Recently Gun Sam made a video on the topic of fluted bullets. It is his belief that the flutes destabilize the bullet when it strikes tissue(or gel) and causes it to tumble/yaw. Though it would require a high-speed camera to record and play back in slow motion what exactly is occurring. If they do tumble reliably at the speeds they are moving, they should do considerable damage. The length of these bullets would be a meaningful measurement similar to obtaining the measurement of an expanded hollow point.
Only issue is is that there is high speed video, and the only time they tumble is at the end of their wound track. The flutes do leverage I think it's called the Venturi effect.
Interesting test, and the ARX seems to be the clear winner. I'd love to see a head to head test between these and Underwood's Xtreme Defenders. Could be quite interesting.
I did that previously with the 380 and that vid is posted. If I find some of the extreme defenders in 9mm next time I'm ordering ammo I'll try to get a box to test.
Fluted bullets don't have to do anything. Just come out of the barrel at speed. Hollow Points have to change shape, just right, to almost work as well.
Interesting results. I still am inclined to stay with HST. We use 124 HST standard and (+p) in all our 9mm guns in our home. 40s Gold Dot or Critical Defense (165)& 45s 230(+p) HST. Thank you.
I, too, am a Federal 124 grain (+P for me, though) HST kinda guy…100%, loaded in a Taurus G3C and my HK VP9. It’s one of those “works every time” rounds!
A smaller bullet traveling much faster than a slower heavy round is my choice a good example is comparing a 45acp 230 grain bullet going 850 - 900fps to a 357 SIG 125 grain going 1350 - 1400fps depending on barrel length l prefer the 357 SIG round and would prefer a 115 grain 357 SIG going 1450 - 1500fps over the 125 grain and these faster rounds will be more flat shooting 50 - 75 yards or further out and be more effective at longer ranges losing less energy but the 124 HST is a decent defensive round the ARX 65 grain +P is better in my opinion
I agree that speed is vital. So many HP rounds don't perform out of concealed carry length barrels but these non-expanding rounds seem to pretty well. I have the .45 rounds as well and plan to test them side by side with the HST rounds in the near future.

The ARX will feed in ANYTHING, even old military postols that will not eat hollowpoints. I have 2 Star BM's that refuae to realiably feed any hollowpoints but gobbles the ARX'S like a kid eats M&M's.
I try to test from approx the same distances just for comparable results. There may be instances where 25+ yards is appropriate for self-defense scenarios, but I believe most data shows it's generally much closer.
@@NorthwoodsTesting absolutely correct... my wonder is whether the ARX bullets' energy/speed drops off rapidly, or how far they carry that energy, being only about half the weight of a "real" bullet.
@@NorthwoodsTesting i'm not sure about that . For example the Federal HST is not an acronym for anything. That's just a three letter name they came up with. That could be the same for the ARX.
