyone in my daily life who has these kind of procedures, so I never even thought about it. Then hearing conversations like this make me feel like it’s a necessity when I’d never given it much thought before.

They look great, they're just not 25 anymore, and that's ok! When Lorry said "I felt I did need the cutting type of face lift", at 42, I'm here at 44 like... :/ I never want a face lift, and don't want to ever feel like I'm supposed to get one. this! no shade to lorry (or TFD for hosting), but I hate the phrase "you need" in regards to plastic surgery. I've considered a few non-invasive procedures so I'm not anti-surgery -- but I don't *need* them. they would be total luxuries. I'm also on camera every day for my job, so I think it's a little different. none of the women in my personal life have even gotten botox, and so many of them look objectively good and "youthful"... surgery is not the only way, nor is looking youthful the most important thing.

Honestly it was a creepy episode of two women talking about all the cosmetic surgery they want to have in the future - which is fine, spend whatever you want on things that are not harming others, but I got a lot more “plastic surgery wish list and thinly veiled snark on celebrities” than insight into the pressure people are under to look youthful well beyond their youth.

If I had to guess, when she emphasizes "the need to do xyz", it's more a way of justifying or rationalizing for her own benefit why she does / did it. We all do that kind of mental game when we want to make sense of our decisions and how we see the world and ourselves. The only issue is that she's trying to make it a logical straightforward if not self evident thing when it's not. You'll never not age and your body keeps the score, especially when it comes to invasive and traumatic interventions.
I don't dislike her videos, they're pretty enlightening and entertaining to demystify Hollywood basically. however her videos about her own surgeries are frankly scary (especially her vlog post face lift surgery) and made me think long and hard about how out of touch this whole normalization of "cosmetic procedures" are. On top of being expensive, they are actually serious physical *surgeries* altering your body (not just your appearance) with all the potential things that could go wrong (cutting nerves and tissues and muscles is not "normal", anesthesia and meds and recovery after that are also something your body could do without in general). I don't really understand how the physical trauma of what you're putting your body through for the sake of chasing the illusion that you'll turn back time can simply be ignored or brushed over.

I don’t think likening surgical procedures to make up is a fair comparison. The consequences (physical, financial or otherwise) are on completely different scales. Of course someone can be « addicted » to make up and that can feed into body dysmorphia but imo it’s dangerous to say surgical procedures are just another « beautifying » tool women can add to their arsenal. I echo the sentiment I’ve seen in other comments, I wish this episode had gotten more into the pressure women are under to conform and look « good »

100%! So little is considered even in the open and honest conversations about plastic surgery!

I watch both of your channels from time to time. But this conversation was difficult to listen to and I honestly did not finish watching. Orthodontics have a lot of medical benefits. Misaligned teeth and jaws can lead to facial pain, tooth breakage, and difficulty keeping teeth and gums clean and healthy long-term. I was a bit surprised Lorry did not counter that statement that was made about orthodontics because I believe I have heard she has a dental background. I have also known two different people that had what amounted to an eye lift but it was medically indicated and covered by insurance to alleviate a tear duct issue. It was recommended by their eye doctors, not a plastic surgeon. Both people that had it done are people that would not go under a knife unless it was medically necessary. Plastic surgery just isn't of any interest to them.
In general, I think this conversation really reinforced a lot of societal pressures. I am a solidly middle-class person. I am neither rich nor poor. I cannot even imagine having the time or money to afford much of what was being discussed as minimal and common like lasers, peels, etc. I especially cannot imagine being able to take the time for myself it requires to recover after a more invasive cosmetic procedure. When I think about aging, I think more about really taking care of my overall health. It is okay to look my age. I had a friend in high school with the same birthday. He died in a car accident soon after graduation. We lived in the same area and graduated from the same school. But I have gotten to do so many things he never had a chance to do. Since then I have unfortunately known of a few others from my childhood and teen years that have already passed away. The older I get, the more I think about how many people I have literally outlived through no fault of their own and through no special action of my own. It just happened. And I am not even considered "old." I am in my 30s! Getting older is a privilege. I am getting fine lines and some loss of fullness in my face because I have had enough days on this Earth to have all sorts of emotions and expressions. I have been fortunate to use my face long enough to wear it out a little bit. Sadly, not everyone gets to achieve that.

