As a kid I always remember 4 players ( Van Basten, Gullit, Rijkaard and Koeman)on this Dutch team being consistently considered among the best in their position. They were the reigining Euro champions and a lot was expected of them at the start of this cup. They wound up grossly underachieving by barely making it out of the group stage and losing in the round of 16. Shows that in soccer to win tournaments you need more than individual talents. You need balance in every position, good coaching and overall strategy. All world cup winning coaches had to have been at least above average with some of them being brilliant. Shout out to Zagalo's coaching in Brazil's '70 Bearzot's '82 coaching of Italy and Carlos Bilardo, who I think is one of the alltime great soccer coaches, in Argentina's '86 and '90 campaigns.
Beckenbauer said that if the World Cup was held in 1988, the Netherlands would be the champion.
What I remember about this game was Lineker constantly not being on the end of anything.
One of the best 0-0’s I’ve seen. And we were robbed. Pearce’s indirect free kick just brushed the top of Steve Bull’s huge bouffant of hair. VAR would pick that up now 😉.
Seriously- this is the match we debuted the sweeper formation and launched our epic World Cup journey against one of the favourites

@@jordyf3360 one of my favourites. England never used to get awarded penalties. 2-1 down with 8 mins left, and the ref points to the spot. And then he only does it again 20 mins later!

Yes, I remember the launching of the sweeper system! We were shite in the competition up until this game & I recall how it worried me & my mates us suddenly deploying a more continental sweeper system approach! But it seemed to work.
Don't remember Lineker missing all those chances though. We were a bit over reliant on him some times.

That was a very tight group. If Egypt had managed to equalise against England in the next game it would have meant that all 4 teams had identical records and all 4 would have had to be pulled out of a pot to decide their placing in the group.

Pretty terrible finishing on both sides. Lineker seemed about a yard short of crosses that he usually would have gotten to, and that left-footer was a horror show.

Stadiums like this with the fans a mile from the pitch because of a running track should never be allowed to host tournament games or any major finals etc

This was the first WC that really introduced the shot well over the bar. It happened all tournament. I think they made the ball lighter.
Why was Stuart Pearce freekick goal disallowed?
The ref had his hand up, indicating it was an indirect freekick. If it had had a touch of anyone, including the keeper, it would have been a goal. But since it went directly into the net, it was disallowed.

Lineker really was a bit shit. A couple of clear-cut chances that didn't even get on target. No left foot, etc,. Couldn't read the game, etc,. Wouldn't get near the squad these days. Gazza was world class though.
Are you crazy? He was top scorer in the 1986 World Cup with 6 and scored 4 in 1990. 10 goals in 12 matches. He did better for England than Shearer and Owen ever did.

@@CharlieVane21 still better than World Cup flops Shearer and Owen who never scored more than 3 goals in a World Cup. Shearer couldn't even help England qualify in 1994 and all Owen did in 2002 was dive against Argentina and score a simple goal against Brazil due to a defensive error.

In 1990, England, Germany, Italy and Brasil were level. Then the Netherlands, Yugoslavia, Argentina and Spain.
I wouldn’t put Argentina below the 4 you mentioned, especially not below Brazil. Maradona wasn’t quite the same as in ‘86 but he was still scary.
I think Czechoslovakia, Belgium Cameroon and Colombia was better than Spain
England was robbed in this game.
Two goals were not offsides.
I don't know why those goals didn't stand. Both goals seemed good.
Well,it had nothing to do with being offside or not.In the first case there is (perhaps accidental) handball by Lineker during the "rebound".The second goal was disqualified because it had been an indirect free-kick but the ball went straight in the net with noone else having touched it as it should have been for the goal to be legal.
@@aekangelo I figured the same thing for the first goal. Obviously it should have stood since the handball was accidental. It makes sense for the second goal in that case not to have stood.

@@aekangelo I liked the way handball rules were before. But many newcomers apparently didn't understand them and it became a big deal, so they had the rules changed to suit them. It's ridiculous that nowadays you get called for handballs if you can't do anything about it.

The worst world cup I've ever seen. Compare to the peak era of football from 2000 to 2014, the quality was terrible back then. 1997 was the beginning of football transformation to the next level. Unfortunately, since 2018 world cup is the beginning of football decline. Messi-Cristiano rivalry is the peak moment of football history.
That's your age talking..... check out 1970 in Mexico, 1978 in Argentina, 1982 in Spain and 1986, again in Mexico. All great world cups. Leaving out 1974 at that was pretty awful.
@@jasonarcher5909 you're right about age. However, 70 and 86 world cup are much more about the dominant Brazil team and Maradona's legendary performances. Brazil can did that because the gap between them and the other teams was massive. 86, wow, it was something else. But it's because of Maradona. It's interesting that 74 wasn't that bad for me. Not great, but still better than 78 for me.
But, if we talk about the quality of football system, skills, techniques, 2000-2014 is the peak of football. Marco van Basten was my childhood hero. I love Capello's Milan, Cruyff's Barcelona, and the treble winner Man United. Yet, we've seen the best of football in 2000-2014. Even today in 2022, I think football is already declining with no more superstar artists likes Zidane, Rui Costa, Del Piero, Totti, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Xavi, Iniesta, Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney, Henry, Ribery, Robben, Sneijder, and surely the end of Zlatan, Messi, and Cristiano.
