Absolutely by far the most intelligent ammo guy on the tube. Ahead of his time, I have watched many many folks try to replicate this guys standard. All fall short. I’d love a comeback too
This is time consuming when trying to produce quality, consistent content. I was able to keep it going for seven years, albeit only part time since 2014. It was just a matter of time before it had an end date. Thanks
tnoutdoors9 have you thought about Patreon? With your quality and subscribers you could make a real living doing this for a living aka a full time job. We would all benefit from this. You and us.
This load seems to be a solid reduced recoil load more than anything. Most of us don't need that, but there are some who could use it, and a well performing reduced recoil 9mm is hard to find.
Brother, I trust my family's and my life with your professional testing. The standard pressure 147 grain HST is what I have been carrying for about the last 8 years now based on your reviews. There is really no reason to reinvent the wheel. This round preforms well and is very consistent. Thank you for all that you do!
Tnoutdoors9....i am sorry to hear about your hospital stay...i am disabled....and have been in and out of the hospital 4 times in 4 months...so i can relate to have health problems....i know how unforssen illness can change our everyday lives...what i am trying to say is this....you must have enjoyed making these videos at some point......you do it so much better than any other ammo reviewer out there....so i. JANUARY 2, 2019: Roy, thank you for the comment. Following the "sentinel event", my health returned in mid-2014 and I've been good since. Hate to hear about your issues and hope that your health improves and holds firm. There are current factors preventing a return to video production. Those elements are finances, products, and time. Ammo tests are expensive and time consuming to produce. I disposed of my clear blocks in mid-2018, which by that point were nearly 4 years old. They had dry-rotted to some extent and would not calibrate. The stainless steel molds were donated to local metal recycling. It would require a minimum of $500 to buy new blocks and molds. 20 rd boxes of ammo are approximately $30. My primary camera is still solid but I could use a backup. The software editor works but needs an update. Looking at $3000 or so just to have the necessary components in place to begin thinking about returning, and that doesn't account for what happens after getting out of the gate. There was a time when Adsense covered all channel expenses.....ammo, camera equipment, lights, software, targets, paint, blocks, denim, and even a firearm every so often. Monthly payouts continue but after withholding taxes I can buy a few boxes of ammo for the range and EDC. The final three years I was active (2014-2016), I lost money on this. Patreon, IMO, is a last-gasp option if a channel is not corporate sponsored and therefore not a long-term viable solution. I'm never going to have corporate industry support, although there had been some nice offers......but for product only. That helps but there has to be revenue. While there are a few new handgun products worthy of testing (because Federal, Hornady, etc. show no interest in producing a detailed review), a return focus would have included more shotgun and rifle tests, and range reports. Good rifle tests are at moderate distances, such as 200 yds. I have access to property for that, but it's a Saturday or weekend trip. I travel on business almost weekly and the last thing I want to do on the weekend is focus on video production. Shooting sessions, yes, but without the cameras. Granted, I acknowledge that I have some assets for channel promotion that others do not, but the aforementioned F P and T factors persist. Even if these factors were all positive, I still don't have the time, plus due to censorship the RUclips content creator experience has bottomed-out. New content would not be monetized, and RUclips demonetizes my older content on a weekly basis. Videos that are 3 to 10 years old do not adhere to RUclips's current Terms of Service, which is bullcrap. At this pace, there won't be any Adsense remaining on my channel by mid-2020. Alternative platforms have not yet reached the status where they draw the volume of users and provide creator revenue. I'm 99.9% done with online video production.
I understand ...just know we miss your content...if i could do anything to change all the things that seems set to discourage further content from you....i would...just know we miss you...and pray that another door opens for you ...GOD bless you
@@tnoutdoors9 I have also really enjoyed watching your past videos,as others have stated very detailed and informative. I also understand the time/cost effect. Thank you for the past videos and I do refer back from time to time on your research. it really helps out. God Bless.
The side view featuring the action of the bullet moving through the block really grabs my attention, more completely, adding another dimension to this kind of examination. Love the videos.
