Unless you just have an infinite budget and want to buy these for fun I would highly suggest not buying more hardware to fix something that is a software problem. You already have unnecessary redundant devices on your setup as it is if you are using a shield and a Apple TV and a.....fire stick. the truth is the cheap fire stick would handle these files better if you used a Nova Video Player app on the fire stick because it's an Android app that is available in the app store for free the same as the Nvidia shield. Those players are popular lately but you can get smooth playback using something like Nova Video Player instead of Emby. The problem is due to the limitations of what Emby can and cannot handle. Nova video player Handel's both Dolby vision and hdr10 files smooth as can be and I regularly play both types of content with it without any issue at all on my Nvidia shield 2017.
I recommend you get an Zidoo Z2000 Pro if you have ripped UHD Bluerays and Bluerays. Its workes very well. I believe your equipment has to support Atmos. I have the Nakamichi shockwafe SSE Earc 9.2.4 1300 watts in my bedroom with Zidoo Z2000 pro atmos sound incredible. I have the Nakamichi Dragon sound system in my basement 11.4.6. Then Zidoo plays lossless Atmos sound. It also plays DTS X sound also
Why would you recommend this product to him if he's clearly watching content from Netflix also? Those devices do not stream apps like Netflix. They strictly play files on hard drives within your network. They don't do streaming apps and he clearly is using streaming apps. A better solution would be Nvidia shield and a better media player such as Nova Video Player which also allows flexibility to use apps like Netflix as well.

But what Shield app will PLAY movies in Dolby (please don't say "Plex" because I tried and it's too much Hell for me to handle)?