Hello, I’m a clinical pharmacist who helps physicians manage GLP1s like Ozempic for weight loss and diabetes. There are a few key points that were left out of this video that are worth expanding on.
    1. Medications like Ozempic, Trulicity, and Mounjaro are only FDA-labeled for Type 2 diabetes with uncontrolled blood sugar (not weight loss, prediabetes or diet-controlled diabetes). This means that if a clinician prescribes them “off-label” and their patient has a side effect (some, like pancreatitis, can be quite serious) they are more at fault. I am very up front with my patients and will only prescribe GLP1s labeled for weight loss (Wegovy or Saxenda) if weight-loss is the goal.
    2. Physicians are not used to prescribing these medications. I often see providers prescribe the lowest dose of these products and never increase it. Not only are patients/insurances paying $700-1,000/month for these medications, but they likely aren’t seeing the weight-loss they were promised.
    3. The weight loss seen in practice is much lower than what was seen in clinical trials. People should keep in mind that trials for medications like Wegovy enrolled participants who were so motivated to lose weight that they were willing to use an experimental weight-loss medication. It’s helpful to compare Wegovy’s STEP-4 trial for weight loss to Ozempic’s trials for diabetes; both have the same active ingredient (semeglutide). After 40-weeks, participants on Wegovy 2.4mg/week lost 36 lbs where participants on Ozempic 2mg/week only lost 14 lbs. My interpretation is that GLP1 medications are not very effective for passive weight loss.
    4. Should insurance cover these medications? It’s a nuanced conversation and I certainly have my hot takes, but keep in mind that private insurance is still a miniaturized form of socialized medicine. Members pay premiums to cover for the care of those that need it. Should insurers cover a very expensive medication when it’s used off-label and often at doses that are too low to be effective? I would argue no.
    5. The hype and demand for these medications have made them nearly impossible to find. There are currently shortages of Trulicity, Ozempic and Mounjaro. I have many patients who worked hard to control their blood sugars and decrease their risk of heart/eye/kidney damage by using these medications. It’s disheartening to see their blood sugars back-slide during this time.
There’s certainly a lot more to talk about and I would be happy to discuss this topic further if you want to reach out.

In my opinion, women who are so consumed by the comparison with Hollywood stars are better off working on their mental health and life purpose than spending their energy researching "improvements" others made to their body as to maybe get ideas of what they could do themselves. I do agree it’s best to assume any famous person has gotten something done, however big or small. Plastic surgery isn’t going anywhere, and so it should be ok to be transparent but I often think we gloss over not knowing the long term effect of certain “tweakments”. Even I looked into skin tightening only to discover that it could make certain things worse (melting the fat in your face), and with filler we’re seeing people now who’ve been doing it for years and the effect it’s had on the health of their facial tissue which makes something that should have been more straightforward (like a facelift) very challenging/complicated later on. It’s never ending. The beauty industry is a huge moneymaker and likely will continue to be.
I have a personal grievance/vendetta against how common nose jobs are because more often than not it’s used to erase “ethnic” features (rather than fix a functional deformity or an “extreme” variation).

Late to this convo but enjoyed the vid regardless. I do wish it was discussed how problematic normalizing these procedures are though. Although transparency is important to help people see they're not looking at something realistic, I fear it makes more people, specifically women, believe this is normal/okay. Along with the risk involved, the cost is VERY prohibitive. I wonder how many women are in debt or facing financial hardship for these procedures. What I have found that many don't want to be e open about are the insecurities that are beneath many getting these things done, and they go beyond what we see in social media and TV. Those things just validate our fears but I think our peers have more influence. When we speak about celebs for better or worse or complain about our appearance we send a message to others that there is a "right" way to be. Even in this vid, Lorry mentioned "good genes" and a "good nose." Honestly, that's all relative and social conditioning. Although I think celebs like the Kardashians should be more honest, I do think this whole "if it makes me happy/self care" lingo we use to speak of this stuff is bull and toxic.

I feel like there are a few seemingly conflicting thoughts around this discussion: 1) normalizing cosmetic procedures = feeding capitalist exploitation of insecurities; and 2) normalizing cosmetic procedures = promoting transparency, removing shame/stigma around vanity, and having realistic expectations of aging. It's likely both are true. But I think Chelsea has previously said she doesn't want to judge anyone for how they cope/conduct themselves in a patriarchal, capitalist society and on that, I agree and believe that's the scope/intention of this video.
But more broadly, I have to acknowledge it's hard to reconcile accepting yourself (not necessarily loving yourself, but making peace with your appearance) while an increasing number of people around you spend thousands of dollars to change themselves (because it's not just celebrities on camera now, it's anyone who is regularly photographed/recorded; and how many children nowadays say their career goal is RUclipsr?). It ends up being a hint that you're out of step if you want to keep up. Also, the people with means are able to be/stay pretty and the rest are stuck with their genes. In the end, for me at least, the question is: if it's normal it's probably not wrong, so if it's not wrong, is there any reason to discourage it? My gut says yes, but I don't actually know why that'smy answer. (Another metric: if it's not hurting anyone, why should we care? No it's not strictly hurting anyone, but does that mean it's not contributing to something harmful?) Before cosmetic procedures, at least it was just you were born pretty or not. But now, if you could make yourself prettier, why wouldn't you?