LOVE your channel !! in the last couple months I've picked up a Remington 870 , Taurus pt111 G2 , Glock 21 , M85 zaztava npap, M&P 15-22 AR , and a Colt LE6920 .. I've got the bug ,lol .. couple thousand rounds later I'm glued to your channel like a kid in the 80s on Saturday morning cartoons ! seeing the numbers and ballistics comparing is pure brain food for me right now ! thanks for doing what you do here !
Very interesting. The visible difference in Speer's 124+p for short barrels, compared with the standard 124+p, is a shallower hollow point cavity, ostensibly trading a little expansion for penetration at the lower short barrel velocities. My assumption was that this load was going for the same thing with its shorter serration. I guess the interesting thing is that it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. In my own (very unscientific) testing, I made the same conclusion concerning the Gold dots. Considering little or no difference in performance, and a significant price difference, I will stick with standard offerings for my short barreled carry gun.
I miss watching your videos at the frequency rate that you used to post. I can completely understand the slowdown though. I saw that you posted a new video today and was surprised by my excitement and eagerness to watch it. You are one of my favorite reviewers of.. well anything. Just wanted to say some kind words and give thanks for all your effort and hard work.
Thank you for your video. I too will stay with the Federal HST 147 147+p in most of my guns in the G19, G17 but not my Hi Power's they shines with the Speer 124g +p short barrel.
I ve only get 10k Subs on my channel and it's hard to keep up with the comments. With well over 200k Subs I don't know how you do it. Great work-glad to see your still around-even if only part time.
Just read about this ammo in the fall 2016 edition of Concealed Carry Handguns magazine. So I thought I'd look up on RUclips, your channel and viola, here it is. I want to thank you for taking time to show us a lot of the ammo options out there.
Thank you for all you have done for us. I have been with you since the beginning. I have made most of my purchases of ammunition and some fire arms based on your through and professional reviews. Thanks again. Good luck in what ever you do. God bless
I had to settle for these Federal 9mm HST Micros. I went to Gander Mountain, Fin Feather Fur, and a place called Ohio Outdoor Sports. Nobody had any HST in 9mm of any sort. I went to Wal-Mart and surprise, they are the only ones who have Federal HST in 9mm but Micros were all they had. So I had to settle for these, but judging from the video, they are pretty adequate.
Almir Alamgir Bey same. Went to academy and Walmart and all they had in 9mm was micro. Looks like everyone is buying up the 124 grain. Guess I'll just be ordering online from now on.
A little surprised by the lack of consistency but the performance still looks good. Albeit not good enough to get me to move from the 147gr + P HST. Excellent video and good to have you back, TN!
+Taji Tuck I'll take whichever one I can get in a 50 round box for a good price. all the 9mm HST's perform exceptionslly. Now the 380's, not so well. Too much expansion for the velocities. Which equates to under penetration.
I've put my HST's in ammo cans for now. They consistently expand extremely well, but I've researched a wide variety of forums and seeing penetration numbers below what I'm comfortable with. FWIW, took another look at my own tests, and ran some more off-camera. Expansion seems to be the HST's primary calling card. Going back to my original EDC load, 124 +P Gold Dot, but I'm taking a close look at the Underwood version, which clocks in a tad bit faster and more consistent than the Speer factory load. Also playing with Underwood's 147 +P XTP; I'm getting 1130 FPS on that from a Glock 19. It is also very consistent shot to shot.
+tnoutdoors9 By the way, if I sent you a 50 round box of Freedom Munitions 62gr SP would you consider a SIMS test with it? They have since I bought mine switched to a 60 gr SP but I would love to see and show that a plain 62 gr SP is a good defensive load. Your call brother.
no need to over think carry ammo. HST 124 thru 147 plus p or not and you have a winner. Good info and appreciate Mr TN taking the time to put this out there!!
tnoutdoors9, I just wanted to thank you for all your testing and time, You put out the best informational videos i have seen. I learned a lot from You. Thanks again.
TRON.... Read his in-depth reply to NRA member Roy Robles up at the top.... and you will understand why he most likely will never be back.... at least not on YT. I fully understand his situation after reading his explanation, and as much as we all miss his excellence in reviews, I would take the same position he has.
