- U.S. Ski Team racer Andrew Weibrecht, skiing in his first World Cup downhill, takes a crazy ride down the Birds of Prey Downhill in Beaver Creek to finish 10th. Weibrecht's run brought back memories of Austrian Franz Klammer's famous gold medal Olympic run in 1976. The top racers in the world were on hand for the Charles Schwab Birds of Prey Downhill, which aired on NBC Sports.
He deserves the title as the king of recoveries
Damn. Nice run. I used to race against him. It was obvious he would make it to the big time. He won this slalom race I was in at Stowe, VT by over 3 seconds.
Do you still ski?
Sparkles inside!!
One can learn to ski through watching this footage!
I skied part of this course- it's nuts. Much harder than it looks in person. Oh yeah, and they ice it down before the races. Nuts. Much respect to these guys. I ski well- but I could not hold their beer. It's not just skill either. I was an instructor. Their conditioning is intense. They condition every day. No one sees the process- just the 2:xx minutes results.
What degree edges do you use?
@@jiceBERG No idea. I am not an expert at tuning. I did it a few times, used a standard jig. When skiing, if that is what you meant, I stood on my edges like ice skates. If you don't, that hill will take you clean off and you won't slow down until you hit something. It is super steep, PURE ice and off camber, tilted to one direction. It's nuts. I went slow as possible. These guys fly down it. No matter how good you are, you are risking everything on every run. No thanks. I have more to live for. Still, I worked with some dudes who were racers- I give them much respect. They are pro's, extremely fit and fearless. Their legs looked like huge chunks of muscle. They train daily.
I can't speak for your skill but I do know from experience a lot of people do not have edge angle to properly ride and bite on ice like this. It makes a huge difference. Go get your skiis tuned this year and ask for an 87 degree edge and watch yourself fly by people like a pro. I ride an 85 degree edge but I've also been riding since I was a toddler and enjoy hard packed snow, well because it's fast as hell
@@jiceBERG Good to know. Even more important is our body mechanics and the angles we create. I'm decent- was an instructor. Hung with racers and attended a few clinics. This is all the coaches talked about- body angles. They had all kinds of diagrams to show correct form. I can get low enough to where I am dragging my hand but I am not a pro. I know my limits. Cool story- Mikaela Shiffrin was my neighbor. Never saw a more talented racer. Her family loves her a lot- they always decorated the street and her house when she won (all the time!) They are very proud of her. Sad about her Dad. They were close. I also run really tight, still boots, 120 flex. That helps. All little details add up but technique beats them all. Some of the better instructor don't even tighten their boot or bindings- that is how smooth they are (not racing- just casual skiing.) I was never that smooth.
1:33 - Meowch, that nearly hurt just by listening to that BANG from the skis hitting the snow after the landing! And the horizontal curve position from Andy is just realdiculous! :)
Even more amazing is that at 2:03 you can see Bodie Miller crack a smile
Amazing..
What wild ride!
Wow that was wild! Poor visibility and all. I’ve always admired how he could come from back of the pack and podium at times.
absolutley awesome!!!!!!!i'd say thats the definition of letting them run!
wow , wow, just WOW.
I also use the "rolling the car window closed" motor pattern that Weibrecht demonstrates at :50 when I need to stay on that outside ski for that much longer.
Thrilling.
for the first official run
WOW
keep on going that's goed
he was amazing... and I was there...
Andrew is able to give the ski free, despite some struggling he does not "break", perfect for this track. if only he had better conditions he could do it.
Edgy - daring - keep those hands in front of the face for the win, team.
That's a great run.
awesome viddy
Dude was on the limit pushing it the entire time.
love the block at 1:00, 1:37 is amazing!
I've free skiied this run and i about shit my pants
i've been saying for 3 years that he's going to kick some serious ass and he did..
i remember this, i was there, and they had 2 start from like the super g start
Michael Griffin DAMN, this comment has 8 years! Incredible (hope my english is nice because I'm from Italy)
Yes MIcheal, I thought that it was a shortened coarse due to snowfall/visibility...?
This guy is a maniac
omg he is crazy but the time that s hard work
@ironguy9922 Who is the guy patting him on the back in the starting area? Is he one of the coaches.
He's the fuckin man.
Most spectacular 1:35
Baby Huey rules -he alone is worth watching Ski races. I always hate it when the commentator is talking meanwhile he screams the runners out of the starthouse
before I watch the run I’m just thinking that all that snow, very flat light would make for a sketchy ride. Let’s see what happens.
great run. skiing by feel.
Jesus.
De Schräglog bei 0:57 ^^
My God he flies about a 100 feet off those rollers...
@TheSquarehead3000 because they dont want people doing that.
whats up with the 11 dislikes...
Crazy, reckless abandoned with a lot of luck & skill. Wow!
I swear anything that involves DH usually requires massive cajones.
Except for Lindsay Vonn. She doesn't have any. LOL
hes a friend of mine he didnt do so well at the olympics
never thought id see a spread eagle at 90mph in a downhill
*cojones
cajones is drawers
i hate how when i was there they had the whole run in moguls so you couldn't ski it :(((((( unfair!!!!!!!!!!!!!