I have a hard time with someone who can't come out and say a nose job for a 14 year old is most likely an exploitation...or come out and call vain people vain. Or a vain society vain. Other cultures honor their elders; we are disgusted by the signs of age and do anything to get rid of them. Famous people don't age anymore; they stay frozen at some zombified late-30s stage, if not younger, which costs them tremendous time, effort and treasure to maintain, none of which they admit. For people who make their living in the public eye it's a matter of investment. Girls in particular are so pressured to conform to very unrealistic appearance standards; and the fact is, society will accept them better, you will be more successful, if you do. It's understandable that there's a reaction in the other way...I think strict extreme standards that expect people to be underweight leads to *both* anorexia and obesity problems.
I also disagree that minor modification = major, that is there's no difference. There is very much a difference between wearing some makeup and doing facial modification! Expense, time investment, and risk to your health, for starters!
That's another issue that is totally lost in all this - the health risks to having surgery of any kind. No surgery is without risk, and cosmetic procedures have resulted in death and permanent injury for lots of people, but that gets swept under the rug. *No* surgery should be undertaken casually.
Plus the serious likelihood that you will not like the results of the surgery; it may not go well, there may be complications, the skill of the practitioner may not be what you thought...

"No surgery is without risk" Absolutely. I don't think the risk has sunk in for Lorry. I watched one of her videos and she was surprised to experience a negative outcome (necrosis of the nose) of one of her surgeries and made it sound like her doctor did not inform her of the risk beforehand. I wasn't in the room with them but telling people that you can fucking die in surgery is standard practice for doctors.

Thabk you SO much for saying exactly what was on my mind. The RISKS and COST of make up vs PS is VAST. And it is ridiculous to compare them.
And 100% if you GIVE INTO that societal pressure, you are contributing to the social stigma against natural faces and advocating that PS faces are better and more valuable and contributing to that societal beauty shift. I'm liberal asf, but I simply dont care how "unfeminist" i sound when I say I don't agree with "if u wanna do it for yourself thats fine" bc few choices in life are ever only going to affect you in this life. To participate in PS, you are creating a shift in what beauty is and what is acceptable for a person to have on their face. You are contibuting to other ppl hating their own faces. You are contibuting to a culture where wearing your own natural face is shameful and undesirable. I don't love my profile and u know what? I could have a smaller nose. But quite frankly, I don't really notice that bc I am well loved by the ppl in my life despite that, and while PS can give me MORE romantic attention, I'm okay with the amount I already recieve, I don't need to be for everyone, and honestly, I value the ppl around me for more than just their looks and surround myself with others who also love my soul more than my skin. If you are constantly thinking about appearance, ask yourself why u do that and who you are surrounding yourself with that value appearance and whether they are a source of insecurity for you and whather that is the behavior, ideals, and values you actually want to emulate. If you do, at least you are now self aware of how much you value and prize vanity over other human characteristics. Nothing inherently wrong with that, but you can't be mad when you are judged based on the values you clearly hold.

"I have a hard time with someone who can't come out and say a nose job for a 14 year old is most likely an exploitation." For real. 14yos are little kids. Omg, don't tell a 14yo that's she's right to hate her perfectly good nose and that she ought to get it "fixed". That's anti-woman, anti-girl, and I hate it.
I also agree that there's a difference between wearing makeup and getting unnecessary surgery. I think they were being dishonest when they implied that it's impossible to rank those things and say one is worse than the other. No woman has ever died from putting on a little mascara. Can we say the same thing about women submitting to unnecessary surgery???
And then they start justifying cosmetic procedures because it gives you a high. LIke when Lorry was talking about recovering from her face lift. So... getting your face sliced up is physically harmful and agonizing, immediately afterword you regret it, during the long recovery you still kinda regret it, after it's finally healed you get a temporary "high". And then after a little while they want to get another procedure done so that they can feel that "high" again. For what? Don't they see how dangerous that is? Are they really that lacking in self-awareness? They're just addicted to the high of self-harm. And they freely admit it as if that isn't deranged and sad.

Anyone else feel like there was double thinking happening in this episode? In the same breath they were criticizing celebrities for never talking about the work they've had done, but then they bleep out the name of a male celebrity who's obviously had it?
And it seemed totally arbitrary whether they talked about plastic surgery as being excessive or being a totally normal thing.

36:25 Actually it is not a really new trend, the bodybuilding community is doing it. Men are taking it because allegedly it helps you stay young. I take metformin too and it is for Insuline resistance, and I can confirm that the results in terms of weight loss are great but VERY slow if your body needs it (it is not about digesting slower as said, but the blood sugar levels stay stable and you are not immediately hungry after eating like diabetes type 2 patients are). The good thing is that you are not always tired and hangry. It is also hard to appreciate food if you have a metallic taste on your mouth all the time, and tend to get spicy food, just to taste something. Horrible side effects like diarrhea, stomach cramps and feeling nauseous hours after eating. Taking Metformin on an empty stomach is also a disgrace.

My mom identifies as a tomboy; she has short hair, never wears dresses or makeup. Because of this I grew up not doing makeup because my she never showed me how or pressured me to (& we couldn't afford it). So I feel very comfortable not wearing any makeup or even sometime having a Pimple patches on my face. I now have adult acne and see a dermatologist. But I still rarely wear makeup aside from eyeliner & mascara unless it's a special occasion