I'm certainly glad you reviewed and tested these rounds. Saw them in Wal Mart for $22.43 and bought them after watching this video in store! Thank you for all of your work in all of your videos! Cheers
Thank you so much for testing these! Very interesting results. I would have no problem paying the extra money for the 150 grain HSTs if they delivered, but it looks like the 147 grain standard pressure HST is STILL the best short-barrel 9x19mm load ever developed.
Back when this round came out, I stood in Walmart at the ammo counter watching this review while contemplating purchasing it. Decided not to because of this. Lol
Not going to say "never", but it's unlikely......time....money....time....mostly time, but I lost money doing this from 2014-2016. Would be worse these days with Adsense being down to nothing. Not interested in begging for Patreon money either. This was just a hobby that got out of control and became a fulltime job. Going to have to put the burden of ammo reviews on the manufacturers.....good luck getting detailed info from them....for whatever reason.
Thanks, but accepting Patreon creates expectations for delivering content on a regular, consistent basis.....which is a task that currently I cannot fulfill.
I know I'm extremely late to the party but I just want to say... Nobody comes even close to the depth and quality you put into your videos/ tests. Thanks for all the hard work and awesome content.
Hands down this is the BEST channel for ammo and equipment reviews. Tnoutdoors9, thanks for providing these outstanding presentations which are complete, concise, scientific, and entertaining.
I hear you. Thanks for all of the videos and great content over the years. You've introduced me to most of my favorite types of ammo. We'll be here if you ever get a little free time to make a quick blog or anything.
*Apparently he is a multimillionaire already or really bad at math. If he asked every subscriber for a dollar a month he would be paid $212,000 monthly which works out to $2,544,000 a year.*
Another fantastic, informative test, Brett Favre! I don't imagine you'll be making a EDC 2.0 video that includes these in your top 5, as your last statements in this video is all the explanation needed.
Thanks coach. I may have pulled a leg muscle on this one so I'm hitting the tub. Skipping the presser. I'm considering an overview of the past 5 1/2 years of block testing, in all the major service calibers. Nothing deep, just the basics. All of this has become redundant past the point of being boring. Established companies exploiting a niche (recoil resistant shooters) and making ammo such as this. New companies making niche products (Polycase, G2, Lehigh, etc.) that may or may not be accepted by a broad swath of those interested in self-defense. Companies using premium bullets and pushing them to crazy velocities (Underwood, etc.) But overall, nothing new that warrants using 3 vacation days to make a video and get somewhat the results we expected. So I'll use one vacation day and make a short video that regurgitates all the crap I've uncovered since 2011, LOL.
Great that you are doing these tests. I haven't viewed them for some time because I was under the impression you had stopped. I do appreciate your methodical, unbiased presentations... thank you.
50 grain solid copper liberty defense 9mm 2000+ fps, makes underwood and hst look like low grade ammo. It will go through level 2 Kevlar and stop inside the target.
No thanks, there's nothing low grade about HST. Liberty Defense claims 12 inches of penetration with that 50gr load, that's just not enough IMO. Not surprising when you're using an extremely light bullet.
Joseph Quintiliani The don't penetrate deep but the amounts of damage of the high velocity rounds is always much higher than the heavy stuff, and you only need a foot of penetration in a bear or moose any way also a 147 grain 9mm will not penetrate Kevlar, because of the unconstitutional ammo manufacturing restrictions.
I guess we're on two different wave lengths. I would never shoot a bear or a moose with a 9mm, it's not even close to suitable. As for my carry ammo, shooting through Kevlar isn't something I'm particularly concerned with. I would pick a 147gr 9mm over a 50gr 9mm every time.
Always appreciate your work and valuable information. This one's particularly timely since, as you note, a lot of us are carrying "micro pistols" -- especially in the summer heat!
martin lozano ok suhweet thank you. I had just bought these at Wal Mart and wasn't able to return them after I realized what they were for after internet research. so good to hear thanks.
Just to be clear ‘ tnoutdoors9’... the success of your videos rode on the coattails of that dynamic and gregarious personality you have, bubbling over with humor and cleverly crafted silliness. “You” were the real deal, the “Star” of the vids’...your ammo/firearms knowledge and presentations were secondary to the actual person we loved to watch. You could have chosen any subject to promote and you’d have been equally successful my friend. So it’s “You” we will miss seeing most of all. Thank You from the bottom of our 2nd amendment lovin’ hearts pal. Sincerely, Bud M.
Great review, thanks for the work that you do. Considering the price increase and similar terminal ballistics present in your testing protocol, I'll be sticking with the 147gr HST standard pressure.
I carry a full sized M&P 9, IWB with the 124 Grain Federal HST's. I am looking to get a M&P Shield for carry, do you feel the 124 Grain HST's would work fine out of such a short barrel or should I carry these 147 Grain HST's instead?
***** I know but what about pistols like the Glock 43 and M&P Shield, are the 124 Grain HST's good to go or should I go to 147 Grain HST's for better performance out of a shorter barrel?
You're doing well with either of them just see what you shoot best with. Out of shorter barrels some pple may prefer the +P loads. Watch the videos on them.
I haven't really seen anyone else on youtube do these types of tests better. I appreciate your attention to detail careful editing. Top notch work. You're my goto for ballistics tests.
Hey tn, just watched a podcast with you and John hickok from 2015, hope your doing well. I appreciate all the work you did, I've seen every video you've made. all your hard work is appriciated. hope all is well! have an awesome day!
Great video, thanks for taking the time. It just reaffirms my confidence in the 147 grain standard pressure HST, which is my EDC load. I just can't see a little less recoil and muzzle flash being worth the additional cost of the 150's.
I like the Federal line a lot, and I've invested a bit of cash to get about 200 of the 147gr. They run fine in the Glock 17 Gen 3. Thank you for doing all these tests for us. Very accurate and professional!
Just saw your update of 3-FEB I am so pleased at your anticipated return. Love your content, your no nonsense approach to scientific testing and easy demeanor. Thank you, from your average "gun guy"!
Still the best ammunition reviews on the Internet. Also seems like a lot of things these days are all about the marketing of the product when they all pretty much preformed to similar.
Still sticking with the 147, but I do like that federal is continuing to progress the technology and always trying to make a superior product, and as always thank you for your hard work and amazing videos
You really need to do the Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 124+P for comparison, it's what I've always recommended to people who ask for a recommended defensive loading for a pistol with a barrel at or under 3.5" (above that, just get the regular Gold Dots).
First of all I am so glad you are back to doing ammo reviews. I too am a user of the 147 HST and the +p 147, when you get it on line in 50 round count boxes it is about 32.00 including shipping. I am glad that Federal is paying attention to smaller self defense carry pistols and making an effort in that field. Having said that I am with you, the 147 is already a top performer and can be had for way less money.
You definitely offer the most balanced, concise reviews on the platform. I'm sorry I didn't catch on to your videos until after you quit posting them but I understand the time and expense necessary. Thanks for all you have done.
I'm glad you're testing 9mm ammo with both the 19 and the 43. Not just because I own both but for the differences between a very small carry gun and a somewhat larger gun.
Absolutely by far the most intelligent ammo guy on the tube. Ahead of his time, I have watched many many folks try to replicate this guys standard. All fall short. I’d love a comeback too

Thanks for the offer, but I'm getting a few dozen of those per month. No way I can manage that, so I politely refuse all of them.
what about a cannon with cannonball ammunition?
no need to over think carry ammo. HST 124 thru 147 plus p or not and you have a winner. Good info and appreciate Mr TN taking the time to put this out there!!
Please come back!! We miss you!!
tnoutdoors9, I just wanted to thank you for all your testing and time, You put out the best informational videos i have seen. I learned a lot from You. Thanks again.
awwwwww yea! A TNOUTDOORS9 AMMO TEST!!!!!
Miss your good work on RUclips.. lot of good info without useless BS. Really hope to see new vids again in the future. Best regards from Italy.
C'mon TN, please come back!!
Cheers
I would like to see and I'm sure many others would like to see how this 150gr. Micro works out of a Glock 19
Thank you so much for testing these! Very interesting results. I would have no problem paying the extra money for the 150 grain HSTs if they delivered, but it looks like the 147 grain standard pressure HST is STILL the best short-barrel 9x19mm load ever developed.
I think so, too.
This is a great vid. I've had great expansion (gel, jugs) in 124 standard pressure out of my MP shield so it would be hard to consider anything else
Exactly. No reason to carry anything other than the 124 standard in small 9mms like the shield or g43.
The best ammo reviews. Absolutely. Period. God speed.
I wish I had seen this review before I bought the 150gr micro
Back when this round came out, I stood in Walmart at the ammo counter watching this review while contemplating purchasing it. Decided not to because of this. Lol
Fantastic work as usual from you Sir. Thank you for your time and efforts.
I don’t know if you even still read these but if you do please consider making some more videos.
Patreon isn't begging, I would be happy to donate to your channel.
Come back to RUclips, don't throw in the towel big dawg. :(
There is a pattern. The standard pressure 147 is first in the front, middle, and rear. The 147 +p is second, and 150 is 3rd in penetration.
thanks....not worth the additional costs...Standard HST is my choice, a great design
Hands down this is the BEST channel for ammo and equipment reviews. Tnoutdoors9, thanks for providing these outstanding presentations which are complete, concise, scientific, and entertaining.
Awaiting your return! How about we get a *Patreon* style thing set up to fund the channel? EASILY doable with your amount of subs! Come back plz!
I appreciate the support, but it's not possible. There is no way I can allocate any amount of time to making videos at any pace.

Some people are afraid to take the leap to true greatness and real wealth!!
I find these flowers to be beautiful
me too! i have a bouqet of 45s!
bulletbouquets.com these guys are local here in CO.
+Landoftheignorant what a great idea!

glock doc
hah wow, would not have thought that's already something commercially available :D awesome
Hollowpoinsettia's
Always makes my day to see one of your videos. Thanks for posting!
Why has he stopped doing vids its been almost a year!
ruclips.net/user/tnoutdoors9about
Great that you are doing these tests. I haven't viewed them for some time because I was under the impression you had stopped. I do appreciate your methodical, unbiased presentations... thank you.
Think I'm gonna stick with the 147+P HST, personally. Out of a G19.
??Well if you carry a 19 this video/ammo is not for you.
This one's particularly timely since, as you note, a lot of us are carrying "micro pistols" -- especially in the summer heat!
miss u tnoutdoors9
Im really sorry to see you go. You produced some of the best videos on the net.
How do you think the rounds would perform in a 4in barrel handgun ?
martin lozano did you ever get an answer to this question? obviously not here on RUclips but maybe at your local gunshop
Well I just went out and tested it out myself. To be honest it works great !
martin lozano ok suhweet thank you. I had just bought these at Wal Mart and wasn't able to return them after I realized what they were for after internet research. so good to hear thanks.
Was the expansion wider than the 147 grain?
Kind of slow coming out of the 43 aye?
Aye.
147 grain bullet at 880 FPS? That's 380 velocity. I'll stick with my 357 Sig; 147 grain bullet at 1200 FPS.
Out of a full sized 9 it really won't matter.
MrLotus0303 So 124 or 147 Grain, doesn't matter?
it only matters if you're "Ammo Dude" :)
I haven't really seen anyone else on youtube do these types of tests better. I appreciate your attention to detail careful editing. Top notch work. You're my goto for ballistics tests.
Excellent and very thorough test!
As with many others, your efforts were greatly appreciated! Good luck!!
Still the best ammunition reviews on the Internet. Also seems like a lot of things these days are all about the marketing of the product when they all pretty much preformed to similar.
TN, you were the benchmark regarding ammo tests, thanks for all your hard work.
I still turn to your videos for ballistic comparisons on rounds. Such great content. Thank you for producing it.
I'm with you, I'll stay with the 147+P for half the price.
Lucky gunner wants $40 for 50 0f the 147 grn . ill have to shop around.
surprised by the results but great review and testing once again. glad to see you doing it again ol buddy!
You definitely offer the most balanced, concise reviews on the platform. I'm sorry I didn't catch on to your videos until after you quit posting them but I understand the time and expense necessary. Thanks for all you have done.
Thanks! New content has been posted in 2021 with more forthcoming.
One of my most favorite channels on RUclips. Sorry to see you go.
I'm glad you're testing 9mm ammo with both the 19 and the 43. Not just because I own both but for the differences between a very small carry gun and a somewhat larger gun.
I miss your videos. Very good info as usual.
You provided a HUGE service by posting these videos. Thank you so much.
